Was able to get a get a same day appointment due to a last minute cancellation. Parking was a breeze. Gene greeted me with a big smile. I felt comfortable right away. I came in for a color treatment. He then suggested a slight different cut and I agreed with his vision and gave him the ok. I felt confident that he knew what he was doing. I was right. I'm totally happy with the color and the cut. I would definitely go back again. Super nice atmosphere! Price was reasonable.
I had a great experience with Gene! He gave me some excellent advice and a fantastic haircut. I really enjoyed the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and left feeling totally happy with my wonderful new haircut. I'd highly recommend Gene to anyone!
Gene saved me from pyramid head with his wonderful haircuts to thin out the bulk and shape my hair so I'm wearing it down consistently since I've grown it long. Gene's fun to talk to and a great, positive personality! I never feel pressured into having my hair cut a certain way or to buy tons of stuff. My last salon really pushed product and harped on how terrible growning my grey out would look and that it wouldn't style. Wha??? My hair, thanks to Gene, looks great...long, grey, and super stylish. Merci Gene!
Pros: Great cuts, relaxed atmosphere.
I will highly recommend Gene.
I am from New York, where I had a great stylist to whom I was very loyal. When I moved to California, I suffered through many bad haircuts, desperately searching for someone I could count on. Then, one haircut bothered me SOOO much that my boyfriend made me an appointment with Gene to fix it. I don't live in San Francisco, but I can tell you one thing for sure: You can bet I'll be here to see Gene when I need a haircut!
I have long, thick, wavy hair, and I like the "long layers" look. Gene fixed my whole horrible, boring last cut with a razor (which I had never seen before), and I felt like such a princess when he was done that I couldn't help but hug him!
I read the other reviews complaining about the razor and the attitude... well, my hair feels healthier from it and I am a new loyal customer!
Pros: excellent work
Cons: he's a busy man, so be punctual and be flexible
I have been going to Mes Amis for the past 3 years and I have nothing but praises for the level of their expertise, the friendliness of the staff and the overall feeling of spending an hour or so with good friends. Bravo Gene and company, keep up the good work. see you all soon. roch
Pros: thumbs up on everything.
WOW!!! What a great experience! I love my new fall color and cut. What a gem I found in Gene Hays at Mes Amis. Great hairdresser, great service, cool atmosphere, even easy to park! I've already gotten lots of compliments on the new "do". The products he recommend make it easy for me to make my hair look as good as when I left the salon. My search is over!
I've been going to Gene for several years, following good reviews from several other friends. I've never looked back. I always appreciate the casual atmosphere and trust him implicitly. I don't even have to say what I want, I don't even look in the little mirror that he gives me. I simply know that I will get what I want. Thanks Gene!!!
I was very dissappointed with Mes Amis, after all the positive reviews. Not only did Gene not listen to what i wanted, but ending up doing everything opposite of what I asked. It took me a year to grow out my bad haircut. Not worth the money, the attitude and the dissatisfaction.
Cons: Attitude, inability to listen
I stumbled upon Mes Amis 193 by fate. I work in the neighborhood and was needing some major highlight/color work on my hair. I decided to come and inquire about their highlight and color service. The minute I came in I was greeted with delight and respect. Having had no appointment, Gene, the owner took me in. After reading so many of the reviews here, I now understand why my experience with Gene was by fate and luck. I am very delighted with my new hair color and highlight. Gene was very candid, welcoming, and very easy going The atmosphere was non-pretentious. The services were reasonably priced with great attention to personal care. I would highly recommend Gene to anyone needing some hair color and highlight work on their tresses. I plan on visiting Gene to work on my hair regularly.
Pros: Gene is skillfull, attentive to detail, a skillful artist
Cons: Make sure you make appointments in advance
I have been going to Gene since 1995. The haircuts he has given me over the years have earned me compliments in New York, all over the US, and Europe. I'm an opera singer who travels for my work, so it's important that I have a look that's unique to me and stylish as well. Gene is always up-to-date on the latest cutting techniques and coloring methods, and he's always been honest with me about what will look best as well as being willing to give me what I want. He's a true artist, a caring human being, and he has surrounded himself with other great people in his salon. I've proudly sent numerous people Gene with wonderful results and will do so again and again.
