This place is exactly what the name says. A classic all American burger with a classic pie for dessert. The food is good but not spectacular. Just a classic diner.

I grew up in Pasadena going to Pie & Burger - but after last week's visit, I can't go back. The place is an absolute dump. Ok, so it's a "greasy spoon" and not a fancy restaurant, I get it, but in order to look past the disgusting

This burger was the greasiest ball of lard I've ever encountered. So greasy that the bun reverted back to a wad of dough and fell off the patty in broken glops. It's as if they made the burger, then dunked it a few times in grease to get it as slimy as possible.

Unsure why the staff was in such a foul mood, unless they're forced to eat this pig slop.

Pros: Staff hates customers and try to get you to leave ASAP

Cons: If you don't leave ASAP, they might serve you the "food"

Whaaaaaaat IS this place? Yes it's old, but why should anyone go here with the literally hundreds of other options that serve better food for better prices. HOLY MOLY $8 for a hot dog? Excuse me? The burgers are TINY, the decor is terrible, they don't take cards, the food is all defrosted. I am angry at the people who dragged me there. It's not even ironic!

These are without a doubt the best burgers in the world! It was definitely worth the trip. The waitresses were friendly, the place was clean, but a little pricey - $6.00 for a burger and parking a little ways away on Lake Avenue. But, that's okay! The food was delicious, especially the cherry pie a la mode!!

Would you pay $7.00 for a burger with small patty? Apparantly the people at Zagat think it's great to serve a $7.00 burger with barely any meat and no fries ($6.50 plus tax). The picture on this page is very decieving. A single McDonald's cheeseburger has more meat than the cheeseburger at Pie and Burger.

Even if you lived nearby, it's worth it to drive a little further to find a burger that actually has meat in it.

Pros: Can't really think of any

Cons: Over priced, small burger

Fairly busy place with what appears to be plenty of regulars. Nothing stood out taste-wise. Burgers were fine, but In-N-Out down the street is a much better value. One fact to make clear here: food is absolutely overpriced. Food taste was very plain. Probably worth it to eat there once to make up your own mind (and recognize how overrated it really is). Low value, particularly if you care about price vs. flavor. Disappointed overall.

The burgers are tasty but not worth the price. The fries are dry and tasteless, and I would refuse them even if they were free. The service is average unless you are a regular. I would rather just go to In -n- Out the burgers are similar and half the price.

This place is a gem that I lost 25 years ago, But on Friday I found an old friend that I hope to see a lot more of in the future.
This is a place to go for a quick bit, to take a few friends for a burger and some laughs, or the whole family for burgers and pies.
The breakfast is pretty good too.
If you go once you?ll keep going back.

It was incredibly overpriced. The old waitress ignored us and talked to one couple about her grandchildren for about 50 minutes. Then she spilled water all over. Then she left the pitcher of water on the counter. My wife pointed out that there was grime (black!) on the inside and then I noticed there were weird bubbles inside. No more water for me. Burger arrived. Disgusting. Meat is grade F. Side salad ($4) was a tiny bit of iceberg, two slices of tomato, a couple croutons, and a pint of thousand island dressing. The fries were obviously fried in oil that should have been changed. This is without a doubt THE MOST DISGUSTING MEAL I'VE HAD IN LOS ANGELES OR PASADENA. STAY AWAY -- IT IS NASTY!!!!

I ate here based on it being the editor?s choice for best hamburger. Not only was the service terrible, but also the hamburger was at best decent. The waitresses were rude and had terrible attitudes. It was as if I was inconveniencing them by being there. I had better service at a bus station food counter in Guatemala City when I was backpacking (and I almost got robbed there). As I sat there, I was thinking to myself?do I really have to leave a tip? I couldn?t tell you how the pie was because I was so turned off that I left after my overpriced burger. Now about the food?the burger is good?for 4 dollars. Not for almost 7. Best of LA? Are the editors of CitySearch smoking? This place couldn?t hold a candle to Paul?s in the East Village (2nd Ave) or BurgerMeister in SF. In-and-out makes a better burger. In fact I would heartily recommend Wolfe Burger, The Hat and The Bucket (all nearby) in a heartbeat . Why this place is popular is beyond me. Just because they use and old cash register and take cash only doesn?t make it good. Don?t believe the hype. This place is awful (i used a differnet word but Citysearch wouldn't allow it)

Pros: I dont know...I never have to go back...thats a good thing

Cons: Where to begin...overpriced, rude service, no parking, knowing that there are better places less than a mile away

Been to this place tonight food was OK, nothing spectacular, there is a lot better not so far from there.
I really don't understand what the fuss is all about !!
Service wasn't great either.

