When I was younger, around thirteen, and first getting into music, the used cd section was like a candy store. They have a decent selection of used major label cd's at fairly good prices. However, my musical preferences have changed. They never seem to carry any of the more outr independent music that I prefer nowadays. The atmosphere of the store is not so great either - quite creepy, actually. The store is dingy and I feel like I am about to get my purse stolen. The prices of new merchandise are too high unless they are on sale. I suggest you look elsewhere for music and DVDs.
PROS: Fairly cheap used CDs
CONS: Poor selection, expensive, dirty and creepy
I was very impressed with the Strawberries in Downtown Crossing today. Finally, they have been doing renovations and the place is looking good. I was expecting chaos today at the Bronson Arroyo CD signing, but everything went off without a hitch. Bracelets were handed out and the lines were organized and went quickly. I was also suprised to see a friendly and smiling staff. Lots to choose from. Keep an eye out for more signings, as they are not always publicized.
PROS: New look, friendly staff
CONS:
I've never felt stranger than when I went shopping in Strawberries. First of all, the entire store was dirty and run-down, and I felt as if something could collapse upon me at any given moment. The selection was essentially limeted to the strange paring of rap and country. There were more toys and music accessories within the store than actual music. Despite the fact that the store was huge, I think I only saw three employees. This store is to be avoided. Just go to Virgin.
Strawberries is not the place for me to go if I want to buy a cd unless its a hard to find one. Other wise I go to a bigger retail deparment store and can usually do better on price. Vidoe game stuff is very pricey. The store I think needs some TLC. I wouldnt really recommend this one.
I would certainly make a trip out to strawberries if I wanted a new cd, but that is rare these days (since it is so much easier to download the file through an online music service). For this reason, strawberries has adopted the DVD and Video Game retail business - in these sections (especially video games), they offer terrible prices, that can easily be beat at other local retailers .
Strawberries should be a hot place to find music and movies. And it is often crowded but I think that's simply because it's in a busy area. Once you're inside the store seems run down and the people you bump into are a cross between creepy and just plain scary. It's hard to find a worker who cares deeply about music or one who could even tell you where to find the Amelie DVD. The prices are nothing to write home about unless they are running a special, in which case they are great. Look for specials but head somewhere else for browsing.
PROS: Huge Store and Great Specials
CONS: Gross and Run Down
