Expect to be asked for your reservation by entering this stylish sushi joint. We were lucky and got seated promptly though. The sushi paradise offers a wide menu of diverse sushi creations, salads, desserts, beer, Saki and more elaborate fish meals. The spicy California Roll is really to die for and I have never seen so impeccable arranged rolls like this before. Salmon rolls were tiny but perfectly arranged. The setting is stylish, the laid-back crowd maintains a casual vibe though. Be aware of the prices before you go!

Pros: handsome interior with dim lights and a chance to meet a celebrity

Cons: too loud, expensive, not traditional

the portions were tiny - i have been to sushi restaurants all over LA and I can tell you that these are really smalls, skimpy pieces (both the rolls and the sushi). and i could see giving small pieces if the fish was so, so good - but its not - it really mediocre. i have definately had better quality sushi at numerous other places. and for what you are paying (this place is really not cheap), to get both small portions and just ok sushi is unforgiveable. i mentioned to the waiter that we were gonna have to order more food because these were really small portions compared to other places, he agreed, but did nothing about it when we ordered more food. generally, he did not seem like he cared one way or another if we enjoyed the food or had a good experience - i guess we werent LA enough for him. we had to wait half an hour just to get our water, and the place wasnt even busy ! Basically, never again !!!

The sushi was fantastic and the decor was vibrant. We ordered one Godzilla roll at first, but it was so good we had to order another one! The martinis are very tasty. I had the Wasabi Martini and finished it like it was lemonade on a hot day. I recommend this restaurant to everyone!

My friend and I visited Blowfish last year on a Friday night. We drove by around 9pm and we thought the place was closed, since from the street you cannot really see inside the place. We got valet and I must say it is a totally different world when you step inside. The decor and the house music playing was GREAT. We had to wait for about 30 mintues due to the fact we didn't make reservations. We hung out at the bar and time passed quick. This place really lives up to its name SUSHI TO DIE FOR. I recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi and house music. The staff was friendly and lots of HOT people to look at.

From the moment you walk in you feel really good. I like the music they play. Their martinis are really good. Their fusion sushi dishes are excellent. My friends and I had fun there. They have valet parking that is super fast. The decor is really cool.

I love to go to a nice places for Happy Hour. The crunch roll is amazing and I washed it down with the spiciest cocktail I've ever had. Yeah, I said it, my cocktail was spicy. In fact, there was a jalape?o pepper floating in it. Very complex flavor and unlike anything I'm used to. Not really sure how else to describe it but the main part of the drink was a ginger vodka by Alchemy

My favorite sushi in LA. I'm sick of KOI (love it, but tired of it) This is the spot. Great food, great service, great everything. Baked Alaska sushi was awesome. Do yourself a favor.

Cons: that I can't be here EVERY NIGHT

The title says it all. Food is excellent, but the service is consistently horrible. No specific incidents, but expect waits of 5+ minutes to get drink refills, and I have never waited less than 20 minutes to get my check after asking (I have a friend that works there so I've been there a lot). Sit at the bar and you will be fine though, bartenders are great. Waiters and waitresses shouldn't be allowed to work at denny's or norm's, let a lone a high end sushi joint

Nice booths, dark lighting, Anime movies playing all over - hip trendy atmosphere but REALLY SMALL PORTIONS. Hirami/Halibut Carpaccio is TEEENY TINY! and costs $15 - thought i was receiving an amouse bouche instead of an appetizer. Same goes for the Albacore "Salad" - there is no green leaf in sight, just a tickle of 4 tiny albacore slices with a teency bed of japanese cucumber. it is however, served on a bed of ice, which made me realize that presentation will be above actual nourishment at this place. I was under impressed by the dragon and spider roll. Go for the other more special rolls instead.
I do recommend the baked crab roll - another whopping $15 for ONE handroll, but tasty, and their sushi wine from spain was good. Yet with soooooo many much better sushi places in L.A, this one can be skipped - unless you just love spending over $100 on a dinner for two, where you end up still hungry.

I have never had better Sushi in LA and the staff is extremely nice. I loved our waitress' suggestions especially
?The ?Mendy roll? it may be the best thing I have ever eaten, Period. Service is on point, and the ambiance and decor is beautiful. Blowfish is a super modern cool stylish Japanese lounge, With an overall very comfortable atmosphere. Sunset Blowfish delivers a taste of the exotic to LA, a treasure a true "Mendeleh" It will take a while, but I plan to try everything on the menu.

