Ratings_icons Ocean Floor is a scam and has poor business practices!

Madison M.

My husband and I went to Ocean Floor and they told us a parrot fish that they assured us woule be ok to mix with a bala shark. shortly after we got the fish in the tank the parrot fish picked apart the bala shark i called the store and they told me that "they would never say anything like that" -however my husband was standing right there when they said it. so my husband called back and got a manager named bonnie who said that they will not refund us and that none of her employees would have said anything like that and that they reserve the refuse refunds to anyonce. he then advised her that he would be contacting the BBB and pursue this to the full extend of his means and she said in a snarky tone "good luck with that". the customer service at this company is less that dirt. the management is poor and have no people skills. it wouldnt be a surprise to me that after reviewing all 38 negative reviews of this store that they wiill not be shut down soon.

Ratings_icons Ocean Floor is CLOSING !!!

Samantha J.

We could only hope!!!

I can't Believe in this recession that such an appalling local business is still around. Bonnie and Aileen (Store Management) are seriously horrible people. (Shameful things about them have been told to me by Employees. Bad treatment of animals as well as unpaid commissions and capricious write ups. Turn over is insane due to Bonnie and her bi-polar craziness.) No care goes into the animals or the store up keep. Animals not fed, and I have seen employees actually pull out fish that were dying and malnutrition, then thrown them to the large diseased fish tank in the freshwater area.Prices vary on whomever is working, and then daily price changes are made up . One day i went in to buy a Coralife fixture. I priced it . And then returned on payday to buy it. The price jumped nearly 36 bucks. Already asking twice to three times what you could pay online. I was trying to support local business.

If you want to support Horrible people who treat you like crap , then by all means Shop here!

Go To Fins and Friends, Aqua Touch , Pets Inc, or even Pets Mart.

Ratings_icons Ocean Floor is a Rip Off - Pricing is highest in Phoenix

Salt W.

This place is a joke. They have got to be the most expensive fish store in Phoenix. All of the salt water fish are double what Fins and Friends or Aquatouch charge - don't buy your fish here. Most of the high end items do not have any prices on them - they seem to make up the price as the day goes along and Rick will always, always say; "the price just went up last week" or "I will give it to you for this price because next week.....its going up." Their tanks are some of the most trashy I have ever seen - they don't ever seem to clean them. Be careful about buying any frozen food there - they are 2-3 dollars more than every where else and they try and pass off the smaller cubes at the normal full-size cube price. Check the expiration date on all of their chemicals before you buy them, many are dusty, dirty and out-of-date. Sorry to be so down on this place, you just need to be aware that you can get almost everything they carry at other, better run stores for 1/2 the price.

Ratings_icons Ocean Floor is lame, weak.

slim p.

I don't like to say never but I will not be going back to this turd of a place, considering the flakes and dipshits running this hole. Their livestock is in bad shape as several clown loaches I purchased quickly died. Judging from many of the other reviews here, Ocean Floor seem masterful at alienaing customers and drumming up negative word of mouth for their so-called business, bravo 'ya ocean floor management dodos!

Ratings_icons Ocean Floor is okey

Edwin A.

I went to ocean floor a couple of times and I gotta say I like it. The prices are kinda high but I guess it's because they sell many produces you can't get in other pet stores petco, petsmart, ect. Also allot of people say that the employee's don't know nothing about fish keeping, but shouldn't one do research about fish before buying them. They also sell way more species of fish than other pet stores. What I didn't like was the fish guaranty they have. I only buy fish they don't sell at petco or petsmart.also the store is very hot during summer days so it gets humid inside cuz of fish tanks. Anyway I would recommend this store if you are looking for a specific fish or item.

Ratings_icons OCEAN FLOOR - Worst customer service in town!

els a.

These people think they can get away with being rude to their customers - most of the employees are painfully ignorant and even management thinks that being rude will not cost them business - guess what - it just did. They diss other fish stores and manufacturers in order to make you loyal to them and then when they don't want to honor their commitment to you their customer, they ridicule you for not having the common sense to have just gone elsewhere - OK. I will spend my money elsewhere permanently and I will even contact each and every one of the manufacturers of products that you carry and advise them of how you represent their product - EXTREMELY NEGATIVELY! When they close down and I find their employees in other fish stores - I will refuse to do business with them and I will make sure that the management of the store knows why. REALLY.

Employees at other fish stores can be very knowledgeable, support other local businesses in the fishy line of work and are very customer friendly and well-trained. I guess in this economy most have gotten rid of the employees who can't be bothered except for Ocean Floor.

Well Ocean Floor, I can't be bothered either. I am NEVER coming back and I AM going to bother to take the time to give you a bad review EVERYWHERE!

The prices - well, they make you pay for the nastiness and ignorance - more than anybody else!

And yes Ms. Manager, I am the one who did finally call you an idiot to your face once I had enough of your snittiness!

