In Short
From the colossal fresh floral bouquet that faces guests as they enter to the dripping chandeliers and thematic use of velvety red, everything at the Starlight is opulent. Friendly bartenders pour plenty of cosmos and the club's signature Cable Car--a cinnamon-rimmed brandy libation--is a must-try. A well-heeled crowd takes to the sprawling lounge filled with linen-draped cocktail tables and high-backed banquettes for drinks, or to the dance floor for Top-40 tunes spun by a DJ.

Key Points

  • Sunday Brunch
  • DJ's or Live Music Nightly
  • Small Plates Menu

The Inside Scoop

  1. Parking - Valet is available at the hotel, otherwise the closest parking garage is the Union Square (between Post and Geary streets).

  3. What to Drink - The line of "Million Dollar Cocktails," which cost $90-$650, use super-premium liquors like Louis XIII de Remy Martin and Macallan 25 Years Old. Splurge on "Drinking the Stars" ($325 for 750 ml), Dom Perignon mixed with Chateau de Ravignan 1979 Armagnac infused with Madagascar vanilla bean, orange peel and raisins.
  4. Look Good - A dress code is strictly enforced: No caps, sportswear or jeans are permitted.

fun!

by shelley w. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 246

I have been to Harry Denton's Starlight Room on several occassions. The president of the company I use to work for loved going here whenever he was in SF so we would make sure it was on his schedule. It was great music, beautiful views, and lots of fun.

Party on top Sir Francis Drake hotel

by Jeime B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,277

We have been at the Starlight Room several times with friends and co-workers. This place always had live band playing during the time we have visited. My husband had a company party at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel and everyone enjoyed dancing and lounging in the Starlight Room.

PROS: Great music and crowd
CONS: Parking is difficult, unless you use their valet service

panoramic views

by M H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 574

on a clear night, the starlight room is beautiful.. the views are that is. otherwise, it just feels like you're partying up in heaven. i have 2 completely different experiences. once, i noticed that most of the crowd consisted of old men and young girls.. enough said! and the other time, it was super packed, the ceilings were sweating and you couldn't get to the bar for at least 20 minutes.. the place definitely upscale but you have to go just once.

High Class entertainment

by B J. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,159

This is one of those places you need to go at least once (or more) if you are in San Francisco. Its a classic spot not really a bar but a high class joint that you can take that someone special and really show then the best side of San Francisco. The bar is located in downtown San Francisco and sits atop the Sir Fances Drake so you are pretty much guaranteed the best view in town. The dcor of the establishment is great right from the 30s or 40s if your grandparents or parents talk about how San Francisco used to be I am sure this place would bring back old memories. I often like to go to the lounge after a nice meal or after a show they have excellent live entertainment by The Starlight Orchestra and it is always a good time. The pries are not cheap so be sure to bring Cash or a fresh Credit card but if you want to impress that special someone or really wow your guest take them to the Starlight room and they will be impressed and thankful.

PROS: Great Views
CONS: Price

Ruined Wednesday night at Starlight

by dellamora

Wow what a great ending to a nice evening with friends.
While sipping some champagne and conversing with friends I had the great idea to pick up a rose falling from the central vase. I put it in my hair and all my friends complimented me on how well it matched what I was wearing.
Right away the bouncer, with no life of his own, came and literally threw me and my friends out of the club, but not before making a point to shout at me and try to publically humiliate the whole group of us.
I am so happy that this establishment has professional doormen working for them instead of those guys you would find bouncing obnoxious people outside of a slummy bar. It truly made me disgusted with the fact that I wasted a perfectly good Wednedsday night I could have otherwise spent somwhere else.

Pros: meeting friends

Cons: staff working at starlight

I used to work close by..

by Irish31344

In 1968 when I lived in SFO.. I was a poor Irish Lass struggling to make ends meet. I love to go to the bars after work. Don't think HARRY'S was around back then. It would have been my place.. where they knew my name, and I could sit and chat with the guys after work. Anything on Powell or Golden Gate would have been on my way home. I wish, I wish, I could be there now. I would walk in and the guy behind the bar would hollar... HI, Healthy.. yep that is what they called Irish back then. She was quite a handful. After a couple of drinks, a few snacks at happy hour... Irish would have continue the walk home along golden gate avenue to Fulton & Fillmore... walk in the front door to the building and climb the stairs to her studio apartment -- rent $85 a month.. I wish I wish... it could still be that cheap. But it is not. And I am no longer young, but I will be visiting Harry's in September when I visit SFO where I left my heart.. to see if I can find it again after 40 year. LQQK for the little ol blue haired lady on her BLUE MACHINE... going GREEN to SAVE MOM... yep, mother earth is mad and we had better pay attention.

Pros: Everything

Cons: NONE

The Bouncers are Total Losers

by flourett2008

OK so this place has nice decor a great views......BUT!!! Unless u like watching fat bouncers dance to techno, and old people undressing you with their eyes DO NOT GO!!! The place is filled with OLD PEOPLE. It looks more like a upscale nursing home than a club/lounge. The biggest disappointment was the BOUNCER AT THE DOOR. He was such a little wh0re and needs to be fired. Wait no, don't fire him. San Francisco already has too many homeless people. Besides, poor guy, he's about in his thirties and still just a measly bouncer for a TERRIBLE CLUB. I suggest you rename the place Harry Denton's Nursing Home With Loser Bouncers!

