Specializing in foreign car repair since 1978
  • Service and maintenance
  • Honest and competent
  • One-day service in most cases

Cowden Automotive was started in 1978 by Paul Cowden as a one-person foreign car repair shop dedicated to honesty and competence. Paul recognized that if you treated people in a friendly and intelligent manner and repaired their cars properly the first time they would be happy and refer their friends. By sticking with this simple and honest philosophy, Cowden Automotive has grown to a six-person, full-service auto care facility ready to keep you and your car happy and worry free.

Used car salesman treatment  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I was referred by a coworker. I took my 1995 Mazda here in 2004 when it sprung a "major" oil leak. It was gushing. After Cowden Automotive "fixed" it, it never stopped leaking, completely. It was easy to tell, since I park in my garage, at home - and can observe the oil slick.

When I brought my car back, they hooked it up to a machine, and ran a "diagnosis", and told me that I had something wrong with a bearing in one of my wheels, and would eventually need major work (eventually, the wheel would just fall off) and that although oil was still apparantly leaking, they couldn't tell me where the leak was coming from until after they cleaned the engine - which would cost several hundred dollars. Essentially, I had to pay a couple hundred dollars so they could tell me what I would need to pay to fix the problem.

The whole time was I was there, I felt as though I was being bilked, and taken advantage of. My car had serious problems, and I was pretty much at their mercy. The owner would go into this in depth explanation of what was wrong, and what was recommended, and how much it would cost - but in a *confident, used car salesman* sort of way.

I paid the $90 for their "diagnosis", and decided to trade my car in and buy a new car.

This is the company that gives good auto mechanics a very bad name. Steer clear of Cowden Automotive!"

Great place to take your car 5 Star Rating - World class

After a recent bad experience when I was forced to take my car elsewhere for sudden repairs, I was reminded how happy I am that my usual car maintenance and repair place is Cowden. The friendly staff take the time to explain everything thouroughly, are upfront about costs, and give a lot of detail on the work being done and why (if any) parts are needed. They are very realistic about advising what you need to do in the short term and in the long term for a safe and well run vehicle -- they don't push you to get everything done at once. My husband seems to think that they might be a bit more expensive than the average repair shop -- I can't really compare costs to anywhere else so I can't confirm or deny that -- but the excellent customer service and approachable staff will keep me coming back to them with my VW.

Best Auto Repair Anywhere ! 5 Star Rating - World class

I have owned my own auto repair facility in Minnesota (15 years) and worked at new car dealerships. Also I have worked at independent auto repair shops in Carmel, Santa Cruz, San Francisco and Sacramento as well. I was also fortunate enough to work for Cowden Automotive. Paul Cowden is the most professional person I have ever known. To say that he is thorough in all aspects of running his business is an understatement. Paul Cowden sets the example that all automotive repair shops should follow. Paul is so well spoken about his knowledge of cars that it leaves no room for doubt about what's been done to your car and why. His customers are a lot better educated about cars than a lot of mechanics I've known. And Cowden Automotive ALWAYS does the repair correctly. No cutting corners here with low quality parts or improper service procedures. On top of all of that he treats his emplyees better than any other business I have ever worked at. Again he sets the standard that other employers should live up to. Sincerely Mark G. Pflepsen, Sacramento, California.

Postive experience at Cowden. 5 Star Rating - World class

They were friendly over the phone and in person. The owner went over every part of the bill with me, explaining each cost, and what the repair involved. He followed up with me the two days when I had additional questions. The garage is clean and well organized. I am happy with my repairs, and plan on returning the next time something happens. They only con would be that I had to schedule almost 2 weeks out for repairs; perhaps because I had to have major work done that I knew would take a full day's work.

Pros: Very Friendly, Clean & Organized, Competive Pricing
