On a clear day or night, the view is sensational. The food is expensive and unexceptional, but not awful. Service has always been excellent.

Skates On The Bay is pleasantly located overlooking the bay. The atmosphere is pleasant, the food is good but a little pricey, but I guess you're paying for the view.

One of the most overrated resto in the Bay Area... purportedly with great views, but on a foggy night (which happens quite often) you wont see anything. Everything was expensive, and my duck was too salty, too tough, and too greasy.

Skates has been one of my favorite place for food, drinks, and sunset... There is a pier right next to the restaurant you can walk on and appreciate the view of the bay... Love it!

A friend and I decided to stop in for a glass of wine after a walking . This was around 2:00 PM on a Sunday afternoon, while she was freshing up I got us a table in the bar.

The waitstaff and bar tenders were not interested in serving; why I don't know? I notice that the food servers were inexperienced with handling large orders and suffer from lack of etiquette. Another food server was trying to be a balancing act that ended in disaster - spilling the food; after 2 women had waited patiently for their appetizers.

This is to follow up on an earlier review. We ate at Skates on Sept. 3, 2007 and had a very poor experience which we detailed in that review ('Nightmarish Experience for Newlyweds'. )
I wanted to create a special night for my new bride and myself and planned the evening to make that happen. Their neglect of our reservation, wait time and patience ruined the ambiance I had wanted. We did not get to enjoy the view of the sun setting over the bay, since we were seated an hour later than our reservation.
Skates became aware of our dissatisfaction and offered to ameliorate the situation. They promised to send us a gift certificate for our next visit. It never arrived.

They provided a nightmarish & very un-special experience for newlyweds!! Skates has been a favorite of ours for years & we decided it would be perfect for our first "married" dinner out. We made our reservations more than a week ahead of time. We specified that we were newlyweds and we would like a window table. We arrived 45 minutes before our dinner reservation so we could enjoy appetizers & drinks in the bar. When we arrived, the greeter at the front desk congratulated us on our marriage-We reminded him of our desire for a window seat, and let him know we would wait in the bar. As our reservation time approached, we saw a table emptying and assumed it would be made ready for us... But, they sat a family there and so we waited....10 or 15 minutes AFTER our reservation time, we asked about our table and were told we would need to wait "a little longer" for a window table (!! what? we had reservations, we had been there already for an hour waiting patiently, we saw them give a window table to a group of people who were not there waiting as long as we had...). We waited 50 minutes for a table! By the time we sat down, the sun had set and the ambiance we had planned for was gone. They completely ruined what was supposed to be a very special occasion for us. One note: a manager was sent over to our bar table about 40 minutes into our extended wait... she started to apologize for the mix-up, and I assumed she would attempt to make us happy-she started to say something about entrees &asked if we had ordered appetizers & my husband responded, "we have already paid our bar tab", which strangely made her say, "oh, you don't want to stay for dinner now?"--that was the end of it. They seated us, & made no price adjustment on our bill, which was what she was implying she was going to do.
As reasonable people, we understand that mix-ups happen..but their error was compounded over and over and everytime they had an opportunity to make good, they did not take it.

Pros: Usually great! love the ambiance, food, view....

Cons: When it counted most to us- they didn't deliver and they didn't make it right

.

Yes the ahi tuna sushi is fantastic. The service was very unsatisfactory. When our server served us,she very sarcasticly said "Enjoy!" Then, directly after our dishes were delivered, the young lady who served us went up to another waitress and said something directing her attention to our table. She did this with 2 other waitresses that i witnessed who all looked directly at our table as well. The girls all laughed and looked as if they were suprised to hear what the server had told them. We got the impression that our food had been tampered with so we refused to eat it and demanded new food.Naturally, we were paranoid about all the attention our table was getting. It was a very bad experience, i haven't been there since.

We had reservations so we got seated right away, but it took the server over 25 minutes to acknowledge us. Ordered the Skates Classic Sampler and it was great, but the price not so much. For $21 you were able to have a taste of three awesome appetizers. For an entree I ordered the New York Steak and it was horrible. I ordered it medium well and it came way past well done. I mean this thing was burnt. I thought it was just the edges and saw that our waitress was busy so I decided to just try to eat it. Our waitress was horrible. Took us about 15 minutes just to ask her for some steak sauce, which should have been brought with the steak in the first place; and she never checked up on us once. [I got home and cut a piece of steak for my dog, she chewed on it for a while and threw it back out; and my dog eats everything!!] For a two person dinner it came out to ~$115 for one appetizer, two entrees, a beer, 17% tip, and tax. I say if you are going to go here ? sit at the bar, order yourself a few drinks and the Skates Classic Sampler, and call it a night.

Pros: Views, Environment, Free fococia bread, Skates Classic Sampler

Cons: Service, Steak, Prices

.

The food here is decent, but way too expensive.... you could find better seafood in the Bay Area for much less money. The view is beautiful, but not worth the prices. The decor could use an update.

