This place has gone downhill in the past few years. The glowing 2009 recommendations here do not reflect Makutu's Island today. I was there for a party and they have significantly cut back on their spending. The place is rundown and needs a major cleaning and maintenance. It is understaffed and even the Makutu that shows up in character to dance has holes in his costume. Pretty sad. Birthday parties used to be more upscale, but now you get clear plastic goodie bags, cheap styrofoam drink cups. All the games are broken and coverd with duct tape. It's pretty obvious management has made major cutbacks and is probably getting rich in the process.

My sister and I both brought our children to Makutu's Island for a day of fun. Right when we walked in our mouths dropped in aw. WOW this place is super cool! Everything and more you would have ever dreamed for as a kid. Prices were fair and when I was told I was aloud to climb up and play too I became even more excited to get in! And the best part was security! There was only one exit and all fire exits were alarmed. They also put wristbands on us with our last name and how many adults and kids where in our group. When you leave the check the wristbands to make sure the right kid goes home with the right adult. SIMPLY AMAZING! Once inside, there were employees in all the tree houses helping kids and playing with them! I felt very safe for my kids. The slides were wicked awesome! Makutu (a purple panther) even came out and threw tee shirts to the kids and danced the cha cha slide! The kids loved him! We then ate at the cafe and the pizza was soooo good and came out very quickly. The only down side was getting the kids home! They threw a huge fuss because they didn't want to leave! Makutu's is great! I suggest it to anyone with kids between 3-10!

We are from Idaho and went down to AZ to visit. Took my children to Makutu's Island and they had a GREAT time. The only draw back was the place was run by teeny boppers who don't know anything and don't tell you anything and the cafe. The service was HORRIBLE!!! We ordered a couple of salads, a hot dog and a grilled cheese. Now mind you they were not busy. It took 30 minutes to get some of our food and that was after I went up to the counter 3 times. Now we got our salads but still no hot dog or grilled cheese. Well I went back up there and there had been a hot dog sitting in the window the whole time. About 3 minutes later they came out with a cold hot dog on a stale bun (the one that was in the window) and a grilled cheese than consisted of 2 pieces of toast and 4 small slices of cheese lumped in one spot..not melted. To say the least, I was pissed! At 5 bucks a sandwich it should have been done right! So I went back up there and the guy working behind the counter proceeded to ignore me...that really made me mad!! Finally I just blurted out that I wanted to talk to the Manager NOW! She got things fixed. I would not recommend the cafe at all!!! Eat before you go.

We love Makutu's. My granddaughter has asked to go there for 3 birthdays now. It depends on the age of the child. You can have a great time if you are above 6 years. It is great exercise. The food could be improved as well as the toddler section and I wouldn't mind if they took the video games out completely. Just my opinion

I don't get the negative reviews. We went to Makutu's on July 22nd and was a little worried when I pulled into the parking lot because it was so full. Plus quite a few day care vans. My fears vanished once inside and I saw how this place absorbs the masses, it didn't feel crowded at all. My kids got in free because I signed them up for the kids club(free) on their website. Plus they gave them free socks and shirt in addition to the free admission. Place felt very clean and everyone I came across spoke English and had a good attitude. This place is HUGE, I went with my kids up into the struture and could never tell where I was. We stayed for 3 hours and my 3 year old started crying when it was time to leave. Perfect place to spend a hot day. We will be back!

We live out of state, and often visit family here in Phoenix. I took my 3 yr old here last time, and just couldn't wait to bring him back. For a toddler, the parent must play too...they have a hard time maneuvering through, but what a great way to play with them!! Because parents of older children do not supervise, it is important to protect your child, sure wish more parents played instead of holding the seat down! Eat before going, it cost's a fortune to eat there. All in all, I really wish we had one of these in NM and this will be a place we come every time we come to visit!

Looking online, I thought this would be a fun place for kids. My kids had some fun. Lots of the older kids there made the experience worse for them. Two of my daughters were pushed, punched and kicked. Not fun.

The non-english speaking people were quite frustrating when ordering the food. If you go here, plan to eat somewhere else first. 3 cheeseburgers, 3 fries, nuggets and 5 drinks - $45. Add that to the entrance fee we paid and it came out to well over $70.

In comparison, I recommend Chuck E Cheese's over this place. For the cost, you get more fun for the kids, way better food, and a sense of satisfaction when you leave.

Basically, avoid this place if you can. A regular playground, picnic food and drinks in a cooler will provide a much better experience for the family.

