Really good authentic mexican food. Lots of items can be made vegetarian or vegan which is a nice plus. Place looks seedy but its not. Servers are always pleasant, food si always delicious and price is totally reasonable. Hole-in-the-wall joints are always the best and this one is no different. If unsure, get the carne asada burrito with sauce and cheese. You will have no doubts after eating that monstrous yummy burrito!!!

Pokez is the Best Mex in SD
by James H.
Pay o attention to the "abuse of the autistic kid". The server in question is no longer there and parental negligence is to blame for that incident.
Food: A+
Environment: A- (a bit dirty floor)
Service: C+ (slow, but timely)
Price: A (reasonable)
Parking: B- (bad on game days/nights)

Tasty... but don't expect them to be nice about it.
by Jeanette B.
Food is good... but the service is horrible. We sat in the restaurant for 30 minutes before we even got our drinks. We waited another 30 for us to get food. What was worse is that when we asked where our server went he came to our table and threw us the receipt and then left. Oops... I think we lost his tip. Our bad.

Great Vegetarian Mexican Food
by Jessie T.
When we lived downtown we frequented this restuarant a couple times a month. The food is always delicious and we loved their vairety of Mexcian food they had on their menu. They have something for everyone.
The price is really good too.

Me.
by Heather S.
I have been eating at Pokez for at least 8 years. I used to drive from Temecula. I f*ing love this place. It's a punk primarily vegan/vegetarian mexican place that consistently makes amazing food for a decent price with a fun and friendly staff. I have brought many MANY people there over the years and everyone has walked away satisfied.

I noticed that despite the last 2 reviews revolving around some alleged assault by the staff at this place, it has received good reviews. So I tried them out.
The place is a block east of the Post office on E st and when we entered the place the first thing I noticed was that the floor was sticky...like it hadn't been mopped in awhile. But still we were already here so we waited to be seated and waited to order. The wait was a bit longer than I'd expect considering that the place was not busy but eventually our server found their way to our table. We ordered and when our server finally brought our orders we were somewhat underwhelmed. I had expected much better Machaca at a sit down establishment but was sadly disappointed as was my companion who's Jony's Breakfast Burrito tasted like it soaked in manteca .
Even discounting the nasty floor, I would say that this place is several cuts below even one of those Red and Yellow greasy taco dives. I have no idea what kind of intoxicants some of the other reviewers were on when they went to Pokez and I question if these reviewers are genuine and if they actually had been to Pokez to eat???

Manager approves of an assault on a disabled child?
by Anonymous
Check out the link below. If the manager of this restaurant really thinks it is OK for his employees to assault and/or refuse to serve disabled people, then he and the employees need to be fired. I wouldn't go to Pokez until the owners explain themselves and take corrective action.

Nobody deserves to be treated that way, disabled or not. They should be ashamed. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Waitress assaults autistic child
by Carol C.
I am a member of an on-line group for parents of children with special needs, and I am writing on behalf of one of our members. One of the waitresses went absolutely ballistic with a young autistic boy because he was taking more time to order than she thought was necessary. She put her hands on him and shook him and screamed into his ear. Then she refused to wait on the entire family. The manager supported her and told the family that they should go elsewhere if they have an autistic child. I am hoping that this story gets around and that people think twice about patronizing Pokez Mexican Restaurant in the future. The waitress should have been fired on the spot, charges of assault should have been brought against her, and management should have done everything within its power to have made it right with the family. No apology was forth-coming.

Great food, great Ambience
by Shawn R.
I was taken to this little place the other night going, oh man.. were am I being dragged to now. Well... driving by to find parking the place caught my eye. Its different, artsy and yes a bit on the edgy side with its art and decor. Full on visual bombardment. WIll definatley keep your eyes open and looking for more.
The food. now... with the pricing and the portions... its just plain amazing. All organic and from what the menu says... most of it is made there.
I highly recommend this place, great location, great food and extremely reasonable prices!
PROS: Great vide, great ambient, great employees

I enjoyed my meal at Pokez (pronounced "pokeys" - they are very vegetarian and vegan friendly, and their items on the menu are marked as such.
They are located in a somewhat edgy part of downtown - you'll see panhandlers and homeless folk lying about. The restaurant itself fits right into the area with its bizarre decor (i.e. there is a statue of a man in bra and panties with plants hanging off of him).
There is a combo #13 titled, "You don't want it!". I dare someone to try...
PROS: Great food, large portions, they have Sprite AND 7UP
CONS: Could be scary at night, but not too bad

Seriously delicious food, huge portions, and great selection for vegetarians and carnivores alike. When asked what three foods I could never live without, the Potato, Tofu, Mushroom Burrito topped the list. Don't be intimidated by the stickers, just go in and enjoy!
PROS: Delicious and cheap. Layed back, interesting atmosphere.
CONS: Parking on game nights can be tricky (close to Petco Park).
