I have never visited Thrifty Joe's. I do believe that I will be happy when I finally get there based on other reviews. But, someone stated in the reviews to call ahead to sell your books. I have called twice. The first time to make sure they were open during the holidays. I casually mentioned that I had some books for sale. Nope, buyer isn't in today. Called after the holidays, same story. Seems there buyer is only there on certain days. So... if you have books to sell, CALL FIRST. Make sure someone is there who has the authority to transact that type of business with you. 'Nuf said.

I love looking for books at Thrifty Joes and selling my old books. I like to read series of books or all the books of an author. I have found so many books there-- sometimes the total series. The books are well organized. However, if I cannot find a book the staff always is helpful and finds it for me.The staff is always polite. Sometimes the book buyer is not there but the staff is accomodating and helpful so I know when to come back.

I went into the bookstore because I was waiting for another store to open. Well 2 and 1/2 hours later I left! I could believe how many newer books were available there. Not just older ones. I got a game for my Wii and a Oprah book-club that was only a couple of months old. Plus I picked up a yoga CD. There are cookbooks, magazines etc.... This store is a must to visit, I was very impressed!!

Thrifty Joe's is the best! If you are looking for a particular book, or even perhaps a video game, Thrifty Joe's is the place to look. I have found many used books in perfect condition at a fraction of the original cost. The staff is helpful, when you need help, and don't continually interrupt your meandering thru the shelves. If you need to sell books to the store, it is best to call for an appointment with the owner. If you have an appointment -- she'll be there. She is a joy to work with.

Thrifty Joe's is my favorite bookstore! The staff is friendly and available if you need assistance but will allow you to roam freely if that is your desire. I spend hours perusing the shelves. They are well organized and it is easy to locate the topics you are interested in. They also have collections of DVDs, albums, and games. Jan Lehrack is not new to the bookstore business and her expertise is apparent. If you live or work on the west side, make a point of stopping in and you too may find it to be your favorite bookstore. If you do not live on the west side, you are really missing out!

Jan Lehrack's store is my favorite anywhere. The variety of book titles is extensive, and range from very recent to ones I haven't been able to locate for years. I have also purchased a collectible volume. My neighbor has sold a number of books and records at Thrifty Joe's, and was very pleased with the service.

This store is the kind that don't exist often enough any longer. It is an independent enterprise, and a wonderful resource for books, CDs, DVDs, video games, etc. I've been a longtime customer for many years.

Give yourself plenty of time to browse. You'll need it.

I am in a book club which reads a book a month and my library never has the book I need. I got sick of paying full price for books so I searched for a used book store near my house. I found Thrifty Joe's online, sent them an email asking if they had the book I needed. I got a prompt reply telling me they had the book in needed and would hold it for me. I went to pick it up and it was only $6 as opposed to $15 at Borders. It's just as close as Borders or my library and the hours are very convenient! I loved it! They have magazines for $1 so I picked up three photography mags for my husband! Great little store!!

CONS: It is only too apparent that they don't care if they have your business or not. The woman that works there is fairly helpful and attentive, but she's not there often. And when she's not, you can't sell any books, and you can't easily get help with anything else either. The guys there are all... well, I'll avoid the word I was thinking of, but suffice it to say that they spend more time texting on their phones and chatting about music than doing anything else as far as I can tell. I wanted to make a purchase and the guy behind the counter looked up from his phone for a second and then looked back down. That's the kind of customer service you can expect.

PROS: Their prices seem to be quite a bit lower than Bookmans'. They have a pretty good selection of out-of-print titles.

I absolutely love to read and I am new reader of James Patterson. I started to find books of his here and there and then I started to read his Alex Cross series - I could not find Jack & Jill anywhere. I tried other book stores in the area but they did not have much of a selection - I told myself Thrifty Joe's would be the last place before I just gave up and I am so glad I made that trip. Its an awesome store and the people are great, I found the book I was looking for and many more. They often have new books for sale -- the ones that have 50 holds on them at the library and they are normally half the cover price!

Hope this review helps and you love it as much as I do!

I've been in the Glendale area for years and they still haven't corrected this annoying policy: they have one person on staff that is able to buy books. If they aren't there, you can't sell books, and they typically leave by 5pm. On several occasions I have gone to the store when they are supposed to be there only to find that I've wasted a trip because they aren't in that day. Make sure to call before you go in if you're looking to sell.

