Conveniently located in San Francisco's Financial District... up the alley from the Transamerica Pyramid. Since 1928, Alfred's has served the finest, mouthwatering, aged mesquite broiled steaks from the very best Midwestern corn-fed cattle. Such specialties as the kingly porterhouse, the magnificent chateaubriand, the flavorful Chicago rib steak, as well as fresh salmon fillets, and the broiled rack of lamb offer our guests a true culinary treat. We have one of the largest single malt scotch lists in the Bay Area. Select from over 100 labels of scotch or over 130 wines in Alfred's bar. Join us for lunch, dinner, or a drink in the bar.

The Scene
Set in an alley and seemingly back in time, this masculine steakhouse is a respite for those seeking steak and stellar service. Generous pours from the bartender make the crowd of mostly business diners feel like regulars. Red leather booths, burgundy walls and plush carpet heighten the historic charm.

The Food
Aged beef is the star, so no matter the cut, it is served in its natural state unless diners request a pepper, garlic, bearnaise or chimichurri sauce. Using Alfred's Steak, a 20-ounce, bone-in New York cut, as a gauge, it is doubtful diners will leave hungry. The Tuscan T-bone, sitting atop a bed of spinach, is wonderfully tender, with hints of rosemary and garlic. And non-beef-eaters need not fret; a grilled-eggplant vegetable plate, seafood and fettuccine Alfredo are on the menu. Two generously portioned sides--a choice between garlic mashers, baked potato, french fries, ravioli, creamed spinach or fresh vegetables--accompany all entrees.

I went there with a group. I found the food was uninspiring. I agree with the reviewer who said he could do better at home. I think I could do better at the frozen section in the grocery store. The atmosphere was too cheesy. The service was adequate. With some many other fine steak houses in San Francisco, I recommend you try somewhere else.

Pros: service

Cons: , food

Ratings_icons Good Place, But Nothing Special

thurss1101

I am from out of town, and wound up taking my wife their for our anniversary. The steaks (once they were prepared properly) were ok, just nothing special. Seating was fast. Actually, the place was empty until ~830. The waiter was great and very attentative to our needs. The decor was tooooo red, and the beef at the front of the restaurant could have been better placed somewhere else. Overall, we had a good evening, but I am sure we could have found somethng better in a city with many restaurants.

Pros: Fast Seating

Cons: Decor

Alfred's is a classic San Francisco venue. Great food, old fashioned service. You would almost expect DiMaggio to step out from behind a door. A must if you want the classic, classy San Francisco experience.

Pros: Great food, Great service

Cons: Higher priced

The best steak house around. We have gone with large parties of over 20 and small parties, always great service and even better food! Other steak houses have been recommended to us, and we have tried them, but we always go back to Alfred's. The best by far!

My boyfriend and I have the best time at Alfred's. Always. Without question the steak is the best in the city-boyfriend likes the 60 oz porterhouse! Waitor was nice to us for being young folks. The booths for two are very romantic.

Pros: romantic, great food, nice service

Cons: hard to find

Ratings_icons TACKY!

O.K. service, we had to ask for water. The steak wasn't very good. It was my friend's birthday and I asked if they did anything special. The waiter said, "Yes, what kind of cake would he like?" He brought my friend a piece of cheese cake and then CHARGED us for it. Here, we payed $200+ for a meal for 5 people and he charged us for the piece of birthday cake. TACKY
oh yea, the place smelled like diapers!

Pros: good wine, red walls

Cons: food only o.k, smells bad, expensive

New Year's Eve and Alfred's...perfect together! The staff and decorations added to the colorful display of an already fine restaurant. Fun hats and noise makers were presented at our place settings with hundreds of balloons balancing on every inch of the ceiling. We were treated like royalty and the five course dinner was delicious. I loved the duck pasta appetizer! The steak portions were generous. The Filet Mignon was a little chewy.. but hey, I was in a good mood for the new year!! Would rather have it not charred on outside. Drinks and wine list are extensive. Try this steak house for a romatic evening.

Ratings_icons Happily Satisfied

I have been going to Alfred's for years and have been happily satisfied every time. I recently took a new client who enjoyed the Bond martinis and the bone-in New York steak. I have eaten all the cuts and every steak has been very good. I love the tortellini della casa and the caesar salad is the best I have had anywhere. I enjoy the wine and single malt selections and every guest I have introduced to Alfred's has been very pleased.

Pros: a great evening, nice banquet rooms

Having been recommended this place we were sadly disappointed with the service and the quality of the food. If you want good food and better service go to Mortons instead

Ratings_icons Old School Grubbin'!

soma_foodie

Awesome joint. Takes you back in time. Old school waiters, very knowledgeable, great service. The food is delicious, and no frou frou frills... just meats done great, potatoes to die for, and fabulous creamed spinach. Oh, and of course, you gotta start off with a martini or other old school cocktail - bartenders know the meaning of a generous pour! Way better than Harris'. Just no comparison.

Pros: valet parking, not too SF'd out!, knowledgeable staff
