Chewy chips and habanero cream salsa are an awesome combo. They have a nice variety of margaritas and the beef tacos fried with pickle are killer too.

A hidden gem in Silverlake. I had the carne asada plate and a side of the chips with haberno salsa. Everything was really good. Will be back to try some of the other menu items and also the bar crowd that shows up later in the night.

You have to pay for chips and salsa :( Which defeats the purpose of the whole Mexican hospitality!!! The drinks are good but way over priced!!!

Great place! Love the decor, the music, the food, the bar. My only wish is for a few more items on the menu. I'd love to try their versions of some more Mexican dishes. But greta place to take a date.

I have only been here once and would say my experience was good, not great. I have trouble trusting any mexican restaurant that does not have complimentary chips and salsa but I must say I really enjoyed the habanero one. It set my mouth on fire and had really great flavor with the creme. The margaritas were also excellent but a bit pricey. I also enjoyed the side order of plantains but wish they had a combo order of beans and rice instead of pricing them separately. All of these individual items add up and end up being way too much food unless you are sharing between 3 or more people.

The food overall was good but definitely not the best plate of mexican food I have ever had. The wait staff was friendly and we were served in a reasonable amount of time. I think this would be a good place to enjoy with a group of friends as the atmosphere is pretty lively and fun.

Always had a great time here over the years. Very tasty food and great service from a great looking staff! Watch out for the chips, though, they are tasty byt not free and the staff pushes them on ya. Other than that, enjoy. 2nd floor is cool too as is the patio.

A friend of ours choose this place for our monthly "get out of the house" dinner date.

1. I read the reviews and prepared the 6 of us that the service was sub-par...reviews were correct

2. One of the very few places were chips have to be purchased.

3. Drinks were delivered fast and tasty.

4. 3 inch diameter tacos...not so good.

5. Automatically charged 18% gratuity for a group of six. Correct me if I am wrong, but gratuity is for great service right....not mediocre service.

Malo has a really really good breakfast on the weekends. And they have a full bar, if you're in the mood for a Bloody Mary. They have Mexian specials and your standard bacon and eggs for around $7. Not good if you're looking for a busy spot, but really tasty and good service.

I have been coming to Malo for three years now and feel like I have a pretty good handle on it. First of all, let me say that this is hands down my FAVORITE restaurant in LA. The habanero & cream salsa, the guacamole, and the rojo enchiladas are my favorite items on the menu. Their margaritas are delicious and the cucumber water is a perfect compliment to any dish.

That being said, I'd like to point out that the service is HORRIBLE. My complaints are as follows:

1) With a large group they always take WAY too long and are inattentive. I recently waited over 50 minutes for a food order (group of 9 people) and two people from our party even walked out. We even mentioned to the server that we were pressed for time and they completely ignored us. My experiences here with a group have always been negative.

2) The bartenders are RUDE. Every time have sat at the bar or in one of the bar tables (at least 20+ times now) I have noticed that the bartenders are rude. Some of my friends chalk this up to them being too "silverlake" but I dont care. They ignore you until you flag them down and even then you cant get a smile or thank you out of them. I have tried over-tipping, engaging in conversation, etc...they dont budge. I have seen this with several of the bartenders there on a variety of shifts so they must be hiring them on purpose.

3) On at least 3 different occasions I have been sat (with a table of 2-4 persons) and ignored by our server for at least 20 minutes. With a very basic menu and ample staff this is just TOO LONG.

I continue to come to Malo because I love the food. For me, the quality of the food outweighs the fact that I expect poor service. However, I find myself driving across town (from West LA) less and less because I just cant justify spending $$ at a place that doesn't seem to want my business.

Pros: great salsa, authentic menu, delicioius maragaritas

Cons: horrible service

With a selection like Malo, you're bound to try some tequila that just makes your stomach churn. But the top shelf stuff like Don Julio 1942, Abondonado Extra Agave, etc. are so smooth and tasty even tequila haters can enjoy them.

First timers must try the chewy chips, the habanero and creme salsa, and the corn tacos with beef and pickles (I know...just try it). The ever changing menu always has a new surprise that's never boring, and the fresh, cold cucumber water is great at assuaging the distress caused by mixing spicy food and four kinds of tequila.