Ratings_icons Pricing And Quality

annie s.

Pricing is Insane! they advertised in-store a 29 Gallon Oceanic All In One Bio Cube for 490 bucks. I went to Aqua Touch And Found the same tank for less than 250.00 So the whole Idea that because it is locally owned , prices might be higher is thrown out the window. Because a Store Like Aqua Touch or even Pets Inc can get you a better deal.. This place is trying to rip people off. Also half the freshwater tanks are full of sick and underfed .The children that work for this shop do not know what they are talking about. Incorrect information given to me many times. I do not know who is running this place but they care more about making money than taking care of the live stock that they bring in. They also sell a brand called Tropical Science , stay away from this product. I did some Research and found out it is made Here in Phoenix AZ in a giant DIRTY warehouse and not in a lab where other fish products are made. Lack of consistency can destroy your Aquarium. So if You hate Animals go to The Ocean Floor, you might even be treated similar by the management and staff. DO NOT let them fool you . They are horrible people who care nothing about the animals and even less about you.

I have been keeping fish for well over 15 years and even worked at a LFS for 4 and never ran into issues like this with a dechlorinator. I bought their Complete Care water treatment from an online store and used it to do my 30% weekly water changes in 3 grow out tanks and it killed 32 Tanganyikan cichlid juveniles. When I made them aware of the issue they said they do not give refunds, when I did not ask for one in the first place. I just wanted to see if they wanted me to send them the bottle for testing so no one else goes through the heartache of losing their Pets. The online store gave me a refund on the product no ? asked,so there must be an issue with it.I have never been to Ocean Floor nor would I go there if it was in my city.Dave from North Carolina

Very pricey, if it's available at Petco or Petsmart or online there's no need need to get at Ocean Floor. There used to be a section for frogs, turtles, spiders etc, now it's used for storage or something. The last time I went there were virtually no aquatic plants available, not that I'm buying any but I just wanna compare prices (OF's Anubias plants were priced around 12 bucks - more than twice than the rest . On the plus side - good selection of tropicals and accessories that you can't find at Petco or Petsmart. Lots of gravel to choose from.

Ratings_icons OMG

"The place is crawling with roachs, I saw a rat. The prices are way over retail (check that one out for yourself). The staff kept pushing additives on me, by the way they make these additives. I have been doing tropical fish tanks for 10 plus years and have never used things like "Nitro-max". I can't say anything nice about the live stock, my Wife pointed out alot of diseases. She dose not know much about fish but she dose know a sick group of them when she sees them. I also visited the salt water side, first the tanks are dirty and coverd with algee, second alot of them are showing sighns of stress, therid almost all of the corals in there sale tanks where dieing, and forth OMG the prices! I shop at Aqua Touch and there prices are high but not as high as this Ocean Floor place. I have never been so taken back by pure lack of care. It is varry clear this store is made to make as much money off its customers, with little care to its customers. In my IMHO they should close the store and rebuild everything after they get rid of the roachs of corse. Hey tip to the owners try highering people that know how to take care of fish. Note to people shoping there: Products like this "Nitro Max" will NOT keep fish alive good filtration dose. Products like this are made varry cheaply and sell for lots. Buying stuff like this will only keep you wasteing your money on products like this. Don't buy them. The best addvise is get bigger filtration then your tank needs and do resurch. Shop around at different fish stores, and for god sake your on a computer so google info on keeping your pets. Don't take BS such as "you need this bottle of stuff or you will kill everything"."

Ratings_icons Common Courtesy

Fred A.

I've been a customer on and off since 1991 and have seen it evolve thru quite a few changes. It used to be "THE PLACE" to go once upon a time. We've started up a Koi pond in our large backyard, so I've started shopping around for fish and supplies. There's a few bad apples that spoils the visiting experience. The young ladies are very courteous, but mostly seem to have limited experience. That I can live with. The back forty has a few gentlemen that know their stuff. Kenny stands out, he's customer friendly and courteous. Went in on one of his days off. Plump middle aged guys talking with a customer extensively, only guy around. Waited 10 min to be served, made eye contact, got blown off. Conversation continues, finally got service by someone else. The other butthead didn't even have enough manners to say something like "hello I'm busy, let me get someone else". If it wasn't for Kenny, I wouldn't let the door hit me in the ass. Got his schedule, I don't have to deal with buttheads.

Ratings_icons Large store but not perfect

Pop M.

We are fish lovers and we love to visit this shop because it's almost the largest fish store in phoenix. However, we felt quite disappointed with the shop. We tried to setup a saltwater tank and the staff in there provide us not so useful information. The price is way too high compared to other stores. The living rock/lbs is >$10 ?because of its premium grade ??? Bottom line is ocean floor is a great place to visit, but reconsider your decision before any purchasing.

