I am new to the area and couldn't wait to try out the cute bakery on the corner in Altadena. Unfortunately, the cookies I bought were stale. I tried two different kinds, Chocolate Chip Walnut and Oatmeal Walnut. Both were so stale that I ended up throwing them out. At $.75 each for small cookies I certainly expected better. I won't go back.

I think that its funny that people have a hard time talking about things mostly the people that are saying that Mike is a puppet well im glad that YOU feel that you cannot come in anymore you sound like a jerk yourself. As for me i think that Patti cakes is awesome and that the owners are great people and i hope that anyone who reads that FOX is on in the mornings knows that it is not actually the channels that are on in the morning go like this channel 7 from opening till about 10am when the View comes on, and then it will change to HLN an affiliate of cnn. Wow not really fox but i guess to someone closed minded and not paying attenetion you might be able to get that confused. As for the fact of the teacher Mike's son is a teacher and so really what could he have said bad about teachers in the country. Yet again unless you know the facts i suggest that you dont attack a person. You can find me at Patti cakes at least twice a week i will keep supporting this great buisness i do support the local small buisness owners and im happy to see new customers come into the buisness i hope that a couple of bad situations that have been seen dont persuade people from coming in.

I have been a customer for a few years and have been an early morning customer quite often. I have been g there with my children and wife many times. Mike is opinionated, but won't render an opinion or state his views until you start talking to him first. He knows better than that. The man can be a little rough around the edges, but if you start a controversial discussion with him and don't like his views, well shame on you.

I like and respect Mike and Phyllis. They always treat me and my children respectfully and the pastries and cakes are awesome.

I've been a fan of Patticakes for the 10 years I've lived in Altadena. They've been hit hard by the recession---their wholesale dessert business is off alot and their store traffic is down substantially. I try & support them, despite not liking their coffee (very weak & can't make a good latte), vs doing the Sbux routine as their desserts & pastries are very, very good.

However after this morning I simply won't buy from them anymore. Before I get into why, a bit of background first: the shop has always had a small group of retired locals who come in & have their morning coffee & shoot the s+*&. Fox News is ever-present background (TV always on in the AM) and the banter is usually about politics, but also about sports & entertainment. I've noticed that the gathering group has dwindled from about 8-10 or so a couple of years ago, to just 2-3 now, and I think I finally figured out why. Over the past two years the owner, Mike, has become a very vocal, and militant, right winger & hasn't hesitated to share his personal political views with everyone & anyone within earshot. That hasn't been a problem for me until this AM. I walked into the shop at 7:15 to find the shop owner basically yelling at a female customer I've never seen before. He was literally ranting about welfare, education & deficits---a 3 minute non-stop tirade. There were two other customers in the shop---both part of the (now diminished) AM geezer group. They were sitting there passively, watching him berate this customer. His wife, who works at the shop daily, was saying nothing---keeping busy polishing the stainless steel counters. The female customer, who seemed to be simply wanting to pay for her coffee & leave, finally gave up & walked out, which only further enraged the owner, who then launched into an even louder tirade against liberals & teachers (apparently they had been having a "discussion" about education as she was a teacher), yelling at her as she got into her car & drove away. He continued his tirade about leftists after she was gone---just angry & rambling.

So I'm standing there, pouring myself a coffee, noticing how weak it was, dreading the fact that I'm actually going to have to drink it, and decided enough. I turned around, put my 1/2 made coffee on the counter, and said to the shop owner "Mike, you just lost another customer. And I'm not talking about the lady you just ran off. Maybe one day you'll learn that pissing on 60% of your potential customer base isn't a way to run a business." And I walked out.

While I'll miss their pastries, there are enough other great bakeries within our area that I don't NEED to frequent his shop. And while I would rather support the independent over the corporate chains, at least with the corporate chains I don't need to hold my tongue & tone out the incessant Hannity/Rush/Savage recitations that are the background "music". This is a free country, and Mike is free to run his business as he sees fit, but I refuse to support a shop where the owner verbally abuses customers based on their political beliefs. I go to the bakery for a coffee & pastry, not to be indoctrinated/yelled at by a Fox parrot.

I ordered a special cake from PC and spoke to Mike. He was so unprofessional, a jerk to call it and spoke to the new owner who apologized. Get him out!

The cakes are very tasty. If you bother throwing a party for someone don't get a supermarket cake. I have no problems with the cakes, my family has bought about 5-7 a year from them. At some point though it is only a cake and the rude service( I believe Mike) is going to send me someplace else. Since when did a baker sit on such a high horse. Not much you can do though when your kids birthday party is the next day. Just stuck it up and go somewhere else next time. There are some other good bakeries in Pasadena.

I had been going to Patticakes for a while loving the coffee and croissants. However, I had a very bad encounter with the manager Mike. They allow patrons to come in the morning before they open and get their goodies and leave. One morning, I did that and there was no coffee left. I told him about it and he said I was lucky to be there before they open , called me rude and told me to find another coffee shop and not to return because I didn't say please or thank you. I will never go back there because of this negative and unprofessional encounter. He had this confrontation in front of waiting patrons and I was MORTIFIED! My family and friends will never go there because of the manager. Get a new one!

I phoned in and the owner Mike answered the telephone. I found him short and kinda rude. When I wanted to place and order for my sons first birthday cake - he told my I had to have the order in by 10am. I phoned in at 10:10am. I asked him if he was serious that they couldn't take this special order 10min late and he told me that I should stop being such a Smart Alec! We'll needless to say I will never buy anything from this store! If you want to be rude you have to pay the consequences!!

PROS: NONE
CONS: Rude!

Patti, the founder, sold to another family a few years back. I'm happy to say, the new owners have kept the product right at the same level that made this place famous.

This is the place to go for gorgeously decorated cakes. Some of the flower & fruit displays are better than florists I've used. Fillings and flavor are the best I've had.

While I might go to Takes the Cake for a fun kids or special occasion cake, if I want sophisticated, this is the place.

Oh, and they have a nice display of tarts, croissants, muffins and other goodies with coffee & espresso drinks with seating to enjoy a taste onsite or get coffee on Saturday morning.

PROS: Beautiful, stylish & delicious cakes, cookies & tarts, espresso bar
CONS:

Called the bakery and ordered the 3-berry cake upon recommendation from a friend. They were able to accomodate my request despite the short notice. The cake become the talk of the party. It is what I look for in a cake, great combination of flavor and texture. It looked great as a whole and even more appetizing after you cut the cake to show the layers and the berries. It's a little bit on the pricy side, but worth every $$$ :)

Patticakes is my favorite destination for picking up birthday cakes! There isn't anything that I have had that is not simply delicious. My favorite is the Chocolate Flourless Cake. If you love rich chocolate you will love this cake.

Additionally, they have great pastries and cookies if you want to get a quick pastry fix with your morning coffee.

If you're looking for a good bakery in Pasadena don't head to Old Town, head north instead. Patticakes is no longer owned by Patty herself, but the service and food are still good. You must try the Old Fashion chocolate cake, all the tarts are great especially the Tart Tartan, and oh the Raisin Croissant is yummy too. The people are so friendly, it's slightly pricey but the portions are good. This is one hole in the wall I'm glad to share with the rest of L.A.