We scheduled my son's 4th birthday party here shortly after learning of it's existence. The party packages are reasonable and include a lot. We live in Anthem, so we were a bit afraid when asking our son's friends and their families to drive to Chandler for his party even though we hadn't been there before. Once we walked in the door, our fears were left behind. The staff greeted us, was extremely organized and I could hardly believe how much trouble they went through to make his party run so smoothly. Once we checked in and got our party wristbands (color coded-our group had blue), they opened the door to their GIGANTIC play area. All I can say is it is even more impressive in person. Wow. The kids had a blast, and even the adults did (the play structures are designed for adults, too). While tracking down my little birthday boy in the play area for photo ops, I got to the top of the giant tree and saw he had already made it down. To avoid climbing the small ladders all the way back down, I opted to take the slide - the tallest, fastest slide I've ever been on. I shot out of that thing faster than a speeding bullet onto a pile of cushy mats, much to the surprise of the children at the bottom who weren't expecting a full grown adult to burst out of there with eyes as wide as saucers. I LOVED IT! After 1 hour of play time and working up our appetites, our Makutu's party host gathered the kiddos from the play area by announcing Happy Birthday to our son over the P.A. system and calling for all the blue wristband party guests to gather. Once we were all there, she had the kids twirl around while we walked back to a very nice, completely set up party room. Once the children were settled in, the host had all of the adults sit in chairs surrounding the children's party table. She showed us the our food table, explained the contents of the beverage pitchers and kinds of pizza, and said to ask if we need any refills. Here's where it gets really good and worth every penny: She said all we needed to do was eat, relax, and watch the party as she would be running the show for the kids. And she did marvelously. While the kids ate pizza, she cleaned up and prepared the cake. Once the cake was served, she had the kids who were finished begin signing a giant birthday card. Once cake was cleaned up, she sat with our son while he opened presents, and filled out the gifts received list. All of the parents were marveling with my husband and I the entire time. Overall our son felt really special there and didn't want to leave - until he saw the goody bags they passed out to us at the exit! Everyone that went has been raving about their good time and want to make Makutu's Island a regular family outing. That slide is beckoning me for another ride...

A couple friends and I decided to meet at Makutus for the day with our preschool and under aged children. Upon arriving, the greater was not very nice, and didn't speak English very well, or explain the options for entrance at all. I never would have known there was a lunch special, which allows you admittance and lunch for 2 people for just 4 dollars more than the regular entrance fee. The lunch special, includes 4 tokens, which we were not given, and when we asked about it, the greeter/cashier said, "i didnt know" and turned and walked away.
We played for a while, then decided to have lunch. The lady in the cafe didn't speak English either, and for the 3 of us adults to place our orders( we each had one child and one adult meal) took about 20 minutes. Then we had to ASK to get our complete order. It was very frustrating. When a friend asked if it was always like this, to the manager, he said yes... Since he admitted it is always disorganized, with non-english speaking customer service workers, i have decided I will never go back. Not to mention, in the lobby, of this childrens entertainment center they were playing Brittney Spears music, " slave". not very appropriate for young children, or any children for that matter. We decided next time it will be Mcdonalds or Amazing Jakes for a day of fun with our children!

The party girls are somewhat rude. O.K. to the kids, but noticeably disrespectful to other employees. Overall experience was O.K but the party girls need to be aware that their behavior is a reflection of the company as a whole.

We've been to Makutu's a few times. The first time my son was only 17 months old and there wasn't much for him to do unless we went with him. Even then, there are a LOT of older kids and it gets very crowded so the little ones get run over. There is a toddler play area but it isn't very big. As my kids have gotten older it has become much more fun. They are 2 & 4 and love to run and play together. Weekdays are less crowded and a little safer for the little ones so they don't get knocked over. The employees are tons of fun too! Last time the guy supervising the toddler area was building huge block towers for the kids to knock over. They had a blast!

We went to Makutus Island a few weekends ago and had a fun time. Right when you walk in, there is a huge "tree" in the middle with tubular slides and tunnels. The main tree is surrounded by a lot of other play areas that all connect to the main tree by suspended netted tunnels, etc. Since my daughter is younger, my husband and I went with her through this 'maze' of tunnels, stairs, bridges, etc.

The toddler's section is pretty small and could use some improvement. There are three small slides and then a small room with large soft blocks and tunnel. I think they could have done a little more in this area, but my daughter still had fun. Also, they need someone to keep an eye on this section to ensure some of the older kids aren't playing rough in there.

It was amazing to walk into this place. The playground area is huge! You won't believe how high they can climb! Of course first you have to pay, and it's not cheap. The thing I don't like is that parents have to pay regardless of whether they play or not. If you sign up for their kids club you can get your kid in for free once, and then again for their birthday and a free t-shirt. Parties there are very expensive. The kids will love to climb, but it is VERY hard to keep track of where they are and they can seem lost in the rainforest at times. There are a few arcade games and a snack area. It's an interesting place to take your kids. Bring a book to read though, once they get up in that tree you won't see much of them. Parking was fine and the location is easy to find.

PROS: very cool playground, like nothing I've ever seen
CONS: expensive and boring for parents

This was a fun time for the kids. The food was just okay but you are not going there for the food, you are going for the fun. It was really tiring though. The parents are allowed to go on some of the tunnels and boy was I tired when we left. It makes a nice place to have a birthday party your kid will never forget.

Makutu's Island is like a giant human habitrail. There are tubes, slides and cargo nets everywhere for kids to climb on. Children smaller than 3 have a special area that is very small and not too entertaining. If you are not comfortable letting your child explore the tubes and nets on their own, be prepared for the worst... for most adults it is claustrophobic and smells strongly of little sweaty feet.
