5 Stars: As Always...A Great Experience (by BoothV)

I had some friends in from out of town today and made sure to put Grub on our late morning itinerary. It's not the first time I've brought some out-of-towner's to Grub and, as usual, I came out looking like a superstar.Food is always great...server's are always smiling and the ambiance always makes me feel like I've left L.A. for a bit.

Trust me on this one. Grub rocks. :)

5 Stars: Friendly, warm service and excellent food. (by Chris P)

I work in Hollywood in production and this is one of my regular lunch spots. It's a great place to bring clients. It's not as stuffy as Ammo and the food is better than the Corner. It's fun and friendly and a waiter the other day noticed that I got a new hat. They really seem to care about service and food. And now they have parking down the block...

5 Stars: Well Worth The Drive Across Town (by SueAnnJaffarian)

Grub has now become my fav spot, even if I have to fight traffic from the West Side to get there. And I've introduced many friends to it. I've had brunch there twice. The french toast was great if you like sweets for breakfast, but I adored the egg scramble with cheese, tomatoes and chunks of their special "sweet and sassy" bacon. The bacon was sweet and sassy and amazing. Had their truffle mac 'n cheese for dinner. It was fabulous. Portions are good size, prices reasonable, menu very interesting take on comfort food.

The acoustics in the dining room can cause it to be very noisy. It's actually quieter outside on the patio.

5 Stars: I love Grub! (by Diana H.)

My favorite is the "Crack" bacon burger, it's dripping with BBQ sauce and the bacon is nice and thick!
I've been here for lunch on weekdays and never had to wait on a table, the staff is very nice.

5 Stars: Wonderful from start to finish! (by apanicara)

We just had Sunday Brunch at Grub and were pleased with, well everything! We had to wait maybe 5 minutes for a table (on a Sunday at 1pm.) The host was so friendly, as was our server. The food came out surprisingly quick and it was delicious! We can't wait to go back for dinner and experience the adorable patio at night!

2 Stars: Sub-par service, slightly above average food, pricey cofee, dicey neighborhood. (by engeo)

Went for breakfast on Sunday morning. Waited about 10 minutes for a waiter after being seated, and the restuarant had approximately 40% empty tables (i.e. not overly busy). No one asked if we wanted coffee, whch should be an immediate question for a weekend breakfast waiter. After finally ordering, the waiter had to come back (about 5 minutes later) to verify the food order, because he did not write the order down the first time. After ordering, food came relatively quickly (a plus) and was hot (also a plus). Overall: food-3 stars out of 5; service-2 stars out of 5. The wait staff needs a few lessons in customer service. I will not return.

5 Stars: The best grub in So-Cal! (by CraigHolly)

If you are looking for fanciness and a stuck-up atmosphere, this place is not for you. No "pasta a la marinara" or any other weird sounding names. Grub basically sticks to an' All-American' menu but raises it up several notches . I have been to this neighborhood haven several times and I must admit that most of the food is tasty without that artificial taste that comes from prepackaged ingredients. Grub's most outstanding plate on the menu are their famous Friggin' Amazing Croissant French Toast. They are covered in a delicious batter with every single ingredient is a perfect amount; the toast basically melts in your mouth and you can't help but to feel sad they are gone. Of course they were only the appetizer, since our main entree was only waiting for us. I asked for the BBQ sandwich and my friend asked for the Afterschool Special sandwich. Both were delicious and went beyond to what we expected. The BBQ sandwich was specially different, with a tartness that separates the usual sweet bottled condiment to a totally different one that Grub made theirs. The tomato soup was creamy and simply too good for words. I have to say that I have never been disappointed with the food at this restaurant. Equally, the service was efficient and with a reasonable waiting time on the food. We had several refills throughout our long visit the last time, and we simply felt well taken care of. The place gets full during brunch on the weekends, so arrive early to avoid the let-down of a long wait time for a table. Simply a cute little place with excellent food. - An added bonus is that Mrs. Fraser is a sassy former contestant on Top Chef!

5 Stars: A "Top Chef" in our Heart! (by chefstar)

When we found out that Betty - a contestant on Top Chef - had a place right here in town. We made plans to go and experience it. Little did we know so did allot of other people! But, no matter. We waited patiently in the outside area and spoke with many of the other guests. Betty would come out and say her hellos and chat with anyone who had a question or just wanted to say hi. Pet friendly - the little and a few big dogs were here and there outside. After we were seated, the service and food was wonderful. Timing was just right - even though the kitchen and staff felt they took a bit too long. After we told them we didn't mind and were enjoying the whole visit - we got fresh homemade "Thank You" cookies sent to our table after our meal. Prices are good. Atmosphere is just right and the place is not too big to feel lost or forgotten. We will definitely be back!

