I didn't have a doctor or insurance at the time but was having rib pain so was recommended by a family member to see one of their doctors... when I called, I got an appt with one of the orthopedic physician assistants a few days after calling, his name is Karim Wahib. This guy was one of the most rude, sarcastic, rushed with an overall dismissive attitude from a doctor I've ever seen! He acted bored and conceited, like my problem was trivial to him and any question I asked (all legitimate questions) he gave me a sarcastic answer. I became very uncomfortable and didn't want to ask much more, just wanted to be on my way. After quickly assessing my needs, he said another doctor would come in and talk to me. After about a 20 minute wait, a very nice woman ortho doctor (not a PA) came in--Dr. Barot (I learned later from looking at their website) who was easier to deal with and had much better "bedside manners". She explained what she thinks I have and the treatment for it. Wahib either realized that he was rubbing me the wrong way or this is their usual procedure, I don't know. Then I was done so paid the bill by credit card (no, it wasn't a reasonable cost either) and the billing person wouldn't even give me a bill in writing, explaining that I was treated there and what my diagnosis was! I wanted something in writing, (other than a credit card receipt) but they said I'd have to wait and it would be mailed to me in about a week. Well it wasn't and I had to call to get a bill in writing. When it finally came, there was no diagnosis nor did it say which doctor I saw, just that I paid and had a "0" balance. I find that kind of odd as well. In summary, I would not want to go back there, was not happy with the way I was treated. I find the place to be a very impersonal office with too many doctors and not enough personal attention. Dr. Wahib left me a voicemail (with my x-ray results, how kind of him to leave me a vm about test results) and he talked so fast, I could barely understand him! He said that everything looked fine and he's leaving for the day and I can call Dr. Barot that day (though she wasn't there when I called that day either after getting his vm). The office environment had a pretentious air to it as well. Yes,I read... Dr. Ruden's been on TV, so what? There's no way I would get to see one of the head doctors, I'm sure you have to know someone to have one of them treat you and the wait is probably ridiculous too. I found the place to be more like a 3-ring circus!

This a first rate practice in every respect I have experienced. I have had none of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. My PCP is Ron Ruden. I have been a patient there since 1997, before the office on E. 65th Street was opened. I see Dr. Ruden, or an associate, or a PA as I consider necessary as appropriate as required for my medical issue at the time. I appreciate this flexible approach. I have seldom, if ever, waited more than 10 minutes for any appointment, even when my issue was urgent, the day was already late, and I needed to see someone that day, as when I had an inexplicable swelling of my tongue when I was on my way home from work. Everyone I have seen has been professional, courteous and knowledgeable, and has taken their time with me. Referrals have been judiciously recommended, and well-selected. During a period when I was unemployed and uninsured, they worked with me to keep me healthy within the parameters of what I could afford. If you consider yourself to be the executive manager of your own health care, this is an exceptional practice to work with.

I have had mixed experiences. Some visits are very personal and detailed, especially with Dr. Braunstein. Other times I would wait for an extended period of time to only been seen by an assistant for 30 seconds before leaving. I will continue to visit this office unless things deteriorate more.

I've been a patient for years and this practice has become laughable -- just gigantic and impersonal. Good luck seeing a doctor (let alone yours). I routinely get shuttled to physician's assistants who appear to enjoy their jobs as much as DMV workers enjoy theirs. This used to be a good practice. Now seeing Dr Yaffe is like being granted an audience with the Dalai lama. And when one is granted, he spends it talking on the phone, typing, or being asked a questions by someone who walks in to the room while you're in your boxers. Don't worry, though, you'll be out the door in about three minutes.

I really like this place. You have the choice to see a Doctor or PA, the PA is usually a short wait. For instance, if you have a UTI and you must go the same day, a PA will see you right away. They will do the blood work and write prescriptions if necessary or if you have something serious they will make you see a Doctor. I like that because it saves time for everybody. When you need an annual physical only a Doctor will do it and he will take all the personal time you need without interruptions.

Also you can get the flu shot and have blood work done without an appt.

Dr Yaffee used to be a great doctor when his office was on the upper east side. He even gave patients his home #!
Now you are fortunate if he has the time to see you--usually you are placed with a physician's assistant and then asked if you want to see the dr....
When he decided to expand his practice--the quality of care suffered greatly. He invested heavily and expected patients to share in the financial burden and the personal attention and care have suffered.
In my case he told me it was safe for my wife, an MS patient, to receive a flu shot. NO! too late but anyone with an autoimuune disease should not just get a flu shot. Now she has suffered and needs to walk with a cane! Thanks doctor Yaffee.
One of his assistants chose to diagnose me as depressed and formally placed that factoid in my permanent record including misinformation that I was potentially suicidal.
When I went to apply for long term medical care I was denied as Dr Y was kind enough to send my permanent records to the insurance company.
Have you ever tried speaking on the phone to Dr Yaffee...all the extensions are secret...but while hes examing you he will always pick up a call and discuss another patients' case while you wait.
I'm sure Dr Y is a good doctor but he so distracted that he seems to be more of a businessman than a caring man of medicine. Not the guy that was profiled on page 1 on the NY Times!