Cons: price & decor

Obviously you're coming here for the view. I've been here several times, and the service has been great. Each server has been attentive but not overbearing. Would be better if they personally knew the menu in detail and could make definite suggestions, but whatever. The food has been pretty good, not great. I suppose it is slightly overpriced if you look at it that way. My personal thing is that I'm going here for the view and whoever I'm with, the rest is secondary.

We arrived to find they'd lost our reservation (they blamed their computer - don't they always?). They kept us waiting in the bar for almost 45 minutes for a table, even though there were clearly plenty of tables free when we did finally sit down. The hostess was totally unapologetic for this, so I assume this was a ruse to get us to buy more drinks.

In short, our experience before we even got any food almost spoiled the entire evening for us.

The food, when we finally got to eat any, was variable. Crab cakes were good, but over-priced. Oysters not very fresh, and the condiment sauces were pre-applied to try to hide this. One of the four main courses was almost completely cold when it arrived. Vegetable accompaniment to the main courses was over-cooked.

This is the second time I've been here. I didn't have the table trouble the first time, but the food was extremely disappointing on that occasion as well. I made the mistake of giving them a second chance.

Would I recommend these clowns to a friend? Hell No!

Cons: Poor service, variable food quality

The food at Skates is on par with room service at any Marriott-type hotel in any midsize city in the US. If you're a foodie, stay away. Yes, the view is fantastic. But that's about all Skates has to offer that is in any way different. For a better value, have a drink at Chevy's down the street in Emeryville, which has the same view, then head to one of Berkeley's real restaurants for a food experience worth your money - anywhere on North Shattuck (near Vine) ought to do.

Nice view all around. My fiance took me there for my birthday the first time, and we had a great seat by the water, though it was busy. But the waiter was nice, and the Prawns with rice and veges were great. The second time, we sat inside because it was really busy, but the people were nice again. And the food this time around was just as good. If you like sweet and flavored dishes, try the Salmon with caramalized berries, it's not on the main menu but try it if you see it as a special. We loved it and we're going back there again!

On a Sunday at noon, with no reservation we were immediately seated at a window overlooking the bay. I got the best perfectly made (no "mix") Bloody Mary. Perfect hair o'the dog. A cheese omelette, perfect potatoes and toasty foccacio bread completed the breakfast. I have lived here almost a year and never been, but Skates saved my life from the worst hangover I have ever had. I really don't think there is anywhere else in the east bay serving bloody mary's with a breakfast/brunch menu, so I know I will be back and hopefully not as hungover as I was yesterday! Next time I want to eat without wearing my sunglasses! I highly recommend! By the time we left around around 1:15 there was a line of about 8-10 people, so I would call ahead next time just in case!

Skates on the Bay is located right on the water front at the Berekeley Marina, so the views are great. My company is located close to this restaurant, so when we have people not from the area come to visit, we always reccomend this place. And it's funny, because I've found that people not from the area love this place. But people who actually live around here don't think it's all that great. Don't get me wrong, the food is alright, but I don't think it's anything spectacular. I feel like for a seafood place, a lot of the dishes are heavy. They taste good, but I can literally feel my arteries hardening with the grease, cheese, and fat. I would go here for drinks though to enjoy the view.

Somehow, the starters here are always good(but unoriginal) but when it comes to entree it comes up way short. My risotto was terrible, NOT RECOMMENDED. Very bland, not thorougly cooked, and the seafood in it was horribly bland too. However.. when it came to the service, it was.. interesting. It was somewhat unprofessional, but nevertheless enjoyable. The staff was very accomodating and friendly, brought out candles/lighter/plates for our cake, sorted out confusion on the bill. All in all, not recommended simply bc the food is overrated and not worth it. Service was great. :)

We've been going to Skates for over 3 years now, they have delicious food and great service. They also recently renovated their kitchen. My recommendation is to make reservations in advance. It's the perfect spot for a romantic dinner occassion. I've gone there for anniversary and birthday dinners. I normally just make my reservations through OpenTable.com and include a note for a table by the window right as the sun is going down. Also, if you arrive before your reservation, you can take a walk along the pier that runs along the side of the restaurant before your dinner to unwind and if you leave at night you can sometimes see a family of racoons along the rocks.

Skates on The Bay is a really classy restaurant. My husband took me there on Valentines Day and I was so enthralled by the beautiful views the restarant has of the bay. It was just fun to see people parasailing by. The food was very good as well and the service was excellent despite the fact that it was busy with customers that day. The restaurant was also beautifully decorated.

We went on a Saturday night after a Cal football game, so the place was packed and perhaps not at its best. The place was too noisy for relaxed conversation and we were seated far from the windows and couldn't enjoy the view at all. The server was quite good, but he had too many tables to be attentive. The food was uneven in quality, though artfully presented. All in all, a poor value. Bring your own wine if you go, the mark-up was outrageous.