4 Stars: great spinach scramble (by kittyspeaks1)

This was my first time at Grub. The food was very good, service was spotty but our nice waitress was overwhelmed since she was the only one working the outside tables on Father's Day! Our order was misplaced, and we waited way too long for it, (over 45 minutes for eggs that take 5 minutes to cook!!) but once it came, the food won me over. I had the spinach mushroom gruyere scramble and it was heaven. the home fried potatoes were perfectly seasoned, but my toasted english muffin was cold when served with the rest of my hot meal. They should have had extra wait staff on Sunday/Father's Day. They should have these kinks worked out by now; where was the owner/chef/top chef contestant? Resting on her laurels? the staff was so nice but clearly over worked-- and therefore the service greatly suffered. This could be my favorite place for brunch if they stepped up the service.

3 Stars: Frankly it's somewhat overrated (by alvster1)

As "cute" as this restaurant is, I think it's a bit overrated. Maybe people like it because it's basically a little house-turned-restaurant. Big deal. I ordered the french toast croissants and they gave me three soggy halves ? for 10 bucks they could at least add the fourth half. Every time someone walked by, my table shook as well. The taste of the food was good and the coffee excellent, but nothing extra-ordinary.

2 Stars: Really Unimpressive (by bowersmt)

After reading Citysearch's plentiful, positive reviews on "Grub," my wife and I stopped by this neighborhood restaurant. It was awful.

The server was unable to answer any questions about the dishes on the menu. My wife ordered a seemingly simple breakfast of eggs-over-easy and strawberries. The whites of the eggs were uncooked/snotty and half of her strawberries were badly bruised.

My salad was very close to something that I could have picked up at Pavilion's in the deli aisle (for half the price, mind you). Either we didn't pick the right dishes or this place is highly and ridiculously overrated.

3 Stars: Average is exactly what it is. (by yokoq)

Two stars for atmosphere and the nice guy in the front of the restaurant who does the seating. I give it another star for the food, which was OK, but not great. They put a small plate of crudites on your table which is nice; the vegetables were old which wasn't nice. I ordered a turkey sandwich which was about 8 inches high with processed turkey, thickly sliced (old) cucumbers, cold brie, etc. The idea was good; the execution lousy. I had to toss the roll to eat the sandwich. My friend ordered a hamburger and I think what they do is just saute ground meat (well done) and then put it on a bun. That wasn't bad but it wasn't a hamburger. When I asked why they couldn't cook it medium she said for health reasons. I don't think so. Anyway, I would go back believe it or not and order a salad because they looked good. But stay away from the sandwiches. Atmosphere is great. Service was good enough.

4 Stars: Great brunch spot (by Michael K.)

Kind of a hidden (but not very well) gem tucked away in Hollywood. Great french toast, friendly service, and amazing desserts. The wait can be a little long on weekends, particularly when it's nice out. But if you get there early (10-ish or so), it's not that bad.

5 Stars: Grub is the absolute best (by Foodalicious)

I recently found Grub because I saw it voted for the best morning after brunch spot...oh, my God!!!! This place is like a dream come true. I came early with some friends on a Sunday morning and we had the best time! The servers and the hostess were so wonderful. We sat down to a cup of the best coffee I've tasted in this city (the manager even let us buy some-I guess they ship it in from San Francisco-it rocks!). Then the four of us each ordered something different and everything was amazing (even the Brie!!! ; )
I think this place is an absolute find. It's very charming and it looks like it's going to be opening up for dinner soon too. I'm planning on going back and bringing more friends for lunch during the week. Seriously, this place is different than any place I've found in LA...plain and simple, it's special and delicious!
P.S. Whatever you do, you HAVE to try the BACON!

1 Stars: Are You Kidding? (by mackellanpatrick)

The service is friendly, upbeat, informal, and "neighborhoody," yet I cannot see how this place is on top of anyone's list. Zagat's is misleading: not a residential street, but rather a row of production-related industrial and warehouse buildings. Funky and fun in itself, but not cozy and cottagey. The small shotgun-style main room is a not particularly well-done 1990's style-redo of an old Bungalow, complete with industry related old posters and other moderate, unoffensive, and cheap decor. The tables are not well-placed and the chairs are not comfortable. The food? I had an omelette with brie, mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach. How brie could be tasteless is not something I can understand. Either not fresh ingredients or else the Saturday morning cook was new or just not their best. The prices are high for the location and lack of quality. For example, coffee is $2.75 (no espresso drinks available) -- yet watery and meaningless. 7-Eleven coffee is better. Pre-processed jam is delivered to the table in those tiny little institutional packages that a cafeteria would use. Perhaps Grub is living off an old reputation, or perhaps it's simply a haven for people who enjoy averageness. Giving people a solid value and a thoughtful experience should be important in any business, even a breakfast place. The "Grub Gals" aren't doing that.

