Jim Matson Automotive is a Facility you can rely upon. The Shop is clean and Jim knows what he's talking about. I have my vehicles serviced there regularly and take their advise; It has'nt failed me yet.

This guy is busy enough with his regulars not to care how he treats new customers. I spent over $500 in one visit and left with the same problem I went in with. He put my estimate on a post-it note, not on official company letterhead, which was about the 3rd red flag I ignored. If you can wait for your car, I would suggest you do so. If not, have someone drive by and see if your car is even being worked on. Make them show you your old parts, all of them. Perhaps because I didn't flinch at the initial quote is why he kept adding things to fix to the bill. I had to quickly let him know that I was not a rich woman and that there was a limit as to what I would be able to pay. Thank God, he honored that request. Places that tout themselves as being "cheap" or "honest" are in fact just that with SOME customers. For others, usually the new people they don't care to see again, they will attempt to gouge you to make up the difference. Nuh-uh, don't even try it. One plus here is that there is a waiting area. They seem more comfortable that you stay there as opposed to watching the mechanics work. I personally would not go here again but would not necessarily dissuade one from going here. You might get lucky and get the honest, courteous, professional mechanic I've only read about.

It is rare to find a mechanic who will tell you what really needs to be done, how to do it, and how much it'll cost you. Matson has serviced my family's cars for almost 4 years and has given us amazing pricing, and quick reliable service. Easy to talk to and understand (for those who aren't car savvy), Jim is personable and knows how to keep his customers coming back.

There isn't another mechanic who will charge you less for such great service.

Jim Matson is THE BEST automechanic in Los Angeles, and the best I have ever had anywhere. He's honest, easy-going and great at what he does. He is always entirely straightforward about repairs, weighing the benefits and detriments of any fix against the value of the car. He'll tell you flat out if he thinks it's not worth it for him to do work on your car (if it's old, or if it won't be much help in the long run). When he does, he delivers exactly what he says he will deliver. He's helpful in working around schedules, letting you drop off your car before or after hours. Long live Jim Matson!

Jim is the best mechanic in Los Angeles, and possibly in the world. He is absolutely lives up to his reputation as LA's "Most Honest Mechanic." Not only does he undercharge for many services, but he performs them quickly and perfectly. If he knows you're under financial constraints, he always gives you several options, a cheaper (and often more short-term) and a more expensive (but more long-term) one. I have recommended Jim Matson to every car owner I know, and they have all been really impressed by his integrity. Plus, he's a really nice guy to deal with on a personal level too. I think he's saved me hundreds or even thousands of dollars on unnceccesary repairs that I would have been pushed into elsewhere. If you go see Jim, you won't be disappointed. (But call a day ahead - he's got a very busy shop!)

I brought my car in thinking it had leaking seals and was on the verge of death. Jim's guys saw me immediately and fixed the problem in about 40 minutes by draining the excess oil that a crappy EZ Lube place had put in. Jim was polite, honest, efficient, and explained and showed me the problems without talking down to me. Charged me $17.50. Really a fantastic experience at a mechanic.

he's the best. voted "most honest mechanic" by the LA Weekly in 1999. and he is. our last mechanic never cost us less than $250 - every single time - whether this repair was the same as the last repair we had done a month ago (and still should be under warrantee) or seemed simple and quick, it was a minimum of $250.

after many visits to jim, i'm just now getting a bill for that amount and i'm glad to pay it. when i took my clunker in last month for a stuck gas pedal (yikes!) he didn't charge us anything! a friend passing through town who needed some emergency car care was charged $63 bucks! (he said he'd never paid that little and the ailment had been a mystery back home for months!)

and, by the way, jim is waaaaay cool. just a cool guy. and if he can't fix it, he'll send you to someone who will for a great price. that old mechanic i went to said it would cost a minimum of $800 to fix our sunroof(!) and jim sent us to a place that did it for under $300.

jim is the best. check him out here: www.jimmatson.com

PROS: honest, quick, flexible, comfy waiting room
CONS: a little out of the way, best to make an appt.
