Walking into Kan Zaman, you'll feel like you just walked into the set up a ballywood movie. From the furniture to the walls, you're swept away to another world. Flavored Hooka action is always fun, and belly dancing will for sure put you in a happy place. While the food IS good, it's not by any means award winning. You'll come here for the atmosphere and good times. Call ahead if you have a group.

PROS: good times
CONS: can be hard to find parking

A small restaurant/hookah bar located in SF with great food and atmosphere. The food is good. The Hookah's are affordable. Simply a great place to hang out with friends in the late night. Would definately recommend anyone.

PROS: hookah, price, atmosphere
CONS: too dark and not enough tables

If you're going to visit one restaurant in San Francisco and went to get a real feel for the City, this is the one to visit. Kan Zaman is an authentic Mediterranean restaurant featuring a great menu (the Musaka is out of this world) and a full-length hookah bar. After kicking off your shoes and dining seated on pillows in front of a low table, and being entertained by belly dancers during your meal, belly up to the hookah bar for a pipe of your favorite flavored dessert tobacco. Regular tables are also available, for the less adventurous.

PROS: Great food, reasonable prices, taste of world culture
CONS: None

The food here is delicious! I've never had anything bad, and I'm one of the pickiest eaters on earth. They have a bar, and at times you can smoke flavored tobacco from hookas, but the restrictions are tighter each time I go in. They have a lot of pillow seating at long or round tables, and the food is best if served family style.

The only downside is the wait on the weekends. If only they were larger. It's best to do during the week.

PROS: Belly dancing certain nights
CONS: Possible wait on weekends

We arrived last night around 10pm to grab a bite before a show. The waitress asked if we had a reservation. I looked around at 5 empty tables and said "No, will there be a huge wait?"

She said no, it wouldn't be very long, and asked us to wait at the bar. We waited through a drink and about 15 minutes. When I asked her again about the wait, she told me 45 minutes. So, her idea of "not long" had been an hour?

The tables were still empty, so we sat down at one because my feet were killing me. No one brought us menus or an explanation, and after about a half hour, we walked out...

The food looked good, but we didn't have the time or energy to deal with that level of pretention.

I used to like this place a lot , but not anymore. I tried few times, but I am done. I used to work in a restaurant business, and I can understand that customer is really not always right, but this experience was ridiculous. Mess up our reservation after two confirmations. Not letting us know tha we can't order some items even when we order them. Service showing up every 40 minutes. Undone food. Unprofessional manager who is trying to seat his friends at our table, trying to hurries us up out of restaurant. I am sorry, but this is unacceptable and very dissapointing. I liked this place, but I will never come back or recommend it to my friends.

This place is so much fun for a big group. Belly dancing, nice drinks, hookahs... atmosphere is so lively! By the end of the night everyone is laughing, dancing and having a great time. The food is pretty good, falafels are amazing. Go with an open mind and it will be amazing.

I will never ever eat in this place ever again.....
Terrible neighborhood and atmosphere. The food was OK but not great.
Our server was rude and he didn't want to open our wine bottle we brought with us - I paid a cork fee
for a dirty look from our server. May I remind him a tip is for good service ONLY, I left him nothing.

The service is awful, some of them are well-intended servers/bartenders in a overly crowded place but others like the bouncer are just plain rude. If you want to go for the food, which is not the best mediterrenean in town, go before 8 or expect to wait and have an unpleasant time. If you want a hookah place I suggest Marrakesh, if you want a bar scene any other place on haight street will do. This scene is overdone and not that fun

