I was asking this company to move my small office with 2 office rooms. It's a small software company with some tables (most of them can be folded), some boxes with documents, and some old PCs, monitors and 4 empty shelves (since I already packed). The only heavy stuff is an APC battery.
It was Saturday and they came 45min late. Since my office is already packed, I had to wait in my car outside in the parking lot. I tried to contact to their office, but nobody responded.
Finally, 3 of them came and as soon as they come in my office, they immediately said I have too much things to move. Actually, it was only 1/3 of their truck at the end. You can imagine how much things a small software house can have.
When we made the appointment with their company, we agreed the work is 2hrs for $120, and $60/hr for any additional hours. I knew the job won't exceed 2 hours. After they came in, they immediately told me I have to pay $200 including tips, otherwise, they cannot do the job. They said they at least need $20 for each person, and another $20 for the office lady. Usually I pay reasonable tips, but I hate people force me to pay tips, especially they require upfront and scared me they will drop the job if I don't follow. Also, they said if they move very slowly, I will end up to pay 3 hours. The amount would be same. You know, my lease was going to expire the next day. I was even thinking to pay another month rent but don't let these guys to move. The office was not leased out either way and I was affordable to do so. I guess the landlord would allow me to do so. I called their company to ask their tip policy, and this time it went through. I explained the situation, but their company told me they cannot do anything. I asked the lady to talk directly to the workers, but she refused. She said the only thing I can do is either asking them to do, or don't ask them to do. She cannot help anything with them.
Since it is for a company, paying $200 is really not a big deal. But I felt very uncomfortable being forced to pay tips and especially they scared me that they will not do the job if I don't follow. I told them I need to ask my wife whether we should reschedule. Then they immediately told me they are leaving, and then walked away, packed their truck's lifter and drove away. My wife asked me to bear with it, I think the money is really not a big deal for me. Even though I had thousands of uncomfortable, by thinking the time to deal with the landlord, rescheduling a new moving company, so I ran outside, called them back very loudly since the truck is running away already. The job got done, but I felt I got raped.
