Hello, My name is Mike Mate ... I am one of the grandsons of Jim Mate. Cheryl is my cousin. My dad's name is William (Bill) Mate. My Wife, Julie found this site and let me know about it. We were in S.F. back in 07 and I told her the story of grampa Jim and the pipe shop. I have pictures, post cards of him at the pipe shop and an old tin can of the tobacco that my dad had from the '60's. We went down Geary st. but I didn't know the address at that time. When we got back home, we searched for info on it and found Joe Shapiro's phone # and address in Mill Valley. After some tries, we finally were able to get ahold of him. We had a great conversation about grampa and the pipe shop and the friends, politicians that would come by the shop. As a kid, our family drove to S.F. (in '65) from Michigan and I remember sitting with grampa at his condo and watching him cutting up and creating his blend. Anyways, had a great conversation with Joe. He said he was still making the blend at his house, the same mix that grampa made. His main business was overseas because of the high taxes to ship and sell in the states. I purchased 4 7 oz. packs from him at that time to save for my kids and nephew. They have the same exact label as the old can had. the address for him was P.O. Box 1082, Mill Valley, CA 94942

Jim Mate was my Grandpa, his son Bob was my Dad. My older brother Steve was born in San Francisco and then my parents had to move to Phoenix for my Dads health. My oldest brother Robert is is almost 60 and Steve is 57, I turn 55 in October and our younger brother Randy turned 53 in June. Our Dad passed away in "96" at the age of 72. Our Mom is still going strong.
My son was named Jay Robert after my dad "Robert Jay Mate" and he is the oldest grandchild of my dad, and great grand child of my Grandpa Jim. Any stories you could send me I would greatly appreciate. As my grandpa passed away away when I was pretty young.
I actually have a shirt of his from the shop and it means the world to me. I never got a can of his special blend tobacco, But I had his Love.

Have always wondered if Jim Mate's Pipe Shop is still functioning and at the same location on 575 Geary St. In 1962,I was stationed at Mather AFB, Sacramento and would hitch hike to Frisco especially to purchase my pipe tobacco. What fond memories I had with Jim conversing on different subjects. I would purchase tobacco in a round tin and would replenish that every so often. My e-mail address

I met Jim Mate in July 1958 at his shop on 575 Geary Street, San Francisco California. Is this the same shop? Do you have a website?I haven't been smoking a pipe for a long time and I am interested in making contact. I had an account with your shop when a 7oz container of Aromatic was $15.50. I am sure it has changed. I had a note from Joe that said: Jack, good idea re: computer, but I don't own one, I'm not up-to-date on modem technology, and it seems to get obsolete as fast as new ones come out. Fut for now your up to 1995 prices. this will bring you up to date:2/25/97 - 2/7 Received $18.02 Should be $22.00,2/19/97 2/7 Received $19.00 should be $22.00 Balance due $7.00 Joe.That was for two 7 oz containers, and the price for two was $22.00 back then.I think I sent the $7.00 check, but that was the last I bought. Gee, Over 11 years ago! Where does it go?I hope I have the same Joe and the same Jim Mate Pipe shop that used to be at 575 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA, 94102Please let me know. I like the tobacco...I used to smoke a half and half mixture of Mixture 79 and Heinie's mixture. That was before I met. Jim.Jack Schneider645 Coachway LaneHazelwood, Mo. 63042JSchnei830@AOL.com
