This is an incredible bakery, but not in a super fancy, chi chi sort of way. These are hearty, crumbly, chewy delicious goods like you wish someone at home would make.

When I am in the mood for fabulous baked goods, or when I need to pick up items for British-style afternoon tea, I go on over to Arizmendi. First stop, the scones. They are tasty, large sized and made with wholesome ingredients. My current favorite: Chocolate Walnut. Next, sandwich bread. They have a few varieties of excellent foccacia, as well as batard, rolls and baguettes. The asiago rolls are superlative! Lastly, shortbread cookies. The ginger shortbread are out of this world! I cannot attest to the pizza, but I hear it's pretty great.

The downside - most items are sold by the pound, so you are never sure exactly how much you will spend. And they don't take credit cards.

By the way, if you decide to sit and enjoy the goodies on the premises, they have a decent variety of teas, and their coffee is good.

Arizmendi is, flat out, the best bakery to plan your day to. Here's what I mean,
Breakfast - Cup of peets across the street and Arizmendi's Yummy corn cherry scone, oat scone, maybe even their vegan banana walnut muffin....
Lunch - How about an Asiago roll or a a choice of their fresh Baguettes to acompany some of their delighful cheeses....
Dinner - Order a half baked daily special pizza (all of 'um are so yummy) and you are good to go!
Desert - can't miss with the chocolate fudge cake!
See what I mean!?!?

PROS: Close your eyes and just pick, you can't miss. Grab a tissue first!
CONS: Some areas close early on certain days.....

Arizmendi is a great bakery that has breads, sweet baked goods, and one style of vegetarian pizza on sourdough bread (toppings change everyday). I go there for the pizza and scones. If you've been to the Cheeseboard, this place will look very familar. It's practically the same, but not as crowded and Arizmendi's tends to be open more days. If you find Cheeseboard is closed (as it often is), definitely go here and you won't be disappointed.

Almost everything I've tasted from Arizmendi has been very good. On top of the everyday favorites (muffins, scones, city and suburban bread), there is a posted rotating schedule of items, and pies change by season. There is plenty of variety in their offerings, and they also sell ancillary products (cheese, jam, lemon curd). Most of the tables are occupied by people eating pizza, though--each day features a different vegetarian pizza, and I've never seen one that hasn't looked great. The tea is overly weak and the coffee isn't very good, but that's not why you come here anyway.
Arizmendi is a co-op, which means they close early on Mondays (for meetings) but each and every employee cares about his/her job. The service is always good, though the shop can get crowded.

PROS: Oat scones; pizza; watching people make bread
CONS: Parking on Lakeshore; crowds

Do you need fresh bread or pastries to impress your friends at a dinner party? How about just breakfast? Arizmendi is a bakery cooperative that has a limited, but delicious selection. For sweet things, try the chocolate roll, and for something more hearty, try the asiago roll. They also have various vegan muffins and breads.

I think someone who went here just for the pizza would be disappointed. It is fabulous pizza, but you don't get to pick your toppings, and there's only one kind per day. However, the baked good really steal the show. Check Atkins at the door and enjoy the wholesome, delicious breads, scones, cookies, and other lovely treats. The Lakeshore branch features cheeses from Cheese Board, and I think both Lakeshore and San Pablo offer homemade lemon curd for your--gasp--fresh strawberry scone. The best part is it's a worker-owned cooperative, so you can rest assured that no one is getting (too) exploited on the premises. Yay!

I am a pizza connosieur. And not just any pizza. What Zachary's is to Chicago style. Arizmendi's is to healthy, vegetarian pizza! Eat all you want. It is rich in flavor but low in fatty ingredients.

And talk about Berkely style toppings: ricota cheese, potatoes, cilantro, lemon juice, sweet peppers; once combination every day...Keeps the suspense going and you coming back.

And there's a steady flow of baked good fans. I must admit I haven't partaked in too many of their baked goods. I'm there for the pizza. Any of friends and family who have the luck of hanging out on that day also have become instant fans.

Pros: THE PIZZA, MADE FRESH WHILE, YOU WAIT

Cons: , YOUR HUNGRY,, LIMITED SEATING

The bread here is world class - (and I should know as my family has collectively over 70 years in the baking and confectionery industry!).

Nice staff - one time I was in the cafe for hours, eating lots of pizza and drinking coffee with my friend Anne Fagan from Ireland - and the guy working there just gave us some pizza for free as it was extra! Nice!
