Square One Books

Square One Books is an average bookstore that carries new books. Nothing about it made me think that it had any advantage over the other places I buy books (used bookstores, online sellers like Amazon for new books, etc), so I haven't been back. Square One just doesn't carry a wide enough variety of titles to find anything obscure, plus there didn't seem to be much of a price advantage. Nothing really wrong with it if you're just looking for a common title that you can pick up in the plaza by the Safeway, though.

A well-stocked, pleasant, if somewhat blah independent bookstore. It seems to be holding its own against the ever popular B&N just across they way . They have a great fiction section, and a very well stocked local section, especially focussing on local sites. The help are very friendly and knowledgeable. They'll special order anything you can't find in the store. There are also frequent author readings and events in the store.

A small store that has a good selection. Located in Jefferson square, it is really about the only independent new book retailer in West Seattle. They also have a decent children's selection. That being said, I have gone in with my unsually well-behaved toddler and been poorly received by the staff. I've gone a couple more times with her to make sure it wasn't just a bad day - unfortunately it was consistant. We won't be going back. Which is sad as I like to support the independents and there aren't many left. I gave 3 stars as I'm sure it is a fine place for folks without children.

Square One is a rare find today when most bookstores are mega stores. It may be small in size but they are able to order anything you want along with personal service and a smile. I also like the fact that they have a few small gifts that are so handy for that last minute extra to accompany the gift of a book.