I WAS FIRST AMAZED BY ALL OF THE NICELY TUFTED WALLS, THE SEATING, ALL OF THE DECOR ITEMS BUT WAS DISAPOINTED BY THE SUSHI NOT TO DIE FOR AT ALL IF ONLY THEIR SUSHI WOULD TASTE AS GOOD AS THE PLACE LOOKS, THE SERVICE WAS ON THE SPOT BUT CAN'T SAY I OR ANYONE IN OUR PARTY WAS HAPPY WITH THE FOOD..

When I first called to make a reservation and asked about corkage fee, the girl that answered the phone didn't know what it was (not only how much it was, but what corkage meant). We weren't sure if we should go, but we went anyway. The host and the manager at the front were proessional. It took a good 10 min for our server to first come to the table to greed us. Besides that initial delay, her service (susie I believe) was really really good.

But man, the sushi is just awful. the fish is okay, too much rice in some rolls, they are just not too die for at all. All the nigiri was just unbelievably poorly done, the ego roll is just as its named, great ingredients put together on a beautiful presentation with absolutely no flavor, 4 pieces for $17 bucks.

You mos def dont go there for sushi. You go there for the ambiance, After almost $230 for super below average sushi, I wont recomment anyone to go there to eat sushi (bar looked nice) or I will go back there. Sushi bar has alot of catching up to do to the FOH. Shame on the chef.

Pros: Suzie, Ambiance

I love this place. I love the music. I love the drinks. The service was fantastic, granted we always treat the staff with the ultimate respect. My husband and I have been there MANY times and have no complaints. Plus the bathroom sinks are nice. Get the Dynamite!!

We arrived passed our reservation time, had to wait a little bit but not too long.Toshi Koshi....hands down....really good! Unfortunately, I didn't order our food to know the other names but most were really good. A few people had recommended the animal roll, I didnt' think it was THAT good a bit too salty for me. After our first round we were still hungry so we had to order more. I liked the music they were playing and the staff was really nice and helpful in terms of ordering. For three people our bill came out to be $200+. Our dessert was amazing. It was this green tea trio that I'm craving right now.

I loved Blowfish! The food was good, the service was ok, and the atmosphere seemed very trendy...definitely a great place to go to when you're with friends, but not on a date.

Luckily I went with friends. The music was a bit too loud, our wait for our reserved table was about half an hour and our table was too small. I ended up tipping the host guy to find us another 2 top to add to our table. The food is quite pricey, but definitely good. "Give me good sushi and I don't mind paying for it."

It was a fun place, not to mention the great sushi.... I'll definitely be back for more.

We had reservations on Valentine's Day at 6pm. We were running a half hour late due to ridiculous traffic. We called at six to let the hostess know that we were running late and to ask if we would still be able to get a table. She actually said this..."Yeah, I guess so, but you're going to have to eat like really, really fast. Like, way faster than you had originally intended because we are really really slammed." I was left speechless! A simple yes or no would have been fine. Well, after stressing for the next half hour trying to make it there we finally arrive to an empty restaurant! And when we left at 8pm there were still a ton of tables left and the sushi bar was empty. Luckily the food was great and our server was sweet. I would have expected them to play something other that blaring techno on Valentine's though.

Don't go here if you plan to have dinner with someone you actually want to talk to. The place has speakers all over the place so wherever you're sitting, you're surrounded by the loud music. The music wasn't that bad actually but I have no idea why its so loud I can't hear what the person across the table is saying to me.

Service was sub-standard for the prices. It was Valentine's and the place had empty tables but the service was still slow. Sushi was OK but not worth double what you pay to eat at your fav. sushi spot. Appetizers came last - how does that even happen?!

1 roll was never arrived at all. When we were sitting for 10 min. after our meals, we told the waitress that we would like our check and to take off the roll that never arrived. She said that is probably still being made... a simple salmon roll that was ordered 45 min. ago. We told her that we no longer wanted it so she walked away and a waiter came by a minute later and dropped of a roll that should have arrived 20 min. ago that we had to eat.

What's good: Albacore Spicy Sashimi

What's OK: rolls and sushi

What's bad: To Die For appetizer - hardly no lobster in the middle and not worth the $22 pricetag.

