Ratings_icons Mood Swings Salon doesn't care about their customers

Sarah J.

I got a wax from Ava - she was great. Very efficient and polite. I asked the sales girl at checkout to stamp my parking ticket, so I could get my parking for free while at the salon. She replied that they no longer do that because there were some employees that were stamping for their friends. But, if I spent $60 (I believe this was the amount) on product or had 3 hours in services, they would stamp it for me. How is it my problem that they hire dishonest employees? Furthermore, what I'm hearing is that my business isn't important enough to warrant a parking validation. It's not a big deal to pay for parking, it's principle. This is why I am not a loyal customer and I venture to say that they don't have too many loyal customers. I tried to sumbit feedback on their web site (several times) and kept getting an error message.

Ratings_icons Abby is amazing!

I've been getting my hair cut by Abby for the past 5 years. She's amazing! She's got a great personality and does an awesome job! The only con about going here is that services are a bit on the pricey side.

The girl that cut my hair at Mood Swings was super cute and very nice. She asked me if I was good on products and I told her I was very happy already with the ones I had! I had a sorority meeting right after I left and I told a bunch of girls how much I loved it!

Ratings_icons Great Place for Pampering

dmagee30

Everyone needs to go here! Mood Swings was definitely one of the most accommodating Salons I have ever been to. The atmosphere was very inviting and relaxed and the overall spa experience was one of a kind. The services were above and beyond standards and most importantly very efficient. I would have no problem returned to Mood Swings in the future.

Ratings_icons Great Experience!

AnalisaX

I needed a haircut so I called and the receptionist was very polite and helped me find a stylist that had an opening last minute. My stylist really listened to my concerns and helped guide me in a direction I felt comfortable with because I wanted to try a new style. The stylist also put a bit of lip gloss and eye shadow on me after the hair cut and style, making me feel quite glamorous! She gave me an incredible head massage with essential oils before shampooing and a hand massage while my conditioner was in. Great experience!

Pros: Amazing Massages

Cons: None!

Ratings_icons Love the Vibe

pele0317

Loved the vibe at Mood Swings on Mill. I just got a bob and low + high lights by Jenna last week. She was super sweet and fun to talk too, so I know I'll be going back. I really love the hand massages and the hi quality Aveda product they use. I felt totally pampered! Even the head washing bins were more comfortable than other places I've been. My neck didn't hurt at all. That's HUGE in my book!

Pros: Hand massages!!

Ratings_icons Nominated Them for Best of City Search

Reyna T

I've had long hair all my life and a friend recommended I donate it the next time I cut it. Alex made it a very comfortable situation, even after i found out that donating 11 inches of hair was more than I planned on cutting. I donated, got a killer haircut then went and got my brows waxed by a bubbly blonde downstairs. All together it was a great experience and I recommend them to any woman that looks like she's in need of a good salon =)

Pros: super friendly staff, great stylists, awesome location

Cons: usually very busy, might have to wait for a sink

Ratings_icons I've never been let down!

EPG

Mood Swings was the first salon I went to when I moved to Tempe four years ago, and it's the only salon I've gone to since. I love the fact that it's on Mill, so I can do a little shopping after the cut and the Salon itself is actually really cool. I love the interior and had absolutely no idea all of that art was for sale until one of the hairdressers filled me in. Very cool. The best thing about Mood Swings is that the cuts are actually really affordable, which is great for a college student like myself. Overall, I'd trust Mood Swings with every hair on my head!!

Ratings_icons Much cooler than Tony&Guy!

Yancy

I love this place. I previously went to Tony&Guy and even though it was close to my house I did not feel the "hipness" they claim to have. At Mood Swings I felt they were cool without trying. They sell art work which I've never seen before at a salon and loved my haircut. I give them two thumbs up!

Ratings_icons Very affordable and effective facials!

Marijka

I went and had the Plant Peel a couple of weeks ago, which was done in a quick 15 minutes, with all natural products. The girl who did my facial explained every step to me and told me about how if I pre-booked my next appointment I could save $5. She also did an electricity treatment on me, FOR FREE! She said it would help loosen up the bacteria under my skin, which I guess would help with extractions for my next facial. The best part is that my face didn't peel at all, even though the results are as effective, if not greater, than that of a chemical peel. All in all, I loved Mood Swings and the facials are totally working!