5 Stars: Favorite Place for Breakfast or Lunch (by keyframegirl)

Grub never goes wrong, either with a single friend or a group of people the service is always extra friendly and the food fantastic. From their creative twists on French toast to grilled cheese, to a white truffle hamburger you can't go wrong!! It's food to make your belly happy and add a smile to your face.

Their location is tucked back in Hollywood, but makes you feel like you are at a cottage far away from the city. It is one of my favorite places to eat!!

5 Stars: Eat here for cozy atmosphere, excellent food, and caring staff (by cvperry)

My girlfriend and I love this place, both for brunch on the weekends and weekday lunch. Nestled in a part of Hollywood oddly rife with film vaults, this homey little restaurant is a welcome respite from Los Angeles' oft-unappealing urban-ness. The menu consists of creative comfort food--from 'sweet and sassy thick cut bacon' to truffle burgers--and the kind staff makes sure that your table begins the meal with either a bowl of fruitloops or a plate of legumes and ranch dip.

This morning, we arrived early for brunch--around 9 am, when it opens--looking forward to another great dining experience. For some reason, the staff were just having a bad day. One waitress spilled coffee, another slipped in it ten minutes later, and the manager bumped into the computer, erasing many of the orders put in to the chef. Our order was lost, and we waited for twenty minutes before the error was noticed. These things happen, from time to time, to every restaurant; it is how it is dealt with that shows the character of the place. When the manager of Grub was notified that we had been waiting for more than half an hour for our food, she personally came to our table, apologized profusely and sincerely and offered to pay for our meal--which came out shortly thereafter. We were positively charmed! Of course, the food was delightful.

We'll certainly be coming back to Grub! Please enjoy this lovely gem.

A group of us checked out Grub the other day when we were in the neighborhood. We were quickly greeted by the chef/owner, Betty, who some of you will recognize from Top Chef! She was full of life and friendly... and very helpful with suggestions. We liked the casual atmosphere (we sat on the outside patio). I had the beet salad ("Beet's the Alternative Salad") and really enjoyed it. Delicious flavor combo... and loved the spiced pecans.

5 Stars: Sweet Sunday Breakfast (by eschuman)

As a frequent "Griddle" customer, I was craving a more subdued breakfast ambiance that felt more like a little country nook than bustling cafeteria. After reading other reviews, I decided to arrive on the early side and found it easy to park a few streets away and nabbed a lovely outdoor table. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful with the difficult decisions I was forced to make due to the overwhelmingly appealing menu. I decided on the egg sandwich, which consisted of a perfectly toasted croissant with dill butter and fluffy eggs. The whole experience lended to a lovely Sunday morning breakfast and I will definitely be returning to try the famous french toast .

4 Stars: Cute place... decent food (by namster)

I love this place for the atmosphere. It's a cute little cottage with outdoor seating available in a garden-like patio. The food is generally pretty good, but I wouldn't say it's as awesome as most of the reviews relay. The croissant french toast is well complemented by the raspberry butter, however the batter doesn't seem to be as flavorful as it could be. The bacon is good but a little too sticky... my sister has a simple and similar recipe for baking bacon in the oven with brown sugar sprinkled on top, and it's a lot better than the bacon at this restaurant. The breakfast potatoes are nothing spectacular, and half of mine were actually undercooked. The ginger ale is refreshingly light, but unappealing to those who prefer the stronger and sweeter tasting ginger ale. I was hoping we would be served a bowl of captain crunch and fruit loops, but alas, it was captain crunch berries and apple jacks.. hehe. All in all, Grub is a great brunch place. The food could be a little better, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

5 Stars: Absolutely amazing food and very cute atmosphere! (by hiella)

I went here for Sunday breakfast right when it opened and I have to say that this is without a doubt the best breakfast I have had in L.A., if not ever. It is a very cute little house/garden dining area that feels very warm and homey. The service, though somewhat slow, is very friendly. I had the french toast, which was perfectly sweet and delicious with the raspberry butter. My friend, who hates all things breakfast, even loved it and had a piece... it is huge! The bacon was also delicious, though I don't think its for everyone because it is carmelized and has hints of rosemary. I loved it though, as did my friend. My friend ordered the breakfast burrito and it had great depth of flavor. It is was spicy, but not too spicy, and just overall very flavorful. I thought that it was cute that they put a bowl of fruit loops on the table, and it definitely helped since the food takes a while. But it is definitely worth the wait! Enjoy!

