This is a hard review to write as I normally complain directly to the source in hopes that comments will be used to improve the product. However, I was so entirely disappointed with this ride that I felt the need to share. Firstly I will state that I was in the trail riding business for over 20 years and still maintain a small riding school. Secondly, as part of my business research I got into the habit of riding every time we traveled and thus have been on trail rides in many parts of the US and throughout the Caribbean.

We are presently purchasing property in LA, nearing retirement years, and I was looking for a stable to frequent.
I appreciated many of the rules, having been in the same business for years and understand how difficult it is. However I was sorely disappointed with the entire experience.

Upon arrival we completed the forms etc. (a minor detail - we arrived promptly as we were threatened with a full prepaid no ride lose your money policy if you are late. We did wait about 15 mins before being attended to) But finally the guide came and gave us the little talk on what to do etc and we did have one first time rider in the group with one person who had ridden enough to know the basics and two ex trail guides and myself)

We were mounted and after one rider was allowing the horse to move around the mounting area while the rest of the group was mounted she was rudely told to stay in line and pulled back into position. A simple we need to stay in this order please (as each stable has their own policies concerning this) would have sufficed. The rudeness was uncalled for.

Off on the trail the guide was extremely surly and gave no helpful information to the beginner. Whenever one of us tried to assist her he would turn back and yell the opposite of whatever we said and made caddy remarks about how all the fuss was only for English riding. Point being he made not effort to give her any advice (in which case we would have respected his position and not tried to help) but totally resented any one else saying anything about horses. He clearly wanted to be the undisputed expert regardless of anyone else's experience level. Yet at the same time was not really giving her any advice. They expect you to simply sit on the horse and not do anything just like those mule rides when the mules are all tied together.

We selected this stable because we were told that it was the only stable in the area that would allow riders to go faster than a walk. We were reassured that the guide would pay attention to how the riders were doing and let us have a bit of a trot (would not expect more with a first timer along and not much trotting with a beginner either). But this was not the case. We walked the entire ride with an unpleasant guide.

The Scenery was lovely and the horses well cared for (over weight if anything, but this is a continual debate among the top trainers of the world so we won't go there)

So although disappointed with the guide, the two guests, the beginner and basic rider were enjoying the experience (except for the comments on the guides' grumpy attitude), we plodded along enjoying the view.

We returned to the stable after an hour and 5 minutes. It took a few minutes to dismount making it an hour and 10 minutes. When I questioned the guide as to why we returned early (as I had paid for an hour and a half upon the assistance of the Carmen who booked the ride) the guide stated that it was only 10 minutes early. It was in fact 25 minutes early and 20 minutes if dismounting was counted which should not be the case.
Due the expense of the ride to be cut short is pretty much a rip off. The extra half an hour was at an additional charge.

So my basic comments on this ride are too many rules that don't translate into a great ride and yes the horses may be well cared for but the riders are not. They do not deliver what they promise and for the price this is definitely an issue. If you pay a premiere price, you expect a comparable experience. This stable does not provide value for money.

The horses are well cared for and happy. They love to get out of the yard. I love that this place lets you ride as your skill level allows. The guide we had was very friendly and matched us very well with the horses we rode. The location is stunning and we got lucky with perfect weather and there were no other riders in our party. The ride location was great, a very quiet, beautiful I love topanga and I can't recommend this enough it was great.

I would gladly go back. One of the best horse rental locations I've ever been to.