I'm a local so I want so badly to like this place. Recently we booked a large group for a special brunch at Skates. Our food came out in batches, about 25 minutes apart, so by the time everyone got their orders, everything was cold. Turns out the "dishwasher broke" but why wouldn't they tell us this earlier? And not apologize? It's sad really...

the waiter told me that he ran out of focacia bread but other wiaters gave to other people who walked in later than us!
we had to change order 4 times because "we ran out of that dish today" and waited nearly an hour to get our food
usually Skates isn't like this but the fact that they don't even think about accomodating for us that day got me upset
even the dishes that came out was substitued with whatever they had left over.
look, if you ran out of asparagus don't substitute them with brocoli. if you don't have 80% content of the menu, you guys should not take any more customers. Please...
bottom line, don't go there for a bit late dinner, make an appointment for at 6 or 7 but not 8:30
and if happen to go there just sit at the bar and order bar food

My husband and I have been going to Skates for years! Sometimes we get dinner or sometimes we hang out in the bar with a drink and wait for the sunset.
Everytime we go, it is like being on a mini-vacation. The view is incredible, the food is wonderful and the service has been great.
Although I'd like to keep this place all to myself, I would highly recommend that if you are in the area to stop by.
The view in itself is worth a million bucks!

This would be a perfect place if the dining room were half the size. The view is one of the best you'll find. The food strives to be upscale. And the staff is very friendly, if inattentive. But the whole experience feels scripted, and the staff going through the motions. With as many tables as they have to serve, it's probably impossible to make it feel personal. Too bad.

We were recommended to Skates and can't believe we've been around the bay area and didn't know of this goldmine. The service was great from the host to the busser who actually said hi and bye. The view is the best I've ever seen. We will now be recommending this restaurant to everyone we know.

My wife joined me for drinks at Skates and we decided to have dinner. It was incredible from salad to (I can't believe we ate it) dessert. There was a lot of food and we just kept on eating. It was too good. We truly dined and not just had dinner.

My wife joined me for drinks at Skates and we decided to have dinner. It was incredible from salad to (I can't believe we ate it) dessert. There was a lot of food and we just kept on eating. It was too good. We truly dined and not just had dinner.

Pros: Ambiance, Service, Scratch margaritas

.

My family just moved to the East bay and my neighbor told us we had to go to Skates and we will return again and again. The food was innovative but not quirky and my daughter(vegetarian) was impressed by having food on their menu and the chef came by to make sure everything was great. As we left a manager genuinely cared about our experience and thanked us and told us to call him for our next reservation, Mark. We'll call

We just heard that Skates is now open on Saturday for their brunch. The only problem we have is whether we go Saturday or Sunday or both. We've been there for dinner too and our favorite is brunch. They have the best bloody mary's and everything we've tried is excellent, the homeade bread is worth it.

We've now been five times and have we been taken care of; food. and service impeccable(one small glitch). I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know and have even told my mother she has to dine there. I'm not sure where some of the other reviewers have dined, it certainly wasn't at Skates!!!

A group of friends traveling from S. Cal to N. Cal eating our way through the "dining capitols of the world" were pleasantly surprised by how great this restaurant is.

Now we've achieved nirvana. We came here because some fiends were wowed, so were we. My wife is a vegetarian and not only do they have vegetarian items, they also have vegan. WOW!!!
The food, servce and wines were great. Food expensive and worth it, the wines were cheaper than any restaurant I know.

Been here a few times both in small and large parties. Every time service is terrible, very terrible. Food is way overpriced for what you get. Avoid actually eating here, just go for the view and have a drink at the bar instead.

I had lunch with a group of 8. The view of the bay is amazing and the service was excellent. I imagine it would be perfect for a romantic dinner at sunset.

We went to a Cal game last weekend and had a better time eating at Skates than our victory over UCLA. The food was great and those margaritas were incredible. The prime rib and garlic prawns were so good that I want to go back just for them. This place is a must!!!

I have come here several times, and i always find that service at the bar is great. Although it gets pretty packed on the weekends, the bartenders drinks are always quick and they make sure you get your food quick. I had something called a "East meets West Mojito" which was great. Also, you can't beat the view!

Several trips to this TGI-Fridays-on-the-Bay merit a warning: Of three attempts we had one edible entree and two entrees removed from the bill. We persisted because we're patriotic locals. The removed items included a $40 fresh (frozen) rock lobster tail cold and translucent on one side, overcooked and leeched on the other. A re-fire got no better results. My equally persevering companions got old, cured salmon misrepresented as "smokey-flavored" fresh (!) and a leathery
prime rib. Don't eat unless it's a group outing for Cobb salad & nachos, the kind of outing that seemed exotic in high school.

The seafood goes with the Bay views, but turf entrees such as rock salt roasted prime rib are also fair bets. Don't pass up the drink list---it features a variety of cocktails and international wines.