Pros: Technique, artistry, and honesty all with a beautiful sense of humor
Cons: Gene is booked 4-6 weeks in advance
Gene is not only an amazing hair stylist and color expert, but he is the owner of this salon, and is an amazing guy to boot! I just read a review someone wrote on 6/7/07 who rated this #1 salon in town a 1-star salon, and I wanted to set the records straight. The staff has been extremely friendly to me, and it's been a great experience thus far! For the last 2 years, I've been going to Gene for my hair cut, and yes, he is booked 4-6 weeks in advance for optimal appointment slots. And yes, all the stylists are busy because they are excellent at what they do. Gene is honest and forthright about what he thinks looks good on his clients -- and I for one, appreciate his candor. He advises for and against certain cuts that I am considering, and ends up giving me a fabulous cut every time. He is also such a caring person that he ran out and fed the meter for me (with his quarters, not mine) the last time I was there to make sure that my car won't get towed. Gene, Michael (the receptionist), and the other stylists are such kind people, I don't believe there is a mean bone in their body. BTW, in case you have bangs -- no one has cut my bangs better than Gene! One advice if I may: If you are new in town, start with Gene. I wish I did.
Pros: service; the people; and great with long and straight Asian hair
Cons: not always easy to find parking depending on time of your visit
I've been going to Gene since 1990 and he is the best. Over the years I've sent probably 20 people with a variety of hair types and styles, and they've all been thrilled. In fact, my girlfriends and I have to carry business cards because so many people ask where we get our hair done. We have such a great time at Gene's that three of us book our haircuts together to make a girls' day of beauty. In fact, we even show up to hang out even if only one of us needs a cut that day!
He is a perfect professional and loves it if you bring a picture so he knows the two of you have the same vision for your hairstyle. He'll let you know what he can and can't do for your hair, and will suggest how to modify a cut to make it work for you. He makes sure not just each cut is perfect, but each hair is in it's place! He'll develop a relationship with you to make sure he knows you and can give you the style to match your personality. He's given me everything from a super-short pixie cut, to a short bob, to shoulder length hair, and I've loved it all.
I've followed Gene to 3 different salons before he opened Mes Amis. If he ever leaves the area I'll be devastated - I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair!
Pros: Great with short hair, and fine hair
Unless you like your hairstylin' mean, snotty and FULL of attitude, steer clear of this one!
I read the other reviews and found them bizarre: everyone said how friendly the salon was. Someone even used the word "laidback!". My experience was very different.
I had color and cut done a few times here with Hugh, who was always grumpy, but talented with blonde highlights. Hugh left, and I made an appointment with Gene. I arrived twenty minutes late, (BART train+traffic) apologized, and Gene glared at me - it was clear I was NOT forgiven. The he told me that because I was late, no cut, and only a few highlights. I admit: I was a bit taken aback and incredulous: could he please reconsider?? He snapped back, I don't have time to stand here and argue with you, so, make up your mind. I slunk out into the street feeling deeply bad. Then came back to apologize again for my lateness but to say I thought he'd overreacted and he'd been a bit mean. He proceeded to tear a strip off me: kept asking "What do you want me to do, aplogize to you because you were late?" and kept repeating "You know how busy I am, I'm booked out 6 weeks in advance, I don't have time to stand here arguing with you." By now, I was crying - it had been a wickedly bad day already - and I said I would be INSANE to come in and get my hair done after he'd yelled at me and been so harsh! He made it clear he couldn't care less, I was just another client, he has hundreds, he was too busy to care etc. The BEST ever though was when he said he didn't have time to stand there and play "psych games" with me and that he was not going to apologize for how he was speaking to me. So, I left, and I went to Elixir, where the staff are ANGELS - kind, lovely, ladies that know how to do hair super well. This kind of unpleasant ego trip - I'm a super star hairstylist and can act like a diva - went out with Visal Sassoon in the 80s. Too bad Gene doesn't know yet.