Would I eat her again for dinner : Probably not.
Would I grab a drink If I'm on Sunset: Sure, why not.

All in all: Nice place, food is ok (if not overpriced), service was slow and the loud music would be OK if you were just hanging out at the bar with friends.

first i want to say, to all those people who have said that Blowfish has small portions:
you dont order ONE roll for sushi! thats not what youre meant to do!!!! you order a bunch of different rolls for the table and you mix and match. i mean really kids! you've just got to be kidding! if youre looking for a one dish meal for cheap, go to maggianos!!!!!!! this is a place where you get to taste some of the most incredible flavors, so dont get just one thing! the Pyramid of Tartar is just the aboslute best. they make the potato chips there. so good. the spicy Tiger Prawns are ridiculously good, people cant NOT eat them when theyre on the table. the Dynamite Caps (dynamite roll filling on top of mushroom caps) are delicious as well... you just find yourself popping the little mushrooms in your mouth! mmm. as far as rolls... oh sooo many of them! the Ritsu (no rice, but so tasty, the Crunchy California (if u like tempura youll like this), the Super Dynamite (a big mouthful of awesome flavors), the Animal Style (oniony) , the Dragon (dont know dont care just so good!), the Spicy Hamachi (aka spicy tuna) and more. honestly ive had all these rolls and theyre soooooo good. blowfish isnt a checp sushi joint, but its amazing. if you have a problem with crowds or waiting for your seat, dont go on a friday or a saturday, but make it in on a week night and youll see how amazing it is. even just the crib salad is soooo yummy for a simple lunch or great starter! ive gone there jsut to get drinks and the Pyramid before. its that good. the club-y atmosphere makes it a grerat stop before a night out. there are things i didnt mention, but go see for yourself. its just good. thats all there is to it!

.

i've been waiting to try sushi at blowfish for about a year, despite the mixed reviews... i found katsu-ya, sasabune, sushi roku, and just about everywhere else MUCH better. First, the service was retarded - menu was missing few pages, and the waitress just shrugged it off as "i've never seen that before" and never came back. Sushi of decent cuts, but the pieces of fish are very small, on an even tinier piece of rice... and for that, way too much $$$ our bill for two was around $140, which left me upset at the quantity and the overall experience. i'd gladly spent that much elsewhere and have left very satisfied... the place itself is cool, but seriously, the food is not worth it in my opinion. i'm never going back.

This place gets a lot of undeserved hype. The food was too salty, ridiculously overpriced and in small portions. The restaurant's music was so loud that diners had to yell across the table at one another. I felt like I was in a loud bar....a really boring hollywood wanna-be hipster bar, with lots of boring industry people all looking over each others' shoulders to see who else was there and who might be looking at them. The drinks were great though.

From food to scene to the vibe at blowfish.......... its defintely an awesome experience. Its a great spot for a first date, a birthday party or just a dinner out on the town.
The food is reallllly really good. In this part of town with this ambience you definetely are getting your moneys worth. The portions and flavors are perfect. Order the kyo twist (miso cod), kobe beef carpacchio, and the toshi koshi roll. The oyster roulette is also a fun and good dish.
The servers and staff are really hot and I noticed there service is improving. Theres also a couple hot chefs but all in all...... go for the food, ambience and experience.

Blowfish is my new favorite restaurant on the Sunset Strip. The decor is really nice and the food is great. They have a great happy hour at the bar, weekdays from 5-7pm. You can make your own rolls and all sake cocktails are only $5 each. The drinks were a little weak, but the bartender had no problem making mine stronger when I asked.

No matter what scene you're looking for, you can find it at Blowfish. Thursday, Friday & Saturday are obviously the busy, crazy nights, (make a reservation) very fun with high energy however, I like Mondays or Tuesdays, it's a little more chill and you can kick back and take you time enjoying the amazing menu. The DJ's rock and if the volume is right it make for a fantastic dining experience. Prices are comparable to similar spot so whatever, it's LA. Sushi to die for and entrees to k#ll for, try the chicken or fillet. Friend had a large party (in backroom) which requires a pre-set menu. At first it seemed like a pain but once your in the mode of the night it actually made the whole dinner smoother plus you know the cost ahead of time.
The one time I had not such a good time I simply stated my case and they took great care of it, so don't be shy, they have a really cool staff that will correct the problem if they know about it. That to means alot to me, so I continue to go. Have fun

Seated promptly with no reservations, friendly hostess and server. Ambience was wonderful, if you make a reservation ask for the corner table against the wall. Cushions and couchlike seating very cozy and romantic was the dim lighting. I was a bit surprised at the animeporn they were playing on the LCDs and pictures lining the walls. So if your'e bringing the kids be forewarned. As for the food, it was pretty good. Try the koshi toshi roll for sure!!!

