The food is great, especially for vegetarians and I have been coming here for 6+ years. Look past the brash initial impression, this place is great even though it takes forever. Not fast food, good food.

On the other hand, if you forget your wallet at the table, within less than 20 hours their company policy is to drop it in the downtown mailbox. No envelope, just dopped.

So yes I am the idiot that forgot my wallet, but is that really how you treat a regular customer who has been coming in for years? I mean at least hold on to it for a day or two.

Thank you for the terrible inconvenience.

Pokez is the nickname of Alfonso Reyes and his brother Rafael whom along with his father started this family run eatery back in 1994. It's a funky cool Mexican place. I do not know if the atmosphere and attitude make the food taste better or the food makes the atmosphere better, but whatever it is this is my favorite taco shop in town.

Here is why. It's the first place I've seen that breaks down stereotypes, by using the same medium and modern style that every other hip downtown eatery uses for its decor. Urban hip-hop and post low-rider pop. Home grown food (being green and supporting local suppliers), local artisans on the wall (donated and not for sale.), low key San Diego attitude, and a collegiate esprit d'corp. Its got freshman named smith waiting tables (multicultural), and Quetzalcoatl on a skateboard as a logo. Come on, I dare you to find another Mexican restaurant in town that can laugh at itself and be itself so well.

The food is good, really good. The vibe is great, in a kid to granddad way. It's got tasty and filling vegetarian and vegan plates. The Jukebox plays the DK's. On weekends it is open to 3am. Enough said, Pokez gets my 5 stars.

Really good authentic mexican food. Lots of items can be made vegetarian or vegan which is a nice plus. Place looks seedy but its not. Servers are always pleasant, food si always delicious and price is totally reasonable. Hole-in-the-wall joints are always the best and this one is no different. If unsure, get the carne asada burrito with sauce and cheese. You will have no doubts after eating that monstrous yummy burrito!!!

Pay o attention to the "abuse of the autistic kid". The server in question is no longer there and parental negligence is to blame for that incident.

Food: A+
Environment: A- (a bit dirty floor)
Service: C+ (slow, but timely)
Price: A (reasonable)
Parking: B- (bad on game days/nights)

Food is good... but the service is horrible. We sat in the restaurant for 30 minutes before we even got our drinks. We waited another 30 for us to get food. What was worse is that when we asked where our server went he came to our table and threw us the receipt and then left. Oops... I think we lost his tip. Our bad.

I have been eating at Pokez for at least 8 years. I used to drive from Temecula. I f*ing love this place. It's a punk primarily vegan/vegetarian mexican place that consistently makes amazing food for a decent price with a fun and friendly staff. I have brought many MANY people there over the years and everyone has walked away satisfied.

I noticed that despite the last 2 reviews revolving around some alleged assault by the staff at this place, it has received good reviews. So I tried them out.

The place is a block east of the Post office on E st and when we entered the place the first thing I noticed was that the floor was sticky...like it hadn't been mopped in awhile. But still we were already here so we waited to be seated and waited to order. The wait was a bit longer than I'd expect considering that the place was not busy but eventually our server found their way to our table. We ordered and when our server finally brought our orders we were somewhat underwhelmed. I had expected much better Machaca at a sit down establishment but was sadly disappointed as was my companion who's Jony's Breakfast Burrito tasted like it soaked in manteca .

Even discounting the nasty floor, I would say that this place is several cuts below even one of those Red and Yellow greasy taco dives. I have no idea what kind of intoxicants some of the other reviewers were on when they went to Pokez and I question if these reviewers are genuine and if they actually had been to Pokez to eat???

Check out the link below. If the manager of this restaurant really thinks it is OK for his employees to assault and/or refuse to serve disabled people, then he and the employees need to be fired. I wouldn't go to Pokez until the owners explain themselves and take corrective action.

Nobody deserves to be treated that way, disabled or not. They should be ashamed. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************

I am a member of an on-line group for parents of children with special needs, and I am writing on behalf of one of our members. One of the waitresses went absolutely ballistic with a young autistic boy because he was taking more time to order than she thought was necessary. She put her hands on him and shook him and screamed into his ear. Then she refused to wait on the entire family. The manager supported her and told the family that they should go elsewhere if they have an autistic child. I am hoping that this story gets around and that people think twice about patronizing Pokez Mexican Restaurant in the future. The waitress should have been fired on the spot, charges of assault should have been brought against her, and management should have done everything within its power to have made it right with the family. No apology was forth-coming.

