Unfortunately, I have experienced many California hospitals over the past five years with various family members -- a couple have well known national reputations. This week my 80-year old father had total knee replacement by Dr. Knutson who deserves his excellent reputation. Hands down, Palomar Pomerado Hospital, its physicians, nurses, PT staff, volunteers and admin staff are the best I have experienced. I rarely am impressed enough to take the time to write some kind of review but they merit comment. I hope that this hospital team keeps up the patient/customer driven programs that are obvious through their hospital experience. Good job and thank you.

Palomar Hospital is AWFUL!!!!! Do not go there. They are only interested in your insurance provider, not caring for you. Brought in to trauma unit after a cycling accident via ambulance. Orthopedic Doctor was extremely rude. Broken ribs, punctured and collapsed lung, broken clavicle, refused surgery. Asked if I had sick leave from work? (what was that question???), did not appear to have viewed x-rays. All in all, unprofessional and very scary. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

the staff has been amazing. Proactive, caring and light hearts. Best customer service of most hospitals I have been too. The on call evening doctor didn't listen as well, but the day staff especially nursing staff were top notch!

7 hr wait, ask how much longer told I am the next one. 7 names later my name is called had to get up from wheel chair no room no help walked over to be told to sit back down I beat up drunk has priory. Left after 7 hours with out seeing a doctor.
Sadly I had the opportunity to observe the ER for 7 hours last night, and I was amazed how prepared people came to the ER especially for an Emergency setting.

First of all DUI's are priority period, Drunks who come in after a fight too.
Woman tell loud and clear that she just got out of prison and now she is here, she acted like she run that ER
Saw allot of minor flu/cold cases, no reason to be in a ER
Volunteers baby-sit
Families have enough time to pack up and load 8 people
Non-insured people where priority over insured ones.
Restrooms where disgusting, Porta Potties are cleaner as these Restrooms

Amazement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People had time in the case of an Emergency to pack

goodie bag, pillows, blankets
Some stopped at Jack in the box first,
some brought cake,
some had salad,
lots of them had time to back cell phone chargers, and recharged at ER,
chargers for ipods.

WOW

What did I do wrong I didn't had nothing, my dogs where at home without food, my Jacuzzi was running, windows wide open, I was hungry and cold etc.
Our Emergency gave me just enough time to take my purse and car keys.
What??s wrong with these people?

I guess next time I throw the BBQ in the back so I can grill for 7 hr. NEVER EVER AGAIN, and we never ever will vote for anything regarding PALOMAR.

I have to agree with everyone that the hospital is FILTHY. Some doctors, nurses and staffs are caring, DIRTINESS is the number one reason that i stay away from this hospital.

this place is a joke that should be shut down! Filthy, fraudulent billing, over pricing, poor response time, rude staff! Watch the ER on any given day. See for yourself. Check the bathrooms and seating. Gross place, and unethical!

A month ago i toked my husband to ER due to his chronic cluster headache. I was at work at that time. it was about 3.30 am and i don't have anybody to rely on at that moment. the service was great!! they help us right away.
After few minutes they toked him inside the room. ,To me the room was clean enough . after 30 minutes i asked the staff if i can leave and comeback after 2 hours after i get off from work to pick up my husband . they really take good care of my husband..the bill of course was huge $2,065 all together but its all worthed..our insurance paid most it. we only get billed 30.00 dollars for co fee..

On 7-31-07, my 8 year old son, was pronounced dead at about 5:46am at Palomar Hospital after a severe and sudden Asthma attack. He had been there in May of 07 for the same thing and so many of the Nurses knew us. I was AMAZED at the Compassion and Concern that we were shown. The Nurses and Social Worker who walked along side me as I was going to see him for the last time. They gave us all the time we needed to hold his hands and cry and attempt to say Goodbye.

