Our dream was to open a special restaurant that felt like home. A place for our guests to relax, leave the pressure of the day at the door and enjoy some great food, good company and warm surroundings. Our specialty is California Comfort food and includes such popular items as our After School Special, (this one is the Original!)which is Cheddar and Swiss Cheeses grilled to melting on our tangy sliced Sourdough served with a cup of our Creamy Tomato Soup and for dessert our famous Big Ass Ice Cream Sandwich is guaranteed to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. The weekend finds Grub filled to the brim with capacity crowds enjoying such items as our Friggin' Amazing French Toast, Mamacita's Breakfast Burrito and our specially brewed coffee that promises to provide a jolt to cure whatever ails 'ya. We look forward to having you join us! The Grub Gals~Betty & Denise
Grub is a little bit hard to find, it's not on a major street, which is great because it doesn't have the huge crowds on the weekends that other popular breakfast places in LA have. The restaurant is very cozy. It's a converted cottage, so you almost feel like you're dining in someone's house. Breakfast/brunch is great, and the menu has some creative options. Lots of celebs seem to eat here.

Where do I start? They have a continental theme going here. I have been in love with the Mt. Olympus lately, hummus, feta and pita triangles. YUM!
They've got Carribbean, spanish, American, etc. If you can't find something here, you're crazy. I always leave with a smile on my face, rubbing my belly.
PROS: Good, good, good
CONS:

Ok, fine, you are welcome to eat here occasionally, but don't get too comfortable...
At Grub, butter is good, bacon cooked in brown sugar and fennel is even better. As a foodie, here are my recommendations.
For brunch: Croissant french toast, Blueberry ginger-candied-granola pancakes, and the breakfast burrito (which my girlfriend swears is best in LA). And of course, with anything you order, get a side of bacon, trust me...I call it "candy meat".
For lunch: my top choices are the bbq beef sandwich, hooked (tuna-melt), sweet n' spicy bird salad - pecan crusted chicken, and the afterschool special - grilled cheese and CREAMY tomato soup.
As you can probably tell, I am quite a regular at Grub, and will continue. The fact that all the wait-staff and the owners Betty and Denise are the sweetest restauranteurs ever is icing on the cake (although i prefer their apple crumble ala-mode).
Pros: FOOD, FOOD, FOOD
Cons: No dinner

I had lunch at Grub yesterday, and while the restaurant itself was charming and the service was good, the food was downright mediocre. The french onion soup was flavorless, the veggie burger was soggy and greasy on bland bread, and the portions were unimpressive. I was expecting something along the lines of Doughboys, but was terribly disappointed with the quality of the food. The lone high point was the homemade ginger ale, but at $2.75, they should offer at least one refill. I won't be going back.
Pros: Ambiance, Varied menu
Cons: Food quality, Value, Few veggie options

Wow! The bacon is incredible. Can't get enough. Tastes like when pancake syrup runs into your sausage (but not in that fake-McGriddle kind of way--lol). Work nearby--this place is often jammed, especially on weekends after 11. BUT I've found I can get in and out ASAP with a great breakfast anytime (8-10ish) and lunch (11-12:30ish, seems to fill up after 1). Busy or empty--the vibe here is decidedly NOT-L.A. You know the hometown places you miss from everywhere BUT LA? Well, the ladies have created a respite in the vapidness that CAN often be LA, if you buy into all that. They don't here, and you don't have to either. (Plus my boyfriend can bring his dog!)
Pros: Dogs/Biscuits, Friendly staff, Bacon
Cons: Busy after 1pm

There's no place like home...and Grub is home. When you want some great comfort food in a nice homey setting, Grub is the place. With such lunch delicacies like the "afterschool special", a grilled cheese and the most amazing creamy tomato soup you've ever had; and such breakfast specialties like their croissant french toast, scrumptious bacon, and egg scrambles that fall off the plate-- you can't go wrong!
Dog lovers also have place at Grub. The patio, equipped with water dishes for doggies, is a great place for both canine friends as well as their owners. So go...get your Grub on!

