Pioneer French Baking Co

Pioneer will rise again
The founding family of Pioneer Bakery are building a new retail bakery on the site of their former bakery. They hope to open by their 100 year anniversary (2008) but it will likely open early 2009. They are also planning to open a Basque restaurant and other retail shops (wine, cheese?). Soon Venice will again have the unmatched aroma or sourdough bread, french bread and pastries wafting down Rose Ave!

What happened to Pioneer?
by John F.
This is the same Pioneer whose bread you could buy in the stores, isn't it? I haven't seen their bread in stores for quite a long time, maybe years. All I can find now is San Francisco Baking Co. bread, or some such in red and green packaging. Does anyone know where their breads can be purchased nowadays? They had the best sourdough sliced bread and rolls (that you could buy in supermarkets). The regular French bread was great too. Please don't tell me they went out of business!
I used to work at a machine shop in an industrial part of El Segundo around 1997. I realized that the Pioneer bakery was accross the street when I noticed Pioneer delivery trucks going to and fro. I was surprised that the bakery that produced the bread I'd always eaten as a kid was so small and in such a nondescript building. A couple of the reviews here seem to suggest that there is/was a cafe attached. Does anyone have any info?

I have no idea how good this bakery was, found out about it on this site and went to check it out. The windows are boarded up now. Bummed because I know of no other bakery in Venice.

The greatest place for fresh bread, the bakery is right in back of the shop. You can stop here and get a couple of big crunchy loaves of french bread to use to make guy-sized submarine sandwiches for the next football game or poker night at your place if you want to do the little lady a favor!
PROS: FRESH hot bread and rolls
CONS: none...terrific!

The Pioneer Bakery has operated here on Rose Ave. a few blocks up from the beach, for as long as I can remember. Take a detour from the bike path and drop by the bakery's "secret" store where the smell of warm sourdough loaves is enough to make you swoon. We always bike home with a crispy, fragrant baguette lashed to the handlebars..well, most of a baguette anyway ;0)
PROS: Bread so fresh you often have to pick it up in double bags to avoid getting
CONS: none..what could be bad about hot sourdough bread right from the oven?

Generally speaking the bread at Pioneer Bakery is baked with some love, but the hot croissants are addicting!!! They normally have them at 11:30 a.m. at most mornings but you can also call them ahead of time to find out exactly when it's ready. When you buy the croissants always have them bag it in a paper bag instead of their usual plastic bag. Paper bag keeps the croissant fresh and crunchy!