Had a friend in from out of town and was going to be in West LA area. Wanted a fun lunch spot. Due to the reviews, chose this one. What a find! The toasted cheese and tomatoe soup was to die for. Everything we saw come out of the kitchen we wanted. Sat outside. Glorious. Parking is a pain but worth it. Go early. Service was great. My friend, a real foodie from Seattle loved it as well. Try it!

5 Stars: Great comfort food (by dkstrat)

I can't believe that nasty review below. It's totally bogus. I love to eat at Grub. Its serves the best comfort food in Los Angeles -- just try the Afterschool Special (grilled cheese sandwich/tomato soup combo) and you'll be hooked! . The food is consistently great, the atmosphere is fun, and the service is friendly. I took my sister and her family there for brunch Easter Sunday and it was a homerun. While I didn't see any Cherrio's on the table, they did put out a dish of Fruit Loops, which the kids ate right up. Meanwhile, I had French Toast with some kind of rasberry butter and bacon that must have been fried in maple syrup. I LOVED IT!!!

5 Stars: Great Food, Great Service and a real happy place (by banjovial)

This is the first time I've ever written any type of a comment on a public forum but after reading the most recent "review," I felt I had to respond. I have had the pleasure of eating at Grub many times and have never been disappointed. I've also recommended the restaurant to many friends and have not heard one negative comment. For me, not only has the food always been really tasty but the service has never been anything less than exceptional. As a former restaurant manager myself, I've often wondered what the owners have done to create such a great work environment as the servers always seem to be smiling. I've also had the BBQ sandwich that was mentioned and my initial thought was how they were able to get away with providing so much beef for the cost. And I'm sorry but the homemade ginger ale is a winner in addition to being very hard to find anywhere else. And they must be doing something right as another restaurant recently expanded into a location near Grub and it appears they stole something right off the menu because I remember having the same dish with the same name at Grub years ago! Look, if you want fine dining there are a ton of restaurants in L.A. that will take your reservation, make you feel inferior for even daring to eat there and then bilk you with a huge bill. But if you want fresh, tasty food served with a smile in an atmosphere that makes you feel like your in someone's very cool house, then Grub is your place.

1 Stars: your kidding, right? (by silvertonguedpalette)

I can think of plenty of other 4-letter words to call this place, but GRUB isn't one of them. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had, accompanied by equally bad service. The homemade gingerale rimmed with sugar sounds refreshing, but tasted like something that could remove soap-scum from the shower - a high chemical taste. Not even adding the sugar from the rim helped this one. I ordered the bar-b-que beef sandwich with coleslaw and chips. This was a disaster. The coleslaw (which was maybe a tablespoon full, and that's being generous) was placed on the open-faced bun with even more mayo. On top of that was a few spoonfuls of shredded beef, drowning in sauce. The "chips" were nothing more than your standard ridged potato chips with a dash of pepper. My friend ordered an omelette with cheese, which was surprisingly missing that last ingredient. Her english muffins arrived AFTER she was finished with her meal, and we had to ask - twice - for a coffee refill. Oh, and did I mention the Honey-nut Cheerios in a finger-bowl as an appetizer? Please. If that's your idea of creativity, you seriously need to return to culinary school.

This place is such a great find! This place got a real friendly staff especially the owner who even came out and gave coffee for us who were waiting for a table still. I ordered the french toast with a side of their maple bacon. Man that was so good. The bacon was sweet and had a nice spice kick to it. The french toast was served with a yummy raspberry butter that made it oh so much better. The atmosphere was very home-like and made ya just feel comforted. Great way to spend your morning. Can't wait to go back and try out the rest of their menu.

3 Stars: Long wait, bad service (by lbcrill)

Grub was highly recommended so I decided to go on a Sunday afternoon. The wait was long and the host was pleasant. Once seated, it took WAY too long for our food to arrive. I ordered a cold sandwich and my friend had eggs and oatmeal. And we were waiting over 45 minutes. The service was absolutely terrible. Our waitress asked for our drinks in the beginning and to doggy-bag our leftovers at the end only after someone else did. And the worst was after our food arrived, she came to our table to ask how everything was and without stopping for an answer turned away and kept walking. Extremely rude. Then a table close by needed sugar and another waiter came to our table, and grabbed our sugar while saying ?You guys don?t need this, do you?? What?! The bussers were the best though. He saw, replaced our sugar, was on top of refills and was the best thing about this restaurant. Not going back.