Cons: ummm..... everything?
I've been going to Gene at Mes Amis since 2001. People always remark on my "sassy" cut and color afterwards. But the real reason I keep going back is the fun, no-pressure atmosphere. No snotty stylists with arched eyebrows here...when Gene is on, he is ON. Why not have a good time at the stylist? I look forward to each appointment. Highly recommended.
I have been going to MesAmis since it opened and have had Gene cut my hair since 1981. You couldn't ask for a more professional stylist. He listens to his clients and makes suggestions based on your preferences. And noone does color better!!
Pros: Parking is almost always a breeze
I have been going to Mes Amis for about 5 years. I was in yesterday for my current usuall cut and highlights. people always complement my hair cut and style and those who know my hair always admire the subtlety and variation in the highlights. To others I just have pretty hair and thats how I like it. I always refer Mes Amis to people but I thought I would spread the word on a broader note. Gene makes my hair look great! if your in need of the styling muse Gene will breeze through with suggestions and mutual dialoug to arrive at a style that suits your quirks and style desires (Me I do not like my hair in my face but I want it long )
Voi La I have long hair and its not in my face. Gene worked with me and made me look good! The service is always timely, friendly, professionl. The atmosphere is urban hip. Michael always calls a day or two in advance to confirm an appt. which Is great! No Palm poilet for me. And last but not least Michael will be happy to run your quarters to your meter if you cannot!
Tiny cramped and destroyed my hair. Who are all these reviews from?
I started getting my hair cut at Mes Amis when I first moved to the city and I can't picture getting my hair cut anywhere else. Gene was not only nice, but he became a great friend.
Gene, Michael and all the Mes Amis staff are very good at what they do. They are always on top of things and, before you look in the mirror and think "hmmm, I need to get my hair cut," you can expect to get a call from Michael about your pre-scheduled appointment.
Not to mention that the atmosphere is great. Elegant, cozy, clean...
Pros: Overall quality in every aspect.
Cons: Should always have an appoitment.
Gene is fantastic. No only does he do a great hair cut and color but he makes you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. I have fine hair that is usually hard to work with but he did a great job. With so many salons in the city it is great to find one I want to stick with.
My experience at Mes Amis was nothing but amazing. I came in to see Priscilla for a complete make over. I got a haircut and color done and couldnt be happier with the results. The atmosphere and the staff makes you feel relaxed and comfertable. I have my next 2 appointments booked, and next time im getting extensions!!!!!! I highly recomend this salon and Priscilla!
I went in not expecting much. I have curly hair and no one ever gets it right. Gene is so nice and friendly made me feel at home. Priscilla expertise really made me feel like she knew about my hair. I left with a whole new look and attitude even my husband noticed. I have been singing their praises ever since. Great place to get color, highlights and a cut you can feel comfortable wearing.
Pros: Great place LOVE IT!
After reading great reviews in City Search about Mes Amis, I decided to try them, especially I work across the street. They sure didn't disappoint me! Gene is a born natural professional in both cuts and colors. I never got so many compliments from everybody about my haircut. About 5-6 people asked the phone number at work. My neighbor went to Gene too and was very happy. Then I took my mother, who was visiting me from abroad. Gene cut and colored her and made her look at least 10 years younger! She was beaming walking out of his salon. Gene is also such a caring, warm and generous person. I asked him if he could high-light it a bit more and he did free of charge, plus styled it at the end as a compliment.
I'm just so happy I found THE place for my hair.
Needless to say He's THE BEST!
I have been a client of Gene's for almost 10 years. He does exceptional colour and is just a wonderful kind and caring person. I did stray last year and tried someone else for a while. Big mistake Gene is still trying to get my hair back to its previous condition. I have been asked on many occasions by complete strangers " who does your colour" I love this guy and would highly recommend him to all. I always enjoy the friendly banter between Gene and Ron. If your looking for a good cut or colour and a fun place to hang while geting it done. MES AMIS 193 is the place to go.
