My son (about 2 & 1/2 at the time) and I enrolled in about 20 weeks worth of "big fish, little fish" (child and parent in the pool) swim classes at Maki. The overall experience was highly enjoyable for both me and my son and I would recommend Maki to anyone with a toddler interested in some year-round water fun.
The facilities themselves are nothing spectacular, but don't detract from the fun or learning. The pool, which is indoor and heated, is on the small side, but plenty big for five or six toddlers, their parents, and an instructor.
My son had 2 different instructors during our 20 weeks, and both were very friendly, patient, and fun. The instruction varies by age group and capability, but the 2-year-olds class focuses on having fun, getting comfortable in the water, developing some basic pre-swimming skills (e.g. floating, "scoopy" arms, drafting), and basic safety (e.g. using the safety pole, climbing out of the pool).
Classes are only a half hour, but with a pre swim rinse off in the shower, a post swim shower, and getting both you and your toddler dried off and dressed, the whole experience usually took us a full hour.
It's worth noting that the pool is actually located at:
1249 Kentwood Ave.
San Jose, CA 95129
In the DeAnza/85 Shopping Center