Ok let's just begin by saying the positive aspects of the restaurant. The food is truly very good. From the burgers to the breakfast you will enjoy each bite........that is if you get it for take-out. I cannot begin to express how awful the service is and let me say that I've lived within walking distance for TEN years and have never once received friendly service. This is not a one time bad experience at this place, it is constant. I only eat there when a friend is willing to go pick it up as I always leave there with a bad taste in my mouth. For those reviewers who attributed the attitude to being Asian I can assure you it has nothing to do with race, it simply is all about people who are rude and cold, regardless of anyone's race. Time after time we are met with condesending comments and blank stares. These people are not employable and I can't believe anyone would hire them. The owner himself is a nice man and I just don't know how he's ended up with one total a-hole after the next. Time for a change because this place will not withstand as long as this service continues.

Pros: Great food, anything on the menu

Cons: WORST STAFF AND SERVICE YOU WILL EVER SEE

.

I've have read most of the reviews here and it seems that both the negatives ones and the positive ones are true. Great (greasy) burgers! Just like I like 'em. Fries are your average cafeteria, greasy and dry?McD's are much better. It appears that the owner thinks that his bread n'butter are the local customers, they don't care much about the occasional straggler that walks in to just "try them out". I felt it when I first went in there for the first time, you get that ?WTF are you? look and then after waiting for a very long while (I guess once they figure you ain?t going away until you eat) they decide to talk to you and tell you to sit where ever you want. Yep..waitresses are not friendly at all to the non-locals! All the time we stood there waiting, I saw how friendly the staff was with some of the other customers already eating, the kind of service I would have like to have but didn?t get.
Since my friend worked close by (she really liked their burgers) I sort of became a regular customer and I guess once they saw me there more often, I started to get better service. Once I became a ?regular? I could tell who the newbies were; they were the ones standing by the register with a clueless look on their face and no one to help them. The ones that brave the wait and the uncomfortable feeling of being stared at by other customers and ignored by the staff, are in for one damn good burger.

This is the most discriminating restaurant I have ever been to in Southern California. A warning, if you are Asian, please do not venture into this restaurant unless you are with a white friend or expect be thrashed. I went there once on a Sunday morning, all this talk about over-priced food, no parking space and rude service was true. I am not a person who is usually too picky about the service, but to sit on a bar for 25 minutes waiting to order food while the Caucasian customers from your left and right who came after you had already ordered and gotten their food, that is just over the line. During the meal I was not attended even once by the waitress and had to ask five times for a piece of napkin and was refused any napkin after a white male customer who sat next to me threw his used napkin to my side of the table, when I started complaining and received only a nasty stare from the waitress, the same customer turned to me and told me to behave in a white community. The waitress certainly seem very ill educated and ill mannered.
I left the bill and a dollar tip but really think I shouldn't have. I give this restaurant a one star rating, but I think half of a star is more than enough.

It's an old school restaurant with what appears to be the same furniture it had when it opened (which I think is pretty charming). They serve the classic comfort food but you gotta try the pies - esp. the banana cream pie. It really is that good.

It can get crowded so don't be shocked if you have to wait a few minutes to get a seat.

After reading raving reviews, my husband and I finally made it for lunch. We got seated at the counter and ordered cheeseburgers and fries. It was nice to see your lunch being made right in front of your eyes. Fresh lettuce, freshly grilled hamburgers on a toasted bun with thousand island dressing were assembled and neatly wrapped.