We have been a client for over three years. Gene has given us a great cut every time. I would highly recommend you try Mes Ami out if you are looking for a great cut.
I've been a client for seven years, and Gene is an amazing stylist and colorist. I can't even count the number of times I've been stopped by strangers on the street or in shops who compliment both my cut and color. Gene really *listens* to what you're looking for, but gives the right combination of expert advice and creative ideas to achieve a result that makes you feel amazing. Not once have I left feeling disappointed or thinking "well, it'll eventually grow out." Plus, it's just plain fun visiting the salon. The staff is always friendly, funny, and unpretentious, and the place attracts the same - I've had incredible conversations and laughs with other clients. Most of all, Gene is someone who truly cares about his clients beyond just a haircut or color....there aren't enough adjectives to describe what a truly great person he is. I can't imagine going anywhere else.
I've gone to Hugh three times now, and each time I have been very happy with what he's done. Specifically, I have had my hair dark for a year and a half now (my natural color), but was wanting to go back to blonde-ish. He knew exactly how to transition my hair back to a lighter shade in a very subtle, yet still noticeable way. He was not like other stylists who heard me say "I want to go lighter," proceeding to give me the usual highlights. Not at all- Hugh is much more intuitive and classy!
A couple months later, I was ready to go a bit lighter again, and I've been getting so many compliments on my hair, from friends my age, to my family and even my grandmother.
I was feeling so-so about my look a few months back, but in all seriousness, I MUCH orefer my hair the way it is now that I am seeing Hugh.
Another thing you'll like about him is that he knows what will look good as soon as he looks at your face. I had gone shorter (kind of a bob), and was ready to go longer. He told me straight up that he thought I would look better wiith longer, even though i could do either. He's helped my grow it out without cutting it too much or too little. Honest input from a very talented stylist in my book=KEY! Also, the prices are quite reasonable, considering how wonderful he is. I lived in LA for a coupe years and any stylist that was better than mediocre would have charged at least twice what he charges. I HIGHLY recommend Mes Amis - haven't been with other stylists there, but I've only heard excellent reviews for everyone there (I'm just biased toward Hugh!).
Pros: very personable, talented, flexible staff
Cons: metered parking-bring lots of change!
Hugh is a great stylist. I got so much compliments from the haircut he did it for me. Most importantly, he is very consistent. I am Asian and I am very picky. He is the one who makes me happy. He is not cheap but definitely worthy.
First timer. I don't know much about hair or syling and I'm a "roll out of bed and go" sort of gal. I got Gene, an awsome guy. I really liked that this place was comfortable and NOT snobby like some other fancy salons. It was very welcoming and I was greeted with smiles. Gene was professional, friendly and genuine. It was quick which is good for busy people. Maybe a little too quick? Seemed a little rush. Despite that, I'm satisfied with my haircut and the service. Will go back again.
I've been a regular patron of Mes Amis for almost 10 years. It was highly recommended to me by a dear friend and I am so glad I took her advice. I have highlights and my hair looks GREAT ever since I've been going to Gene. The color is very natural and I get rave reviews, especially right after leaving the salon with my hair freshly styled. My hair is long and pretty wavy and nobody else has ever been able to get it as smooth & soft as Gene does. Additionally, everyone is so friendly and nice. I went for the color, I stayed for the same plus the great cuts and fun atmosphere!!
WONDERFUL STYLIST... GREAT SALON!
Mes Amis is an excellent service-friendly-always greeted with a smile type of salon. My experience in the salon, and for those friends and family I have recommended visit over the years, has been nothing but exceptional.
