I paid Payless Cellular $25 per month with no minutes, just so I could have a phone in case of emergency. Of course, when I had a car accident on 9/8/08 I couldn't call for help, a tow truck, my insurance company or a friend for a ride home. For days I tried to reach PC and after about 40 minutes on hold each time, I finally got a recording that they were aware of my problem and promptly disconnected my. I then called my credit card company and told them to deny any payment to PC. I finally was able to send a fax to PC to cancel my service. Again, I have not heard from anyone at PC.

Payless Cellular's service has always been horrible, but this "power outage" is outrageous. When my phone first stopped working, I called them to find out what was going on, and they actually hung up on me. I went into the store, and realized that all of the customers were in the same boat. I went over to Verizon, and they were great. They gave me temporary number, and told me that my old number would be ported over within 48 hours. When that didn't happen, I called Verizon, and they explained that Payless Cellular BLOCKED MY NUMBER AND SENT IT TO "COAST TO COAST" WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. This prevented Verizon from porting my old number. I still don't have my old number activated. How is Payless authorized to do transfer my service to someone else, after I already switched to Verizon? I called Payless several times, and of course nobody has returned my call.

I also just received a bill in the mail for $1,102. Yes, you read that right, over one thousand dollars. My plan is for $149.99/month. I am calling the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint. Does anyone have any other suggestions. Payless Cellular should not be able to get away with this.

Per my conversation with the Verizon port request department, the telephone numbers won't be lost since they are Verizon numbers leased to Payless. Payless has told them that it will take until Sept 15th at the latest to restore service to allow numbers to be ported. When I asked about the distinct possibility that Payless has closed its doors with a big "screw you" to their customers, he told me that their legal department has also been working with Payless.

After being with Payless for years I guess it's been a Fantasy. Three cells out of service for over 7 days. Lots of BS from Fantasy and Payless. Nothing works. Went direct to Verizon, fast good service at their store. Same 2000 plus minutes each phone and saving $100.00 plus per month. Payless-Fantasy ripped me off. How about a class action? I wouldn't go back to them for free. I paid my last months bill $250.00 plus. If they try to collect on their tiny print contract, lets see if the judge can read it. P----d Off Customer

I am out of service as of 09/15/08, even after going to CF on 09/04/08 and having my number typed into a coputer and put into the "queue"- whatever that means. Can anyone tell me what is going on with CF and Payless?

Can anyone offer legal advice on cancelling with Payless? Our 4 phones have been out for 6 days now. Verizon says that Payless only rents minutes from them, and they have no authority over Payless, The verizon rep suggested maybe Payless did not pay their bill with Verizon!

Verizon also said my numbers can be ported directly to them, and they are not blocked.

I want to cancel but need some assurances we will not be liable for any cancellation fees, or any payments whatsoever after September 2. Anyone, PLEASE ADVISE!

FYI, also filed a oomplaint with the Calif PUC, but they will take their time about it. Will next contact BBB, then see if SM has any advocate, etc. But would appreciate any legal referrals. Thanks.

I've been in porting hell for about 10 days.

I'm going to call the City of Santa Monica's consumer protection division department in the city attorney's office. The number is (310) 458-8336.

I suggest those of you still frustrated follow suit.

PORT YOUR NUMBERS -- (9/8/08 Update)
Verizon Port Center (888) 844-7095. You must punch in any Verizon number to get to the prompts to reach customer service. You can't punch in your # that is held by Payless. Once you get in, ask for tier 2 support.
They ported my number within 5 minutes and were very helpful.

I have been a Payless customer for 8 years. I have built my entire business upon the cell phone number which no longer works. After receiving no response from Payless, I went to a Verizon store and purchased a new phone and contract directly with Verizon and they are trying to port my number to the new phone. I was told it would take 1 to 2 days. Does anyone know if this is going to work? I am worried because Verizon doesn't seem to be aware of the number.
That phone number is my life and business. I will post any results and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

UPDATE !!! -- Verizon was able to retrieve my number and port it. I now have a new contract direct with them.

UPDATE: Verizon told me that Payless ported my number to Coast to Coast service - so that when my service finally did come back on, it had been ported to another service. this has apparently delayed my request to port my number to Verizon.