The reason I gave them one star was due to the fact that their service was rude, but only to select customers, us. The couples seated to the right and left of us all ordered the same lunch. The waitress joked around, smiled at them and asked both couples if they would like extra pickle, refills on their drinks or a plate for ketchup. To us, she looked at us as if she was having a bad day and did not want to be bothered. When we asked her for a plate for ketchup, she bent down to get a plate or something and told the couple sitting next to us "I only have two hands" and chuckled. I was a bit shocked to hear the waitress say that. We weren't being rude patrons, we just asked for a ketchup plate since she never once checked with us to see if we needed anything while she was busy checking with the couple seated to the right and left of us. While eating, we noticed the person who appeared to be the owner at the register was quite friendly and was chatting with some folks that appeared to be regulars. I noticed that he would ring people up and made a point to ask customers how their meals were and stuff. What do you know, when it was our turn to pay, not a single smile and a blank look on his face, it was strictly a cash transaction. Did his mother die or something between the last customer and us? Being the only Asian people at the diner at that time I couldn't help but really wonder if the grade of service varied on your race. Overall, I rather go to In-N-Out or pay a little extra and go to Houston's.

I vote for Pie 'n' Burger for Citysearch BOC Best Hamburger EVERY YEAR. Although I enjoy the pie at this joint...it's really all about the burger for me. When the place is slow (which is not very often), you can actually see the cook putting burgers together. You know they're handmade...not frozen and shaped by a machine extruder. I would also recommend trying the peach pie (and peach ice cream) during the summer. You can't more fresh than that.

Great old fashioned diner that evidently has been around since the early 1960s. As first time visitors there, me and my BH (Better Half) decided to try the burger that many reviewers here, and at other sites such as Citysearch, rave about. And also like many reviewers I have to agree that for the price, yes they are quite small. That being said, I have to agree with those who rave about it. While over all it is a small burger, the patty is a good thickness and it was juicy and cooked to perfection. It was topped with fresh crispy iceberg lettuce and dill pickle chip(s). The Thousand Island dressing, touted to be 'homemade' by the restaurant, was in fact perfect and did taste homemade, and combined with the 'juicy patty' made this what every burger should be...a three napkin +, messy delight. So if that 's the type of quality you're looking for in a burger you shouldn't mind the pricey part, JMHO. And what's a great juicy messy burger without fries? So we had an order of fries between us. Again, a bit pricey. But again, served deepfried (hot to the table) to a crispy crunchy golden brown outside and tender inside...good 'medium' thickness cut...and with many long pieces as opposed to short stubby ones. While there we saw many other menu items being served. Mostly sandwiches which comprise most of the menu. Have to say they looked very delicious and good sized/proportioned. Oh, one complaint about our burgers. They didn't have a tomato slice. Don't know if it was omitted or that they just don't serve tomato with their burgers. But we do prefer tomato on burgers of this type. And although we didn't order 'pie', we did see huge slices being served to customers who ordered it. And I mean HUGE slices. So if you like pie you may very well like a helping from Pie n' Burger.

Me and the girlfriend were on our way to In n Out for a late dinner but decided to try this place out after hearing good things.

I had to make an illegal U-turn since there was limited, wait, there IS no parking period. After finding a parking spot about half a block away and jaywalking the street, we finally arrived. We walk in and there is no one to sit us, no one even noticed that we walked in. I remind you that there was probably only 20 people at most in there. We sat ourselves and decided to share a cheese burger and fries to save some money since we were trying the place out. Fries were $3.55 and a chese burger was $6.50. With that money I coulda gotten 4 cheeseburgers and fries at In n Out. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the un-busy waitress finally took our order with an attitude like she just finished giving birth to her 3rd child on welfare. I was thinking that maybe she just had a bad day. But the service wasnt just non-existent, it was bad and rude. We get our food, which was prepared right in front of us and it was honestly very good. The fries were just normal frozen thick cut fries but the burger meat was very tasty and the ingredients were all fresh including the bun. They served us ice water with crushed ice which was refreshing. Halfway into our meal, an octegenarian woman comes out with sunglasses and an apron and starts wiping the counter. We smile at her and she gives is a mean look and smiles about 3 seconds later, like it was forced upon her. We are both Asian Americans at UCLA fully educated in the American schooling system and it just surprises me how much racism still exixts in a place like Pasadena.

Both the old lady and waitress were talking to other Caucasian parties with a huge smile in conversation but everytime they passed us, it seemed like we didn't pay our taxes to pay for their miserable lives.

We left them 15 cents for tip which was too generous in my opinion.

Cons: SERVICE, price, parking

I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. The simple burgers are great. The fresh peach pie is AMAZING! But paying $6.50 for a burger and $4.50 for a slice of pie is hard on the wallet. For a great experience, go there, but it's a bit hard on the wallet for what you get.

