Orthopedics at it's best.

by Jackie I. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,246

I had my first appt here today and didn't know what to expect after all there are lots of doctors and lots of patients waiting be seen. I didn't have to wait at all to check in. I was given some forms to fill out and before I was half way done they were calling me back. Didn't take long and Dr. Neilsen was seeing me and ordering xrays. The xray tech promptly came and got me and had me xrayed and back in my room in a matter of minutes. The doctor was able to look at the xrays and immediately give me a diagnosis. I was so pleased with the dr and staff I won't hesitate or worry about returning for my next appt.

PROS: Fast, prompt courtesy staff!
CONS: Can't think of any!

but it depends on who you see...

My son is an athlete. That means he has been seeing one dr. or another at TOI for over 10 years, and after a couple of mis-starts, we have a definite favorite - Brent Walker. Brent is technically a physician's assistant, and the first time we saw him it was under protest as my son had an injury that needed immediate attention, but the ortho surgeon had no openings for weeks. I was rude enough to tell Brent that I wanted a "real" doctor, that my son's athletic goals were a priority, and that I was very concerned that our appointment was with him instead of the surgeon. (What a "B" I was!)

Brent politely excused himself and left the room. But instead of sending the nurse back to kick us out, which is probably what I deserved, he came back with the surgeon. He explained that his educaiton and experience allowed him to do all evreything except actual surgery, and that if he ever had need of a second opinion, or if we wanted one for any reason, the "real" doctor was right there. Dr. X then concurred with everything Brent had told us and stated that Brent had his full endorsement and support. I was embarrassed to death BUT I now felt much more confident in listening to Brent's diagnosis and treatment. (And I apologized, profusely!!)

Over the next 10 years Brent gave my son absolutely excellent care through many injuries, large and small. Incidentally he saved us plenty of money, too, by teaching us to perform small physical therapies at home rather than take the time to go to a clinic. Due to Brent's care and diligence, a potentially serious injury was able to be cured completely (the only time we did need to use professional therapists, and Brent again arranged for alternative procedures that would be covered by our insurance, showing he cared just as much about my son's impending college scholarship as we did.) When my son graduated from high school, I sent Brent a thank-you note for all his help and for being the #2 man in my life - lol!

PROS: Brent is the best guy for an athlete, guaranteed!