I am waiting for Payless Cellular to switch my phone numbers from "wholesale" status, so that Verizon can port them. Verizon said this normally takes 24-48 hours but all bets are off due to the current circumstances at Payless, as to when they will get around to releasing my number.

Has anyone heard how Payless intends to compensate their customers for being w/o service for 5 days? I went to Verizon and was told it will take 5 days to port my number, and others have been ported right away? I am out several hundred dolllars after going to Verizon and signing new contracts for 2 phones and I had already paid ahead for Payless service.

I think that their lack of responsiveness and empathy has really exacerbated the situation. most customers seem extremely tolerant and patent, but I have had no explanation from Payless, no responses to my emails, and in the store there is a weird apathy about the situation.

completely unacceptable! what's even worse is that we cannot transfer to verizon direct because the line needs to be reinstated in order to transfer it! . i know that they can reinstate as i also heard of a select few being restored. i have had my line for almost 10 years & cannot afford to loose my number over some lie they are claiming was an "outage" or some "hacking" please, give me a break!

This outage is a joke! I'm without my cel phone for the last 2 days, and I cannot find the solution yet... they don't respond to my emails, no one is picking up the customer service line or no explanation about what's going on at all. The worst part is, I tried to port my number to Verizon (I thought it shouldn't be so difficult, since I'm using their service already), I was ready to pay extra to get my phone line back, and the Verizon said they cannot port my number because Payless is not releasing my phone number. Yesterday I was still willing to work with this issue. However, when I heard the message "Call back during the business hour" on Payless's answering machine, I had it. I don't know if the reason for this outage is because they went out of business, but after this, they certainly will. If anyone could successfully switch to Verizon direct, did you port your phone number as well? How did you do it?I think I still have one year left on my contract, but I consider their irresponsible act as the breach of the contract. After all this, they cannot expect anyone to pay the penalty, can they?

Update(Monday, 9/8) - So I finally talked to the customer care at both Cellular Fantasy and Payless Cellular. They said EVERYTHING should be up & running by the end of today. If not, I'm seriously thinking about taking some legal action.

I was just told by Verizon this morning that Payless will not release my cell number - I spoke to someone in the porting department - that Payless is requesting additional time, and that the problems they are experiencing may persist until September 15th. In the meantime - I haven't made one dime since last Tuesday, because this is my business number!

This outage is just outrageous. What bothers me most is the message people get when they try to call me -- that the phone is disconnected. Will try to re-sign with Verizon direct tomorrow. Anyone have any advice or knowledge about getting out of the contract with Payless? I'm certainly not going to pay $250 for each of my phones after this debacle!

We've had seven phones serviced by Payless for at least 15 years. We're pretty good customers, right? Wrong. They don't give a damn. Since the outage (going on well over two days now) have they tried to contact us, email us, do anything at all other than post a misleading notice on their Web site. Yeah, we went through that "activation routine" they described. That was seven hours ago! The liars told us two to four hours after we did the routine. Well, it's "Goodbye Payless" because they don't give a damn. I visited Cellular Fantasy two days ago and they told me the system would be fixed by morning. Yeah, sure. We've just switched to Verizon direct and others are doing the same. If you want the name of our Verizon rep (so you won't have to wait in line at one of their stores) let me know.

Payless Cellular outage has not yet been resolved for all customers today/Thursday, but a select group of customers including a friend of mine had service restored yesterday/Wednesday. They told my friend that their system was hacked into and they shut everything down to restore their security features. Fact or fable?

Agree with others - Cellular Fantasy was great with providing me hardware and buying me out of my contract with Verizon (although I was happy with Verizon) and quickly setting me up with Cellular Fantasy.

Since switching to CF 19 months ago l went from getting great reception at home to no service at home. That is a drag when you are running a home business. CF says I am just in a bad area, yet curiously my husband gets GREAT reception at home and has the same Motorola Q. The only difference is that he is with Verizon directly. They basically told me there was nothing they could do.

Then I asked if they could adjust my minutes, something Verizon will gladly do for your should your needs change. CF said they would make a change but that I would have to extend my contract for another 12 months in exchange for them making the change. I said that didn't sound very customer friendly and they hung up on me!