I have been going to Grub since Bette and Denise opened this charming place and I have never been disappointed. The food is fantastic and I live for the bacon!!!! I've told everyone I know about Grub, and now they are all regulars too. Brunch is great and now that I work down the block I have lunch there too! The after school special is yummy and so is the Mount Olympus! This place is truly one of the best neighborhood restaurants ever. Visit Grub once, chat with the staff and you will always be remembered each time you go in. It's like going over to your best friend/neighbor's house and hanging out in the kitchen. Run to Grub you will LOVE it!
Pros: Friendly Staff, Great Food, Inexpensive

how do I love Grub? Let me count the ways...Oh wait, I can't, there are way too many!!
Walk in and immediately feel at home, definitely not a normal thing in LA. Everyone who works there seems to be having a geat time, and you can taste the happiness in the food. If you haven't been there for breakfast, you're missing out on the best bacon in town. Run don't walk to Grub!!

This place is great! You get there, plenty of parking, there are flowers everywhere. The outdoor dining feels like a backyard and the indoor dining feels like a living room. The menu has numerous tasteful jokes about the food in the descriptions and is chalked full of tempting options. The only hard part is deciding what to get. The staff are both kind and attractive and treat you like relitives(in a good way). This is a great place to go and relax and escape the day.

We have been trying to go to this place for a few month now. So this past Thursday we went for lunch and it was nothing I had in mind. After reading most of the reviews on this site I thought it would be pretty good. But the service was bad, the server was trying to rush us out of there, we didn't have anytime to look at the menu, so finally I told him, it's our first time here so we are going to need more time to decide. Then came the food that was a big disappointment. My onion soup had only a couple of pieces of onions. The carnitas wrap was so average that a Taquaria would have been a better choice. I was not pleased at all with the restuarant and definetly will not go back again.
Cons: service, food, location

I would hate to see how many calories are in some of the dishes, but it sure is good!
Posted 12/03/05
The place is cute, wholesome and homey....but, the food is only average. It's nothing special. Just a little hole in the wall place, where all of the locals go. However, I didn't find the food any better than any other diner or breakfast nook.
Pros: Ambience
Cons: Parking

I went to Grub for breakfast today for my birthday. I loved the place as soon as I walked in--you walk under an arch covered with morning glories to get to the patio seating area, which was very cute--many interesting and colorful plants. No outside tables were available, so we sat inside. My BF and I both ordered pancakes. They were SMALL--I mean tiny. About 1/4 inch thick (which was fine--I prefer my pancakes thin and crepe-y rather than thick and cake-y), but there were 3 of them, and they were about as big around as a small grapefruit! And then, the CARDINAL sin...the "maple syrup" was MAPLE FLAVORED CORN SYRUP! I ordered pancakes because the menu described them as coming with maple syrup...at IHOP or DENNY'S, I would have asked "REAL maple syrup?", but this seemed like the kind of place that would know the difference. Very disappointed.
Pros: cute, affordable, tasty
Cons: stressed-out owner, stomping around, barking at servers.

Three of us 40-something women went there for a Sunday brunch. What an adorable place with really great food. Gotta agree with the previous reviewer about those pancakes. I need to figure out how to make them at home! Grub's atmosphere is artsy and eclectic though not pretentious..Laid back and comfortable with really good food. I have already been recommending it to friends. I live a bit far but we went there based on these CitySearch reviews and I'm glad we did.

We were tourists looking for something NOT about finding stars to see, just wanting a great breakfast. Grub has great Food with a wonderful twist, location is easy to find although off the main roads which is super because the patio outdoor area is beautiful AND quiet. Their blueberry-granola pancakes with raspberry butter and boyseberry syrup were delicous and the omlettes were wonderful as well. Nice people serving us and it was really just what we were looking for: reasonable, great breakfast a but off the normal LA path.
Pros: food, service, ambiance
Cons: Later opening 9AM

I brought my roommate and boyfriend to Grub for the first time. Our waiter asked us if we had been there before. Because there were two new people with me he told us all his favorite stuff. He even told us one thing he didn't like...it was surprising but funny. All of us took his recommendations. My roommate and I got the grilled cheese with tomato soup. It was amazing as always!!! My boyfriend got a bbq beef sandwich which was awesome. The blueberry lemonade is great too! At the end of the meal our waiter asked us if we wanted a "giant ass" ice cream sandwich. We had a small one and it was really good. I will go back to Grub again and again. The service is always great. This is my favorite new restaurant and anyone who doesn't like it is crazy! Thanks.
Pros: ambience, service, food
Cons: construction, loud, hot inside

We went to Grub on Citysearch's recommendation and were truly disappointed. The service was slow. The sandwiches we ordered, which was overpriced, did not include the ingredients that were described on the menu.

