Beware Freshmen! This place is a rip off.

I was surprised to find that they had books that were sometimes MORE expensive than the bookstore.

Now I almost never purchase books from the bookstore.

Get them online. Sites like http://www.berkeleytext.com offer price comparisons so you get the cheapest textbooks.

and of course comegetused.com works great too if it's a popular class

Always long lines, new untrained employees (they hire students, and they're always new every year). Not much product to buy except for the textbooks.

Pros: (for them) Monopoly over Cal students

Cons: Everything else

.

Even if Ned's has a book on its shelf claiming it's for your class, don't believe it. Apparently they get their information from public lists that aren't always up to date. Also, their early return deadline makes exchanges impossible.

Getting a good deal on textbooks is tough, but I guess having two competing bookstores in town helps. The prices at Ned's are slightly better than those at the Student Store. Their shelves are really unorganized and it takes forever to find anything. However, during the peak book buying season, they do open up a LOT of registers so you can be sure to be in and out as quick as possible.

This is a great bookstore that allows you to get all of your textbooks that you need for class. The prices are reasonable and they have it all there including school suplies.

PROS: great place to get all your textbooks
CONS: lines get quite long

Ned's Bookstore claims that they are the cheapiest. That is sometimes false, I've found books at Ned's Bookstore that were exactly equal to the cost at the University bookstore, and even when it is true, it usually is only by one or two dollars. What's the point of saving one or two dollars when buying all of your college books is going to cost two hundred to five hundred dollars? Ned's Bookstore's staff is unfriendly and have some very weird people working there.

The clothing they sell at a much lower price compared to the University store is all from Hanes - you might as well go onto some online store and buy your own clothing and put the words 'Cal' on it.

Right across the street from ASUC on Bancroft, there's Ned's bookstore for your college textbook needs. Prices are mostly similar to ASUC, but sometimes you will be able to find new/used books at a lower price. Usually, their collection is more complete than that of ASUC and their costumer serivce is satisfactory. You can also find coupons for the store in the "Good life in Berkeley" guide. Overall, this is a pretty good place to get your textbooks with little hassle.

Freshmen are told to buy books locally as it saves them the trouble of finding it online which seems as a hassle to some. For those who find used book search online to be a hassle, Neds offers those a local store with all necessary books but comes with a much higher price. Compared to Half.com and other online textbook searches, my book cost for this semester totaled 220 dollars as compared to over 300 dollars it would have cost me at Neds. The lines for purchases and returns are extremely long during the first 2 weeks of school as students are adding and dropping classes. The buyback price for books is also a major drawback of Neds. Buying a new book for 100 dollars, would yield only near 50% of original value when sold back to Neds. Neds then promptly puts the used book back at the beginning of next semester at 80-90 dollars.

Ned's is the way to go to buy college textbooks. They always carry books for much cheaper than the official Berkeley Student Bookstore. Also, they always have used books so that's a plus. The customer service is wonderful and you will know exactly what you need for the classes you have. They also have this card where if you buy $150, you get $5 store credit.

Ned's, located right across the street from the ASUC student bookstore, is an excellent alternative. They carry just about every book you'll need, organized by subject and class. Prices are very competitive. I used to check prices at Ned's versus the ASUC, and Ned's was often a bit cheaper. The staff there is friendly and helpful. Whenever I was having trouble locating a book, an employee would help me find it. And if it appeared out of stock, they'd double check for me. Be aware that the aisles are kind of narrow, so during peak times it may be hard to maneuver through the store.

PROS: Excellent selection. Competitive prices.
CONS: Tight spacing.

Ned's is primarily a textbook store for UC Berkeley and Vista Community College. The retail area is bright, well-lit and the books for your class easily found. Usually, textbooks can be found for a buck or two cheaper than the Cal Student (Textbook) Store. For Cal students (directly across the street), Ned's also offers some Cal apparel.

Ned's has set itself up as a one-stop shop for the college student. In addition to the textbooks, shoppers can also get reference books, study aids, notebooks, pens and more. While convenient, the selection is limited and the prices can definitely be found lower elsewhere. If not for the captive textbook market, Ned's would quickly sink.

Ned's Is a leading competitor to the Berkeley Student store, and while it's rates are low, it still rips off students. However, the store is large and provides all of your student supplies such as pencils, pens, blue books, scantrons, and even apparel. If you shop around for you books, you can find a decent price here.

Neds is a onestop for new and used books for the secondary education seekers. They specialize in used books but carry plenty of new if desired. The store setting is a bit outdated, no access for disabled college students but the prices are more than happy for your wallet.