I've been going to Gene for more thant 10 years now. He's a fantastic colorist and stylist. I love the compliments I receive every time he does my hair. Recently I started to take my teenage daughter to Gene and she absolutely loves it. She leaves the hair appoitment with a bright smile in her face and feeling beautiful. She gets tons of compliments from her friends and classmates and keeps on trying to style her hair as "Gene does it"
I strongly recommend anyone to visit Mes Amis and give Gene a try... you won't regret it! You'll love it!
Pros: Great professionalism, casual & friendly atmosphere, best results.
Cons: Parking on the streets - hard to find sometimes (It's SF life)
HUGH is a truly talented colorist. He nails it every time. I have been to more than 5 salons in this city including Maiden Lane, Festoon, Cowboys and Angels, DiPietro Todd, and a couple of Aveda salons, switching around after disappointing or unreliable results. Hugh at Mes Amis is hands down the best colorist AND the best hair sytlist I've found in SF in 7 years. I have thick, wavey hair, and Hugh give me a sleek, shapely style every time. He is RELIABLE. Ladies-- we know how hard that is to find! Even when I'm a month overdue for an appointment, the cut still maintains its shape. But above all, Hugh understands blondes -- he gives blonde hair a BEAUTIFUL, natural, textured look. -- better than natural. You will love your hair.
I tried this place based on all the raves on citysearch and could not believe what happenned. The stylist was unprofessional, late, did not give me what I asked for, the service was rushed, and my hair was ruined by the haircut. In fact, my seven year old daughter literally cried when she saw me after the haircut. My usual stylist and all my friends were also shocked at how shaggy and frizzy my hair looked.
Pros: reasonable prices
Cons: rushed, haircuts
I moved here from elsewhere and had at least one nightmare cut before I found Gene at Mes Amis. Not only is he a genius with hair, but he's the kindest, most connected guy in town. Need a body shop? He knows someone! Looking for a job? He's got connections. Oh yes, and the hair -- Rarely a day goes by without my getting at least one compliment on my hair, and I am a "roll out of bed, wash it, dry it" kind of gal. Gene's cuts are flattering, wearable in my corporate job, but kicky enough to feel fresh and young. And the atmosphere of the salon is like family. It is tiny and homey and sassy and comfortable. Don't come here looking for posh fawning, come here to find your new best friends.
I have been going to see Gene for about 5 years now and I wouldn't dream of going to see anyone else. His cut and color is always so flatering and exactly what I want. I turned my sister on to him 3 years ago - she nows comes up from Orange County every 2 months just to get her hair done. The staff is super friendly and the salon is comfortable. Best of all, I know that I will walk out of there with gorgeous hair and a smile on my face.
I recently moved to the city from San Diego. I have never been moved to write a review before this one. I went to the same salon for the last 10 years, so needless to say, I was nervous to try someone new. After reading the reviews on Citysearch, I decided to go to Gene at Mes Amis 193. Boy did I win the jackpot! I went in "rooty and brassy" and came out with the best color and cut I've ever had.
Pros: Great cut and color
Gene was an artist, a master, a craftsman with my thin hair. Using a razor, Gene crafted a style for me that's low-maintanence and sassy. I wouldn't trust anyone else with that technique.
I've been going to Mes Amis for several years now. My hair has never been happier! After many horrendous haircuts with stylists claiming to understand naturally curly hair Gene Hayes was recommended to me and my hair is in love. The razor cut is phenomenal and with a little help from the Redken product any curly haired person should have stashes of Spin Control it can't get any better. Check out Mes Amis and you'll never have to deal with a bad cut or tacky highlights again!
I drove up from San Jose this week on a girlfriend's recommendation for a good colorist; I'm tired of stylists that can't get the right color of blonde that I want, along with a killer cut that lasts a good six weeks at least. My friend suggested I try Hugh at Mes Amis. I'm a busy girl. I'm an exec at a high-tech firm in the Valley, I don't have a lot of time to waste running around, so it needs to be worth it for me to go that far, even for my hair
Well, OH MY GOD, this is my first cut and color that is PERFECT! Hugh listened first, made some recommendations and we came up with the perfect color and cut for my face and skin tone. Not only is he a genius, but he's also really nice, as is everybody in the salon, other stylists and receptionist alike.
