My father did some metal work for the Oxnard bakery/factory back in the 90's and would bring home the most tastey triangle shaped pastries. I have been craving them so bad and want to know what they were. I think they were made with that same style dough (lamanated dough) as a croissant but had sugar/ sugar glazed in the layers. I would "peel" and eat each layer individually. The closest recipe I have come across appears to be the Kouing (Kouign) Aman (Amann). Is that what it was just not shaped?

I have none my friend Linda for 46 years. She is now 54 years old. Her mother Faye lived in Venice when she was young and pregnant with Linda. Before Faye died, she told her that her father was not really her father and that her real father and his family owned a french bakery in Venice, California. Linda was born in 1956. We are trying to locate her real father. We think possibly it could be the owners of Pioneer Bread family, because there were the only bakery around at that time in Venice, CA. We saw pictures of the son, which would be a half brother and he could be Linda's twin. If any one knows them or how we can get in touch with them, please let us know, because Linda would really like to meet here real father and siblings.

ok.......last post..........rent the movie "Mother Jugs & Speed" with Bill Cosby, Larry Hagman & Raquel Welch......they filmed it on the corner of 5th & Rose in the 1970s.........they "bought out" the barber & Leon's Market for a month while they filmed on the corner......they asked my dad to keep his neon light on for nite filming (Jack's Tailoring & Cleaners).....it's a good retro of what it used to look like :-)

btw.........try Ralph's Market for sourdough :-) We moved there when I was 1 1/2 yrs old.......I'm now 62 .......yikes....so I lived there all my life........moved out when I was 18 (Hollywood) but visited my parents every Saturday .........went bike riding down to Venice Beach and went across the street to get 2 sourdough breads for the week.........far out what they are doing with the property.........my folks sold the property at 507 and retired to Palm Springs in 1980 but I do cruise Rose Ave every chance I get............hey........you can go home :-)

I grew up across the street from the Pioneer Bakery at 5th & Rose......my parents owned the cleaners across the street at 507 Rose........I used to play with the Garacheche's daughter...they lived upstairs from the bakery in a large apartment.........the smell of sourdough bread baking on a hot summer nite had everyone hanging out of their windows waiting for the bread to come out of the oven....what a good childhood memory......some markets carry the bread but when I squeeze it is it not "fresh" like I used to remember it...but it's better than nothing :-) ..........need my "fix" :-)

The founding family of Pioneer Bakery are building a new retail bakery on the site of their former bakery. They hope to open by their 100 year anniversary (2008) but it will likely open early 2009. They are also planning to open a Basque restaurant and other retail shops (wine, cheese?). Soon Venice will again have the unmatched aroma or sourdough bread, french bread and pastries wafting down Rose Ave!

This is the same Pioneer whose bread you could buy in the stores, isn't it? I haven't seen their bread in stores for quite a long time, maybe years. All I can find now is San Francisco Baking Co. bread, or some such in red and green packaging. Does anyone know where their breads can be purchased nowadays? They had the best sourdough sliced bread and rolls (that you could buy in supermarkets). The regular French bread was great too. Please don't tell me they went out of business!

I used to work at a machine shop in an industrial part of El Segundo around 1997. I realized that the Pioneer bakery was accross the street when I noticed Pioneer delivery trucks going to and fro. I was surprised that the bakery that produced the bread I'd always eaten as a kid was so small and in such a nondescript building. A couple of the reviews here seem to suggest that there is/was a cafe attached. Does anyone have any info?

I have no idea how good this bakery was, found out about it on this site and went to check it out. The windows are boarded up now. Bummed because I know of no other bakery in Venice.

The greatest place for fresh bread, the bakery is right in back of the shop. You can stop here and get a couple of big crunchy loaves of french bread to use to make guy-sized submarine sandwiches for the next football game or poker night at your place if you want to do the little lady a favor!

PROS: FRESH hot bread and rolls
CONS: none...terrific!

The Pioneer Bakery has operated here on Rose Ave. a few blocks up from the beach, for as long as I can remember. Take a detour from the bike path and drop by the bakery's "secret" store where the smell of warm sourdough loaves is enough to make you swoon. We always bike home with a crispy, fragrant baguette lashed to the handlebars..well, most of a baguette anyway ;0)

PROS: Bread so fresh you often have to pick it up in double bags to avoid getting
CONS: none..what could be bad about hot sourdough bread right from the oven?

Generally speaking the bread at Pioneer Bakery is baked with some love, but the hot croissants are addicting!!! They normally have them at 11:30 a.m. at most mornings but you can also call them ahead of time to find out exactly when it's ready. When you buy the croissants always have them bag it in a paper bag instead of their usual plastic bag. Paper bag keeps the croissant fresh and crunchy!
