childhood days

by Eazy D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,209

These is one of the stores I used to hang out in my childhood days. This comic book store has everything a comic book collector could want. Not only do they sell comic books, they sell sports cards, figurines, recreational and fantasy stuff. It has been crowded here ever since. Their prices are average for comic book stuff and a little more for the others. It is a great place to kill some time in between places. This reminds me of being a kid again.

Like a kid in a candy store

by Mihir J. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,789

One of my favourite stores in the city, also a place where my wallet fears entering. You'll find current comics and often great past treasures. The staff is very helpful and they are big comic geeks. It can get extremely crowded at times, but it's still always worth the trip. They also sell figurines, and video games.

Great selection

by Archie R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,901

Forbidden Planet has a really nice selection of comic books, art books, movie toys and merchandise, action figures, t-shirts and more. The fleet of cute nerds behind the counters know their stuff and can help you find what you're looking for. While I was in art school, I used to go several times a month and stock up on the old cheap comics that they sell for a quarter in the back, for use in my various homework projects. FP is a lot of fun, and everyone is welcome, from the nerd on a mission to the casual browser. Great location in Union Square makes it a perfect place to wander in and out of while waiting for a movie or dinner reservations.

My son's favorite store

by Anonymous

Every time I take my son to the city, he HAS to make a stop in Forbidden Planet. He loves comic books and video games, so he's in heaven here. The place is very big, and he has a great time looking everything over, and would spend the whole day there if I let him. They also carry Pokemon stuff, and he loves that too. The only downside is that it gets very crowded when we go ont the weekends. If you can go during the week, you'll be better off.

cool hangout for the alternative indoor kids

by anna w. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,202

ok, so clearly you have to love either comic books, dungeons and dragons, pewter figurines, or any number of other role playing or card based games - but if you do, this is a really great place to indulge all those desires. this place has the most extensive comics - um.. graphic novels - collection that i've ever seen, and a whole upstairs devoted to tournaments of magic or pokemon or whatever card game the kids are into these days. love this place!

PROS: feel like a cool nerd for a change
CONS: none

Comic Books

by William L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,497

Forbidden Planet has everything relating to comics from the American comics such as Marvel to the Japanese anime and manga. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable. I had to go there and find a comic I have never heard of for my friend's birthday and when i mentioned it to a staff member they knew immediently what I was talking about and find it for me. The also sell dvds, figurines, and much more. If you are into comics it is definitely a place you should take a look at.

by Alma Z. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 693

Forbidden Planet offers a wide selection of new comics, graphic novels, toys, games, and DVDs for hard core geeksters to sci fi nuts right down to the hipster wannabe cool scenesters. You won't find too much commercial products in there. Mainly you'll find underground literature and pop culture artifacts. Makes great gifts if you're looking for originality.

Great For Current Comics

by joey a. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 244

Forbidden Planet is a new comic store. The y have a nice set-up with lots of figurines and other cool collectibles. They only carry new issues of comics, no back issues, which is a porblem for most comic collectors. They do though have paperbacks and new comics for the new collector or child. The prices were okay.

Stash of comics

by David n. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,680

Everything is pretty much just stashed. The building is big but faded inside. No problem finding recent comics but i doubt you'll get the back issues you want unless its a graphic novel. The place has got action figures, t-shirts, games, anime and what not. But the enviorment is pretty croweded. The employees seem pretty random to even be there so i guess in a sense their laid back. If your in the area it's worth a stop i suppose. When it comes to image its realllly the opposite of mid town comics.

Sci-fi & comics geeks second home.

by Dina A. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,642

Full of everything nerdy and geeky. Filled with rows of comics, althought not the best of selection since it only carries mostly Marvel, Horse and DC. There is a simple video games section with a playable tv screen. Upstairs is the anime section.

The staff is a little -too- friendly and sometimes are loud as hell. But they are friendly ( its because I'm a female in a comic book store :P ).

They have cool display cases filled with figurines that sometimes I wonder who the hell buys, because they're always there everytime I go there. Prices are standard value, place is usually cramped.

good selection of toys, bad selection of older stuff

by Harry T. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 422

They have a lot of neat new toys, but missing a lot of the vintage comics. I wish they had a better selection, but they just don't have it. I'd go elsewhere like st. mark's comics instead. They also seem to carry video games as well, so you can come here for that. Staff is ok and helpful. Store is a bit small.

Forbidden Planet is a very cool store that serves up a fascinating combination of comic books, toys, horror and japanese toys. The staff isn't particularly helpful but then again its not macys. A little looking and you should be able to locate what you need.

Forbidden Planet

by Herald P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,959

Forbidden Planet is a great comic book, toy and manga shop. They've got a great selection of newer material but very little old material. This is a great place to shop although on weekends it gets really crowded. The staff isn't very friendly and you pretty much have to find what your looking for on your own.

PROS: good selection
CONS: unpleasant staff

Good location

by Renae E. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,854

The location is great, and they are a good store with a wide selection of new books, but they have been slowly taken over by their video game section.

The world of fantasy at your fingertips

by Phyllis S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,831

These comic scene veterans were originally a spinoff of the London store. They have a great selection of graphic novels, carry most of the new comics and many comic related toys. The service is sketchy with some of the staff being real helpful and some of them useless. Worth at least one visit when you are in Greenwich Village.

PROS: Nice stuff to look at
CONS: some surly staff members

Best Comic Store EVAR

by Cody A. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,880

If you're on the lookout for a classic graphic novel, just released comic book, or life-sized foam bust of an orc, Forbidden Planet is the place for you. A giant two-story comic-book store near Union Square, FP is a geeky dream come true. It's also big and accessible enough to where you won't feel out of place if you're just a casual comic book reader (like myself), and the staff is generally friendly and helpful, not comicbook-guy-esque.The DVDs in the Anime section and Games are fairly overpriced though, so go elsewhere for that. (27$ for Spirited Away? I think not).

PROS: Great Selection, Good Prices, Great Atmosphere
CONS: Videos too expensive, not much vintage material

The best store to buy your old or new comics!

by Dan Y. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,926

This is probably the best store I found for comic collectors to buy their new/used old/new comics! You can find a great selection of comics there and the big (very nice) staff and crew is great with helping finding the comic book you are looking for! I go there every week to find some great never before seen or special out of print comics you can not find anywhere else! The store is pretty big for a comics only store and the location is perfect - On Broadway. 5/5 Go there if you can and buy some cheap comic books! :)

PROS: Cheap, good selection, good service, good location
CONS: none

If it's obscure or hard to find, chances are - they have it!

by Jessica M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,301

What an awesome store! Anytime I've called ahead to check on an item I am greeted by a friendly voice who is more than happy to assist me. They have a wonderful selection of items, are willing to do special ordering (but usually don't have to) and are very reasonably priced! It's a fan boys dream home!

PROS: Price, staff, knowledge, selection
CONS: location - parking sucks!

Comic Collector's Delight

by Joan R. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 178

This is the perfect spot for a comic book collector. They have such a wide variety of titles that any collector will be able to find items here that they just have to have. They do have a lot of Sci-Fi themed items but you will of course find some of your childhood favorites as well. I like to pick up some Christmas gifts here for those hard to please people on my list. I use them as stocking stuffers and they generally get a very good reaction. Don't hesitate to ask the staff for ideas as they really know the stock well and are more than willing to pass their vast comic knowledge along to you.