Pros: View

Cons: Bouncers/ People/ Vibe

Pretty View and Decor........

by mxgirl280

But that is about it. My boyfriend and I came here on vacation and had the very best time........however the nightlife in SF had really let us down. Maybe we were in the wrong area, but we went to 5 different places and none were great. This place we thought would be nice considering the location, and when we walked in the place was very pretty with a great view. However, thats about it. The crowd was the strangest mix of people ever! It was four deep at the bar, and there was a man dressed litterally like a pimp from a snoop dog video that would not stop trying to "mack" on me, even though my 6 foot 3 boyfriend was right next to me. We got a table on a Saturday night with no problems, one right by the window......very nice view. Ordered a bottle of champagne and sat back and just watched the specticale of crazy people there. A ton of older people that act like they never get to go out, so they were letting it all hang out.....litterally! There were so many fat old women there I thought my poor man was gonna be ill. And all of them bumping and grinding on the dance floor to rap music! The people and music DO NOT match the fantastic location and look of the place! Too bad they are not a little more discriminitive on who they let in. Dress code not enforced at all! Oh, except for the snazzy pimp!

Pros: Lush Decor and Great View

Cons: Dress code not enforced, and "urban" music

LAME-O

by osunikki

So if you don't have a booth reserved don't bother going. I had a friend come in town from San Diego so I took her there last minute on a Wednesday night, thus we did not have a booth. There was no where to sit down which would have been fine if we were permitted to STAND or exist however. Unless we were dancing bouncers were ordering us to "keep moving". We felt like a herd of cattle. The last straw was when they played JT's classic "Sexyback" twice in a span of an hour. I almost threw up, yet the brainless idiots in there continued to "rock on". The staff was rude and acted like they were doing you a favor by showing up and the drinks were WAY overpriced. The only thing positive I can say about the Starlight Room is that I liked the decor. In this wonderful city we live in, there are amazing places much more worthy of your dollar. Your research will pay off. If you like crowded bars, rude staff w/ low IQs, long lines, overpriced and dilluted drinks and lame pop music, this place is for you!

Pros: Decor

Cons: Where do I begin?

Nothing Special

by asudman

The band was awful. I asked for a vodka tonic and got a gin and tonic. When I told the bartender, he made the drink again but it was a vodka and soda (big difference). Selection of beers is pathetic and the diet coke was flat. Nice location, attractive surroundings, great view, but not worth the $15 cover.

Pros: Great View, good for over 30-scene.

Cons: Bad drinks, awful band.

Always a great experience

by mikedes

My wife and I always enjoy the Starlight Room when we are in the city. Must make reservations to guarantee a table. Their light affair style menu is excellent, always very well presented. We have never been disappointed with the entertainment and the clientele is excellent. It was a little disappointing that they did not enforce a better dress code as some customers were dressed very casual, jeans and tennis shoes. Menu is a bit pricey but well worth it. Expect to spend about $75 - $100 per person for the evening.

Pros: Entertainment top notch, view of the city is outstanding, food is great.

Cons: A bit pricey, dress code was not enforced.

horrible

by ctizz

It took us about 30 minutes to get drinks, they gave us the wrong drinks, and they were expensive and tasted like there could have been maybe a drop of alcohol in it. The bouncers were rude and literally yelled at us!! And the dance floor was overcrowded with sweaty people. Do not go!

Rude Staff

by odette64

I was there with 6 friends after we just got there and got some drinks, the staff scream at us cuz we are staying on their way to the dance floor. It was pretty full for us to go anywhere else. I think for the money we paid to get in there, talking to us more nicely would have been very apreciated. Other than that the vue is gorgeous. But I will never go back.

Pros: Vue

Cons: Expensive

Almost too much fun

by travelindan

After dinner my wife and I stopped in for a drink about 10:00 P.M. while while SF last summer. It was Friday night and the place was full, the band was superb and we had a simply great time!! Somewhere about 3:00 A.M., my wife reminded me that it had been over 24 hours since we had slept. We were having too much fun to leave. This is a great place with great drinks, great views, a classy, dressy crowd, and a great band. We will be there for sure next time we are in SF.

Classy

by lgutier1

My girlfriend and are of the middle aged crowd and we loved this place. It was very dim, very romantic. The live band played a mix of fast and slow R&B hits from the 70's and 80's. We haven't found a place like this where we can slow dance. A great place to take your sweetie.

Pros: Romantic, Live Music, Slow Dances

What a let down!

by garyp

My wife and I visited SF in August. It was one of the best vacations we've ever taken. We decided to end the trip by making reservations, getting decked out, aand visiting the Starlight Room.
What a let down.
The foodwas good, but the service was horrible. It was a special night for us, and we wanted to end the trip on a high note. It didn't happen.
The wait staff, from the hostess at the door, to the waitress, to the bartender.... I felt invisible the whole evening.
We stayed at the Drake.... it was great! Do yourself a favor and skip the Starlight Room.

Great place to stop for a drink...

by banananutbread

Sure, this legendary SF spot can be rather kitchy at times-- but I'd have to say it is a great place to stop for a drink and an even greater place to take tourists-- as there is a great aerial view of the Union Square.