Parking is limited, but this greasy-spoon diner is a fun throwback to yesteryear. The waitresses all seem genuine and pleasant, and the food is above average for a diner. Burgers were very tasty, but a little pricey for what you get. If it wasn't for the price, I'd rate this place even higher. $20 for a coke, 2 cheeseburgers and an order of fries is a little much. Overall, definitely worth a try.

Went here for lunch, and this place lives up to its name, both the burger and the pie were yummy. The service was great, and the waitress was really nice, although I did go on a weekday so it wasn't busy. The burger was pretty simple, but really tasty, with good beef and a nice spongy bun, kind of like an In-Out Burger but bigger. I had the peach pie, on the waitress' recommendation, and it was delicious, with a nice crust and amazing fresh sweet peaches. Definitely a place to try if you're in the neighborhood.

I live in Thousand oaks, and when I want a hamburger, i drive to pasadena. Somehow, PB has captured the essence of a burger perfectly. No, it's not a Father's Office type sandwich (amazing bttw), but it's what you always wanted from a hamburger as a kid. Remeber when you had a big day at the beach, and were so hungry that the hamburger you ate tasted just like heaven on a bun? That's what hapens at the counter at PB. The beef is perfectly seasoned, and the bun is crisped to perfection, creating that special al dente feel at the preimiter. The lettuce is crisp, and the optional tomato is a nice add-on. The thousand island is well above average too. I can't say enough about this hamburger, and I grew up at the Apple Pan. The fries are awful, and the sodas are flat, which is a supreme bummer. The pies are inspired. Check it out.

They put together the whole package: meat, cheese, tomato, pickles, onions, lettuce, special sauce, grilled bun... the sum miraculously adding up to more than its parts: Burger Perfection. Fries are good, potato salad: even better. Fresh Peach Pie a la mode is incredible... my favorite slice of pie on the planet. I love it's frozen in time atmosphere of formica tables and counter service. This is just a great place.

Order your cheeseburger with grilled onions and extra thousand. You will need all the extra napkins they automatically give you. A real mess if you're not careful...but worth the extra effort needed to successfully eat the VERY BEST CHEESEBURGER EVER. Don't go alone because you'll need someone to share that heaping side of fries with.

PROS: Food worth both waiting for and paying the price for in my opinion

This place kinda creeped me out. My gf at the time and I went there once, we waited around for a good 5 mins and didnt get a seat. There were plenty of open tables.
It was very odd.
The whole time I was thiking of the black people who didnt get seated at Dennys
My ex gf and I are of the Asian persuasion

Located just off the corner of Lake and California in Pasadena, this burger place feels very nostalgic for the area. With hand coffee grinders and mechanized registers, I doubt anything has been remodeled inside since they first opened. Inside you have the choice of a counter or the very few tables, but expect a wait either way. The draw is the $5.45 burger, with the 25 cent cheese and/or tomato option. The burger patty was hand formed and seasoned to perfection, and the toasted bun was a nice touch. Skip the fries, theyre only so-so. But make sure you get the pie. The boysenberry with cream was fantastic! The custard wasnt great, the lemon meringue was stupendous, and the peanut butter pie was alright. The downside is service is terribly slow and parking was a pain. But all in all a great evening.

I've heard great things about Pie N Burger so I had to try it. My take? The burgers were good, but a bit pricey. $6.00 for your basic hamburger with lettuce and tomato seems a bit ridiculous to me since it doesn't come with any sort of side dish. Additionally, the decor was pretty tacky. Denny's anyone?

I no longer work in Pasadena, but still drop into this great little burger joint whenever I get the chance. I used to love it for lunch. These are "real" burgers, not the fakes at the fast food joints (which I suspect those who don't like the food here were brought up on, and who wouldn't know a "real" burger if it their life depended on it).

It's a very old diner but it's comfortable enough for you to enjoy a juicy burger on a weenend. It's much more tastier than Johnny Rockets, it's a bit pricey though.

I have never understood all the raves this dump gets. On (formerly) trusted friends recomendations I stopped in. WISH I HADN"T! Even though the manager was very friendly, his staff just couldn't be bothered. No small portions (I Wish!) just no taste, McD's food has more taste. They should visit the Apple Pan to see how to do it.

