.

I am here at least once a week with my boyfriend. We are always greeted by a big smile from Frank the owner, who couldn't be nicer! I cannot stay away from the shrimp tacos and margaritas!!! The chips and salsa are soooo fresh..I look forward to one day trying each item on the menu.

I recently threw a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend there because he loves it so much . We had about 20 people at the dinner and everything went perfectly! Everyone loved the food and drinks and for almost all of them it was their first there. It felt good introducing my friends to this little hidden treasure.

Now am hungry just from thinking about Pueblo Viejo!!!

Had lunch on 10-1-2010. It was about noon and the place was nearly empty. Immediately on being seated, I was offered chips and dip. The eagerness of the (male) waiter caused me to ask whether chips were included "with the table", and he responded no, they cost only $3, which stuck me as a little high, considering that the least expensive lunch available, (such as a burrito with beans and zucchini) costs $9.95. I passed on the chips and salsa.

In my book, this would be a pricey burrito lunch, with a $3 order of chips. So I question those who think the prices at Pueblo Viejo are good. To me their prices appear almost as much as Frida in Beverly Hills - a poor value considering their location on a rather seedy part of Melrose with street parking only. I ordered a burrito of chile verde, which is pork in a spicy tomatillo sauce. Although the menu stated an all meat burrito (without rice or beans in it) a second waitress (who turned out to be the owner) stated that the burrito contained chile verde, with beans inside it.

The burrito arrived, mostly beans with about 3 small pieces of meat in it. The meat was broken up and well mixed in with the beans so the effect and taste of the chile verde sauce were diminished. But additional green sauce was ladled onto the plate forming a bed under the burrito. So I had a good opportunity to check out the green tomatillo sauce they had prepared - and astonishingly, it was about 40% fat! The oil had separated into large "slicks" on the plate, and it was unmistakable that a very large and unnecessary amount of fat was contained in this sauce. What a cook!

The sauteed zucchini was served in a small cup, and was also completely saturated with fat, which formed a deep bath at the bottom of the cup. This cook clearly has no idea of how to cook vegetables or sauces in a flavorful way without using incredibly high amounts of fat in their preparation.

I will also mention that the female owner who took my order also suggested the "chips and salsa as her first recommendation. And when I suggested to her that as a single person I only needed a few chips - so the $3 price was too high, the woman heartlessly defended her price, saying that the tortillas were very expensive - and when I responded that she could buy a fresh package of 2.5 dozen tortillas at the 99? store, she countered that the cost of cooking oil was also going up.

I was chuckling at the poor judgement of this merchant - and combined with the super fatty food I was served, I've decided never to return to this overpriced, overrated and over oily establishment. Perhaps Pueblo Viejo is a good place for a cheap margarita and chips at happy hour, but as a serious Mexican restaurant, I give it very low mark.

My Friend and I went to Happy Hour at Pueblo Viejo last week, it was Taco Tuesday so we received free tacos! As well as they have 3$ beers. The food was good, and the service was great.

Me and my lady were waiting to eat dinner at Larchmont Grille and decided to check out the surrounding businesses, when we came across a slightly ajar door that looked like the entrance to a biker bar... After much convincing I finally got her to come inside just to have a drink and see what was lurking behind this mysterious entrance.

Little did we know we were invited by a very cozy casa-like restaurant with a small bar and happy employees. We grabbed a couple margaritas and were quite comfortable. We didn't get a chance to eat but reviewed their menu and munched on some amazing chips and salsa with a kick.

This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it is definitely worth checking out! Very Inexpensive, with an extensive home style menu cooked from the heart with great service!

I recently visited Pueblo Viejo after reading a few reviews here on CitySearch and found it to be just "okay." Not to say it was bad, but I've had better. The price is right here and you do get what you pay for but there are much better options in Los Angeles. The staff was very friendly and the margaritas were good. The waitress suggested the enchilada/shrimp taco combo which wasn't bad, but the rojo enchilada sauce tasted like the kind you buy from the store and I didn't particularly enjoy the pinto beans that accompanies the combo dishes.

