If I could, I would love to give this store location a negative star review. I was in B&N today browsing around the magazine section. Usually I would gather a couple of magazines, find a bench or chair around the store and sit down to quickly look through before purchasing. I noticed this store location has fewer chairs and sitting areas than any other B&N I've been to. So I figured I??d be able to find a niche out of the way and sit for a minute , however all the seating areas were occupied, except for the caf. I don??t usually purchase food at these locations, so I felt it would unfair to occupy a table. Cut the story short, a middle age, salt/peppered shoulder length haired, bitchy, chubby lady wearing a blue shirt today (Tuesday, July 27.2010 @ 3pm ish, El Cerrito Plaza, you know you who are lady) stationed at the center of the store help desk walked around with a security guard telling potential customers that if they are not planning to purchase anything, they shouldn't be sitting on the chairs or the floor.

I've been to many bookstores across the country, especially B&N and never had the experience of a staff member patrolling the store harassing browsers and book reading customers to ??purchase or stop using the facilities? . She confronted one male customer who had apprently been there for a couple of hours looking through some books and told him that, if he's not planning to purchase something, he should leave the chair, and if he's plan on sitting at the starbucks cafe table area, he should buy something there or else vacate the chair for other potential buying customers to sit.

She patroled the store with a security guard and came by the corner where I was sitting and said, "sorry, you can't sit on the carpet. As you can see, the chairs you see over on your right hand side they are filled, and the back of the store sitting area are filled too. You can sit at the cafe area, but you have to buy something, but all tables are taking right now", then she walked away to other areas in the stores saying the same thing to whoever/whatever she saw that didn??t please her sight. But really? To have a security guard folllow you, to conduct your the dirty work??? Really??

Really? I can understand if the store was crazy busy with customers walking around and I am sitting in the middle of someone's way. It seems like B&N intentionally display very minimal seating areas for customer to linger and hang around for no more than 5 minutes. Never in my life, had I experienced such a rude staff patroling the store telling people such nonesense. Apparently she doesn't have anything else better to do except harassing customers to purchase or leave.

Hey Barnes & Noble El Cerrito Plaza Store - you should save your money on paying staff to harass people, then you might have more customers at your stores. Start investing on signage at the entry door letting people know upon entering, they should ??buy or leave?.

I wasn't about to raise a ruckus from her comments since her bodyguard, I mean security guard was standing behind her. I rolled my eyes and shook my head as I left the store SHOCKED at what had happened, intent to not purchase my usual magazine choices. While walking toward the exit door, I noticed just a few other customers in the store doing the same thing I was doing. Apparently the rude staff lady decides who stays and who goes. I felt a bit discriminated, but what can you do, this is not a perfect world we live in and I guess I didn't feel as bad when I saw other reviews online whom experienced the same from this location. As far as I'm concerned, I will not spend another penny at B&N or any other companies with affiliations to them again. I refuse to contribute my hard earned dollars to this sort of employee behavioral policies. I would rather overpay for the exact at another store, than to experience RUDE customer services from B&N, especially the B&N of the El Cerrito Plaza location!!!

I confess, I go to Barnes & Noble so my kid can play on the train table in the children's area. The one at this place is well kept and the trains seem to be a complete set. After my kid is done playing, I have a chance to peruse the books. This location is well maintained, neat, and orderly. I can always find what I'm looking for. I enjoy browsing through the bargain books and they always seem to have plenty here. I come here a couple times a month.

PROS: Well kept and neat

This is a smaller one story Barnes and Noble and offers the mandatory Starbucks in it. They have everything you expect in a book store magazine section , childrens section and more. Since its a smaller branch they dont seem to have many employees around.

There is plenty of parking outside and is in easy reach of plenty of other shops in the Plaza. Nothing better than coffee and a good book.