Not worth it anymore. As a long-time resident of the city, I have been here many times. Each time it gets less and less worth it, and now I am done. Friend came to town, wanted to show them a good time, made a reservation for 7pm (early!) one week in advance. Called to confirm that with only five people, we could still get the cushioned window seat, gave them a credit card to hold. They said it was fine. Plan was to slowly enjoy ourselves, drink, eat, spend some money, see the dancer, smoke a hooka for dessert. Got there, was told they won't guarantee the window table, instead put us next to the bar. Waitress was unable to describe most of the dishes. By 830pm it was totally packed to the brim with people, undoubtedly a fire hazard at the most, and at the least extremely uncomfortable to us. The crowd was so packed in it was like a wave of people at the ball park, that actually pushed itself into our food more than once! One of them spilled red wine on my vintage grey suede coat, permanently ruining it, which was stashed inside our booth. The dancer was great, but kept getting bumped into. Two more highlights: After all that, no hookahs allowed at the tables until the kitchen closes, which on the weekends is midnight; and at 930pm we were asked to leave by the hostess because other people were waiting for our table. Are the owners this stupid?!! Take care of the people sitting at the tables, and tell the others to wait outside. Or don't overbook! LAST THING: Food is not great, and that is the clincher if I am going to put up with all this other drama. As a huge fan of Mediterranean cuisine, I highly recommend La Mediterranee any day over ruined vintage.

ok, this place is a lot of fun, i will give it that. they have hookas and belly dancers and middle eastern food that is sometimes hard to find.
but....
the service is terrible. you have to wait up to 45 mins for a hooka, and you can never, ever get them to change your coal. the middle eastern food is really not that good if you are familiar with it, and the waiters a rude.
i suggest drinking before you go so you are lessed annoyed with everything.
good music though

I have been here twice since I first discovered the place. The atmosphere is awsome. At the bar there is hookah. The food was delicious! and very reasonable in rates. Kan Zaman has a fun atmosphere, there are belly dancers, and for birthdays the announce to the whole restaurant with a drum and the whole restaurant sings you Happy Birthday. I had a wonderful experience here and have been reccommendeding it to people ever since!

I was really excited to try this place out. Getting there on a Saturday night, however, proved to be a strained experience. The host/hostess, servers and bartenders are about as rude as you can imagine. Though there were open tables, we were seated in front of the door... meaning that People were constantly falling over us, spilling on us and thanks to the gusts of wind, we were freezing the whole time. When we asked if we could sit at a different table, they said that we could, but that they would "kick us out in 3o minutes." Additionally, service is incredibly slow and the servers are constantly annoyed. In all fairness, it probably isn't all their fault since the place is so small, you are rubbing up on strangers no matter if you are eating or at the bar.
The pros? The food is GREAT and there is live belly dancing on Saturday nights. The hooka is good too. Also, prices are very reasonably.
Still, expect to be despised by the waitstaff, receive your food an hour after ordering and be cramped the whole time.
Sidenote - I also went on a Sunday afternoon at 3:00 for a late lunch. It was empty, but the service was still rude and painfully slow!!!

Kan Zaman has a sultry Arabic influence written in every inch and leads you to a place afar!
Situated in a corner, this place has a small area with tents, dim lights and faces of the locals from the African and Saudi Arabic countries pasted on the walls. The crowd is buzzing and the atmosphere is filled with all forms of laughter and shouts with the Arabic music in the background. Reservations are not taken for less than 6 people and especially on a Saturday night, the wait for a table could be REALLY long.
We were introduced to this awesome joint by a couple-friend of ours, and we thoroughly loved it. After a little wait, we got the table. Started with the 'Spiced Wine, which is a must for everyone. There was Baba Ganoush, which was delicious with the pita bread. The entrees had a variety of choices and I had one of their specials of the day- which was chicken wrapped around spices...it was heavenly. The shish kabobs, lamb dishes and everything else were awesome. Ended with a few not so tequila shots and some classic hookah smoke, which was served at the bar!
The best part was definitely the belly dancers who stole the show with their moves and shakes. The balancing act of the swords on their head was commendable. A place with entertainment, good food and a hookah/wine bar- can you ask for more!

I was looking up hookah bars in the Bay Area and thought I'd check this place out, and I must say I'm glad that I did. Three friends and I got there around quarter to 9 and were seated promptly (though from what I've read it may not be so prompt on days other than Sunday). It was kinda loud so I had some trouble getting the waitress's attention, however once we ordered our appetizers were brought out promptly. The green salad was kind of salty/overly dressed, but the spicy sausage was tasty and the meat pie was delicious... I'd go again just for the meat pie. Soon thereafter we got our entrees, which were quite good as well. At some point during the meal they brought out a couple of belly dancers from a local group who were very entertaining. After the meal we headed to the bar for some hookah. Next time I will definately try something other than apple, but even so it was very nice and chill.
I can see where people have said the service isn't good, but I didn't have a real problem with my service, save for a bartender forgetting to give us water. The one main complaint I have is they give you lots of pita, but they charge for hummus. Other than that it was a great experience.

