Ratings_icons Magic Lamp Inn is SCARY!!!

larry w.

Ok. This is going to sound weird, but i swear its true! I went to Magic lamp for the first time last week and sat in the bar area. There were 2 "women" who my friends and i were convinced were actually men. They flirted and danced with the old weird guys there and eventually went home with the unlucky winners (one of which had a bad hair piece)... So we decided to try the place again last night. Same 2 "women" running the same game on 2 old guys with money. Then i went to check out the closed of dining room and A HUGE MAN IN A DRESS AND WIG bolted out of a dark corner booth. I obvously interrupted something... This place is 100% for weird, old guys with money looking for lady-men... Dont believe me? Go next Tuesday for karaoke and check it out for yourself.

I have been to the Magic Lamp many times over the years. But this past Valentines Day was my last and I will never go there again. This is clearly a regulars only place, as people that only eat there once a month are clearly not welcome! A Filet Mignon is $42.00 A LA CARTE! Give me a break! That is by far the most expensive filet in any restaurant, period! The Magic Lamp Inn is not even close to Flemings or Ruth Chriss when it comes to quality of food, quality of service, value, quality of atmosphere and especially quality of seating. Do not be foolish and spend your money at the Magic Lamp Inn for a mediocre meal with terrible service! Remember Magic Lamp Inn, service starts at the front door, and you consistently blew it ! You regulars can have this place, you are all fools and deserve it!

Ratings_icons Bad service during banquet

"I was at the Magic Lamp last night with a large group, I have been there several other times. I don't know where you are getting your food servers from (maybe McDonalds) but my friends and I agreed that the service is not the same. We were trying to figure out who was in charge. We asked if we could get coffee, because we had been drinking wine, which was provided for us. The little girl server said "of course" well, after the 3rd time of asking, a waiter finally brought us some. Our table also did not have enough rolls for everyone and when I asked for more, the waitress gave me an attitude. How professional is that...I will say that once we finally got our food it was good. My friends and I though that the servers were very un- organized, granted there were a lot of us. I must say that we expected much better service since we spent so much money!!!! Magic Lamp "shape up or you will lose a lot of customers...

Ratings_icons Pleasant Experience

My wife and I recently were in the Pasadena area visiting a friend, and she recommended that we go to Magic Lamp Inn for dinner. The ambiance was magnificent and the service was fantastic, outstanding wine list not to mention the food was delicious which means we left the restaurant feeling totally satisfied. We would very much recommend this restaurant to those visiting the area.

Will not be returning! We have dinned here before. Felt ripped off as we walked out the door for the last time. Food was very ho-hum service was stuffy borderline rude. I did like the atmosphere, but too bad the food, service and management is so bad. I can't believe when we drive by there are cars in the parking lot. There are far better places out there to spend your money.

Ratings_icons It's Been Around Since 1955 For A Reason

Well, I have been going to the Magic Lamp Inn my entire life and have NEVER had a bad meal there. My husband proposed to me there, we had our wedding reception there last year (which was RAVED about for weeks afterward by our guests) and I've celebrated anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and holidays there countless times. The food is always excellent and prepared well and I've never experienced poor service there. And Micky, the Special Events Coordinator, is truly a nice person; she may come off as having an "attitude" but the truth is, she's the type of person who gets things DONE. She doesn't take any crap from anyone on her staff and that operation she had going there is a well-oiled machine. She has planned 3 events for my family and I and we have been happy with her service each and every time. I don't believe that a lot of people are being fair with this restaurant. Yes, it IS dark in there because that is the DECOR, and yes, you are not allowed to credit wedding reception dinners to your account for other expenses. It's called READ THE CONTRACT- it is clearly stated in the contract for events that if you have guests that do not show up who've previously RSVP'd, you cannot credit the bill. Also, if you had paid attention to what Micky said about wedding receptions- how there will be an average of 10% who will not show up even after they have RSVP'd- then you wouldn't have been surprised with all of the leftover dinners at the end of the night. And so what if you give them to the staff? Those are the people who are working to make your reception a wonderful event; giving them a meal that would otherwise be wasted is a bad thing? The people you SHOULD be mad at are the inconsiderate guests who neglected to show up after saying that they would be there. I had 14 dinners at the end of my reception and several of my guests were ecstatic to get an extra meal to take home and enjoy, especially since the meal was so damn good! If you people were smarter, then you would not only be able to spell and use grammar properly when reviewing a restaurant, you would also be able to know a good restaurant when it smacks you in the face instead of picking stupid things apart. AND, if you people were unsatisfied with your meals or whatever, all you had to do was approach the manager or tell your server, POLITELY and CORDIALLY, that you weren't satisfied. The staff is always willing to correct any mistakes as long as you treat them with respect- I have a feeling a lot of you people aren't respectful restaurant patrons and that is just sad.

I was there a couple of weeks ago for a Retirement Party for an employee that had 25 years with our company. Mickie was a great help to me and everything went off great. The service and food was great. We highly recommend the Magic Lamp for any special occasion.

Ratings_icons The Food is worse than denny's yuk yuk yuk

tory s.

My experience was terrible. The place is to dark they have it dark in there so you won't see the nats that fly in the food. I had a dead fly in my salad. The steak was loaded with fat. They should call it a fat steak special that was the worst steak dinner I ever had. The potatoes were cold. I requested to have there best merlot wine to go with my dinner and they brought me this wine that tasted like nyquil syrup. I would of been better off buying 2 buck chuck from trader joe's for $2 then drinking that awlful wine that they suggested. My mother who is 70 years old was so flabbergasted by the whole experience she told me I told you we should of went to denny's for my birthday. Her dinner was also loaded with fat with no meat and luckily for her she didn't get a fly in her food. I'm considering calling the health department on them. I paid the bill and we took off. All I can say is yuk horrible food and horrible service. Don't be fooled we were fooled,

Ratings_icons I'm scared of the magic lamp inn there steak got me sick to my stomach!