5 Stars: yummy and homey (by cfriday)

French toast! Get it! The wait - if there is one - is never very long, despite how small this place is and how busy it can get. Parking is a bit rough, just be prepared to walk a little. The house is adorable, and the garden perfect. Inside it gets very noisy with the wood floors and bare walls and everyone talking - the patio is much more pleasant when it is warm enough.
All the food is yummy and the service is great. It is a very comfortable place.

4 Stars: What's not to love?! (by bette1stl)

I was taken out to a surprise lunch today. I was told I'd never been there and that I was going to like it. As we got off the 101 freeway, I went over the possibilities of nearby places I'd never been...Off Vine, Grub, Pizzeria Mozza... To my delight, we pulled up to Grub. After easily finding a parking spot, I giddily yelped my excitment, as I've been even MORE eager to try the place since watching Betty on Top Chef. My girlfriend didn't ever put two and two together, so when Betty came to take our orders, she was surprised, and I was delighted. However, before she came someone else brought our drinks (which were gigantic and came in huge, cute, colored plastic glasses) which were tasty and later attentively refilled. Betty honestly couldn't have been lovlier. She wore a big smile and didn't hesistate to both answer our questions about the show, and answer *my* questions about the menu! Like a good doctor, she patiently answered my questions and looked quite happy to be there, never showing me even a hint that she had to run off to the bustling kitchen. Famous for comfort food, the guy at the table next to us was rocking the mac and cheese (which looked huge and yummy), and the tomato soup and grilled cheese called my name, but I ended up ordering a burger. The burger came perfectly cooked, and the spring roll appetizer (the vietnamese version, not fried), was fantastic. I can't wait to return for their comfort food. For you foodies, I'd say the fare isn't as gourmet as Doughboys, but isn't as diner as The Griddle. Get it? And frankly, I'd come back just because the service was so spectacular. I'd even go as far as saying that it was the best service I have ever had in a place that costs less than $100 per person. All in all, a wonderful surprise, great lunch, and thrilling to see Betty. We'll be back!

5 Stars: Superior comfort food. (by emelita)

Admittedly, after watching Top Chef and working right around the corner from Grub, I just had to check it out. I am so glad I did! My co-workers are equally as pleased that I ventured out and tried this spot and then dragged each and every one of them along. Here are a list of praises that are deserved:
1. Tomato soup - OMG! This soup...this elixir of goodness...I had a friend who hated tomato soup until...you guessed it, until she tried THIS tomato soup - oh its divine. I crave it on a weekly basis. Heavenly is the only word to describe it.
2. Now couple the soup with the best damn grilled cheese and you're transported back to your childhood selves - even if, like me, you didn't grow up eating tomato soup and grilled cheese - you'll end up getting transported to some kid's 5-yr-old soup and sandwich experience...seriously, this rocks.
3. Brunch - the bacon. If nothing else, come eat the bacon. Seriously.
4. French Toast - lovely and pink! Until you have it, you won't understand. Very tasty and complemented nicely by the bacon.
5. Did I mention the bacon?

I have many things left to try on the menu and I'm hard-pressed to stray from the things I'm obsessing over right now, but Iet me tell you, each time I've tried something new, thus far, has proven to be amazing.

The locale - this is the cutest little bungalow I've been to in a long time. Unless you know its there, you're likely to drive right by without noticing. I think its location is perfect. I've gone during lunchtime and I've always found a place to sit.

Overall, this is one of my favorite joints in L.A. I'm glad I made it in and would recommend this place, hands down.

5 Stars: Discovered the "Off-Times" are the BEST Times! (by chipmanley)

I've been here on lots, usually after 12:30 and found a bustling, friendly restaurant. But when I found an early lunch meeting inthe area canceled, I decided to grab a bite by myself. It was 11:30 and the place was only half full. My meal came out within 5 minutes (fresh, hot and tasty as always!). Best part was the owners and staff were running around, talking to everyone, having fun. I just read in Zagat's that this is one of the best places to eat alone and I can see why. One table even ordered that Big @#$% Ice Cream Sandwich (a chocolate chip cookie with Vanilla-Strawberry-chocolate Ice Creams). Their eyes bulged when they saw it so you know what they did? They passed pieces of it around to the rest of us. Did the owner resist, thinking of reduced dessert sales? Nope! she ran to the kitchen and got us small plates and forks. I hear one of them is on Top Chef. Haven't caught the show yet but no one deserves it more!

