Talk about rats running this joint, not to mention the fly infestation..
by Danny M.
The owner is great but the manager "Danny" really is a hardheaded bastard. If only you the customer could see what filth comes in contact with your food and drink! Yikes!

Filippi's Pizza Grotto GREAT
by Cindy O.
I thought the food was great the place does not have the fancy atmosphere that some places charge you for but the Food looked great, smelled great and most of all tasted GREAT. The line to get a table was out the door on a Thursday Night. Best place in town I would highly recommend you go at least once. Family owned felt like I stepped into Italy.

They have several locations around downtown and Mission Valley and very convenient to our home, but, food is mediocre. Their well known for their pizza and submarine sandwiches, but there are better choices around. Atmosphere leaves alot to be desired but many families gather here.

Hi I found this great restaurant discount site with printable coupons. My favorite is La Vache in Hillcrest the coupon is 25.00 dollars off. Also 15 % off at Bottega from La Strada down town. San Diego restaurants

My family has been going to Filippis for more than thirty five years. We have always enjoyed the quaint atmosphere and the wonderful Italian food. we could not walk through the deli without buying something.

Ok so you might have to wait in a line if you get there late but the atmosphere and food are totally worth it. This is some of the best Italian food I've ever had. It reminds me of what my grandfather used to cook for me when I was little.
PROS: Atmosphere
CONS: The Wait

...and great prices too!
by Matt D.
I agree with the other positive reviews here. My family and I tried Filippi's for the first time last week, and what a great surprise it was! The ambience and yummy garlic bread kept the kids (ages 6 & 3) happy until the pizza came, and the pizza was top-notch in every aspect: crust, sauce, cheese, lots of toppings, hot.... The sausage could have been a bit spicier, but that's OK. Their *ground* crushed red pepper adds whatever spice you need. (We bought a couple jars to take home.) They have free parking just north of the restaurant, and dinner for the 4 of us came to $28 with tip, including a pint of Karl Strauss for me.
I'm picky about my pizza, and this is the BEST traditional pizza I've ever tasted. Being from the Chicago area, I still prefer a good Chicago-style pizza to anything else, but aside from that, Filippi's can't be beat.
P.S. Take home a package of pizzelle cookies from the market too!
PROS: the food, the food, the food, the pricing
CONS: the cramped waiting area (no big deal)

Possibly the best in San Diego

This little local secret spot has definately become quite the busy place. I found out about this place 3-4 years ago by complete accident and have eaten there ever since. I don't believe I have gone more than two weeks without ordering pizza from fillippi's. Beware of looong lines durring the evening. The lines do go relatively fast, but if you want to avoid them all together try going either early (around 4-5:00) or after 8:30. If you are visiting San Diego for the first time this resturant is and a walk through Little Italy is one of those "must do" things
PROS: Great Food, Nice people, Great Prices
CONS: Lines can be long

When I first are here we had to wait in a line that was out the restaurant, through the little Italian deli and out the door. Surprisingly, the line moved fast and the delicious smells definately got you an appetite by the time you sat down. Fresh bread was brought to the table. The prices are low and portions are generous. I definately had enought leftover pasta to have a second meal. I would classify this as a good family or friends restaurant.

I absolutely love Filippis, and come back as often as I can talk other people into going with me. I am a bit of a spaghetti person, and I love their sauce.

Filippis has been around for many years and is one of my favorite italian restaurants! Outstanding pizza and wonderful bread. The antipasto is great too. In fact, just about anything you order off the menu is outstanding.

A Piece of Italian Heritage in San Diego

This is one of those places that could be considered the cornerstone of San Diego. It's the kind of place that your grandmother (provided your grandmother was born in Italy) would be comfortable taking you down to, in order to go grocery shopping, and lunch. When you walk in the door, you are in an Italian grocery store - they have a large selection of Italian food, as they have since 1950.
If you walk down the aisle, you'll find yourself in a very busy Italian restaurant. It's a little on the loud side, but loud is what Italians do best (besides cook). The have several large rooms inside to dine in, or a large, enclosed patio where you could definitely fit a large party (and they do often). They offer fabulous pizza, torpedos, antipastos, and all sorts of other great Italian food. This is a great place to go with your family.
One of the most notable things about the restaurant, that I have to mention, is the hundreds of chianti bottles attached to the ceiling.
PROS: Best Place in Little Italy for Italian Food