Sandy p.

Looks are desceiving. Way to overpriced the steak was undercooked when I asked for well done. The potatoes were cold and there soda tasted like it was flat. I went home and I threw up all night. In the morning I went to the doctors and the doctor told me I had food poisening. That was all I ate that day. There lucky I didn't sue them and take them and that rude manager to court. Please do not let this happen to you. Run for the hills if you see this place and don't look back. The manager is horribly rude, and the busboys are nice. Save your money and don't waste your time on this dive!

Ratings_icons I should of went to norm's restrauant instead of the magic lamp inn

bob l.

Nice atmosphere very dark romantic settings. There was hardly no meat on my steak 80% of it was fat. the potatoes were cold. I waited 1 hour for my dinner. My wife's salad dressing tasted expired. After waiting 45 minutes to speak to the manager she was very rude. older women about in her early 70's who wears glasses and a little on the heafty side. couldn't remember her name but I asked to get another steak and showed her all the fat on it. she would not replace it for a new steak and she told me there is nothing she can do for me and my wife. I will never go back to magic lamp inn restraunt she is rude and the food is low budget in my eyes. norms is ten times better. i'm not a norms fan but i'd rather eat there steak then to eat at the magic lamp inn. The owner needs to fire that manager.

Ratings_icons Servers were great but manager was rude

Anonymous

I had my reception at the magic lamp and the waiters and servers were great!!! Even the security guard was very helpful with making sure nobody would take out birdcage full of moneycards etc.. However, the manager Mickey was very rude. She pulled my sister aside and said, "Heres the bill what are you going to do about it". VERY RUDE!!! My guest were having such a great time i asked if we could stay an extra hour if we paid and she wouldnt even budge and this was my reception. Aslo what really got me upset was i had paid for a certain number of guest to have dinner with us but when they didnt show i asked if that money can be used toward something else like wine etc. She was soo rude and said NO and i was going to be stuck with extra dinners to take home. So what i did was fed every waiter, bartender, and server dinner. She really treated them like dogs, no respect.
The Magic lamp is great to go have dinner BUT not for a reception. MIckey was very unprofesional.

Ratings_icons Reception Parties At The Magic Lamp Inn

wendy w.

Two weeks ago I decided to make a appointment with the manager who handles all the reception engagements. Her name is Mickie. Me and my mother drove to the magic lamp inn. very nice atmosphere. the manager mickie she was extremely rude. she had an attitude the minute we walked in. she showed us the wine cellar where they have there parties. me and my daughter looked around trying to figure if our family will fit in a small room. Mickie tells my daughter you need to hurry and make up your mind. do you want to book it or not. the manager told her she's in a hurry. we were only there for 10 minutes. my daughter told her it's way to small which it is. my daughter told mickie thank you for taking the time to see us. Mickie gave my daughter a angry look. we were planning on spending $20,000 on the magic lamp inn but because of mickie the manager we will go elsewhere. The magic lamp inn is to classy for them to be hiring a rude manager. she needs to be a manager at mc donald's or the 99 cent store that's about how much she is worth as a manager to the restaurant industry!

The Magic Lamp Inn Looks very nice and classy inside and there menu sounds wonderful! Boy was I wrong Looks are deceiving! My son was planning on having his reception at the magic lamp inn. Before we decided on putting a big deposit! My son his fiance and the inlaws decided to dine at the inn. Big mistake the service was terrible! I had to ask for refills 4 times. When the waitress came with my soft drink she told me what else do you want not professsional at all and my daughter in law ordered a steak dinner and the waitress brought a salad. The busboys were nice! Still I wanted to remain positive on this establishment! I asked to see the reception coordinator my son was curious if they have a menu for there reception party's most places do. The reception coodinator goes by the name Mickie! She was very nasty and rude! When my son asked her about the menu for the reception party! She told my son I am busy right now I don't have time to answer any questions! The menus are over there she pointed where they were at! And Told my son there is a dress code as well dear! And quickly walked away from our table! We payed the bill and we left! No I do not recommend the Magic Lamp Inn There are better places to eat and have a wedding reception! This restaurant is not one of them! Someone needs to fire at coodinator she is one rude women!

Ratings_icons Restaurant Review on Quality of Food, Service and Restaurant appearance

Ron L.

Restaurant is very expensive, Quality of t Ribeye Steak was a lot of fat with a bone attactched and was not tasty. The Restaurant had a very good appearance inside and out. We had to repeatedly ask for refills, ask for sauces for entree, and steak sauce. It is very dark inside, hard for seniors (like my mom) to see.
They did not specialize in anything.
The service by the waitress.was very poor The busboys were more helpful.
Although the restaurant has a nice appearance, I would not recommend this facility to anyone.

PROS: Nice looking building (inside & out) Ample parking. Handicapped a
CONS: Very dark inside with low lighting. Poor Service. Quality of food..average

Ratings_icons Great receptions

Wayne G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,238

I went to a busienss reception here, and enjoyed it. The decor was kind of dark and old fashioned, but the service was good and the food (a roast beef dinner) was great. They are able to accommodate large parties, and do a good job of serving them.