Now I'm not going to lie, he isn't cheap, but it was worth every penny that I spent. I consider him a bargain, since I got exactly what I want, and more. I'm definitely hooked on Hugh!
Pros: Color genius, listens to you, I didn't feel rushed
Cons: He's not closer to San Jose! That's about it!
Very disappointed after all the great reviews. Damaged razored hair is going to take a year to grow out.
Pros: offer to feed your meter;
Cons: result; rushed consultation
I drive down from Lake Tahoe once a month for a hair cut. Need I say more. It's the best haircut around.
My sister and her husband go to Gene and gave me his name when I moved to the area. I have been to him twice and can't say enough about his work. His color is great and so are his cuts. My new cut is very me and I just love what he did using the razor! My hair and my sister's is totally different and he does a great job with hers too!
I am new to San Francisco from New York. I thought that I had the best in NY but I was wrong. I have been to Hugh 3 times now through a friends recomendation and could not be happier about moving. He is a master with blonds! My hair is shiney and vibrant with lots of depth. I am getting so many compliments!
He has changed my look and had been entertaining while doing it.
I can't say enough - I am so excited!
Gene is brilliant. Amazing. Extraordinary. You couldn't pay me to go to anyone else. Seriously. I particularly love that he takes the time to talk to me and get a thorough understanding of the exact look/style/cut I am hoping to achieve. And I am always 150% pleased with the results he gives me. 156%, even. What would I do without Gene? I hope, for my hair's sake, I never have to find out.
Gene is one and he can make you one too! (Sorry, he's gay and taken everyone.) I went to him with stringy over-processed and brassy highlighted hair, and left with a shiny sophisticated coif. He really helped dry my tears and made me feel at home for this NYC-princess. Try him. He doesn't disappoint.
Pros: good value, nice people (HI RON!), close to MUNI
Cons: hayes valley?, may need to wait
I would have plenty to rave about just mentioning my too-good-to-be-true perfect shade of blonde that Hugh achieves every time I visit. But then I would be neglecting to mention all of the other fantastic aspects of a session with Hugh- smart, spot-on tips and advice; fashion savvy; entertainment (ask him about Courtney Love or Michael Ciccone- he always has funny anecdotes); and overall the highest quality and level of service. Hugh is the best and the brightest!
I have been totally obssesed with perfecting my hair colour for years. Thankfully for me , so is Hugh. His philosophy of working with your skintone ,facial features and hair type to create an overall end result is nothing less than an art form.He always reminds me of what really works and what doesn't with a healthy dose of honesty wrapped in wit. I strongly recommend Hugh for anyone who cares about looking good.
Pros: friendly environment, personal attention
Perfect Movie Star Blond Hair is what I got today from Hugh at Mes Ami 193. The best color I've had since my natural blond at age 7 or 8. Perfect sandy blond. My 7 week touchup appointment is already scheduled and I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of a long and happy addiction. I LOVE my hair and that hardly every happens. Nothing compares to Hugh. The hair cut was also amazing and the no nonsense professional attitude is refreshing. Twice the usual price, but 10 times better than the usual job, so it's worth it. I'm so happy I found him.
Pros: SKILL, TALENT
Cons: TINY SPACE, EXPENSIVE
Hugh helped me pick a hairstyle that complimented the shape of my face, hid my large forehead, and accentuated my long neck--he's so awesome! Unlike many stylists Hugh is not chatty--rather he concentrates on his work. Hugh's cut start at $75 and it's so WORTH it!
Pros: Public Transportation, Nice atmosphere, accepts checks
Cons: Expensive , don't accept visa
Hugh is a master with color and highlighs. I have lived in NYC and DC and he is the best. I come to SF just for him. I had my hair colored last week while at a conference and I had at least 10 people tell how great it looked.
Pros: Undivided attention, worth the expense