I truly understand that sometimes Palomar Hospital is so very busy and packed. It's difficult to get a room and the Doctor is carrying a load of their own with so many Patients. But in the times when we were there not just with our son, but also my Husband who has health issues, we have received the BEST CARE FROM ANYWHERE.I can only speak about my own personal experiences there, but I can say with all honesty that even with the Memories of seeing my Child for the last time there, I would never go anywhere else.

the worst in the world. third world countries have a staff more willing, and able to help. they would rather help drug addicts get their next fix for free rather than help a hard working white natural born citizen of this once great country. i have to give them one star because the scale doesnt go any lower, and its required for this review. i hope they fire every last employee and tear the building down and put a landfill there as it would serve a better purpose.

My daughter was having trouble breathing at my doctor's office across the street from the hospital and began throwing up because she was coughing profusely. My doctor recommended we go to the ER immediately since it was close by. When we got there, my daughter was gasping and throwing up. It took 30 minutes to even get triaged. When we did, they have her a pill to stop the throwing up and a rag to catch the throwup. We were sent back out into the waiting room where she continued to throw up for another hour until she fell asleep from exhaustion. 2 hours later, they escorted us back to the rooms. Well, our room was a chair in a corridor where we were seen in a hallway. There was a crazy woman with blood all over her wandering the hallways and she kept coming over to us and going into other people's rooms. This place is a joke. By the way - the one pill was $195 on the insurance bill I got, and the hallway room was about $1000...that's what they billed the insurance.

the nurses were laughing and obnoxious in the hallway, the room we had was disgusting and dirty, the ER doctor prescribed our infant daughter the wrong dosage, we ended up having to go to a different ER within 24 hours in san diego and the pediatric ER doc caught this mistake, her original dosage was that of a toddler! i was livid!

When my youngest son was 2 years old, I took him to the ER for possible poisoning. He had vomitting after he got a hold of my cleaner. It took them 4 hours to even triage my son. That to me is too long to see a patient who has potentially been poisoned.

I had two major surgeries done at the same time at Palomar a few moths ago. Both doctors were wonderful, each explained their part in the surgery they were going to do (in plain English; to where a person could understand). The nursing staff were great too, even though they work 12 hour shifts! House keeping on the other hand, they were awful. By the second day I was there, I told them there were still garbage on the floor and counters needed to be wiped down, shouldn't be up to the patient how to tell them how to do their jobs.

I went to the emergency room for my 5Th digit, they had a medical tech that is putting the splint backwards. They never put me in a room, only a nurse and a medical tech see me.I paid cash $531 and I was under the impresion I paid the bill in full, they never gave a detail stament for services provided and after a month. I get multiple extra bills from diferent departments for a room I never steped into and extra bill for $281 for an incompetent med tech, I called every single one to complained and the Palomar Hospital toll me to put it in writting, but they do not care.Seems they have a license to overcharge for services not render and ignore your complaints

My kid kike just got back from surgery he almost died by losing alot of blood. He fell down a tree trying to get a fruit and opened up the front part of his leg. Well his little brother came running fast. He was screaming because he was scared, too. After we got to the hospital's parking lot a man in an emergency cart said ''do you guys need a ride'' and of course we said yes because it was far for my son to get up there. That time we got lucky! Well we got there the doctors attended him quickly. They tried their best to keep him calm and they did and I think they do the bestest job!!!!! :)!

I recently had my first experience at Palomar hospital for a hysterectomy. I enjoyed a private room, friendly and helpful medical staff, and even a good turkey dinner.
I find it remarkable that the hospital appeared to be well staffed with quality clinicians in spite of the daily pressures and scrutiny from our greedy health care corporations. Thanks Palomar hospital.

My daughter was admitted a few days ago from the ER to the med surg unit. I was very impressed with the efficiency of the ER. Everyone was very professional and knowledgeable. I am a nurse elsewhere and I was very happy with the treatment my daughter received from them. She had four drs. treating her within the first hour of her being there. That was the first time being at that hospital and I will for sure go back again.