Ok, Kan Zaman isn't exactly a "hidden treasure" -- on most evenings, this place is packed and you'd be lucky to get a seat. However, I've never had to wait long for a table here and I've been coming to this restaurant for at least 5 years. The atmosphere transports you to Egypt/Iran/Morocco/Turkey -- take your pick -- and the smell of strawberry-flavored tobacco immediately sets the mood as you walk in the door. The food is excellent and modestly priced, but the service can be a bit rushed (they're usually slammed). The belly dancing alone is a reason to come (check for times and days), and makes this my favorite place to bring out of town guests. The spiced wine is a must-have when you come here, I have it every time. Definitely worth a visit, you'll be back again and again.

Had a large party to get seated at 10pm. Obviously at that time some people have already eaten and are coming just for the hookahs. They still charged us per head for those people, and brought out $50 worth of food, charging us $300 for it. Then for the birthday person, we brought a cake and they charged a cake cutting fee, but didn't cut the cake.

On the plus side, the hookahs and belly dancing was great, but overall not a good value for a large party.

The food was great, the spiced wine divine and what the belly dancers could do with their hips - oh man. We went as a large group for a bachelorette party and had a blast. It was very crowded and I highly suggest reservations. If you want to smoke a hooka the apple or strawberry are recommended - and the ventilation is great, so don't worry about the smoke. Also the seating is very low, so long legged people may need to stretch their legs across under the table. Be sure to wear comfy clothes and shoes. Will definitely go back again - and it is worth the 300 mile trip I have to make just to go.

If you get there and don't have a group larger than six, except a looooooooong wait! We waited for over a hour and a half, but once seated enjoyed the restaurant. Great appetizers, very authentic and yummy!! Try the tabouli, falafel and hummus, you won't be disappointed ;-) The best part is when the dinner stops being served, the music gets loud and the dombak is taken out! We were able to get up and dance with the rest of the patrons! Awesome time! Would and will go back.

They have always had the best hot spiced wine by the glass or the pitcher...I usually drink a pitcher myself it is so wonderful! Also food is good but the service has always been variable. The dancers are great, they usually are off shoot groups from Fat Chance Belly Dance. Just can't beat it on a Friday or Saturday nite when it is packed, aromatric and oh so surreal.

Belly dancing starts at 9pm thursday-saturday, and they are great! try the casablanca beef couscous stew, it's wonderful! The best spot in the house is under the canopy, but try an off night if you want one of those tables without a large party reservation (only 6 or more- and there's a seperate menu for large parties as well).

try the arabic tea (iced). i loooooved that stuff.

evenings (especially fri & sat) can get very crowded so, get there relatively early and take your time with each course because the belly dancers perform around 10p, i think.

reservations for parties of 6 or more only.

otherwise, hit the place up for brunch or a late lunch and you can pretty much bring a book and get some quiet time to yourself while sipping some iced arabic tea :-)

This restaurant probably has the worst middle eastern food I have ever had. I went there a second time to make sure that I wasn't off my head. The food is DIABOLICAL.

However, I love smoking the hukkas and the ambiance is great. So I go back for teas and smokes but KEEP AWAY from food.

It really is poor.

The service at this restaurant was by far the worst I've had anywhere, including a fast food restaurant. I saw our waitress exactly twice throughout the entire meal, the first time to get our order and the last time to give us our bill. She never came by to check on us if we needed anything or if the food was okay, she completely ignored us! The food was also quite bland. It was not an enjoyable experience.

I saw our waitress exactly twice throughout the entire meal, the first time to get our order and the last time to give us our bill. She never came by to check on us if we needed anything or if the food was okay, she completely ignored us! The food was also quite bland. It was not an enjoyable experience.

Pros: None

Cons: Bad Service, Bland Food

.

I've never experienced worst service! They gave us the wrong food and INSISTED that they were right. The food was tasteless. Save yourself from a bad experience.

I would recommend this place for all of its food, not just barbecue. I especially like the fact that there are many tables that you can sit on the floor cushions and eat.