After a meeting at Paramount Studios = cocktail, wind down. This is the place. It is family run and serves family recipes with friendly service.
Emelda and Francisco (Frank) have a comfortable restaurante and bar that is equally suited for couples, singles, groups dining together or families with children.
The bar area has a plasma TV for sports viewing and is separate from the dining area so each space has its own purpose. There are top shelf tequila selections available, in addition to a full bar. Delicate lighting, wonderful ambience set the stage for delicious food at reasonable prices. There is a happy hour M-F 4:00pm to 7:00pm, delivery, catering, call 323-464-0624.
Starters -jicama and carrot sticks with ranch dressing, very refreshing. The homemade salsa, avocado dips with chips are fresh, the fragrance is undeniable. There is a chipotle bbq sauce that is smokey and thick. There is a totopitos dish, chips with melted jack cheese and pinto beans on the side with avocado ? better than any ?nachos? you?ve ever tried. Crunchy, having the beans on the side means it doesn?t get soggy by the time you finish.
The quesadilla de Cameron, two corn tortillas with shrimp and cheese, topped with ranchero sauce and pico de gallo is exceptional. The shrimp is fresh and firm and matches the sauce.
There are soups & salads: Sopa de Papa - potatoes simmered with tomatoes, onions & green chiles.
Sopa de Tortilla ? spicy chile broth with tortillas, Mexican cheese and avocado.
Green salad, Grilled chicken salad, Caesar salad, w/ chicken
Entrees: Tacos, Burritos, and a large number of specialty plates, enchiladas, flautas, chile relleno, carne asada, carnitas, chile verde, and a number of chicken dishes prepared in different ways.
Also, seafood selections, halibut, & shrimp. Combination platters are also available.
Recently added breakfast, starting at 9:00am ? Sunday to Friday featuring Omlettes, fruit & granola, eggs, bacon, and sausage, etc.

I love, love, love this restuarant. The food is fantastic, the staff is so attentive, the owner is extremely appreciative of your business and margheritas are the BEST! The vege burrito is extremley tasty, not greasy and full of only beans. The prices are extremely reasonable and the atmosphere is warm and fun. Everything is homemade and FRESH and you can taste it.

It's a hidden treasure. You'll love it. Say hi to Franciso (Frank) the owner, he's a doll.

MMM YUMMY! I had always loved Campos, But never liked to travel to Santa Monica to get it. This place is conviniently located to where I live and it is so good. I always get the Carne Asada plate- well done with Flour tortillas.

cant say anymore- besides your missing out.

Though everybodys entiltled to their own opinion, most of this people who have left theirs just arent really smart enough, {the bad ones}. Just like the title says, best everything. Though it took a few more minutes for food, I know its fresh and not microwavable! Honestly this guys most work for another mexican resturant and are ignorant, cause if you were to ask anybody there 9 out of 10 will say its the best mexican resturant ever!! Best thing is for new people to go check it out! For me I'm never influenced by other peoples opinions unless positive!!

Pueblo Viejo is hands down my favorite Mexican place in town. The food is real traditional Mexican, not the Americanized variety you get at other places and the staff is knowledgable and friendly. I've seen other Citysearch members complain about the fact that they don't bring chips and salsa to you when you sit down (they DO dring fresh vegetables) but they serve it and the salsa is great, spend the $2 and stop complaining. Go to Baja Fresh if you want free chips. Other users hace complained about the lack of mariachi music and I think that's a laughable complaint. Would you like the staff to wear sombreros and talk about Speedy Gonzalez? Bottom line is, if you want real Mexican food and good service in a quiet environment this is your place. If you want a caricature of Mexico and faux Mexican cuisine you have plenty of other options.

I have been frequenting Pueblo Viejo (formerly Zumayas) for nearly 20 years and the food is absolutely the best Mexican cuisine in Los Angeles and always has been so. It is not clear to me either how there was the one moderate review. Javier the Maitre D is family to me and most all the patrons. The hospitality and ambiance are fun, homey and welcoming... Why Lucy's is still in business beat the heck out of me when Pueblo Viejo is a block away and a whole universe better both in terms of food, hospitality, price and charm... Don't Miss This Place!

