Fat Boy Drive In
I appreciate old-timer's accounts of the good 'ol days, I really do, but what is the big deal about the Fat Boy drive-in restaurant in Brunswick Maine?
When I was little, I remember going to drive-in theatres with my parents. Muppet Movie and Cannon Ball Run double-feature, chillin' in the backseat with my footie pajamas and a pillow. Awesome. I also remember hitting Fat Boy's with Grandma and Grandpa, getting a burger and fries with the chocolate Frappe.. mmmm. I REMEMBER these times with fondness. The time spent with the adults I loved at these places. It doesn't mean that the food or the service is great.
I took my Mother to the Fat Boy drive-in restaurant recently. The waitress was nice in a "I'm smiling at you because it's my job" sort of way, and she brought our food right out. I got the cold cheeseburger and cold fries with a warm soda. My mother got the lobster roll and cold onion rings, with 3 hour-old coffee. The burger was the same kind of frozen meat-patty that you would get at any other fast-food place, and the whole thing was flat as a pancake. My Mom's lobster roll was.. not as good as I remember it. In Maine, it really is a bad thing if your lobster roll is worse than McDonald's lobster roll.
The price of the food was definitely not nostalgic. Apparently we were paying for the convenience of eating in our car and staring at all the other suckers sitting in their cars.