Ordered the french toast and my boyfriend ordered the 3 egg special with a side of bacon. The bacon was savory, sweet and crisp..done to perfection! The potatoes were great, that came with the eggs, although I think the eggs were a lil over cooked (asked for over easy, yolks were too firm and eggs were somewhat tough). Would definitely go back! Also, the owner walked over to each table , greeted everyone and had lengthy conversations with all. Definite plus!

Wife and I went to lunch on Sunday. I could have found this menu at Denny's. Very mediocre. Wife got a Hooked, suped up tuna sandwich for $10 and I got a mediocre spinach salad for $10. Food was average if that. The $2.00 Homemade ginger ale was small with no refills, really hurts on a hot day. Wait staff was late and poor on everything. Only saving grace was the seat by the window

5 Stars: Best Cheesy Steak (by quiettristan)

If you drive down seward you just might miss it, its a small joint thats very busy during lunch, alot of hollywood busy bodys eat there. As for the menu my favorite items would be the croissant french toast for breakfast and the hollywood cheesy steaks for lunch.
Parking is ok there is a lot up the street that has a few reserved spots for grub customers.
friendly service and a nice homely feel is what you get when dining at grub.

5 Stars: Best Bacon I've EVER had! (by tonylippera)

Server was telling me they keep adding bacon items here because it is so good! Demand is cracy for it (and I take it not so easy to make, or replicate!) Bacon omlettes, BLT's on cheese rolls, Bacon on incredible Curry & Mango Egg Salad, Bacon on the Brie & Veggie Baguette. I swear, I sound crazy but it is that good (and worth having a little pork for!) When I can break from the bacon urge, I've had a sweet chicken salad (which has a similar sweetness-with-a-kick taste of the bacon!), buffalo wing-salad, Something called the Afterschool Special--grilled cheese with tomato soup (funny, this item popped up on the equally-good Doughboys menu this year under the SAME NAME! Shame on you! lol) Then, I had this homemade ginger ale that I'm told is also good with hot or iced tea. When I get my annual summer cold, I'm ordering it!

4 Stars: Very good brunch, but somewhat overrated. (by jofutt)

I enjoyed my meal at Grub, but didn't find it to be the sublime experience many others do. The room is small cramped and noisy and the crowd has a typical Hollywood arrogance that I try to get away from in these types of joints. Food was yummy, but no more so than Griddle Cafe, John O'Groats or Doughboys.

5 Stars: Good Eats!!!! Bad Service no refills (by katecrowe20)

I took my boyfriend to Grub after reading reviews. I was impressed with how easy it was to find and what a cute place it was. The parking was not bad we went after noon, but i can imagine in the morning for breakfast it could be hell. The service was not great after we had our cokes (that do not include free refills) we wanted water nobody ever came back to check with us to see how we were doing, and we were so thirsty!!! The food was wonderfull, took a little while to get it but i expected that because it is such a small and independent place. The food was really really good for the price we paid. The bacon was to DIE FOR!!! I would def. go back again and ask for water right away and skip the sodas that are not a good value.

The food is great, the ambience is homey in the way I wish my grandmother had kept her house, and the service is very friendly. Make sure you have the bacon (as many other have said) with your breakfast, and the Sweet and Spicy Bird salad is one of the best I've ever had.

5 Stars: DONT EAT HERE, ITS MINE! (by avidan)

Ok, fine, you are welcome to eat here occasionally, but don't get too comfortable...
At Grub, butter is good, bacon cooked in brown sugar and fennel is even better. As a foodie, here are my recommendations.
For brunch: Croissant french toast, Blueberry ginger-candied-granola pancakes, and the breakfast burrito (which my girlfriend swears is best in LA). And of course, with anything you order, get a side of bacon, trust me...I call it "candy meat".
For lunch: my top choices are the bbq beef sandwich, hooked (tuna-melt), sweet n' spicy bird salad - pecan crusted chicken, and the afterschool special - grilled cheese and CREAMY tomato soup.
As you can probably tell, I am quite a regular at Grub, and will continue. The fact that all the wait-staff and the owners Betty and Denise are the sweetest restauranteurs ever is icing on the cake (although i prefer their apple crumble ala-mode).

2 Stars: Why the hype? (by ianfidel)

I had lunch at Grub yesterday, and while the restaurant itself was charming and the service was good, the food was downright mediocre. The french onion soup was flavorless, the veggie burger was soggy and greasy on bland bread, and the portions were unimpressive. I was expecting something along the lines of Doughboys, but was terribly disappointed with the quality of the food. The lone high point was the homemade ginger ale, but at $2.75, they should offer at least one refill. I won't be going back.