Pie N Burger has good food -- be prepared for an artery clog. However, I was surprised by their prices. For a whole in the wall place (that doesn't have the best atmosphere), their food isn't priced at typical diner prices.

I suppose for Pasadena it's OK, but for the same price, I'd rather go around the corner to Burger Continental.

i've tried this place three times because of those so-called "best of ..." list. HORRIBLE BURGERS (they have no taste, no variety, just plain awful). HORRIBLE PIES (they all taste and look like grocery store pies made with canned fruits). HORRIBLE SERVICE (it feels like you drove to a truck joint in the middle of nowhere). i am a burger lover know them well.

Wow! This is the first time I have ever left a restaurant without leaving a tip. Horrible service, horrible food, and unbelievable prices. I had heard such awesome reviews of this place so I had to try it for myself. Unfortunately, I was 30 minutes too early for lunch, so I had to order breakfast. Burned pancakes, hasbrowns with no flavor, and toast that was covered with way too much butter. I didn't eat much, so I ordered a slice of banana cream pie (I figured if I didn't have a burger, at least I'll have some of their "home made" pie) - another mistake! I can't understand how this place has stayed in business for so long.

While other joints go for the 50's diner appeal look-Pie n Burger is the real thing. From the cash register, soda fountain (yes, they actually mix your soda the old way), to the decor-not much has changed especially the quality. Great Cheeseburgers!

Went here with friends last weekend, after many of them boasting of this place. Ordered burger, frys and pie ala mode. The buger was terrible, barely warmed, but it was tall. The fries were nothing special and the apple pie ala mode, I have had better in Woolworth's when they were still in business. Just goes to show you that ratings can be totally WRONG. Also the waitress service was extremely slow and I felt the food was Way Overpriced for what you received. Other guests also felt the same.

I just don't understand the negative reviews of Pie N Burger. I literally have dreams of their burgers, my whole life I have searched for the perfect burger and I think I have now found it! The perfect balance of crispy char outside and juicy inside. The wait staff is very nice, more than once they have gone way out of their way to give great service.

I'll say it again... The Perfect Burger!

I went to Pie-n-Burger expecting great food and cheap prices. It's one of those places that, from the outside, looks like your favorite burger joint--the place you want to hang out with all of your friends. It doesn't feel like you are in California when you go in there. The food was really good--I recommend the burgers and the pies, in fact. The prices were a little high considering that you could get the same thing somewhere else for cheaper. Maybe you pay for the experience of feeling like you're at your favorite dive. I'm not sure. I'll go there again but next time I'll expect to pay at least $10 for a main entree.

After reading the reviews for this place, I decided to come and try it out. Overall? eh... it's ok. The burgers were good, but I could get the same quality at In&Out for less cash. The fries were 3 bucks for a small plate. Then to top it off, if you order a soda, they make it "from scratch," which means that they put in the ice, put in some syrup, put in some carbonated water, then stir. You would think that this would make it nice and "old-fashioned diner" quality right? Wrong! Our particular server put in ALOT of syrup, ice, and then a "spritz" of carbonated water. Result: Flat coke.

You would think that a place called "Pie n burger" would have a great Chicken Pot pie, right? Wrong. Chicken tough, peas funny colored, and the whole meal was hot as Hades.

So I came back and had a couple of slices of their pies (the strawberry and boysenberry (i think) -- delicious! This moves my rating up one star. They use fresh fruit and pile it into their hot pies! Topped with whipped cream, this stuff rocks!

PROS: great dessert pies!
CONS: not so great in other areas

I haven't been here in awhile, but I used to go here a lot with an elderly relative.
The burgers are really good and they have great shakes. Real old fashioned with counter seating.
On the downside, they can have a long wait on the weekends.
On the upside, they also do catering. I had them cater my son's first birthday party and they did a great job.

PROS: Good food, do catering.
CONS: sometimes has a long wait.

There's a long wait on Sundays, but this is a great place to go for breakfast. If you eat meat, they have these super-thick slices of bacon that they cook to crisp perfection. But, if you're like me, you might just want to stick with the "pecan sticky roll", which is roughly the size of a basketball. Just tell them to leave the butter on the side, because they will otherwise put about a cup of butter on it (roughly one icecream scoop). It's a bit heavy.