The tequila selection at Malo is insane!!! I have been trying to go once a week to get a few different tastings under my belt. Every time I visit the bartenders are very helpful with new selections for me to experience. The tacos rule there too, they are dope!!! On taco night I tried 6 different hard shell tacos with 6 different tequilas. They need to have more taco choices on the menu so I can experiment with tequila combinations.

I had dinner at Malo last night (doesn't that mean bad? I am very confused) and it was wonderful. The guacamole was so freakin' fresh and the server that recommended it was the best. She took great care of us and suggested the ground beef and pickle tacos. What a blast, pickles and tacos, together. The margaritas were also very fresh as was everything else. I understand why the place was full, because we both got out of there for under $40 total. Given the current economic climate I hope more places like this sprig up. Great food at a great value.

I cannot believe how well Malo has taken care of me over the years. Malo has been so good to me and my family that I had to write something up about them. From the moment we enter the door Malo's staff kindly greets us all by name and sits us at our favorite table. It seems that even when they are very busy Matt the manager comes to say hello. I have even watched servers who are very busy at this hopping restaurant notice that we are out of chips and promptly bring some to us. Not sure what other reviewers are talking about because the service here is four stars. And that includes the hostesses who are always generous with the crayons for our children. And when our children act up a bit all it takes is some more crayons. As a Silver Lake resident and business owner all I can say is that sometimes I wish other businesses in the neighborhood had as much integrity as them. I guess we are just blessed to live so close to Malo. They have been on our favorite list for years.

You wonder how in this economic climate restaurants can afford to lose a single customer through neglect. Well, Malo in Silverlake lost me and my wife last weekend. We left after sitting unattended to for about 15 minutes (I take that back ?? a busboy brought us water). We were the only ones sitting inside except for a family of six with some loud children; there were four tables occupied outside. I watched the entire service staff (I counted three servers) walk by numerous times and stare at us. The tipping point was watching one of the server??s standing in the back filing her nails. Meanwhile, the hostess (standing ten feet from us) stood idly by, occasionally glancing in our direction and answering the phone. Were we not cool enough to be served? I guess the family with the screaming children was cool enough. Does anyone manage this joint? Does the owner(s) know about how their investment is being run? As Silverlake residents and business owners, we??re very loyal to local restaurants and chat up our favorites. Not for our neighbors at Malo. They??ve been crossed off the list ?? for good.

I am an avid tequila drinker who frequents Los Angeles for work. In the past year and a half that I have been traveling back and forth to LA I have had the opportunity to check out all the great Mexican tequila bars in the city. The one I always go back to is Malo!!! The thing that I love about Malo the most is the QUALITY of their tequila selection and the Ground Beef and Pickle Tacos. Also you need to try the Chewy Chips (just make sure you ask for them well done otherwise they can be soggy). Now its nice to see 400 tequilas on a wall but 200+ amazing tequilas with bartenders who love tequila and can speak knowledgeably about it is rare. Even there cocktail server has an amazing amount of knowledge about tequila. She suggested some amazing ones to my friends based on what they drink otherwise. Stephanie ROCKS!! Oh and here is a plus there is NO PATRON!! Sorry Hollywood!! Oh yeah and to add to all of this they have about 30 mezcals and a couple of Sotols.

I had given up drinking the margarita years ago because no one can get it right. HOWEVER Malo has changed that as well. They are consistently good everytime. They aren't overly sweet. What else is amazing is that they embraced MIXOLOGY!!! They have some drink that includes some molecular foam (Its named after a car maybe an Impala??)thing happening and they hired a FEMALE MIXOLOGIST!! She speaks tequila, whiskey, rum, gin and vodka. If you want to learn anything sit in front of her for a bit. You will walk out a changed individual!!! My only complaint is that dirty items tend to be left on tables or bar in front of the customer and even after they leave. They could use a lesson in cleaning as they go.

My last complaint is I have put on about 10 lbs since Malo has come into my life but it is the price I am willing to pay for it...