5 Stars: BEST Breakfast/GREAT Vibe (by swbbrooks)

Wow! The bacon is incredible. Can't get enough. Tastes like when pancake syrup runs into your sausage (but not in that fake-McGriddle kind of way--lol). Work nearby--this place is often jammed, especially on weekends after 11. BUT I've found I can get in and out ASAP with a great breakfast anytime (8-10ish) and lunch (11-12:30ish, seems to fill up after 1). Busy or empty--the vibe here is decidedly NOT-L.A. You know the hometown places you miss from everywhere BUT LA? Well, the ladies have created a respite in the vapidness that CAN often be LA, if you buy into all that. They don't here, and you don't have to either. (Plus my boyfriend can bring his dog!)

5 Stars: Get your grub on! (by shana51)

There's no place like home...and Grub is home. When you want some great comfort food in a nice homey setting, Grub is the place. With such lunch delicacies like the "afterschool special", a grilled cheese and the most amazing creamy tomato soup you've ever had; and such breakfast specialties like their croissant french toast, scrumptious bacon, and egg scrambles that fall off the plate-- you can't go wrong!

Dog lovers also have place at Grub. The patio, equipped with water dishes for doggies, is a great place for both canine friends as well as their owners. So go...get your Grub on!

I have been going to Grub since Bette and Denise opened this charming place and I have never been disappointed. The food is fantastic and I live for the bacon!!!! I've told everyone I know about Grub, and now they are all regulars too. Brunch is great and now that I work down the block I have lunch there too! The after school special is yummy and so is the Mount Olympus! This place is truly one of the best neighborhood restaurants ever. Visit Grub once, chat with the staff and you will always be remembered each time you go in. It's like going over to your best friend/neighbor's house and hanging out in the kitchen. Run to Grub you will LOVE it!

Walk in and immediately feel at home, definitely not a normal thing in LA. Everyone who works there seems to be having a geat time, and you can taste the happiness in the food. If you haven't been there for breakfast, you're missing out on the best bacon in town. Run don't walk to Grub!!

5 Stars: Great Spot (by wefunk977)

This place is great! You get there, plenty of parking, there are flowers everywhere. The outdoor dining feels like a backyard and the indoor dining feels like a living room. The menu has numerous tasteful jokes about the food in the descriptions and is chalked full of tempting options. The only hard part is deciding what to get. The staff are both kind and attractive and treat you like relitives(in a good way). This is a great place to go and relax and escape the day.

2 Stars: The experience wasn't that great. (by ccl)

We have been trying to go to this place for a few month now. So this past Thursday we went for lunch and it was nothing I had in mind. After reading most of the reviews on this site I thought it would be pretty good. But the service was bad, the server was trying to rush us out of there, we didn't have anytime to look at the menu, so finally I told him, it's our first time here so we are going to need more time to decide. Then came the food that was a big disappointment. My onion soup had only a couple of pieces of onions. The carnitas wrap was so average that a Taquaria would have been a better choice. I was not pleased at all with the restuarant and definetly will not go back again.

1 Stars: I really wanted to love it... (by toroneg)

I went to Grub for breakfast today for my birthday. I loved the place as soon as I walked in--you walk under an arch covered with morning glories to get to the patio seating area, which was very cute--many interesting and colorful plants. No outside tables were available, so we sat inside. My BF and I both ordered pancakes. They were SMALL--I mean tiny. About 1/4 inch thick (which was fine--I prefer my pancakes thin and crepe-y rather than thick and cake-y), but there were 3 of them, and they were about as big around as a small grapefruit! And then, the CARDINAL sin...the "maple syrup" was MAPLE FLAVORED CORN SYRUP! I ordered pancakes because the menu described them as coming with maple syrup...at IHOP or DENNY'S, I would have asked "REAL maple syrup?", but this seemed like the kind of place that would know the difference. Very disappointed.

4 Stars: Great breakfast (by Jenny S.)

Grub is a little bit hard to find, it's not on a major street, which is great because it doesn't have the huge crowds on the weekends that other popular breakfast places in LA have. The restaurant is very cozy. It's a converted cottage, so you almost feel like you're dining in someone's house. Breakfast/brunch is great, and the menu has some creative options. Lots of celebs seem to eat here.

