OSH's commercials are actually very accurate. If you go in there and are looking for a solution to hammering tiny nails, an employee will suggest a comb. The employee to customer ratio is generous at the Berkeley OSH (as compared to Emeryville Home Depot where staff seems scarce), and the men and women working there have great knowledge in their departments. Good paint and plant departments particularly. Plants are also guaranteed for life, in case you don't have a green thumb.

This OSH is way better than the Home Depot down the street in Emeryville because it's a lot cleaner (they have a "real" floor) and it is a lot less crowded. They might not carry giant pieces of lumber, but that means you won't hear the loud saws buzzing away all the time either. They keep everything well-stocked and the people walking around the floor are genuinely helpful and knowledgeable. (Except the cashiers who are slightly apathetic.)

CONS:

when your project is too big for the neighborhood hardware store, OSH is the place to go. it's much calmer than Home Depot and you can actually find people to help you. The Berkeley location is particularly pleasant to shop at. The staff is very knowlegable and want to help out. They also have a great garden section with a replacement policy if you kill something. OSH carries the Kenmore line of tools.