I have used them to cater events with our company and the food is fabulous, the services is courteous and the people there are just as great as the food. I have not personal had an opportunity to visit the restuarant directly but can't believe how much I am impressed and how many people rave about the food. Betty has personally jumped through so many hoops to make our orders just the way I love it. I can't say enough about this Restaurant or their staff.
Pros: Excellent Food, Varietys , Excellent Service

I'm in love with their "Friggin Amazing French Toast". You have a choice of bread. Get it made with a Croissant. I think angels make it.

great everything- coming into Grub and being greeted by Bette and Denise (owners) is a little slice of goodness- open arms and a smile- why do'nt htey open for dinner? Ideal for industry lunch meetings (good celebrity spotting too), or a meal with family or friends. they cater too!

I was so glad to see Grub finish in the number three spot in the recent CitySearch poll for Best Lunch Spot. I have had the pleasure of eating there numerous times and have always been very impressed with the exceptional quality of service, food and general good feeling of the restaurant. To see a new restaurant that is so obviously concerned with their guests experience place so highly in the poll against the larger, chain restaurants proves to me that the "human touch" is very appreciated by L.A. diners. Kudos to Grub and if you haven't yet experienced this restaurant, I strongly recommend that you do so soon.
Pros: Great service, Exceptional food, Feels like home

I had a great chicken salad from here. It's a cute place...
Posted 03/25/05
This one of my favorite lunch spots. Located in a renovated house, it's cozy, warm and feels light-years away from the L.A. "scene." The After School Special--grilled cheese oozing several types of rich cheeses and a small bowl of tomato sleep--is delicious and soothing. The Hot Chicks salad is hot chunks of buffalo-spiced of white chicken meat on romaine with red onion slices, blue cheese crumbles, carrot shavings and ranch dressing and is mouthwateringly amazing. The patio is a nice place to sit; inside is cute, but with the wood floors and a crowd, it can get overwhelmingly loud. The sandwiches are huge and tasty.
Pros: Amazing food, easy parking, homey vibe

We had lunch late in the afternoon just before Grub closed so we were seated right away. The tuna melt was the best I have ever tasted with peppers and a pesto sauce. The bread was crispy but not greasy. The steak salad came with ample slices of meat and was very tasty. The place is very cute with a whimsical and ecletic feel to it. My only disappointment was the blueberry lemonade that tasted like "lemonade." Parking was easy to find a few doors down on the street.
Pros: Good Value, Cute Place, Good Food

I visited Grub based upon the recommendation of other citysearch reviewers. One of the themes of previous reviews was that this restaurant was too crowded. I, however, went on a Saturday morning. There was no crowd at all. The residential neighborhood was very peaceful without the hub-bub of week day traffic. I enjoyed the cinnamon french toast. My one-year-old played happily at the table with my wife and I. The interior of the restaurant is really an old house remodeled to become one large dining room. We found that pleasant, like you were at home away from home. So, come in on a Saturday morning if you want a peaceful, easy, and enjoyable time.

Ok, so if your sick of the LA lunch scene, want good food, and not pay an arm and a leg.... this is the place. Sit outside, chill, and immediately forget what city you're in. Go for the goat cheese salad w/ chicken or "the after school special". What a little diamond in the rough.
Pros: parking, cost, food

I recently went to Grub a few weeks ago and fell in love with the place. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is great! Our food took about ten minutes to get to the table from the time that we ordered. We had hardly noticed this fact until one of the staff came over and appologized for the wait. She brought us free desert and cookies in baggies for our hike that day. I go to this place whenever I get a chance. The decor is very welcoming and homey. I feel like I'm at a friend's house. I highly recommend this place!
Pros: inexpensive, good parking, friendly staff

This is the place to dine! What a terrific menu, charming ambience and fantastic customer service. We've been there several times and everything on the menu is scrumcious! Check it out you won't be dissapointed - ever!!!
Pros: Service!, Character!, Delicious!

I have been there on Easter Day. They serve food in buffet style. Service is good and cozy. Make you feel you were in a family style party.
Pros: family social place

Went to Grub yesterday for lunch and loved it! Who would have thought there was such a great little place hidden in Hollywood's post-production area? My lunch date and I were given a wonderful basket of veges as soon as we sat down and we proceeded to order spring rolls with an amazing peanut sauce along with our BBQ beef and Sloppy Joe sandwiches. The owner Betty was delightful and a pleasure to speak with and our server Susan was a hoot! This is an establishment that cares about their product and their patrons. I'm looking forward to becoming a regular of this fun , comfortable lunch spot. Give Grub a try. You'll be happy you did.
