.

The Elegant Stitch has been serving the cross-stitch and needlpoint needs of many San Francisco Bay Area needleworkers as well as those in Modesto and its environs for many years. They have recently moved to a new location at 664A Britto Court (which I haven't yet visited), but I'm sure it will be as wonderfully organized as their old shop on McHenry Ave., which was a visual delight.
Lois Mouriski, the owner, tries to get in new things as soon as they are released at Market, and her stock of threads, patterns, linen and canvasses is second to none. The threads especially are wide-ranging, with lots of overdyed specialty threads from many manufacturers.
The service I have had there is also world-class. Someone knowledgeable is always around to help you select a project or threads to work one, find the right colorways for a particular linen ground, or just to chat about what you're working on.
Twice a year Lois puts on a stitching weekend featuring a new project. Although I haven't gone myself, I have seen the needlework of friends who have participated, and the projects are always lovely. The whole weekend has a theme, and participants are given little gifts throughout the 2 days relating to it. It's more like a stitching retreat, only with something new to do and new friends to make.
My only complaint is that Modesto is so far from where I live that I don't get to the Elegant Stitch as much as I would like to. (Still, perhaps that's a good thing for my budget!)