Pros: All natural, organic products

I LOVE Aveda products and find a new amazing product every time I come to get my haircut at Mood Swings! With every cut comes a massage as well as a clear explanation of all the products being used and why. The atmosphere and staff is one of the most unique I have ever seen. Great building and great people who really know their stuff! I would recommend this salon to everyone, especially those who enjoy Aveda - a truly unique Aveda experience!

I have been going to Mood Swings since I moved here 7 years ago as a freshman at ASU. Not only is the building and atmosphere really cool, the people are so genuine and nice! I love facials and have tried many of the top spas in town and they just don't compare to Mood Swings. Just the exact amount of cleansing and relaxation. I would highly recommend this Salon & Spa!

Ratings_icons Best $40 I ever spent

AshleyOakes

I tried Mood Swings for the first time last month. Usually at upscale places the people are snooty and rob you of your money. I got a massage when they washed my hair and my stylist gave me a bunch of tips when she was doing my hair. Most places don't even style your hair after without a charge. I liked how she told me what products she was using and why, which made me want to buy them in the end. I will definitely be going back!

Pros: You get a massage with a haircut

Ratings_icons Awesome Customer Serivce from beginning to end!

totally rocks

So, I used to go to supercut ( I know, I know). But, I just always thought of getting a haircut as a maintenance type of thing. You're in, you're out, done. But, when I started going to Mood Swings it completely changed my mind! I see Alex and she is amazing. SHe starts off with a great shoulder and scalp massage that gives you goosebumps all over. From the second you sit in the chair until the very end of the service, everything is amazing.

As if the amazing haircut and service isn't enough, the front desk staff is amazing. They are friendly, cute, and outgoing. They offer tea, water, and coffee upon arrival. AND if you ask for it, they will give you a sensory journey which completely opens your senses and is soo relaxing!

I would definately recommend Mood Swings to anyone. Just try it at least once and I promise that you will never go back to your "in and out" ways.

OH, and did I mention you can always prebook your next appointment and save $5? TOTALLY AWESOME!

Pros: awesome hair, facials and waxing! EXTREMELY helpful staff

Ratings_icons Not so great!

marykins

I was a long-time customer of Moodswings. They used to take amazing care of their clients and it was a great atmosphere with qualified stylists, astheticians, etc. IN the last year or so I have had nothing but NEGATIVE experiences! My stylist left, so did my asthetician - the people they replaced them with were AWFUL, amateur, and obviously did not have the level of experience I would associate with a salon of the quality Moodswings claims to be. Their prices have also skyrocketed and their level of professionalism as a whole lowered. I would not give them your business if you are expecting top of the line service and experience.

Pros: Location & Array of Aveda Products

Cons: Unprofessional, constantly changing staff, disorganized

Ratings_icons What a MESS!!!

Well I have been a client of this salon for about a year now and I have yet to have the same stylist cut my hair. It seems like they can't keep good staff. I find someone who does a good job and that I would like to see again and then recieve a call that they are no longer with moodswings and that I have been put with someone else for my next cut. I hate this!!! I finally feel like I have found someone good and they are gone. I have now tried yet another stylist and I HATED my hair this time! UGH!!! There is NO consistancy! Its not worth going back anymore because I never know who I am going to get or if my hair will be good or HORRIBLE!!!!!! Don't even waist your time finding parking and paying the high prices here. You would be much better off at any other salon!!!!!!!!

I have been going here for years and in the last 6 months it has gone down hill, I gave them a chance to come back around, but they didn't don't know what is going on, but I have a terrible haircut, eyebrows, bad massages, nails, it all has been awful lately now I have the worst cut I have ever had and I am in tears and they can't even fix it right they tried. I didn't even get an apology. They are overpriced for what you get now. Go somewhere else, I do not recommend this place anymore.

Ratings_icons Make sure that the owner isn't next in line.

atzima

The receptionists were very friendly and my appointment was on-time. I went downstairs and got waxed they did an awesome job. Next I went up and got a manicure. I believe I waited about 5 mins between the two. The manicure was awesome too. Next I went to have my hair curled. During the hair curling I asked the stylist if the owner worked in the salon she said that he was an accountant and that she was supposed to be doing his hair next. She rushed through my hair and sadly my curls all fell out before the party that I was going to that night even started. I understand why this happened and next time hopefully the stylist won't be in such a rush. Next I had my make-up done and they did a fantastic job.
My overall experience was great and I would recommend they to any of my friends.