We as consumers have so much more power and such a great ability to help friends, family, and colleagues avoid poor service providers. We simply need to share our true experiences online, post our thoughts on sharing sites like yelp.com and of course spread the word by mouth. Thankfully we have many choices for service providers and when enough people cease doing business with CF, well you know what happens.

Let's revisit in a day or two. The service contract is very one sided but it does state that they will not take responsibility for a 24 hour outage. How about three days outage with no communication as to when the problem will be resolved? At what point are they in breach of contract and what rights do we have as consumers? Let's call Ralph Nader!

Has anyone actually had their service restored from the 9-2-08 outage? This company sucks. I've been a loyal customer for 12 years now and this is how they treat us.
Customer service won't answer the phone or e-mails, Cellular Fantasy won't answer their phones and when I went down to Cellular Fantasy in person all they did is lie to me telling me to enter the code after 2-3 hours and the phone would work.
They have no problem e-mailing to let us know our bills are ready but they won't communicate with us when there's a problem on their end. If they agree to waive the early termination fee I'm outta here. I only have 9 months left on my contract anyway and I WON'T renew. Anyone thinking about service with this company beware.

Is this cellular place maybe going out of business? Just a thought. I have never seen an outage like this. If you think you are signing up with cingular, t-mobile or verizon, you are not. I thought i was signed up with verizon and i just called verizon and they have never heard of me or my phone number. I just ended my 24 month contract and will never deal with this company again.

This service outage is totally unacceptable. Trying to reach anyone at Payless Cellular or Cellular Fantasy is totally impossible. I had to drive down to Santa Monica from Burbank to go into Cellular Fantasy and complain. There were at least 50 people there complaining about the same problem. We were all given a slip of paper with a code number on it (hit *22890 send), and everything would be resolved within three (3) hours. It is now over 7 hours later and nothing is resolved. This has to be costing other business thousands of dollars. I am very disappointed in both Cellular Fantasy (one phone line that just rings busy) and Payless Cellular whose phones ring busy or they just don't pick up. Bad way to run a business. Very poor Client Relationship Management.. I am going to look to another provider.

This cell phone service outage has now gone on over 24 hours. The message I receive when I try to use my cell phone is that I have not paid my bill, which I have paid, of course. Calls to my number tell the caller that my phone has been disconnected. After reaching a person finally at Payless Cellular who told me that this was an outage with Verizon, I can't reach anyone. The website gives no clue when this will be resolved. At least they could do is change the outgoing messages to indicate that there is a disruption in service due to technical problems so customers don't think their payment check has bounced and waste time calling the company. Beyond that, they need some redundancy in their system so this doesn't happen again.

All Verizon service has been out for nearly 24 hours! I was told yesterday, it would be resolved in 3 hours. If you call Payless Cellular or Cellular Fantasy today, it rings busy. No posting of problem on either website which is very poor. If you phone is called, automated message indicates that your number has been changed, disconnected or no longer in service.

Update - I went to CF yesterday (9/4) and they were very helpful. I think the key is to go to CF and just be patient. They will get your phone back in service more than likely. It's a bad situation, but I'm not sure they had much control over it. I believe the Payless website now has some info on it regarding the outage. Good luck everyone!

At first I was quite happy with my purchase from Cellular Fantasy/Payless Cellular. They bent over backwards get me what I wanted. But now I'm near the end of my 2-year contract with Cingular, and I want to add the iPhone. Well, it turns out I don't have an account with Cingular, I have an account with Payless, and Payless buys it's Cingular plan from ConsumerCellular, *another* company. So I asked about ending my contract-- the fee is $250! (under 200 for Cingular accounts). And they tell me that actually it doesn't end until 2 years + 24 days -- because I signed up outside of their billing cycle. Well, as I recall, I only signed up for 24 months. Not only that, but when I asked for a copy of the contract, they said it would cost $15. Somehow, it doesn't seem legal, or right.

Somehow, it doesn't seem legal, or right.

.

This company handles the payments for Cellular Fantasy. Easy to deal with. Great service. Knowledgeable phone people.

They have been very helpful to me for the last 3-1/2 years.
