I haven't been in an school fountain that had it dead on in a long time!! McAlpines had incredible food (that come in generous serving sizes) and the seemingly endless list of options for shakes, floats, malts, Italian sodas and so much more. The staff are friendly and give excellent service. Not to mention the whole ambiance of the place! I will go back time and again!

The places smelled wonderful - bacon, beef, old upholstery. I walked in the door just after noon, right behind another fellow who was finally seated somewhere toward the back of the long, deep restaurant.

I'm legally, though not totally, blind. I think that I stand out with my white cane. You wouldn't have known it here. I have just enough eyesight to know if someone is looking at me. After nearly 15 minutes standing at the door, others seating themselves at vacant seats at a counter I couldn't see, I was asked by a waitress, "Has anyone talked to you?"

I could hear them talking among themselves, the waitresses, that is; "It's a little busy," or "It's more chaotic that busy." I can see just a little. I can scan and tell when I'm being looked at. I can tell when I've gotten someone's attention. So far as I could tell, the wait staff barely looked at me, much less acknowledged that I was there. What I did finally get was, "Has anyone talked to you." This after nearly a quarter of an hour. Not "Hi! We'll be right with you," but, "Has anyone talked to you?

After several more minutes, I was told that table was being cleaned in the back and, to her credit, the waitress who had spoken to me offered her hand to guide me there.

I made a point of noting the smell of bacon and opted for the celebrated BLT with potato salad. The food arrived quickly, but everything from that point on seemed to slow down. The potato salad was tasty, but the BLT was nothing special, and I certainly could have found better bacon were I making my own. I wasn't demanding, in the end. I just wanted the bill, though I was offered a refill on my drink well into the meal. Someone not my waitress, asked me if I was ready for a check. Acknowledging this, I wait only a short time for the check to come, though I waited nearly another 10 minutes for it and my card to be taken.

I still have to say that I'm curious about the burgers and whether or not they do malts, though I'm not thrilled at the prospect of going back. In the end, the lack of good attentive service will likely keep me away from discovering anything nicer about a place that I had been looking forward to trying out.

Pros: Quaint, old diner feel

Cons: Ignored at the door, mediocre food

Step back to the 50's in a coverted drug store soda fountain that opened in 1929. They have expanded to have antiques, vintage clothing. The sandwiches all looked good, my friend had a Rueban that was excellent. Good coffee, and the girls at the soda fountain were friendly, cute, and could tell the history. The juke box plays non stop Rock and Roll.

Pros: Excellent soup and sandwiches

.

Not bad hamburgers. Yet they don't serve fries. It's got some wear and tear, but it's the retro style that adds the atmosphere to the joint. If you like 50's diners than this is a great place for you.

We had lunch at Mac Alpines. The veggie sandwich is great and they even had a good selection for kids. The shakes were phenomenal. The surroundings are definitely interesting. My only complaint would be that it didn't seem as clean as maybe a restaurant should be. Service was great and overall a good place to check out.

Pros: customer service

Cons: too far from my house to visit more often

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Phoenix! I drive down from Sedona at least once a week to eat at MacAlpine?s. It is a great place to eat before the ball games downtown. The black bean burger is delicious. It is homemade and you sure can tell. MacAlpine's potato salad is the best I?ve ever had. The chocolate cake is to die for. I love it served with the mint chocolate chip ice cream. The waitresses are fantastic. You can tell they love there job!
There are so many things that make this restaurant exceptional: the food, the service but most of all would be the atmosphere. It is like you stepped out of a time machine into 1928. MacAlpine?s was a Rexall pharmacy until fairly recently and has been there for almost 80 years. I keep on telling the owners that some famous Hollywood producer is going to walk in someday and use the place for a movie or sitcom. It is that special!
Next door there is an antique and retro store. I have found some really cool furniture and great gifts for my house there. Take the time to go to MacAlpine?s. It is worth the trip!

MacAlpine's is such a unique treasure in Phoenix. The food is wonderful, freshly made, home cooked. I eat here at least one a week and have enjoyed every entree I have ever ate here. I especially recommend the club house, hot dogs and hamburgers. Their soups are fabulous! The atmosphere is charming. The owners and staff are wonderful! The Seeburg Jukebox from 1951 is really cool. MacAlpine's is hard to find. It is on the N.E. corner of 7th Street and Oak between McDowell and Thomas.

In the American world of chain restaurants, MacAlpine's is such a refreshing change!
The food is delicious. This is home cooking at its best: so much better than my mothers, thank goodness! The atmosphere is charming! The owners, Cary and Monica, are gracious hosts. A truly wonderful experience!

We had a blast at this darling restaurant. My granfather coundn't belive the soda fountain! He said it was just like the one on Main Street where he grew up. He used to ride his bike there on Saturday's and spend some of his hard earned cash from mowing lawns on a chocolate ice cream soda just like he had at MacAlpine's. The salads were great, malts amazing and our waitress was a doll! She looked like Betty Grable in full color! We WILL be back!

MacAlpine's has the best BLT I have ever had. Also, check out the chocolate covered cherry ice cream soda. This cute place is a fun, unique restaurant to go to when you have company in town. With out a doubt, worth the trip. We alway stop here for lunch when in the area.

We attended a private party at this restaurant and had a blast. A few weeks later, we attended their Friday night dinner and swing dance. The food was wonderful, the free lesson was awesome and the dance after was great. We eat lunch there on a regular basis and always enjoy it. MacAlpine's is 75 years old and filled with history. It has so much more to offer than the chains that have popped up all over. This is a glimpse into what made Phoenix. You have to check this awesome place out.