Why someone didn't tell me that Malo had brunch is a complete shame. Who doesn't want to wake up on a Saturday and Sunday am and have tequila and breakfast? (BTW most amazing hangover food place) I fixed my Saturday morning by coming in and having a BLOODY MARIA and Eggs Toastada at 9:45am. Two Words: LIFE SAVING. My friend had the Medicina Latina; a drink with fresh ginger in it and I am kind of sorry I didn't order that. The Paloma Fizz was her second drink and I was even more mad that I didn't order cocktails. My Bloody Maria was great but those other drinks were unreal. We got our usual Habanero Salsa and Guacamole...By far this is the greatest discovery of 2009!!!

My friends and I are planning on another girls' brunch next weekend....SO DELICIOUS..I can't wait!!

Went there with my boyfriend one Sunday night a couple of weeks ago and was extremely disappointed with everything in this "so-called" restaurant. Waited a full 15 minutes and NOBODY was there to seat us. Sure there were waitresses inside but there was no host/hostess in sight. And they were not even full!! We then went to the other side of the bar and told the bartender about this and the bartender assured us that somebody will be with us shortly but another FIVE minutes passed and we were still not seated. That's when we decided that we will not wait a minute longer and left this SORRY place in a huff. I'm not a newcomer to this place i've been here once before and ok, it's fine that their prices are actually a rip-off because they charge 7 bucks for guacamole and a few bucks for their salsa! I mean somewhere else they give that for FREE!!! Even if we know that this place charges way too much we still came back because it's very near our place. And now i found out through friends that this place is a total disappointment when it comes to taking care of their guests because the customers usually have to wait for a long period to be seated and there is always NOBODY to take care of them. The service is subpar and the food is so-so. WE WON'T BE BACK AND I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. Go to El Compadre instead they know how to take care of their guests, it's a lot cheaper there and the food is definitely better. Or go to any other mexican restaurants because for sure no place could be worse than this place.

It took me a while to understand Malo, but I finally figured it out. It is very plain and simple. Great tacos, great margaritas and a friendly (not over bearing) waitstaff.
I couldn't figure out if I loved or hated this place at first. Now I love it 100%.
The dollar Taco Night is what put me over onto the love side.
I cannot get enough of the fried Ground Beef and Pickle tacos.

I have been to Malo a few times and find my self enjoying the food. Brunch on the other hand is one of the best kept secrets it seems. I had no idea they were even open for brunch and I live in the neighborhood. The chiliqueles was in-f'ing-credible!!! I don't even know how to spell it, but I loved it. We were able to walk in with a group of 8 and get a table on the patio right away.
Go Malo!!!

The Monday night taco are fantastic. Why? They are a buck each. On a regular evening, an order comes with three and the order is 6.50.

This isn't bad if you are looking for dinner under $10, which is fairly rare in LA when you are talking about good food.

Also, margaritas are awesome.

Only downfall... no reservations. I suppose that is good and bad. But this place is usually full.

When it opened, this was my favorite restaurant and for the following year or so I was there at least once a week. Gradually though, what was once a friendly and fun place to be turned into one of the most rude and poorly run restaurants in the city. These days, the wait staff are not only incompetent, but seem to be proud of it and one can only guess by their behavior that they are encouraged to treat you as poorly as possible. They ignore you, snap at you, bum cigarettes from your table, and then go stand and smoke them in plain view while you sit wishing to be served. The food, which is "good" in the way that greasy Mexican food is, does not enough to make up for this. You can get just as good food from a taco truck anywhere in the city and have a much more pleasant experience.

I went to brunch yesterday with my friends and was BLOWN away at how good it is. I've always been a fan of malo for dinner but - WOW! The pancakes are better than any pancakes i've ever had (and i consider myself quite the pancake fan) and the egg tostada was amazing. Not to mention the drinks - watermelon, strawberry, and spicy cucumber margaritas - YUM! the server was sweet as pie and was super helpful with recommendations. The music was perfect and it was not crowded at all - I've found my brunch eating spot!!!

Pros: music, service, margaritas, brunch food

.

I had the potato & cheddar tacos and they were amazing. The hostess was super friendly, the music was perfect and the tequila margaritas, phew delicious.
Malo will be my new 'haunt' for the rest of the summer, especially when it comes to the happy hour.

