I sat a the sushi bar and enjoy a couple of rolls. Both of which were good. Service was good and the chef was friendly. But nothing stood out about this restaurant for me.

Pros: Good

Cons: average

I live in North Beach and I come here probably three times a week. Food is good - it's great for vegetarians, they have a veggie sushi plate which you will never find anywhere else. Reasonably priced for mid-sized portions. Excellent service - Katsu, the owner of the restaurant, always greets and talks to his customers. I like the atmosphere a lot, it's never noisy. And it's never super busy, but if you're going with a large group, you should make a reservation. Taking everything into account - HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!

Pros: Food, fast service

i like this place but actually havent been there in a while as i dread parking in north beach. i always order the special which comes with a salad, shrimp/veggie tempura, salmon teriyaki, a few pieces of tuna sashimi, california rolls and rice. Uber food for like $15. Also like their foie gras over tuna sashimi. It's a small, cozy place- good eats.

I wanted to like this place since i live in north beach but i was far from impressed. It has a nice small cozy atmosphere but their food lacks anything to be excited about and is dull on flavor and fish quality was only ok. We tried a few of their special rolls which were only ok. Sake was alright as well. Service was pretty fast. I won't be returning though as I don't think there's anything worth going back for.

Pros: on columbus

As fervent sushi lovers we were deeply disappointed by our eating experience in this so-called sushi paradise... the waiter claimed that sushi was 'too expensive" for him, thus he knew close to nothing about it... to the extent that he claimed that the disgustingly GREENISH UNAGI (eel) he served "should probably look that way...". Our appetite which was tempered by the garrish surroundings and so-so service to begin with, vanished completely after one careful nibble from the suspicious dish... NOT TO BE REPEATED !!!

Pros: none we can imagine

Cons: lack of freshness, high price, unexperienced staff

I agree, this place is a great spot for sushi in NB. Its cozy and the chefs make you feel at home when you come in. If you are looking for a place to be seen, this isn't it, but if you just want a nice dinner and good sushi- this is it!

This place is great. The reviwer is obviously needs a flashy setup in order to give something a good rating. The sushi is always fresh and the staff is always frinedly. Katsu is adventurous in his menu and always tries to get you to try new things. He makes it an experience. If you want flashy go elsewhere. If you want friendly, delicious and fresh than this place is tough to beat.

...N. Beach sushi is good. It's been my place of choice for awhile, along with Kabuto. Fresh fish, prepared with care, and a nice sake selection, which is not overpriced. It's a lot better than the ones that seen to attract the big followings in SF.

It's not an event/posin' sushi place. It's more like what you might expect from your neighborhood sushi place in Japan, with a little American flair (after all, the 'hood here is N. Beach, not Namba).

Ok, I never eat overly ambitious combination rolls and didn't have any foie gras (hmmm) but the hamachi was spot on, and they often had some great obscure fish selections that you rarely see at the groovy-ace-mom-rock-chardonnay sush bars. Katsu-san is a good guy, too, and quite a character.

Cons: parking, decor

Great sushi place if you don't require expensive neon lights and 45 minute waits. Service is good, fast even, and the sushi is solid. Have not tried non-sushi, but on the Friday night I visited, many of the other customers seemed satisfied. Good low-maintenance sushi alternative in an attractive setting.

I always order the same thing when I visit this excellent place: Chef's Choice Sashimi. It is never the same! I always get a new assortment of delicious 12 pieces sashimi in always changing plate layout. These are very reative sushi chefs! The owner Katsu-san and everybody else are always friendly and know a lot about Japan, its cuisine and the SFO area.

This is a consistently good local spot. Nothing too noteworthy, but great if you are just looking for some quality sushi.

Pros: Fresh Sushi, Not hard to get a tab, Very Fast Service

Cons: Menu not that creativ

Editorial from

Chef-owner Katsu Matsuda doesn't offer any fish or seafood unless it is sweet and fresh, and he serves some of the best sushi and sashimi in the city out of this casual North Beach eatery. Creamy hamachi, barbecued unagi and pristine fresh…