I go there every week if i can, and I love this store. I am huge record collector, so their store is perfect. The people that work there are so nice and friendly and aesome, and I alwys find books and records of a very high quality at very low prices. the records usually range between 2-7 dollars, with the exception of the White Album, Let it Be, and Sgt Pepper (Beatles ) which are 15 and a little out of my reach lol. i think this store is better than ebay, plus you dont have to pay shipping. ;D

I went to Thrifty Joes to see if they were a book trader. I found out, much to my chagrin, that they only bought books. The sales clerk was very helpful and provided me with a pamphlet with all the Arizona booksellers and suggested a few that provided credit for trades.

I looked around Thrifty Joes and thought it was a neat store. They have an incredible selection of used books. It is organized very well.

Prices are high for a used book store, at least where I used to live. This is definitely a convenient place to find specific books you are looking for, but you I prefer hunting in thrift stores and on E-bay....due to the lower prices.

I also don't think they pay a decent price for books. According to the clerk, they randomly select a price for the book based on condition and the demand. I'm sure they mark them up at least 50% so, one may get $2.00-$3.00 for a quality hardback book. I can't say for certain because I won't be selling any books there, but based on my experience that's what I'd estimate.

At any rate, if I'm in need of a very specific book I would be willing to pay full price for, I might check out Thrifty Joes to see if they have it there before going to a retailer. Other than that, you won't see me in there hunting.

PROS: Nice selection.
CONS: No trade credits and book prices are high.

This is a great store that buys and sells lots of media product. Books, CD's, DVD's, VHS tapes, video games, comic books and more. You can trade in for store credit, or get cash (you get more in store credit than you would in cash). They have a great selection and are constantly adding new product, so you are not looking at the same old items every time you visit. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. It is a fun shop, and the personal touch is a nice break from the huge corporate-run book stores.

PROS: great selection, nice staff, personal touch
CONS: none

Everyone raves about this place, but I have found a couple others in town are a lot more relaxing and easier to find things in. They do have alot of books and they buy used books and cds. I have purchased a couple of cds here. The kids like the other place we go much better, but this is a nice store.

Real happy with the selection. I was able to complete some sets I have. And the staff was so helpful in finding what I needed. They also have a large selection of movies, including VHS, which are getting hard to find. They will also buy books from you. The books I have seen there always seem to be in really good condition.

No, it's not Borders/Barnes & Noble, but being used items, the prices are great, andI feel way more at home here...and have spent more money here too! Friendly atmosphere, cozy store without feeling cramped...or like the shelves will topple over on you like some used bookstores. Been coming here for years since they've been at their old smaller location. The cafe unfortunately was no longer there the last few times I visited, which was a shame because she made a great carrot cake! Prices are reasonable, and it's always an adventure to hit your favorite sections and see what the newest additions may be. All kinds of books, music, movies, video games, magazines, and some other changing categories. Will definitely keep coming back.

I LOVE going to Thrifty Joes. They have a large selection of books, VHS movies, DVD movies and CDs. I always leave there with more that I planned on spending as they have a GREAT selection. They also take in books, movies and cds in trade and that helps my book budget. They have a GREAT childrens section as well. As 2 added bonuses, they have a mini USPS sub station in the back of the store, which is good as I am almost always out of stamps! They also have a small caf in the back of the store, which is nice for a quick espresso and muffin! The staff is friendly, and if I cannot find a specific book, they look it up in their system to see if they even have it. I go to this store about once every 2 months or so when I have enough to trade in!

This used bookstore is the best. They have tons of reasonable priced, good quality used items. Including: video games and accessories, music, books, and movies. Thrifty Joe's is a family owned business that also buys books, etc. from their customers.
They have a great selection, with new stuff all the time!

I worked at Thrifty Joe's in the 90s and it was one of my favorite jobs of all time. Excellent source for all things rare and obscure. Unfortunately the Nevada stores closed years ago, but people in Arizona are fortunate enough to still have theirs. We miss ya!

Call BEFORE going there if you plan to sell books. You will thank me for this advice! They only buy books when it fits their needs so call and ask first before hauling them all in there.