I used to LOVE this place and would eat there a few times every month. Lately, the service is lacking and their specialty margaritas which are very good have become small portion-wise to the high price. My latest visit left me and my friend waiting for our "salsa flight" for 15 minutes, not to mention we were never able to place a dinner order because no one would pay attention to us. Our $10 margs were high ball glasses mostly full with ice. After 25 minutes of being ignored we ended up leaving money on the table because we couldn't get the servers attention to give us our bill and went over to Mexico City. Adios Malo.

we were a little undecided about where to go and what to do last night, but we knew we were hungry. heard about malo on chowhound and thought, "tacos and tequila? we're there!" luckily found street parking and when we walked in to malo yummy yummy aromas greeted us. we ordered a mojito and a sangria, the fiance and my choice drinks, and quickly decided on the tomatillo and avocado salsa, ground beef and pickle tacos, carne asada tacos, and the potato tacos, plus rice and beans on the side. a lot of food, i know, but we polished it all off and still had room for tres leches cake! the tacos were a bit on the small side, but their taste really made up for it. turned out to be just right. the beef, pickle, and cheese tacos tasted just like a burger which was a little disoncerting at first, but actually quite good. i put some of the avocado salsa on my carne asada tacos and yowza! they were good. the rice was fluffy but didn't taste like anything til i mixed some beans in. the sangria was strong, just how i like it, and the tres leches cake was pretty good. all in all, we'll definitely go back to try more of their dishes!

Pros: fried-to-order chips, variety of salsas and tacos, cool decor

Cons: got a bit noisy, but really not a problem

I just finished having brunch at Malo and the Machaca is to die for. That combined with a fresh watermelon margarita puts this place over the top. I sat by myself on the patio, enjoyed some amazing music, and the server was wonderful.

Pros: Machaca; Watermelon Margarita, Service

Cons: hot today in Los Angeles

I was here on Friday night in the bar and I had the best experience. We arrived late, just before midnight and the bartender let us know that the kitchen was closing at midnight. She made some suggestions so we could make the cut off time and boy was she right. The Fried Potato Tacos with Chipotle were to to die for coupled with an Organic Margarita. Not only that but the bartender was a hottie!!! We ended up staying till 2am, drinking our way through the tequila list that was 200 bottles strong. It was an amazing experience and we cannot wait to return.

As soon as I walk in I start counting how long this hostess is just going to stare and eat her food before she decides to tell us that the kitchen apprently closes at 11 (not 2am). So make sure you don't go during those hours unless you love white trash anorexic girls that have something against brushing their hair. I'm sure the food would have been great, but bad snobby service makes it that much worse.

4 of us ate here for the first time the other night. We all thought that it was great!!! from the margaritas, to the potatoe tacos(unbelievable!!!) to our main courses. Loved the atmosphere, the waitress was great, will definitely recommend, and we can't wait to go back!

After reading the other reviews on citysearch I decided to try out Malo. Obviously I made a reservation since it seems just walking in can give you a bit of a wait. We arrived early and our table wasn't ready yet so we went over to the bar side. (It is behind the red curtain) Once in the bar we had a cucumber margarita and a ginger margarita. Both of these drinks blew us away. Once our table was ready the hostess found us in the bar and sat us. We started with their special salsa of the night, guacamole and tried the 'chewy chips' that said by request only. Fantastic!!! Then for dinner we had the braised beef special, some fried potato tacos (!!!wow!!!), rice, beans and corn. (!!!again WOW!!!) Once dinner arrived we had 2 more of the special margaritas and finished the night happy has can be with giant grins on our face. Who knew that such an unassuming place could be so good.

Malo Brunch was the best Mexican Style Breakfast that I have had in a long time. I had the huevos rancheros which were not only the perfect size but had all kinds of crazy flavors going on. I could have sworn that the bottom of the plate had a mini quesadilla. My girl had the French Toast with Mangos and Fried Bananas and this was the all time best french toast in Los Angeles. Our bloody mary's made with tequila were both refreshing and spicy, so crazy good that we had a couple each. Then to finish it off we went into the bar and had a mini tequila tasting with the bartender. That kid had such an informed palate concerning tequila that we will be back next week to try even more.

like others here, i seriously dont get whats up with their reservation policy... walked in and the place was practically empty... were told they were booked for the night... now i realize that you need to have tables ready but i also know how restaurants run and there is no reason not to seat a few tables when the place is empty no matter how many reservations are looming. can the mgmt please come on here and explain..? ive worked in famous/successful restaurants and we would always find a reasonable balance of how many walk ins to accomodate before reservations had arrived... i just dont see how you dont seat two people in an empty restaurant at 7pm even on a weekend... is there a bus about to unload your 730 resys all at once..? bar side is blah, dont see what the big deal is. decent food tho.