On 08-13-09 I went to the emergency room there and showed them my wrist as it was swollen. They took X-rays and then I was seen by a physician's assistant. She told me "ah... I can tell you have a Cyst just by looking at it. I asked her if she saw the x-rays and she said. "oh you had x-rays?" I said yes and she said wait a sec. Went to see the x-rays, came right back and said. "I was right. No broken bone here just a Cyst" I wasn't liking it right about then. When I went to discharge and they billed me 980.00 something dollars! Almost a grand for an X-ray that I didn't need?? Outrageous! I am fighting this with billing. This is what is wrong with our health system. We need price control and better care. I didn't need an x-ray if the Doc could see that it was a cyst. To top it all off... they never gave me an official bill, never let me see x-rays (did they really have them?) They did give me a discount if I paid them then and there. I am NO Sucker but I feel like I have been suckered! Something has to be done about them!

I just spoke with billing. They did give me a 40% deduction but I believe it is still too much money. 582.00 for an x-ray I didnt need. There has to be price regulation from the Government. Basically right now they have a legal license to steel.

I had a major heart attack at home Thanksgiving night at 8:45pm 11-23-06. I live in a rural area of San Diego county and did not arrive at Palomar Hospital ER until approx 10:50pm by ambulance. I was immediately met by the ER Dr London and Cardiologist Dr John Detwiler. Protocol Myocardial Infarction treatment was started immediately. Within 10 minutes I was rolled into the Cardiac Catherization Lab and 30-40 minutes later Dr. John Detwiler had completed the opening of a 100% blockage of my Left Anterior Descending Artery by Angioplasty, Implanted a stent, and checked all the other Coronary Arteries for blockages. Off to I.C.U. for about 12 hours, followed by a trip up to the 6th floor and the Critical Care Unit Room 615, where I stayed until my release on Nov27 1000 hours. Can't say enough about the very high quality care provided to me by Doctors, Nurses, Techs. All showed high degrees of professionalism and all were very kind and caring. This rates 5***** treatment in my book. Well come to think of it, I may have to lower that rating to 4.99*****, as I did have to have the Low Sodium Diet. : )Joey R

I have used Palomar a few times in my life, but recently had to use it for a true critical emergency. I was severely injured in a car crash and was transported there with head trauma. Worse, my daughter was life flighted to Children's Hospital. The care I received initially was excellent, and my follow up care has been exemplary. Throughout the ordeal, I was consistently impressed with how they communicated their concern for me and kept me informed about my daughter.

One critical area for improvement is their control of their web pages and their phone system. This can be slipshod and maddening

Start to finish my whole accident experience could hardly have been better. Escondido fire and police came very quickly and were highly professional. Sure, I had to wait a while in ER, but it was very busy. I needed surgery and the results of it are excellent.

I took my mother to have a blood draw at the hospital's Laboratory. What a filthy place that is! Not only did the floors look like they hadn't been washed for a week or two, but the seats were so disgusting I could not bring myself to sit on them. They looked like they were stained with body fluids and were gross! When we went inside to have the blood drawn I saw a blood draw kit--a portable one the phlebotomist uses-- sitting on top of a garbage can. When I questioned the employee regarding its placement she said it was OK because they did not ever put them on the patients tray!!! The supervisor of the department walked right by it so I guess it's their standard proceedure!!!! God help the people of Escondido AB

Recently in December '08 while vacationing nearby, I experienced a bad fall that rendered me unconscious & eventually led me to the Palomar ER.

At first glance, I was not sure what to make of my surroundings as they were very middle of the road. However, I was admitted fairly quickly by a very capable nurse and was soon seen by an equally capable doctor that answered all my questions (real funny, too)...can't remember his name. I subsequently had a CT scan, was debriefed on the results and released a short time later.

For a guy who is used to Cedars Sinai quality physicians, I can tell you that both the support staff and doctor rivaled that type of care. I would have no issue being admitted to this hospital again for similar care.

My 16 year old daughter was brought in with severe head trauma. Being the protective parent I am, I stayed with her through the entire ER process and into the CCU ward. She has been at Palomar Hospital now for 16 days.