We were tourists looking for something NOT about finding stars to see, just wanting a great breakfast. Grub has great Food with a wonderful twist, location is easy to find although off the main roads which is super because the patio outdoor area is beautiful AND quiet.
5 Stars: We Love LA...and Grub too (by marykateandashley27)

I brought my roommate and boyfriend to Grub for the first time. Our waiter asked us if we had been there before. Because there were two new people with me he told us all his favorite stuff. He even told us one thing he didn't like...it was surprising but funny. All of us took his recommendations. My roommate and I got the grilled cheese with tomato soup. It was amazing as always!!! My boyfriend got a bbq beef sandwich which was awesome. The blueberry lemonade is great too! At the end of the meal our waiter asked us if we wanted a "giant ass" ice cream sandwich. We had a small one and it was really good. I will go back to Grub again and again. The service is always great. This is my favorite new restaurant and anyone who doesn't like it is crazy! Thanks.

5 Stars: you must go !!!!! (by tallybarr)

great everything- coming into Grub and being greeted by Bette and Denise (owners) is a little slice of goodness- open arms and a smile- why do'nt htey open for dinner? Ideal for industry lunch meetings (good celebrity spotting too), or a meal with family or friends. they cater too!

5 Stars: Congratulations to Grub (by tf9006888)

I was so glad to see Grub finish in the number three spot in the recent CitySearch poll for Best Lunch Spot. I have had the pleasure of eating there numerous times and have always been very impressed with the exceptional quality of service, food and general good feeling of the restaurant. To see a new restaurant that is so obviously concerned with their guests experience place so highly in the poll against the larger, chain restaurants proves to me that the "human touch" is very appreciated by L.A. diners. Kudos to Grub and if you haven't yet experienced this restaurant, I strongly recommend that you do so soon.

5 Stars: One of my L.A. favorites (by lililadaga_citysearch)

This one of my favorite lunch spots. Located in a renovated house, it's cozy, warm and feels light-years away from the L.A. "scene." The After School Special--grilled cheese oozing several types of rich cheeses and a small bowl of tomato sleep--is delicious and soothing. The Hot Chicks salad is hot chunks of buffalo-spiced of white chicken meat on romaine with red onion slices, blue cheese crumbles, carrot shavings and ranch dressing and is mouthwateringly amazing. The patio is a nice place to sit; inside is cute, but with the wood floors and a crowd, it can get overwhelmingly loud. The sandwiches are huge and tasty.

5 Stars: Good Food, Cute Place (by foodielicious)

We had lunch late in the afternoon just before Grub closed so we were seated right away. The tuna melt was the best I have ever tasted with peppers and a pesto sauce. The bread was crispy but not greasy. The steak salad came with ample slices of meat and was very tasty. The place is very cute with a whimsical and ecletic feel to it. My only disappointment was the blueberry lemonade that tasted like "lemonade." Parking was easy to find a few doors down on the street.

4 Stars: go Saturday morning--no crowd (by noelio)

I visited Grub based upon the recommendation of other citysearch reviewers. One of the themes of previous reviews was that this restaurant was too crowded. I, however, went on a Saturday morning. There was no crowd at all. The residential neighborhood was very peaceful without the hub-bub of week day traffic. I enjoyed the cinnamon french toast. My one-year-old played happily at the table with my wife and I. The interior of the restaurant is really an old house remodeled to become one large dining room. We found that pleasant, like you were at home away from home. So, come in on a Saturday morning if you want a peaceful, easy, and enjoyable time.

5 Stars: little piece of heaven (by paddyduece)

Ok, so if your sick of the LA lunch scene, want good food, and not pay an arm and a leg.... this is the place. Sit outside, chill, and immediately forget what city you're in. Go for the goat cheese salad w/ chicken or "the after school special". What a little diamond in the rough.

5 Stars: Friendliest Place in Hollywood (by farwestkid)

I recently went to Grub a few weeks ago and fell in love with the place. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is great! Our food took about ten minutes to get to the table from the time that we ordered. We had hardly noticed this fact until one of the staff came over and appologized for the wait. She brought us free desert and cookies in baggies for our hike that day. I go to this place whenever I get a chance. The decor is very welcoming and homey. I feel like I'm at a friend's house. I highly recommend this place!

5 Stars: What a Treat! (by stefankalinka)

Went to Grub yesterday for lunch and loved it! Who would have thought there was such a great little place hidden in Hollywood's post-production area? My lunch date and I were given a wonderful basket of veges as soon as we sat down and we proceeded to order spring rolls with an amazing peanut sauce along with our BBQ beef and Sloppy Joe sandwiches. The owner Betty was delightful and a pleasure to speak with and our server Susan was a hoot! This is an establishment that cares about their product and their patrons. I'm looking forward to becoming a regular of this fun , comfortable lunch spot. Give Grub a try. You'll be happy you did.