while everyone's entitled to their opinion, i can't possibly comprehend the "below average" rating (one of six reviews) someone gave this place. my friend & i decided to check it out after driving by for years (it used to be Zumaya's). now, of course, we're kicking ourselves for not going sooner. we were literally blown away & my friend is a private chef. not only was the food the most spectacular, authentic Mexican either of us ever had in L.A. (including the homemade chips - YUM), but the service was top-notch, with a personal touch. prices for both food & alcohol were below the L.A. average & the atmosphere is funky & colorful. i emailed all my friends to tell them about it as soon as i got home. pure satisfaction.

i don't know where these other people went but I went to pueblo viejo after hearing about it on a radio show. I ordered a nice top shelf margarita - definately no complaints in the drink department but instead of chips and salsa they bring you carrots sticks and jicama- minus two points. (it would really only be one point because it IS original, but it's not very tasty) The carne asada came barely seasoned, in an uncut flank. the sauce was ok but no where near worthy of any praise that a can of sauce for the supermarket wouldn't warrant. My dates food wasn't sub-par but it's not anything that carries the flavor of select ingredients or that will stick with you for a while. All in all the exchange rate of food for money isn't equal here. It's a very nice atmosphere but the menu needs a overhaul unless you want to grab a drink with a friend then you're headed to the right place.
Also someone on here said that the tortilla soup was the best the ever had??? That statement almost makes me doubt the intellgence of most of the reviewers here.... the soup was definetly the low point of the meal.

Pros: DRINKS!!! Service, Atmosphere, quaint and romantic at a certain level

Cons: food is not very inventive, authentically tasteful, or good

.

I love this place. Discovered with my friends one night as it's the closest thing you can find to an attitude-free cocktail in booze-free, adjacent Larchmont w/out stepping into the nasty Larchmont Bar across the street.

Javier is a sweetheart, the food is good, the margaritas are banging. Nothing like it in that area of town (Larchmont/Larchmont Adj.).

Good place to bring a large group, esp. if their karaoke is going on.

Very warm, friendly service from Javier, the waiter who seems to be there at all times. They bring out veggies for you to munch on while you decide what to order. The food is authentic and delicious, and they sure know tequila. I wouldn't recommend this place for a romantic evening, but it's great for lunch or dinner with friends.

What a great place. The food is fantastic and filling without making you feel lethargic. Their mole sauce is spicey with just a hint of chocolate--not that sweet at all--and their chipotle sauce is divine. They also have a GREAT tequila selection for really, really nice prices. It's a nice way to sample a variety of premium tequilas without spending a ton of money; hopefully they will have some tasting parties to show people how to best enjoy high quality tequila. The service is terrific, the decor is charming--it's great for both dates and groups--you're gonna wanna be a regular here.

Formerly Zumaya's, I had high expectations going back in and was more than pleased.
Aesthetically the restaurant is about 200% more pleasing! The interior looks amazing. We went at night and found the colors, red, oranges, greens so vibrant and welcoming.
The food was so delicious. The sopa de tortilla was probably the best I've had in southern Cal and the grilled chicken tacos with pasilla chile and a bit of chipotle sauce, so smoky and savory, was sooooo good. I will be returning at least once a month just for that sauce. Wow. The service was impeccable. Agree with other review about Javier. Very cool guy. I didn't drink margaritas, but the bar was fully stocked and the beer was nice and chilled. I recommend this to anyone looking for great Mexican cuisine at a great price, with a sense of authenticity.

Went to Zumaya's last night for the first time with my sister. I was so impressed with the food and service. The atmosphere is so laid back and comfortable it almost feels like you're having a dinner at home. The wait staff is unbelievably friendly, attentive and (this is the best part) let us sit for over 2 hours just enjoying our meal and delicious pitcher of margaritas. A completely enjoyable experience. I'll be back and back and back and.......

Zumaya's is a cool refuge from the hostile Hollywood (summer) heat, offering almost a cave-like atmosphere accented with Mexican folk art to the likes of Diego Rivera. Chips, ranch and jicama
greet the hungry customer upon arrival. Friendly service, comfy booths, and no lines for seating make this the perfect lunch spot for nearby KCAL, Paramount, and other studio employees. Truly tranquil lunching w/o any need to rush, and with $7-$10 tasty lunch combos that can serve a family, you'll never leave unsatisfied.
