The recent comments are illuminating. We thought they had sold the store to a chain and expected a name change to be imminent. The good reviews are old and sadly they don't reflect the current situation. For example, just casually inquiring where some of the usual staff were created a feeling that made us squirm. It was not a "welcome to the store" feeling. Whatever occurred to make the long time staffers disappear, it's creating discomfort all around.

One person who seems to be managing the store is sadly not suited to interacting with people on that level. That's a terrible position to put a new manager in (!) let alone the clerks and customers! Talk about setting someone up to fail. How sad that they did this to themselves and to their 'community.'

Changing Hands truly doesn't exist anymore. It's a terrible loss to all involved. The owners don't understand the wonderful impact their business had on this area for decades. If they did, how could they take such a risk? Lets hope they come to their senses before it's too late to recover.

I don't want the store that is part of my history here (and thousands of others who called it their second home) to fail. But it looks like another bridge that's going to have to come crashing down. Changing Hands has always been unique, visionary and real, a haven of authenticity. It has 30 some years of very loyal customers who knew the whole staff and loved them.

We're a big city but the store carved a niche in the community that filled a void, and created happiness, and made them succeed! We were 'family.' The store was built on that loyalty. On the day the towers went down in 2001 where did we go? There, to mingle, to sit and stare, just to be with real people, our friends there, safe inside sanity and goodness. Now that's gone. They've robbed us (and themselves!) of the place that our community helped them create by supporting them without fail.

The new staff is ill equipped and uncomfortable, and seem to know little about what they are selling. Young clerks punctuate their vocabulary with phrases such as "it's like...awesome!!" and yak between themselves about their personal lives. They are fish out of water. They are consumed with not 'breaking the rules." Where is this coming from? Long time customers are treated like strangers. Well, they are. And the buzz in the community is not good.

Don't the owners care if they lose the bulk of 30 years worth of loyal patrons? Why do they want to start over building a 'new, young' customer base. Young people are some of the most fickle shoppers in the world. The credibility that the store earned over the years is fast disappearing. I don't know what happened, just suddenly no one familiar is there anymore. Incredibly sad for all concerned. I hope they don't fail, but all signs point to a downslide that is not going to be easily rectified.

While giving lip service to helping their community, the owners, Gayle Shanks and Bob Sommers have done a grave injustice to many of their own staff. Employees are not paid overtime or holiday pay. Employees don't receive medical benefits or a fair wage. Although the big chain bookstores are vilified for not being locally owned, they provide medical benefits for their staff as well as paying their employees for overtime and holiday hours. Changing Hands has also recently come under fire for their poor treatment of former owner, Susie Brazil who put in 20 + years with the company, even putting her name on loans and offering her own property as collateral for the store in the years when they were struggling to stay afloat.

I do like the selection in this bookstore, but the lack of sitting and browsing areas is a minus. No matter where I pause to look, I'm in someone's way! Maybe you're supposed to buy them first and go next door? Having visiting guest-speakers (writers, artists, politicians, etc) is pretty neat, too.

Changing Hands was always my favorite place in college. Right down the street from ASU it is conveniently located and easy to get to. It is easy to get lost in the gret selection of books and spend hours browsing and reading. The great thing is they will let you do it! They don't hustle you in and out and the staff there are amazing. It's definately a great value!

Changing Hands moved to their present location a few years back and turned a strip mall space into a tranquil, charming shop with unique treasures tucked into all sorts of little nooks and crannies.

This bookstore is great. They have new and used books for great prices. They buy and trade your used books as well. They have a good selection and they even have a children's books section. The staff is very friendly and they are always willing to help. They are getting more items in daily so I check back there frequently and they always have something I want.

Changing Hands Bookstore offers great books at great prices. Some of their selections are pricey though. They've got hard to find books that you can't find in those large retail bookstores. My daughter loves this place and whenever we go here, she gets home with something to read. Staff are friendly and would assist you as soon you get in.

This is an excellent book store to find titles that are sometimes not easy to find other places. I always seem to have good luck finding exactly what I am looking for and not to mention much more in here. To top it all off the prices are really low and very affordable. It is extremely easy to find particular books about particular subjects in here. If you can't find something just ask they are great at helping their customers.

This is a true hidden treasure in Tempe. You would never know what a great bookstore it is from looking at the outside. They get some of the best book signing in the state. They had a great day of fun for the kids when Harry Potter was released. It is nice to see them doing things like that and story time for kids in the age of the video game. My kids and I can go in and wander around then pick a book up and take home and read together. They are a little pricer than the bigger chain stores but you will never know what you could find changing hands bookstore.

Changing Hands is full of all kinds of new and used books. You can bring books in for trade too. They have book signings and other special events quite often, and even offer writing workshops through some authors. This is a nice place to pick up a gift for someone or to find something new and different for yourself.

New or Used, the books are all in great condition. The clerks know their stuff. The store is clean and bright and welcoming. Lots of spiritual and odd-hiipy-like things to browse through.

Sometimes I want to read a book but dont want to pay a fortune for it. Luckly I came across this book store because they sell both new and used books. Their used books are priced very fairly. I enjoy shopping here, and will continue to for all of my needs. They are in a great location in Tempe, that is easy to get to. The employees of this book store are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

Changing hands bookstore recently moved to south Tempe but it still retains it's reputation as the best in town. Independently run, Changing Hands often times will bring quality guest readers and professionals to interact with the community that the larger corporate stores would not. I recently attended a function where guest speaker Amy Goodwin of Pacifica's Democracy Now spoke about many subjects including the rights and ethics of journalist and the news media at large. Community leaders valley-wide showed up to put their two cents in. The event that Changing Hands coordinated was a complete success.

Changing Hands Bookstore is a unique second hand bookstore. They do carry some new items, but it is mostly gently used items. The store is very clean, and well laid out. They have a nice children's section, with a large assortment of books to browse through!

I love this book store , though it does tend to lean a bit towards the new age, self-help type of crowd. They have tons of book signings with name authors.

I like this store because you can buy used books or new books here. So naturally you dont pay as much for the used ones, so this store saves me a lot of money. They have a good selection. This is a gret little store.

This place is great - very laid back atmosphere. Lots of choices new and used. Better system than Bookman's. They can usually tell you if they have the book on the shelf and can usually find it quickly. The clerks are usually friendly and theres a cafe next door with excellent teas and sweets.