I went with a group of friends on a weekend night and even with reservations we had to wait a lot longer than we would normally wait for seating...when finally seated, I must say we were seated in a nice, almost intimate corner of the restaurant...our waiter was fantastic and was more than helpful with the menu and drink choices...the food was average though and a bit overpriced, I've had better sushi and sashimi that cost a lot less...the portions were adequate at least...I did enjoy my drinks though, I had a mango mojito and a lychee sidecar...

With all the hype this place gets, I expected a lot more. I love sushi and have found some great hole in the wall places in LA, but wanted to try this out once. I will never go back. The service is horrible and it is SO overpriced. It's good but not fantastic, and a little salty for my taste. Totally not worth it.

A bunch of my coworkers and I met there for a few drinks after work. Our bartender was SO awful and probably the rudest person I have ever encoutered in my life. Not only did it take 2 hours to get food, but when i got the bill I gave her money and then she came back and said she forgot to add in tax.. which she said was roughly two dollars- which I saw keep for her tip! Unbelievable. This morning I found out one of my coworkers actually got food poisioning! Honestly there are SOO many better sushi/happy hours restaurants in Los Angeles I would advise you to take the time out and try a different restaurant.

The portions are ridiculously small, and just because you call something "japanese" or "buddha" does not make it asian. The food was dismal and while they're meticulous and great about wiping your table every 10-15 minutes, they take forever to bring out your food, your drinks, your check (but they're fast at collecting the credit card, of course). I don't understand why I had to wait 45 minutes after the salad for rolls!
With this kind of quality, you're better off going to Sawtelle & Olympic for cheaper better food!!
But if you're the type who loves the L.A. scene, then it's worth going just to check out the place.

All I can say in preface is WOW...I had pretty much just landed in LA for my first time visit and this restaurant began what was to turn out to be many wonderful experiences in California whilst still remaining one of the most enduring memories. Blowfish however was the best food I had throughout the entire trip, the flavours and textures on the tongue were aromatic, tangy and delightful in equal measure. In fact without a doubt the best meal of my life....eating it was pure theatre as it was as entertaining as any show...the dumplings supported on delicately carved orange rind whilst shrouded in dry ice smoke was sublime....complete 5* effort. loved it and plan to experience again !

It's understandable that on a Friday night 5 people with 9pm reservations at any trendy place on Sunset will still have to wait. However, we didnt get seated for an hour, and worse, our waiter recommended that we don't order any cut rolls or appetizers or anything from the bar because it would take too long. Which pretty much was everything that people come to this restaurant to eat. We didnt get our food for another hour, and after the waiter messed up our bill, we didnt get out of there until close to midnight. To top it off, the portions were riduculously small, and the rolls tasted like deep fried mayonnaise in rice. For anyone who knows good sushi in LA, this is clearly not the place to go.

Pros: nice bathrooms, good ambiance, good looking crowd

Cons: loud music, too dark

Wow this place has the most beautiful bathrooms I have ever seen. The sinks must have cost a fortune. Unfortunately the food is horendous. I dine on sushi 3 times a week. This was on a whim I am not likely to repeat. The pyramid of tuna and gaucamole felt like contrasting layers of slime in my mouth. The fish is clearly farm raised and flavorless.
But the bathrooms are beautilful. If you have to stop and "go" this is the place. You will be awed. Just don't eat the food or drink the water.

Been to the original Blowfish in San Jose. Couldn't be happier they opened on in L.A. Doesn't skew far from it's original's good service, good food, and good drinks.

We went to dinner with 2 friends from the Bay Area there for dinner this past weekend. The music was SO INCREDIBLY loud that we could barely hear each other even when leaning over. It was so difficult to hear and speak that we had to yell across the table. Even the server said she could barely hear the customers half the time. Additionally - the music is not groovey, chill, lounge music - it is super loud, annoying Techno. I looked around and no one in the place looked like they were enjoying it. Everyone was just leaning into each other trying to hear what the hell their dining companion was saying. I was soo happy to get out of there and go somewhere quiter - like a night club ! Oh -last thing. There were some decent West Hollywood type people but also a TON OF CHEESEBALLS !