Ratings_icons GREAT Salon!!

azsunshine88

I recently went to Mood Swings for a hair coloring for the first time. It was the best salon I have ever been to. The front desk staff was helpful with where to park, they offered me a drink, and told me to sit and relax while I waited. My stylist was very good at listening to what I wanted and gave me helpful ideas on how to keep up on my style at home. I got a great chocolate color and left feeling stress free. I even got my makeup done before I went out the door. The salon has a very open feel and everyone seemed to get along. Another stylist even commented on how nice my coloring job was. I highly recommend Mood Swings to everyone who wants the best!

Pros: Best Salon

Cons: I can't even think of any!

I wanted highlights that were not brassy and a "Lisa Rinna" style cut. I left with hair that is dry and brittle, looks overly processed and a style that looks nothing like the picture I brought in. My hair color looks like something that I might have done myself. It is really disappointing. I won't return.

Ratings_icons Bad Color Experience - Left the Same Shade & $150 Poorer

misstanyataylor

Being it my first visit to Arizona, I used the "Best of City Search" as my guide to the city's "best" salons and spas. I was very happy with the spa that I chose, but not so much with the salon, "Mood Swings." I forgot the name of my stylist, but she was artsy in appearance - thick glasses, brown hair, with an ecclectic look. The biggest mistake that is made in a salon is the miscommunication between the customer and the stylist on the outcome of your experience. To prevent this, I brought a picture with me. I wanted to change my current buttery blonde hair to a medium to darker brown with icy blonde highlights. I had a picture illustrating what I wanted. Somehow, when I left the salon, I was still arguably a blonde. Under normal circumstances, I would have argued to have it fixed. However, my vacation clock was ticking, as I am employed overseas. My boyfriend had waited patiently for over 2 hours for me to go from the drammatic change of blone to dirty blonde, so correcting the mistake was not worth my time. Neither was the salon. She asked me was I happy, and with all respect, I calmy told her that this was not the look that I showed her. She explained that it was because the girl in the photo had a different haircut. REGARDLESS, a haircut does not transform your hair color. I wanted medium to dark brown hair, and I was arguably one darker shade of blonde. You have to be really horrible at your job to screw something like this up. My hair, which was really healthy pre-salon visit was unusually dry afterwards too. The other stylists might be wonderful, but this one was not. The salon should more thouroughly evealuate who it hires, or risk ruining their reputation through one bad egg.

Ratings_icons Awesome April!

eckertfulton

Having never been to this salon before, I had no clue how to choose which stylist I wanted to schdule an appointment with when the girl asked (?) I took a gamble and said, " whichever one would be avail for my scheduled time." So, . . .April it was.
A couple days later when I arrived for my appointment I had the pleasure of meeting April. She was fairly friendly (not overly so) but I swear I got the best haircut I've ever had! I should also add it was more than a fair price- $40. I might be the only female in the world that really hates visits to the salon. ( i really don't like to sit still that long and often describe it as torture) But for the first time, it was worth the result of how I looked when I walked out that day.
Jumped online in need of finding Mood Swings phone number so I could attempt to make another hair appointment. Being a little after 7pm on a Wen eve I was thinking there was no way I'd, A) succeed in booking an appointment for the next morning or B) so much as even hear a live voice on the other end of the line called so late in the eve (w my fingers crossed) But to my surprise I got both! We'll see if the second time around proves to be as good as the first---
For whatever reason I feel the need to add that I am not one to write a "review" (re: any service or encounter in the past) and would consider it a waste of time. This girl earned it.

Ratings_icons Great Customer Service, but Horrible Manis

veggielovr676

I've been to Mood Swings several times, and i'm always a satisfied customer... except for the last visit. They have wonderful customer service, i always feel comfortable in the salon, and every haircut/waxing is perfect. The Manicure was not. I saw cecelia, and i was extremely dissappointed. She was not very personable... her personality just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the salon AT ALL. And by the time i had gone about the rest of my day, grocery shopping and what-not, my nail polish was already chipping! And for a manicure i expect my nails to look like i've just gotten a manicure... they actually look worse than before i went in!

I recommend Mood Swings to everyone i know... but not for nail services. I say, you get a better job at the nail salon inside Wal-Mart. And for much less money!!!