Interesting. I also had a strange experience at Yaffe, Ruden. While there for a regular check up, after a very general insight into my current health report, all the doctor wanted to talk about was an endocrine problem I had in my teens that had long been addressed and resolved years ago. Made me do a series of tests and repeat visits that confirmed what I said in the beginning. That that had been resolved years ago. Nothing in my routine check up indicated there was a problem to begin with.

Their office is the best in NY. No finer drs or more caring practioners exist. You might wait, but they make it comfortable for you. I've been with them for 20 years, and no matter how busy they are, I know they truly care about my well being.

Office is usually as busy as Bloomingdale's on Saturday afternoon, but the quality of care, the human concern, and the problem solving efficiency and sense of urgency and follow-up are second to none. Dr Yaffe's talents in his profession are world class, as is his network of specialists to solve specific issues. In my opinion, Yaffe/Ruden is one of, if not the best practices in the city of New York...and that's quite an accomplishment.

Twenty Years and still caring?? - carynbresnick?? - May 23, 2008

My physical was scheduled for 1 pm. I had to be back in my office by 2:30 and didn't want to cancel. I checked the website, they were running on time. I arrived at 1:05, Dr. Yaffe was waiting for me! I had a thorough physical exam, we caught up on the kids and how time has flown by, we discussed some new cutting edge medicine, storing your own stem cells, and even had time for a politcial discussion. I was on my way downtown at 2:00 on time for my meeting. Great medical care with a personal touch. Who could ask for more.!

The glitz of their showy website should be the first warning that they are more interested in self-promotion than actual medical care.
I ended up going here because my regular doctor was out and I was in excruciating pain. Someone suggested them as they are so large and would see me that day. What a waste of time and money.
The PA I saw listened to my symptoms and before I even finished decided what she thought was wrong with me. Then she asked if she should examine me. What kind of question was that? I showed her where the pain was and the mass I felt and she was like, oh, that's nothing, you just need some cream and you'll be fine. I will see if I can get the dr in here but she's v. busy. Bad service and no bedside manner either. She was v. young and v. clueless.
She must have told the dr her theory because the dr walked in and just started spewing her ideas of what I should do because she assumed the PA was correct. I kept telling her, as I had the PA, that it was NOT what they were thinking, this was something I never experienced before, there WAS a mass under my skin and it needed to be examined. The dr herself asked if she wanted me to examine her. I've never been to a dr's office where this wasn't something a dr didn't do normally. She finally did examine me and said that there seemed to be "some inflammation" but that was all. She kept to her PA's theory and all I needed was some cream. Well, I was in more agony that night, and by the next day I could barely move. I ended up in the ER and to make a long story short I had to have surgery to remove a nice size abscess. Every dr that looked at me in the ER felt it straight away and they put me on morphine the moment after they examined me because of the pain. They asked why I hadn't got to the dr sooner, and I said I did, yesterday, when the pain started and they told me nothing was there. They were in shock as you couldn't miss it.
So, stay away from this place if you want to avoid pain and suffering. If I had been diagnosed on Friday, I would have been in the hospital directly, had the surgery and avoided extra days of pain and misery.

I have been a patient here since 1995. The doctors and staff here are helpful, efficient and polite.

I have always been able to get a same day appointment when I was not feeling well (which is VERY important to me). I never have had to wait longer than 20 minutes to be seen.

My only complaint is that they ask the pharmacy to call there for refills (as opposed to them calling them in).

When I first visited the Yaffe Ruden website, I was impressed that they had an "on time" section, which relayed information for which MD's were running late so that you can check to see what time you need to come for your appointment. However, this "on time" section is more of a theory than a report of the office's timely status. My first two appointments, supposed to be "on time" according to the website, were an hour late. Not horrible, but that is an hour more that I take off from my work and my clients. I was also not impressed by the physician himself. He did not address the main problem I was having that brought me in, giving little advice, and instead focused on a heart murmur that I have had since birth which I have already had an echocardiogram for. In a word, he was useless. But the final straw was when I returned to have my TB test read (which takes about 10 seconds, 1 minute to write on my chart). I waited two hours, and was never seen. I finally left because it was 1/2 hour before their close, everyone was leaving, and I had no chance of being seen. I took my chart and will never go back.

I was a former patient at Dr. Yaffe's office. The doctor's office is too big for my taste. The waiting area is nice, with a computer to check the web and plenty of magazines to help pass the waiting time. It was not that easy to get appointments, especially for the first physical check-up. They have a cool website. Even though Dr. Yaffe was my PCP, I rarely saw him personally. I was usually seen by the younger doctors on staff.

PROS: nice waiting area
CONS: impersonal, incontinuity of service with many doctors on staff

Yaffe, ruden & Associates are a spectacular group of caring doctors who are very knowledgable and up-to-date! The waiting area is very bright and airy and is such a nice touch when you're feeling miserable. They have a MAC computer set up for your surfing enjoyment while you wait and it passes the time very quickly! They always require that you have your insurance card available, but don't take it personal, it's for your benefit! Located on the NE side of 65th street in the middle of the block with a black gate, lobby is down stairs

PROS: will see you the same day
CONS: can be hard to find the first visit