Prices are reasonable, we had 4appetizers,1 sashimi,2 maki roll, assorted sushi, sake, cocktail, desserts. We ea chipped in $45.Not bad at all!

The sushi was really fresh and high quality. Try the toro (incredibly fatty), yellowtail, riku roll and animal roll. All were excellent. 2 appetizers to die for is the black cod marinated in miso and sake and the seared albacore. The black cod could be the best fish I have ever had. The drinks are fruity and weak but not too expensive at $7. The ambience is great - it's like being in an upscale club with incredible food. The worst part of the experience was the service. When we arrived, the entire place was practically empty but yet we were made to wait for about 10-15 mins before seated. The food came out a little slow and the wait staff was terrible. We had a fiasco with our bill because our waitress couldn't do the math. Otherwise, it would have been a near perfect experience.

Good sushi in a chic NY atmosphere. We had great service from our waitress and loved the hip and happening scene on a Friday night. But if you really want great sushi, you may want to try Matsuhisa where the sushi is much fresher and will melt in your mouth. But if it's ambiance/drinks/good food....this is a fun place.

Monday night dinner was just the perfect time to try this out, as it was just comfortable filled (maybe 70% full), so we had really attentive service. Order the Sashimi Combo ($29) w/c has 7 varieties of sashimi (15 pcs total)--unbelievable! So fresh it almost melts in your mouth. Their eel is terrific too (most places have eel that tastes too fishy). And the desserts---heavenly! Had 2 miso, sashimi combo, 2 cut rolls, 3 drinks, 1 dessert (flambe) for only $85 (pre-tip)! Nothing to complain about!!!

OK, so the hostess screwed up by seating us in a section without a waitress... not a big deal..
The food was delicous and presented beautifully... and once the waitress did show up, she was friendly and sweet... as were all the waitstaff.
We also expected to be paying so much more than we actually did - just because it's the cool, new sushi place on Sunset.

I've been to this restaurant since its grand opening parties. Oh, and have you seen the Puerto Rican hostess - reason enough to keep going back. Besides that, that food is simply rediculous. You MUST try the Tiger Prawns, the Chilean Sea Bass and, ironically for a sushi restaurant, the steak Filet. The roles are amazing and so is the fresh sashimi. I've come to know the management and they intend on nothing less than perfection and are always willing to hear constructive words. Pauly Walnut is a complete moron and I'm sure they could care less if he comes back.

I was excited to hear the restraunt that I fell in love with in San Francisco was coming to my home town. Blowfish in L.A is fun, excellant vibe(hip without pretension), food was perfect(try the filet, shrimp roll..name?) the crowd was cool and friendly..drinks excellant..BUT..the service we had for a group of 6 was pleasent but slooooowww. This is L.A speed it up...1 hour 45 min. start to finish is too ong. It may have been the private party but excuses don't fix needed improvements. Honestly..the place is so cool and fun..I would continue to go back regardless of how slow..I'll just keep complaining but you will find me there night after night till they speed it up.

This is the best Sushi Ive Ever Had. Ive eaten sushi, almost everyday for the past 4 years. I just moved here from New York In November, Ive eaten at Katsuya ,Matsuisha, and Sushi Roku.... These places are a 4 compared to this place, and this place is a 10.
I was so happy when I went there Last night!!!, and realized how good the food was.
Order the Ritsu Roll, it has no rice, 2 different types of Tuna, and avacado.... Then the baked salmon roll, and order any roll, with the seaweed on the outside, it is Amazing... As I saw all the people around me order more food, I wanted to try all theirs as well , becasue it looked sooo GOOD
This restaurant is AMAZING>!!!!!

Great Experience. A fun place to eat with a well dressed good looking crowd. The anime and lcd screens everywhere make the dining experience a trip to a Japanese industrial architectural wonderland. Perhaps the best sushi I've had in LA. Similar food to Koi, Katana, and Matsuhisa but while still being cutting edge remains more pure to its sushi roots. Even the simple sashimi combo was done to perfection with thick cold fresh fish on a bed of ice.
