The building is an L-shaped white adobe with burgundy awnings and very inviting. We arrived just prior to lunch time and the place was hopping already. One of the waiters signaled to us to go ahead and sit at a table. Inside is very spacious with an open feeling. It's all multi-paned windows with crystal chandeliers and etched mirrors. The color scheme is white and green with wood pillars. The white-topped tables are surrounded by green vinyl chairs surrounded by chrome. Sounds a bit cheesy, I know. It's a mixed decor but it all somehow worked and made us feel very welcome.
Lunch technically begins at 11:30AM, and we had arrived at 11:10, so Ruben gave us lunch menues to look at while we sipped our drinks and waited for the appropriate time to order. We started of with Cuban coffee served in little demitasse-like cups. It was very strong but also just bursting with flavor. If I lived in the area, I would frequent this place just for that coffee.
When the time arrived, 'The Male' went with the Versailles Classic Sampler for $10.95. This came with Picadillo (White rice & black beans), a ground beef concoction, roast pork, sweet plantains, ham croquette, yuca, and a tamale. That's a whole lotta food for 11 bucks, and it was just very good. Cuban food is.. I hate to use the word 'bland', let's say delicately seasoned instead. Most of what we had was very mild, but that is not to say we did not enjoy it. We liked it very much in fact.
Now, we could have split his and both gotten full, but no, we're a bit daft sometimes so I ordered the Criolla Sampler, also for $10.95, which came with yellow rice, black beans, shredded beef in creole sauce, fried pork chunks, ham croquettes, sweet plantains, and yuca. I was the smart one. This was the best of the two by far. I especially enjoyed the shredded beef in creole sauce, which was had a bit of a zing to it. The flavor was even more pronounced next to the mild flavor of the other items.
Highly Recommended
PROS: Generous portions, reasonably priced
CONS: Parking is sparse