I've eaten at Malo many times. The chicken flautas are delicious, the sangria is great, and the chips and salsas are good (albeit a bit expensive). It's a fun place to eat -- that is if you can make it past the fembot at the hostess stand. No matter if Malo has only 2 vacant tables or only 2 patrons in the entire restaurant, you're likely to be told that they can't seat you if you don't have a reservation. I could understand if I the restaurant was 2/3 full when I arrived and they told me I might have to wait 15-20 minutes for a table because the vacant ones were reserved. But to be bluntly told that they can't accommodate you at all -- that's just downright stupid. So if they turn you away, just drive a little further east along Sunset to Alegria. You might have to wait a bit on a weekend night, but the food is way better anyway.

I went to Malo last week for the first time and I must say that upon arrival I saw some amazing salsa flights on a table near the door. Once we were sat our waitress came up to us all smiles, and before she could say a word we wanted salsas and margaritas. The salsas were amazing, the habanero and the pico de gallo were the best. Our margaritas were also amazing and affordable. The entrees were just as great as the salsas. Our Al Pastor and Carne Asada were perfect as was everything else about Malo.

This is one of those places that charges a lot for drinks and atmosphere and doesn't concern themselves with the food or service. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they do have high standards for their food and it's just their chefs that soock.

I took my girlfriend here because it was recommended to us by a good friend, and it's in the neighborhood. I'll admit, the atmosphere was nice and the sangria was good, but the praise stops there. Firstly, our waitress was slow and didn't give two sh*ts about us. Secondly, I paid five bucks for pico de gallo and chips thinking, "maybe this place is known for their salsas and the recipe is a well-guarded family secret, or at least for five bucks they'll bring it out with a sparkler and sing me happy birthday." WRONG. The salsa was so bland that I felt stupid paying for it. Everyone in the kitchen was laughing at me cause I paid for salsa that tasted like cardboard and cilantro.

I ordered the steak fajitas cause I saw someone walking out of the kitchen with someone else's and it looked great, and really, how can you mess up steak fajitas? This is how: every other piece of steak in the dish was a piece of gristle. I'm not joking either. It was horrible. It was flavorless and virtually inedible. My little sister is eight and is the whitest little Irish girl I know and she can make better steak fajitas then this place. Wanna know why? CAUSE STEAK FAJITAS ARE THE EASIEST THING TO MAKE, EVER!

If that isn't bad enough, the food made me sick too. I was writhing in bed for hours with contempt for Malo. I'll never go back to this place. Go to Chavo's, it's down the street and it's waaaaaaay better.

Cons: My girlfriend broke up with me and kicked my dog because Malo was so bad

My first experience here was awful. We arrived without a reservation
on a Friday night at 7:15. The place was almost completely empty,
except for a couple of tables.
The hostess asked "Do you have a reservation?"
We said "No."
She then said "There's nothing I can do for you tonight" and
TURNED AWAY FROM US.
We asked her to elaborate and she turned back around, telling us
they would be full at 8. We could have easily eaten in that amount of time!
Also, we checked OpenTable online on my iPhone and they had reservations
for 9:15 available!!! Umm, News Flash- some people will wait at the bar for
2 hours with their friends on a Friday night. Granted, some absolutely won't.
But she might have simply mentioned the possibility. Of course, some people
don't show up for their reservations, so maybe we could have been on
"stand-by" at the very large, comfortable bar they have.
ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC TREATMENT.

Well, we knew she was simply a rude idiot, so we tried again, WITH a reservation.
The hosts were not very friendly or welcoming this time either, but we got a seat,
and our server was a bit flighty, kind of like a young, spaced-out record-store employee,
but the food was AWESOME. I especially love the burnt habanero salsa, the ground beef and pickle tacos, and the enchiladas.