Pros: Customer Service, Ambiance, Great haircuts

Cons: Parking, Manicurist

MY EXPERIENCE WAS HORRIBLE!!!! FIRAST OF ALL THE RECEPTIONISTS COMPLETELY MESSED UP MY APPOINTMENT AND WEREN"T INVITING AT ALL. AFTER 25 MINUTES OF WAITING I WAS FINALLY IN MY STYLISTS CHAIR. SHE WAS NICE AND HELPED ME DECIDE ON THE PERFECT HAIRSTYLE. THEN A REDHEADED GIRL WHO I THINK MUST HAVE BEEN THE MANAGER CAME DOWNSTAIRS AND STARTED YELLING AT MY STYLIST WHILE I WAS IN THE CHAIR, IT MADE ME FEEL VERY AKWARD AND UNCOMFORTABLE. WHEN THE REDHEADED SHE DEVIL FINALLY LEFT MY STYLIST WAS SO EMBARASSED SHE HARDLY SPOKE THE REST OF THE SERVICE! I loved my experience at Mood Swings Salon! The front desk people were attentive, talkative, and friendly, and offered me soda, water, coffee, or Aveda tea (delicious!). I loved my cut and color as well, and my stylist was adorable and easy to talk to. She listened to me, and after we talked, she came up with a great color for me that I hadn't even thought of! I can't wait to go back! As far as pricing goes, I don't think it's unreasonable at all, especially when my hair turned out so amazing!

I've been searching for someone who can deliver natural chic polished blonde. Not the chunky over processed blonde you see to often. Janessa has exceded my expections. Not only did she give me FLAWLESS color, she consulted with me for probably 15 minutes before we started. It's obvious she cares, and is knowledgable. She also gave me seriously the best blowout ever. The salon is on mill so the parking is a less then convient, but the front desk girl offered valadation. Once inside its got a great vibe, except for the loud music. I'm one happy blonde.

I saw Jessica yesterday afternoon for a haircut and it went well. Jessica was very quiet and didn't seem to like talking so if you are a talker when you get your hair cut you might want to pick a different stylist. I brought with me some ideas of what I wanted to do with my hair but Jessica seemed a little reluctant to offer me her opinion. What I got didn't turn out quite the way I expected but I think I might like it anyway. I don't like how she styled it (too straight - no volume), but I can tell that it is a quality cut and I think that after I get done styling it my way it will look good. I'm not a very tactile person so the scalp and hand massage didn't do much for me but if you like that kind of thing it's a nice touch. I really liked the guy who worked at the desk. He was very friendly and talked with me for a bit about the book I was reading. The layout of the place seems kind of random and odd at first but as I was there longer, I realized that it brings a certain privacy to the place. The chairs are fairly far apart so your stylist can't spend all his/her time talking to the person next you (which has happened to me at other salons). The music seemed a bit loud to me, but once again it contributed to your privacy as you couldn't hear what was going on at the other chairs. I paid $55 for my cut which I believe is pretty average for the area. I wasn't pressured to buy any products at all. She just asked me if I had any questions about them. All in all, I think it was a good experience and I might go back but I think I'll try a different stylist.

Pros: professional cut, privacy

Cons: stylist was not personable

The salon is very trendy - it looks like a loft in New York. Suzanne was my stylist & she was wonderful! I felt like a good friend was doing my hair instead of someone that I had just met. She listened to what I wanted done & then repeated it to me to make sure we were on the same page. She gave me exactly the hair cut that I wanted - no surprises! They give you a head/neck massage before washing your hair. Then, while the conditioner sits in your hair, they give you an arm & hand massage. So nice! Even though I live on the west side of Phoenix & it's a bit of a drive, I will go back to Suzanne for sure! The only downer is that I discovered that I am allergic to Aveda products so when I go back, I guess I'll have to take my one shampoo! Oh well, it was worth it! Oh, and first time customers only pay $40 for their haircut!

Pros: Everything was great!

I just went to Mood Swings for the first time because I read the good reviews on citysearch. The salon is very open and had a good welcoming when you go in. I got a hair cut and a coloring done by the hairdresser Amy. You get a beverage, hand massage, and can read good magazines. I got the perfect color and she curled my hair because I was going out to dinner. I love this place!

