The waiter Josh(Tuesday evening 11/22) was EXCEPTIONAL! He was knowledgeable of the menu with recommendations on what to eat. CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS SUPERB! The food was great as well.

I miss the Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles that used to be in the same area back in the day, but this is a pretty good substitute. They have a huge menu with so many things to choose from, it makes your mouth water, and your eyes definitely become bigger than your stomache. The atmosphere is really nice, too; they have murals painted on the walls, so it gives you something to look at while you wait for the food. Which brings me to the downside: You have to wait awhile. The service isn't stellar, and the waitstaff could be friendlier, but if you want artery-clogging goodness then you should definitely try this place out.

If you are a fan of chicken and waffles, you MUST come to the House of Chicken 'n Waffles near Jack London Square. Their chicken is mouth-wateringly good... the pieces come to your table piping hot with a deliciously addictve blend of spices. The chicken meat is moist and packed with flavor. Their waffles are equally good - golden, crisp on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. Top it with their spiced syrup. YUMMY! The only downside to this house of yummy and tasty is the bill - average combo is around $8)

PROS: Deee-lish!
CONS: Pricey - service can be slow.

OK, this review is not of the food, because I could not get in the door. Several parties were taken ahead of mine. I am white, my husband is asian. You do the math.

Pros: unknown

Cons: apparently you must have a fair amount of pigment to get in the door

The only drawback about this place when I went was that there weren't enough staff on hand to handle the post-game crowd. The owner was our server and he was very cool to us. The food here is excellent, even by inherently tasty soul-food standards, and I can't put one dish above another because everything is delicious and generously portioned.

Pros: Food, Service

Cons: Had to wait for a long time for our food to come out.

Being born and raised in the Bay Area, and trying serveral ethnic cuisines Soul Food is one I just never got around to try. I just happened to stumble upon Chicken N' Waffles one lazy Sunday afternoon.... and it was a great new experience I would revisit. I would even to go to JL Square just to try something new on the menu. Mimi's plate was a great first experience...esp. if you are a lover of Macaroni N' Cheese. I wish I would of tried Soul Food a lot sooner than I did. Great Food, and Restuarant. The Sounds of Motown in the background took the cake for me.

Pros: Music playing, Friendly Service, Location

★☆☆☆☆

I had high hopes, and was looking forward to some good soul food, but was sorely disappointed. The fried chicken and collard greens weren't bad, but the rest of the food was very sub-par. Avoid the red beans (tasteless) and corn bread (dry). I ordered macaroni and cheese and after waiting 25 minutes was told that they were all out. I tried to substitute a waffle and they refused (hence leaving me with the tasteless red beans). Overall, I would not recommend this place.

I ordered a large order to go for a school event & it turned out to be a great experience. While I had to wait a little longer than I'd anticipated, it was worth the wait. The food was really good and the people who worked there were extremely friendly. I was very pleased with the way I was treated and the quality of the food.

Pros: quality of the food, friendliness of staff, family feel

★★★★☆

I ordered a breast of chicken, waffle, and grits. I also ordered red beans and rice - the food was delicious. I'd definately go back, but the service was slow. We waited several minutes for our menus and water to be brought to us. We ended up having a really great male server come and take our order. When we got him, the service was acceptable.

The prices seemed high for the sides - the small cup of red beans and rice was $3.25, for instance, but the meals seemed to be reasonably priced. Their location right at the corner of Embarcadero and Broadway is expensive rent, I'm guessing.

I'd go back, though - the chicken was moist and tender, cooked perfectly, and the waffle was very fresh and tender, but could have been crispier. Those red beans and rice, while smallish portion-wise, were so tasty.