I was taken to this little place the other night going, oh man.. were am I being dragged to now. Well... driving by to find parking the place caught my eye. Its different, artsy and yes a bit on the edgy side with its art and decor. Full on visual bombardment. WIll definatley keep your eyes open and looking for more.

The food. now... with the pricing and the portions... its just plain amazing. All organic and from what the menu says... most of it is made there.

I highly recommend this place, great location, great food and extremely reasonable prices!

PROS: Great vide, great ambient, great employees
CONS:

I enjoyed my meal at Pokez (pronounced "pokeys" - they are very vegetarian and vegan friendly, and their items on the menu are marked as such.

They are located in a somewhat edgy part of downtown - you'll see panhandlers and homeless folk lying about. The restaurant itself fits right into the area with its bizarre decor (i.e. there is a statue of a man in bra and panties with plants hanging off of him).

There is a combo #13 titled, "You don't want it!". I dare someone to try...

PROS: Great food, large portions, they have Sprite AND 7UP
CONS: Could be scary at night, but not too bad

Seriously delicious food, huge portions, and great selection for vegetarians and carnivores alike. When asked what three foods I could never live without, the Potato, Tofu, Mushroom Burrito topped the list. Don't be intimidated by the stickers, just go in and enjoy!

PROS: Delicious and cheap. Layed back, interesting atmosphere.
CONS: Parking on game nights can be tricky (close to Petco Park).

Yes, very scenestery, and what place in San Diego is not? the mysterious, sullen attitude is just a facade, obviously. The mahi mahi tacos were great and I'm still down with the amazing sangria.

My friends and I went today for lunch. We were a group of 6, and a very rude waitress told us that we should sit in separated tables of 4 chairs each. We asked her if we could all squeeze in a booth. She said NO, at this point she was really giving us commands. Then we saw the tables, and they were next to each other. We figured that we could put the tables together and actually sit together and eat together as a group. We were not bothering anyone, and made sure that we were not blocking other tables, wich we were not. The waitress came and with a very angry yell told us "you do not understand, if you are not going to sit as I told you, you better leave." We told another waiter that the attitude was kind of rude, but he just said "sorry" but did not do anything. It was not crowded, and it is usually the case that for larger groups they accomodate small tables into a big sitting space, but well, not here, at least not for us. We walked out, since the only place that I think you get food with such a rude attitude is in jail or in the military (and you do not pay for it by the way). I figured we still had to pay and tip this horrible person.

We did not try the food, but comon, there are hundreds of Mexican restaurants in San Diego, who needs Mexican Dark wannabe? nasty cool? No thanks, I already solved my issues and I only wanted to enjoy a nice lunch with nice company.

We ended up a few blocks later in Los Alambres, a wonderful place with really good variety of tacos (from Mexico City street tacos, to baja gourmet fish and shrim tacos). Reasonable prices, sunny and clean place, and with a nice service. ?who needs rudeness when you are out for lunch with friends?

My boyfriend and I ate here last weekend, both vegetarians we heard a lot about it and wanted to try. It was cheap, the salsa was amazing, and the tacos were okay... not a direct comparison, but between the two I favor Taco Loco in Laguna Beach (which is also famous for it's poor service and rude employees). It wasn't too busy, but we waited a long time to get everything... drinks, the food, our check... the guy serving us would walk by but avoid eye contact. Kind of strange. We finally walked up to the front and paid. I would eat there again but only for the salsa and if I had an hour and half to spare to eat one taco.

"Mexican" and "vegan" are rarely uttered in the same breath, but Pokez has its recipe right, with delicious seasoned tofu that would have any burrito-buff fooled. The unusual Mexican menu is infused with generous traditional meat dishes as well as insanely tasty vegetarian, more healthful alternatives. The crowd is a cross section of the young counter-culture crowd, which is good, because they tend to forgive the service more than older folks. Sassy servers can be anywhere from cool to rude, depending on whether you know the house rules and don't bother them too much. If you can't wait for your whopping quesadilla or enchilada, feast on the free chips and big bowl of homemade spicy salsa fresca, or just order to-go. Whether you're a starving artist or just pretending to be one, you're going to love the food and your bill. With vandals' graffiti on the outside and religious relics laced with pop-culture on the inside, the vegetarian eatery isn't half as tie-dyed as the clientele's hair color.