We have returned several times since. We met a waitress working there who
we recognized from New York. She was super-cool, with a laid-back vibe, yet
her service was spot-on. And the food has been delicious every single time.

So yeah, the hosts never greet you very warmly, and we've never been thanked
by anyone near the door on our way out, either. But we don't let it bother us,
we just go fo the good food. The reason I make such a big point though, in regards
to their greetings, etc., is because I spent 7 years working in the Restaurant biz
in NYC, so I really scrutinize these things...

I was here on Friday night for a buddy?s b-day party. It was okay, the atmosphere was nice and the service was satisfactory. Beware to spend money at this place!! I was shocked to find out that you have to pay extra for chips and salsa, isn?t that complementary at Mexican places usually??? If you are a person that likes a Margarita with your Mexican dinner be prepared to pay a pretty penny for it, and they?re not very big?
Let?s put it this way, my girlfriend and I had 2 Margaritas a piece, I had 2 of the famous beef and pickle tacos (not bad), and she had an order of beef taquitos. Both dishes did not have rice and beans, you have to pay extra for that, and of course the chips and salsa. Our bill was $77.68 not including tip??? What???
You be the judge?

Went to Malo on a Friday night looking to score...some err, exceptional margaritas and something to eat. Was told the restaurant doesnt open til 6 and was directed to the bar. Great! Just in time for happy hour. Hmm, some happy hour. House Margies for 5 bucks and chips you gotta pay extra for. So far so bad. Barged into the dining area at 6 pm on the dot and had to wait for them to seat us. Okay so go ahead and charge me for the chips. The salsa was good in my opinion but I asked for spicy so not sure if they had more than one type. I wasn't going to pay another 3 bucks for a cup of salsa to find out. Service was spotty. I hate places where you order from one person and someone else brings everything to your table and has to make sure who ordered what. Tables were small with no room to spread out anything. Romantic? Sure I couldn't see anything. I wonder what kind of food the dim lighting disguised. Anyhow, the food was decent. I had the carne asada, with the sides of rice and beans. Heard the beef and pickle tacos are the popular item but was told they aren't really the greatest thing in the universe. Overall, with the slow service considering the place was just getting started up and empty, the pricey and small drinks and the ala carte food which ain't cheap either, I couldn't say this place is worth a trip out of my way to go back. It was decent. But definitely not the best place in the area.

This IS the place to go on a first date! The hostess Nicole treated us like celeb's and was very converstaional and helpful. Then when we came back weeks later Nicole rememberd us and gave us the same table again! The food is great! The prices are very low for what you get. This is a very impressive and hip spot. You'll feel like an insider for going here.

Best potato tacos & chicken/pork--my friends argue that the pickle beef are better. It's an ongoing fight. They also have great mojitos & a great happy hour at the bar. Their salsas are great also but super spicy in a cold burn sort of way. Best salsas. Nice mellow atmosphere.

Malo has the best authentic Mexican food. You can taste the love that went into the food with its authenticity. When you are there you have to order the beef and pickle taco....it's Great. They have a vast selection of drinks that you will want to take your time before you order your usual, becuase going to Malo you don't want to be usual. When it gets busy the service can be a little slow, but nothing to really complain about. It's fun being there and would want to go back again and again.

I love this restaurant!! Everything on the menu is good, and I love the ambiance. I've recommended this restaurant to a few people before, who came away wondering why I rave so much about it . . . if you order the traditional Mexican fare, you will be satisfied but probably won't be blown away. However, there are 3 MUSTS to order while at Malo: 1) start with white sangria (best I've ever had) and 2) an order of habenero cream sauce & chips, and some guacamole to cool it down (the sauce is spicy). Finally, order 3) SHRIMP DIABLO for your entree! It's my favorite dinner. The entrees don't come as combos, so if you want rice and beans you need to order it on the side, but you can share between 2 people (have one person oder rice, the other beans, and share). They also have a HUGE selection of tequila and serve cucumber water with your meal. The only drawback can be the service, which has been annoying about 50% of the time (waited on by emo hollywood hipsters, who annoy me to no end), but it's worth it.

Pros: parking, shrimp diablo, habenero cream sauce, white sangria, cucumber water

Cons: service