Ratings_icons Nothing but great experiences so far

I just moved to Tempe about a month ago and needed to find a salon that "does it all." Mood Swings was recommended to me by a stylist at my former salon, which is a pretty upscale Aveda salon in another city. First, I called in for a leg wax and they were able to book me with Vanessa on pretty short notice. She was a sweetheart, and she did a fantastic job on my legs. I asked her for recommendations for a stylist who was good with wavy hair, and she gave me the names of 3 or 4 who she thought would be good for me. I booked an appointment for the following week with Steven. I was about a month overdue for a trim, and Steven did a great job trimming and shaping my hair. He's a very personable and funny man, and I loved being in his chair! I booked another appointment for next week with him for a color touch-up. The layout of this place is great, too -- very open and airy and not overcrowded. (I've been to a few places that seem to try to cram as many stylists into the space as possible). Also, I've read a few reviews on here about the "high" prices. Honestly, I thought the prices around this area would be quite a bit higher than they actually are. So, for the level of service and talent I received, I was fine with their prices. The main drawback for me, which doesn't really have to do with salon service itself, is the parking down on Mill. The first time I went, I managed to snag a meter right outside the salon. (Be aware, if you get a meter, the max time is 80 minutes -- good for waxing services, but may not be enough time for hair services or facials). The next time I went, there was a LOT of construction, so the closest parking lot was inaccessible and I had to park a few blocks away. The salon will validate parking for two hours at any of the "Park It" lots that are scattered around the Mill Ave. district, though, so once the construction is cleared, parking shouldn't be a huge issue. All in all, nothing but great service so far!

Pros: Friendly, attentive and professional service, salon layout

Cons: Parking

I LOVED THIS PLACE!! I couldn't believe how nice everyone was, especially for a high-end salon. The desk staff were sweet and honestly seemed to care that I was there, offered me tea and a hand massage while I waited! My stylist was professional but fun-- she went into detail about what she was going to do with my hair, and helped me to decide what I really wanted. All the employees there seemed like they were having fun, like they loved their job, but remained on task (taking care of ME!). I don't like to talk much while I'm getting my hair done, and my stylist seemed to catch on to that and let me be. She was a darling gal from Nebraska-- I think her name was Jessica? The prices were really reasonable for the level of service and follow up that I received-- I'm from the DC area, and any woman in her right mind who takes good care of herself knows that you can't get this high quality Aveda treatment and not pay a lot. (Lets face it, if you want a $14 haircut, go to Supercuts, and get what you pay for!) When my hair service was finished, my stylist (tactfully) recommended a brow wax and tint to match my luscious new color, and the aesthetician got me right in! When I got back to DC, my girlfriends were jealous of the hot new cut and color and the fact that I paid so much less than I usually do! HA!

Keep up the good work, Mood Swingers..... You definitely sent my mood on an upward turn! BTW: Ever think of an East Coast franchise? :)

Pros: Great staff, awesome communication, Aveda!

Cons: Parking... but it IS downtown!!

Ratings_icons Perfection!

av2203

It took me over 6 months of living in Phoenix to find a place to get my hair styled, and thank goodness I found Mood Swings. Chere gave me the most perfect cut, and the highlights she did are beautiful. I get more compliments on my hair now than I ever have. And because this salon uses only Aveda products, my hair always feels healthier when I leave than it does when I came in--even after it's been colored.

Pros: Nearly everything.

Cons: Parking. A little bit expensive.

Ratings_icons Extremely Overpriced

How did these people get so high up on the "best of" list? They are extremely overpriced for mediocre service.

Ratings_icons I love my Hair!

I am very pickey about my blonde highlights. They always have ended up too brassy or chuncky. I called Moodswings and they reccomened I see Amy. She was very professional, friendly and full of suggestions. Amy had so many styling tips and even reccomened a shampoo to help with my brassy blondes. I love my hair and can't wait to go back!

Ratings_icons Very professional

I was having a hard time finding someone who knew how to cut and style my problem hair when I came across Mood Swings and found Suzanne! I haven't had anyone else at Mood Swings cut or style my hair because she is so awesome! I have had the chance to meet other staff and have observed them working with other clients, and have found them to be extremely professional, friendly, and helpful.
For the area and for the salon itself, I think that their rates are totally reasonable.
I definitely recommend Mood Swings to anyone looking for a professional stylist in a professional setting.

Pros: Staff, very clean, nice selection of product, well laid-out

Cons: Parking in the area for all businesses there is a bummer
