The greeting from Gary and Mr. Ward has been friendly. I appreciate Mr. Ward's more precise language and less condescension than Gary. The office lady I interacted with seemed ambivalent to my satisfaction and had short curt responses, but I did not interact with her much at all.

The long and short of it is, besides the kind treatment, they just consistently charge too much on labor.

My vehicle required a thorough tune up, they were clear on the items included: spark plugs, new ignition wires, PVC valve, fuel filter, distributer cap and rotor. They estimated the cost of labor alone at $625 NO PARTS INCLUDED! 3.75 hours . That means that they are charging over $166/ per hour, this is on top of a $500+ diagnostic, and WITHOUT THE PARTS!
Another half hour job was $80 without the parts.
I priced the total for all the parts myself. Buying form Kragen or other similar retail auto parts suppliers, My parts cost under $500. Wards was going to charge me $1200. I would think He could save some money over my top dollar retail prices - for top quality parts, still they over doubled the cost!

I called around and every other garage would charge me 300 or more dollars less FOR THE SAME JOB (same vehicle same condition etc. . .) with top quality PARTS INCLUDED!

Ward's moderator, I hope you will explain this to me.
I wonder how much of that $166+ dollars an hour is really going to the mechanic that is doing the work?
Based on the friendly service by Mr. Ward, I might have been a long time customer and was ready to become one, but when I saw the consistent overcharging on the work I will finish my job there, cut my losses, and not return.

Like another reviewer said-- I feel raked over the coals-- but at least they are friendly while they charge me $166/ hour : )

I do not expect I will return.

I would definitely take my car here. They are honest and will tell you the truth. They do not want to do work to your car if it isn't necessary or if will cost too much compared to the car's age and value. They will explain everything. Great place. And this come from someone who has several mechanics in the family.

We have been taking our cars to Ward??s Service with absolute confidence for about 8 years. They have helped us with our regular service needs, and also with a variety of repairs. Wards is always professional and friendly. They have competently diagnosed and repaired our vehicles each time we have brought them in. Wards Service has also tested cars to help our children make decisions when purchasing used vehicles. We completely trust them for their valued opinion and mechanical expertise. It is always a pleasure to do business with Wards. We are happy customers.

The wife's Toyota Sequoia had a dead battery in front of our house recently. Ward Service came out to our house in Monrovia, jumped the car to take to their shop, and gave my wife a ride to work. Super service. Thanks Jim !

Even though Monrovia is not the most convenient for me when I need to service my cars, I do not mind traveling to Wards -- EVER.

I know when I take my car in, I am not going to be ripped off, I am not going to be told I need work that I do not need, and I know the work they do will be top notch.

I once took my son's Dodge to a dealer for recall work and they told me I also needed brakes on all four wheels. Not only did Wards do the work for half the cost the dealer qouted me, but they told me the front brakes did NOT need to be replaced. Many other repair places would have simply replaced both sets (since that is what I came in to do.) THAT is integrity.

I highly recommend Ward's Service. Even if you are not in the immediate area.

Absolutely the only place I would tell anyone to take their cars. Super honest people and VERY good at what they do. They have been in business for decades and have a tremendous reputation in the community. I have learned to only do business with the best and I take my cars to Wards Automotive Service. They literaly put their name on their work. Nicest feeling when you finaly have a place that you trust and charges a fair price for good work.

A simple diagnostic request to find misfire culprit. Three hours of labor at 96/hr later and they are still confused. No test plan, no methodology and no regard for customer's pocketbook. Their offer to replace parts blindly along the way was the thing I was looking to avoid by bringing in for "professional" diagnostic. Not only did they not follow a diagnosis through from a to b (jumped from spark plug wires to fuel filter back to ignition coil) but then when they found something that needed replacement (they claim) they wanted $400 for a $100 part and 1/2 hours labor.

Gary is willing and able to b.s. you if you don't know slightly more than him about cars. He also struggles with basic physics. When I first brought my car in he struggled with a concept that even made Jim (shop's namesake) wince in embarrassment.

I wince to think of how far over the coils my neighbor, who offered his friendly recommendation for Ward's, is getting raked over the coils with his german sports car. I pity the guy for buying into the "Grin at you while we clumsily stumble about your car at $100/hr" philosophy that is king at Ward's. No wonder every other customer there that I saw was an old man lost in the 50's when customer service and honesty meant something -- an illusion they clearly buy into at Ward's service.

If you value your hard earned money, and don't want to be bull-sh***ed while you're at it -- AVOID WARDS.

edit: I forgot to mention that when I went to pick up my car the woman who took my money had so much personality it stung. If I recall correctly it was "Here's your keys, your car is out back you can go get it."
