I've been a member of Gold's Gym in Mt. View since the late 80's. I'm a regular and well known in the gym. Most of the people I know and talk to very much appreciate and like our gym. The old saying about not being able to please every body all the time obviously applies. Most places don't get the praise for doing a good service but you always hear about the negative stuff and complaints. Human nature I guess. I thinks it's only fair to counter any resentment towards this facility with a equally Positive and glowing review. This gym is very spacious and has a good mix of old (tried and true) and new equipment. Seldom is a piece of equipment out of order or in need of repair. Selection of free weights and dumbbells is vast. There is frequent cleaning of equipment with a bucket of disinfectant on a regular basis. The bathroom/locker room is clean and well maintained. Hygiene consideration is unfortunately an individual decision. Bringing a towel is a necessity and helps to insulate you from much of this. For someone looking to join a gym I would highly recommend this facility. The decision to join a gym needs to be researched for all their benefits as it apply to you. This is an old school hard core weight room. Yes, there are various classes and a wonderful cardio selection but the vibe is weight room focused. This is not a fluff gym and may not be for you. Figure out what you want from a gym and shop around. This is an excellent facility and one that has stood the test of time. After 25 years in business this Gold's has been doing it right.

Totally dissatified with Northland Mall Gold's Gym, the service sucked and everytime I went most of the machines were not working correctly.
And if you cancel because of their lack of service, and have not finished your terms they charge you another $199, plus any service that you requested for Personel Training is not refunded either, even their PT service is ever changing, you might like the trainer you signed up wtih, doesn't necessarily say they will be they are there at the end of you training payments because of the ever changing staffing they have.
Also, trying to get any info out of the people that work there is impossible.
Don't recommend this gym at all!!!!

I was a member of Gold's Gym in Mountain View for almost 7 years. The first 4 years were heaven. The signup was pressure-free - one set, honest, fair price for everyone, none of these hidden car-dealership like "deals" that other gyms subjected me (egads, 24hour fitness was a horror!) The gym was friendly, comfortable, clean and had a kick-ass kickboxing instructor, a great yoga instructor, and nice suite of equipment.

A few years ago, my favorite kickboxing instructor left and I found I gradually stopped going as regularly.

Then, in 2007, I tried to cancel my membership because I found myself not using the facility. It was *impossible* to do so. First I went to the gym and tried to cancel on the premises. I was told I needed to cancel through the head office, and given a phone number to fax some supposed note of cancellation to. I don't have a fax machine. Finding one seemed next to impossible, so instead I tried the website, calling, everything. Not possible. Then I tried getting my credit card to stop payment. Not possible.

Now, more than a year later, with more than a year of $40/month payments and no gym usage, I've found a free online fax service to fax in my cancellation notice.

I've gotten no reply to my fax. I was told that to find out if it worked, I should wait a week and then call back my local gym. I've tried three times now to call my local gym - this last time someone answered the phone and told me that it was 10 min past closing and the computers were off and I should call back during business hours.

The cancellation policy Gold's employs strikes me as borderline illegal, clearly unethical. Think twice before signing up.

For $29 per month, this place is great. It has an outstanding selection of equipment, ample space, nice atmosphere. It is a basic gym - no jacuzzi or steam bath, but decent locker rooms. Not sure what the other reviews are all about, but anyone who thinks that any gym is theft free is a bit out of touch with reality. If you want to work out at a good gym that is not crowded, this is great place.

I've been a member of Gold's since 2004.

Recently, there was a break-in at the Mountain View location when the staff just let someone in without checking to see if they were a member. The staff was totally unsympathetic and the owner did NOTHING to improve "security" to make sure this didn't happen again. (I use the quotation marks because it's so easy to simply walk into the gym.) The manager didn't even warn his STAFF that a theft had occurred.

I'm sad to leave this gym, even though it is old and dated, because it did have a good selection of weights.

I'm not surprised by the other posts. I love the Gold's franchise, but the McCall group tarnishes that reputation.

Untill just recently, I worked out at the cambell location and overheard the owner of Gold's Gym, Jerry McCall, speaking to the club manager, Jose sandoval. As they were talking about their suffering membership retention and growth, Jerry exclaimed that his members are too "stupid to realize" that he has to invest money into his business and therefor he has every right to raise their rates. the convesation went on about how to make people sign up on their first visit as a guest by lying to them, or trying to mentally beat them into purchasing a "premium" rate; Jerry's highest priced membership options. If you have been to any of these Gyms, you'll know that a huge majority of the equipment is as old as the clubs themselves and the staff has no idea how to fix the equipment. If Jerry ever makes any changes, it's a bit of paint here and there, but when it comes to the important stuff, like updated locker rooms, accomodation with the television programs and most of all, the upkeep of the equipment, this company embarasses the Gold's Gym name. I recently signed up at 24 hour fitness and love it. Don;t let the hype get to you, you're better off at a professionally organized gym than Jerry's mom-&-pop style managed meat-head-where-houses.

I have been a member of Gold's Gym for a long time and have worked out at all locations. The equipment is poorly maintained by one maintenance person who is spread out over the 5 locations. Machines are constantly breaking down and the rate always go up. If you want to see terrible moral in staff behind the counter, make sure you see the sad faces of the people who work at Gold's gym. Jerry McCall takes advantage of anyone who does anything good for him and he has lost some of the best people I have seen in his management ranks. Thsi guy should realy be reported soon for his horrible business ethics and the way he treats his customers and employees.

wow! what an improvement both in and out. No more long chain of cars dangerously snaking out on el camino, or parking in the funeral home's parking lot (heebee jee bees!)

nice spacious, CLEAN, light gym. Better ventilation and less Sweaty -sneaker smell inside. Lots more classes and less wait lists. last year had to wait 6 months before getting into the next level's at the same time/day slot. keep prices reasonable please!

I'm currently a member at 24-Hour Fitness, and miserable. I was a member of Gold's Gym for 7 years, but switched after moving to the other side of town. One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made in my life.

Gold's constantly and consistently adds capacity to meet growing membership size. They also stock the latest and most modern equipment available. Finally, they have knowledgeable staff, as opposed to 24-Hour Fitness sales people who are overweight and have no idea what fitness is.