I can say that I was an employee for this company when it was under Great Western Pet Supply. Frank and Carol Mineo were the owners but my understanding they are no longer together, but still own separate parts of the company. Due to my unique position in the company I was able to see some of the inner workings. Let me tell you, Animal Kingdom/Ocean Floor and I am not sure of the other names of the stores, but I know back then the mark up on their products were insane!!!! Puppies especially. Buy them for 60-125$ from the puppy mill in the midwest and mark them up to 800-1500$. It is about the money, they do not really care about the condition/care/maint of the animals UNLESS financially gaining. The didactics of the management...like a small commune. Frank, Chanelle, Tim, MaryEllen (or Ann)...so on and so forth all of them related and MONEY MONGERS!!! I would not now or ever give them a dime of my money. Call me disgruntled...but I saw what I saw and would rather go to "the other pet stores" anyday.

Ratings_icons Return Policy unclear

I puchased some supplies and two Angelfish. After three days one died. I brought it back in a half a cup of frozen tank water. I was tolfd I needed to return with another water sample. I had followed the receipt instructions for return yet I was not dealt with fairly. For the cost of a $6.99 fish this store has lost me as well as all my friends and family who own fish as customers.

I particularly like this store and have had excellent customer service every time. The staff is really knowledgeable and friendly. We end up tipping the employee $10-$20 because they're so helpful. I am very surprised at the negative reviews I'm reading. I'm guessing they're from disgruntled employees trying to "get back".

Ratings_icons I called fro a quote on live rock for my reef tank....

Johnny C.

The ocean floor rep. in aquatics said that uncured rock was $6 a pound and cured was 13.99 a pound! Hwy robbery, I bought my live rock from Petco at an avg. $4-5 a pound. The salt fish they also quoted me was 3x the price of other smaller pet stores, if you want to waste money then shop here, I won't.

Ratings_icons Down Hill

Anonymous

I have been shopping at this business for a number of years and have watched it go down hill. The live fish (fresh/salt) have been well over priced and not a good selection to choose from. The frozen food selection has also become almost nothing in stock. The store has changed to almost all new employees with very little knowledge of what they are selling. The tanks are not kept up there are alot of dead fish. And there is still no parking for such a large building. I would hope that they turn things back around and get knowledgeable employees and rethink what direction they are heading for.

Ratings_icons Impressive at first sight

A S.

The store looks impressive, it is enormous, lots of beautiful display tanks. However, once you start looking closer, things look worse. The first thing that made me feel ill was that they sell tattooed and dyed fish. This is a practice I just cannot comprehend, as though fish don't come in enough colors naturally, we need ones with I <3 U tattooed on them? I don't understand, and it speaks of their ethical values. The employess are just pathetic, I had an employee attempting to help me who couldn't even pronounce 'cichlid'. Noone could tell me if it was New World, or African, I had to look it up myself in a book they sell. I could go on all day, but hopefully you get the idea.

This store is becoming worse by the day. The first time I went to this store was about 2 years ago, and initially I was incredibly impressed at the overall size of it. However, the customer service has always been terrible, which is a bit of a conundrum considering they are commission motivated. It seems like it would be easier to steal a fish then to actually get someone to help you. Yet, the part that will make me never buy from there again is their pricing. It is utterly ridiculous for their saltwater fish. They price their livestock at nearly 400% the going rate in some circumstances. The last time I went in there they had a P. Clown for over 50 dollars, and it wasnt even 2 inches long. All I could do was laugh.

The freshwater pricing is more reasonable. However, if you are looking at buying a saltwater fish from there you must be a complete imbecile. You would be much better off giving me half the money you were going to spend, Id kick you in the nuts, and we could call it a day. Trust me, that wouldnt be half as bad as what the INCREDIBLY OVERPRICED Ocean Floor would do

Ratings_icons Buyer Beware

Anonymous

We purchased a $50 fish from Ocean Floor in Dec 2006- we were told at the time that should the fish become too large for our tank that they buy back.... well when this fish became too aggressive for the other fish we called and spoke to an employee there about buy backs for this reason and were told to come on in. Upon arriving they told us they never buy back fish and don't know who told us such a thing. There are plenty of other shops to go to... avoid this store unless you never want to make a return.

Andrea M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 271

We went here based on the other 3 reviews we saw. We were impressed. The place was clean, the staff was friendly and helpful and the store was huge. The girl behind the counter commented on how cute our son was. What mother doesn't love that? Though we are used to the California selections of tropical fish, this place was not bad for Arizona. We will be shopping here from now on. It is also a great place for kids!

PROS: Nice staff, great for children, huge clean store
CONS: Not as many tropical fish as I like to see

you can find a good selection of pets and supplies in here. the staff can be a little difficult sometimes due to the fact that they thay work on commission so they are sometimes kind of pushy. This is a very large store so there is plenty of room to move around, and it is in a nice location with a lot of parking.
