LA Fitness in Downey is a big disappointment. The receptionists often are talking on their cell phones or to each other and have almost never greeted me when I hand them my pass. I also belong to 24 Hour Fitness, and was shocked how unfriendly the staff are at LA Fitness in comparison. I take classes at the gym and am disappointed in the low quality of instructors and their classes at LA. I have complained several times, but nobody seems to care, even Lance, the former manager, who signed me up. I wonder if the instructors have any certification or training at all, because they are so terrible. There is only a small handful of instructors who I feel I get a good workout with, because most instructors make it way too easy. Only a few instructors even move to the beat of the music, which is completely annoying, as well as causing them to do uneven repetitions on each side (if they were even counting at all). I only go there because I moved down the street and 24 Hour Fitness is too far. I'm considering driving back to my old gym, even though it'll take over 30 min each way, because LA Fitness classes leave me so out of shape.Truly disappointing.

yes i agree with the above post, la fitness will debit your account too early. also i want to warn you about cancelling your membership. you have to send a form to the main office. you can't cancel at your gym, they may tell you that they cancelled your membership, but you will find that your account will continue to be debited for membership fees. so i recommend the following, send the letter and/or close your bank account and get a new one just in case.

La fitness is a great gym maybe people should just be more aware and read! If you have 30 dollars to pay the monthly there shouldn't be a problem now on the hand if you dont have that kind of money and you know it is automatically deducted why put your cc on file la fitness is a great gym better then any other gym ive tried.
I would recommend.
remember people read and you'll br fine.

Wow! These people on this page must have been having bad days! I went to the LA Fitness in Downey a few months ago and was very inspired by Lance. In fact, if it was'nt for him I probably would have left without joining. He really opened my eyes to where excercise is supposed to be in my life. Funny enough...he did say my LA Fitness membership card should be right next to my shower and toothbrush. He was right, excercise is normal hygiene. Thanks Lance, I thought you where great.

LA FITNESS SUCKS - coast to coast. Impossible not to recevie a patronizing answer to any of your questions. It's like all of their reps go and take an insulting/patronization course.
Getting ones' bank to get through their [LA Fitness] red tape is impossible. They are a sham.
P.S. whomever Rebecca A. is - learn how to spell you hick - then maybe someone would pay attention to your obviously bogus review.
Go work out you probably overweight, housewife from the midwest or middle of nowhere CA.!!!!!!!!
Why are they forcing me to choose at least a one star rating in order to submit my opinion??????

Terrible service. The Lance guy at this LA Fitness is rude and prejudice. When I went to sign up for a membership, he looked at me over and over again, as if he was saying, "Yeah, you sure do need to work out". I signed everything, and he actually told me, "It's a good thing you came here to a 'gym', because you need it. You're kinda on the chub side, and you need to work out, like you brush your teeth. You do brush your teeth daily, right?" I was astonished, and hurt. One because of his un-professionalism and rude commentary that was completely unnecessary, and two, because I had just had a kidney transplant. And what is the most common side effect to receiving a kidney transplant? You gain weight. Not because you eat like a pig, and let yourself go, but because of the medicine, and the kidney itself. For ten years I waited for a freaking kidney, and here he comes, knowing nothing of me, but my appearance. I came to work out because my doctors recommended it to me, so I wou
Lance, is not only rude but the old hag thinks he is "God's gift to women", only because he is toned and healthy. If he was in my situation, or knew a speck about it, I'm sure his stupid mouth would have kept quiet, and would have been respectful, courteous, and with manners.
And the place itself is unsanitary. It's not kept in good condition, or clean, and it's crowded!!! Too many people! The bathrooms are yuck!!!!
Oh, and when you sign up for your membership, they don't tell you, that if you ever want to cancel it, you need to write a letter to LA Fitness International offices in Irvine, CA. Nope, they just want your money right there, and then. You get screwed with the crappy service, the dogs of trainers and staff, and the unstoppable deduct from your bank account.
So, if you read this, and still want to go there, don't say you weren't warned. Because this place is all but "Customer Friendly". Haven't they ever heard of "The Customer is Always Right"?
- An Unsatisfied Customer
P.S: Fire Lance, or do something about him. He sure as hell is ready for retirement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to put a rating on this thing, but it wouldn't let me leave it blank. So I had to leave it with a freaking star. Be grateful, for that, LA Fitness!!!

I have been going to this Downey location on and off for 5 years. I quit my first time when I contracted some nasty foot virus from the shower (Veruca??). It was so bad I had to get an operation to get it extracted... anyhow, I returned after they did a major overhall/remodeling of the club. The Downey location still suffers from a cleanliness issue. People dont wipe down machines; janitors are dusting DURING workout hours; the antibacterial dispenser is ALWAYS EMPTY; The pool and jacuzzi are DISGUSTING; ... but the alternative of Balley's isn't that much better so I tolerated this. I just make sure to wear workout gloves and wash my hands after the workout.
The general manager is also a condescending guy and most of the staff not customer-friendly... maybe even racist... but that is a topic for another review

Here is my second review. I requested that my two add-on memberships be removed from my membership and here it is 2 months later and they are still removing those funds from my bank account.Mind you that this was done in person AND in writing. The whole experience has been terrible.

What a great experience I had today at this fitness center. Not only is the club fabulous, but the people that work there where incredible. They where truly interested in helping me reach my goals. I was very intimidated to go in but once I arrived the manager Lance made me feel at ease and taught me what I needed to do get what I wanted. Two thumbs up!

I really loved this club until I found that even though I agreed to have my payment extracted from my bank account on the 15th of each month, I am sitting here on the 9th of the month wondering why I have so many NSF fees in my account. Here's why. When I originally signed up, the sales guy led me to believe that I was on a one week free pass for that first week, while he held a post-dated check for me, dated the 15th. I then came into the club with my daughter on a free pass, and then my husband. The sales guy spotted us out and had us sitting back at the table again in the midst of our workout. He then agreed to "help us out", since it was the "last day of the special". He used what was supposedly his own credit card and continued to say over and over again that he was using his own card and being Mr. Niceguy. He said he would put a small deposit down for us to get the deal with his own credit card, then have me give him cash for the portion he put on his credit card at a later date. My check, mind you, is still post-dated on the 15th to be deposited then. I am still under the impression we are still on our guest passes for the first week. And yes, the sales guy is a bit too much, to the point of bad service when he is pulling you off the workout floor when you're in the middle of it.He is actually the manager of the Downey club. Now I dont know what this nice guy was really up to, but I am sure it had something to do with his sales quota. Now I am sitting here with my rent check for 1700 bouncing, and three SEPERATE CHARGES, one for myself, my daughter and my husband, funds on hold. This means that all 3 of these will bounce and the rent check, resulting in $120 NSF fees. I tried to see if they could change my pmt. date for the 15th as originally led to believe, beginning next month, and they said yes but it would be an extra 6.95 per person each month. I feel cheated and I feel the manager of the club was shady all the way with whatever he was doing when he signed me up. As well ,I have been with other clubs and the monthly fee is never charged seperately. Its al lone lump sum. I AM paying for all of us each month, why should it be seperate anyways? As far as the club itself goes, its great, roomy, and the girls arent dressed like they are ready to hook up, like the other small, crowded club in Downey.

I met with a very pushy, obnoxious, patronizing sales rep at their Downey office on Firestone today, and let me tell you, if he is an example of the type of club this is, you don't want to be there. You know, you make an inquire on line and they call you and want to meet you with, but when you get there, it's like they don't want to do anything to work with you, other than push on all the wrong buttons - wow - change your approach dudes. Get Lance out of there and I'm sure you'll be getting a lot more business