During her stay, we have seen many doctors, many nurses and many support staff. I have to say that this experience has been wonderful. What I found through this process has been a consistent pattern of care for the patient, and compassion for the family. I asked for restricted access, and the CCU staff put in place a process to minimize the casual well wisher (allowing the patient to get the rest needed). Each nurse introduced herself and was responsive to both the patients need and my need to understand what was happening. The doctors kept me informed and provided options to their recommendations.

I would expect there to be a couple of employees that go out of their way to ensure a patients comfort, but because of the overwhelming consistency of care, I believe there to be a hospital driven passion for the care provided to my daughter.

I cannot say enough good about the experience received here. My daughter is now in Acute Rehab ward and receiving the same passion in care as she has received during this entire process. There are always improvements to be made, I just cannot find any.

Good Job Everyone, Thank you for being there.

I can't believe this. I have to "join" before I can leave a comment! I would have thought when calling a HOSPITAL, you could talk to a real person! But, noooooo. I got an automated answering service. What is up with these companies? I tried to leave a message before and one of the comments back to me was...
"Your review contains too much nonsense!"
NOW THAT REALLY TAKES THE CAKE!!!! That want you to comment, but they they criticize your comments!!! WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO????

2/07 I had broken my right leg in an off road collision and lost more then 1/2 my blood volume, heart rate would jump to 160 just standing up. Had to have a rod through my femur and plate in my tibia. They did not x-ray my tibia only my femur and were going to put me through surgery. My fiancee had to yell at them to x-ray my tibia where there was an impact mark, they told me there was one frature come to find it was shattered. They did everything to the minimum. Nurses forgot to give me my 2nd blood transfusion, even though it was ordered. Had two Doctors one was excellent while the other was (terrible --->). On call Orthopedic surgeon put the rod in wrong which left my right leg turned in 30 degrees (and laughed about it) as well as mistakingly chipped off a piece of my hip bone that I had to go through another surgery for. Dr. was extremely vague, cold, and cruel (treated me like a piece of meat). Although, nurse staff was nice to me. They released me too soon from the hospital w/ only Vicodin (was on vicodin, oxycontin, morphine, anti-inflammitory, anti-nausea, etc.) you can only imagine what kind of severe pain I was in. Immediately switched Doctor's. (pending lawsuit) Would never go back to this place again!

I GAVE BIRTH, C-SECTION, IN 2001. NURSES WERE AWFUL. 2 CODE BLUES. I LEFT APPROX 36 HRS LATER. TWO YRS LATER, FATHER-IN-LAW CAME IN FOR HEART DYE TEST WITH SUPPOSE IT STAND BY SURGEON, SURGEON NOT THERE, AND WE WATCHED HIM DIE. WOULD RATHER DIE ON THE WAY TO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I have given birth twice at this hospital, as well as been in for various emergencies for myself as well as family. Service in the ER is very slow! They are always jam packed and have a long wait.

The maternity rooms are nice, but I got stuck with some mean nurses with my first son. I guess everyone has a bad day!

My father has cancer, nothing can be done for it. He has waited in the ER all night at other Hospitals. They admit him quickly. They will only release when they are stable. They are very kind, and truthful about conditions.
They truly only give the best of care.

PROS: They release only when stable, and admit quickly
CONS: none

I recently had an outpatient surgery done at Palomar, and it was a good experience. The nurses were really nice, friendly and competent people. It was sort of a sad surgery (miscarriage) and they were very caring and made me feel comfortable.

I guess you don't have much of a choice where you go in an emergency. But you can rest assured, Esco, Palomar is not a bad place. It wasn't exactly luxurious, but it could've been way worse!

This is the one hospital in Escondido, and perhaps San Marcos/RB area. It is certainly nothing to write home about, but its decent and there is an ER in case you cut your finger off or poke your eye out. I know a few ICU nurses and they are great, so ifthey are representation of the other nursing staff?s you?ll be just fine.
