5 Stars: Great Place for Authentic Thai Food (by kingkong)

My family have been dinning at Marnee Thai restaurant for the last 15 years and never one time disappointed. Our last visit to the restaurant was last nite. We love the mango salad, corn cakes, spicy and sour PoTaek soup, Prawns with String Beans, and Pad Thai Silver Noodle. We would recomend anyone for any item on the menu you will never be disappointed.

5 Stars: Wonderful Thai Food (by Thai Food Lover)

My husband and I have been to Marnee Thai for over 20 years and always enjoy their authentic Thai food. We had to move out of the city due to my husband's work, but we always go back to eat and visit the staff there when we are in town. We love all their dishes especially the new dish called "Avocado Salad". For the new customers, I reccommend to order different dishes everytime you go back; don't be afraid to try new dishes because you will love them all like us.

5 Stars: Great food and Ambiance (by Meryl K.)

I love frequenting Marnee Thai, whether I call an order in to go or eat at the restaurant the food is always delicious and prepared quickly. The atmosphere of the restaurant, although very cramped, is pleasant and beautifully decorated.

4 Stars: Great Food (by Jacquelyn W.)

This place has great food. I usually order the chan pad poo but the pad thai and pad se oo are good too. Their angel wings are to die for! The place is small and they do usually get really busy, so i would suggest ordering out or not going at a prime time for dinner. They are a little pricey, but the food is definitely amazing

1 Stars: WORST RESTAURANT ALL TIME (by casanfranciscoliu)

I had a worst experience of all time in this restaurant. First of all, reservation does not work here. I made a reservation and I still had to wait in line for our table. Second, they just want to make money and rush you. We were asked to place the order while standing waiting for our table, and then they rushed the food to us and give us the check before we even finish our dinner. Bad services, they didn't give us water after we asked 3 times. WORST attitude, because their service was so bad, I decided that forget about the tip. They don't deserve it. The owner even came out of the door and asked for the tip. What the... I will be happy to give the tip if you perform good service. But, ask for tip outside the door.

The food is not as good. You can have better Thai food at Ploy II on Haight or Grand Pu-Bah on Division.

TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED. NEVER GO BACK.

4 Stars: Inexpensive, tasty Thai food! (by anniken9)

I went here just the other day, and just the place surprised me. I saw on the walls that it was chosen best thai food in SF by Citysearch. It wasn't a small, stinky, germy place. It was designed so that you felt like you were in a hut. The thai ice tea is very sweet. Pad thai is nice and refreshing, while at the same time is tasty. I think that the waitress was a little bit slow, but the food came in about 10 mins. It's inexpensive, and all comes together as a nice dinner and lunch place.

1 Stars: worst experience ever! (by eis55)

I went to the 9th ave branch.
After I went home, I found that I have been charged extra for the tip.
The waiter charged exactly 20% for tip although I gave 12%. The cashier changed the tip amount and charged more on my card.
What a bad experience!
I never had such an experience in any restaurant.
Tip is given for great service and 20% tip should be given on my will.
I will never go to this restaurant.

5 Stars: Fabulous blends of flavors with a warm and welcoming vibe (by laherbalist)

We happened upon this gem of a restaurant while visiting from LA for the weekend. Serendipity was at work steering us here! The proprietress, May, took us under her wing, recommending their most famous and popular dishes. The Larb salad with beef was light, but substantial, with incredible flavors on the beef and in the lime dressing. Another of May's recommendations was the noodle dish with soft shell crab - a melt-in-your mouth combination that all of us loved. Overall, we were totally impressed with the freshness of the food together with the brilliant use of spices and sauces. It was clear to us that the food is not only infused with love, but also with real culinary know-how. An added bonus was the great conversation we had with May, who advised us not only on food choices, but also on our future fortunes. A great evening overall!

4 Stars: Thai food here is one of the best! (by GoldenState03)

The food was good as always. The servers were busy as usual. There was a tall guy serving in particular and he gets the food to us with no problem. Mind you that the spaces between the tables are quite narrow and you can hurt yourself when you're not careful! =\ Other than that, the food was something! From what I've read here below, all I can say is I can respect everyone's opinion. Hey we can say all we want! It's a free country! Haha! Now I want some Marnee Thai again for sure! Bring on the Pad Tai! =)

5 Stars: Go for the food... Pick up the new book when you go home! (by cshiba)

I've eaten at many Thai restaurants around the Bay Area. By far the best one I've been to. I tend to be picky and usually only eat the same dish. Can't go wrong with about any dish and makes being "adventurous" a good thing! Went on a night that Chef Chei was at the original restaurant, selling his new book and signing them as well. He's a great guy to put the price at a low amount for a signed, first edition book ($35... try getting any of those Food Network chefs signed books for under $100) and even stayed at our table to discuss the receipes with us on a busy night. I'll keep going there, but now I can have any of these great dishes whenever I don't have the time to get out there...

5 Stars: Best Thai Food in SF (by bjrasta)

As soon as you arrive the staff greets with you a hello and quickly begins setting up your table even on their busiest nights I've only had to wait for a few minutes. The spicy angel wings are best in town, a little messy but totally worth it. Also, ask about the recommendations or favorite dishes that's how I discovered the green papaya salad and corn cakes. Both scrumptious and other favorites include the yellow curry followed by anything from the wok and topped off with Roti with coconut ice cream. It's all about sweet and spicy at this place and I was surprised at the good selection of wine they had to compliment the food. I've taken several friends and family members to this restaurant and they all walk away loving it and looking forward to their next visit.

5 Stars: Best Pad Thai and Angel Wings Ever (by lild14369)

Went to Marnee Thai due to Zagat reviews and friend's recommendations and it was the best. I recently traveled to Thailand and the pad thai's and angel wings there were not as tasteful as Marnee's. The owner might seem outspoken but once you get to know them, they greet you with a warm and loud greeting! The service is fast and the food is delicious. Been back to both locations ever since. So come with a big appetite for fast service and amazing food!!!!

5 Stars: Entered Pad Thai Competition in Thailand and WON! (by Mitbaaah)

Living in the bay area, I have eaten at many Thai restaurants. I can honestly say Marnee Thai has the best Thai food I have ever eaten. Both locations! On top of that, this place has won more awards worldwide than any Thai restaurant I know of, including an award specifically for Pad Thai, which was won in Thailand!!!!!!! Anytime I think about going out for Asian cuisine, my first thought is here. The only time I WONT eat here is when I've had it the night before! Two thumbs up!

2 Stars: The owner is seriously unprofessional & rude! (by jjg3er)

Food was definitely overrated! Service ok, but the owner? Oh boy, HORRIBLE! Rude, unprofessional, no customer service oriented, and simply just money hungry! The owner of Marnee Thai was rude to us as well. In our experience, we had a party of five(two who are elderly, one was handicapped) and she refused to seat us at a table set for six(not reserved at all) simply because we were just a party of five. Instead, she sits us in a table set for four. For the whole time we spent at the restaurant, the table of six remained empty! Just very unprofessional and outright rude. She was always yelling at servers, treating them with no respect -like slaves. I feel sorry for those who work there.

1 Stars: Rudest Restaurant Owner, food is not worth being treated like trash! (by jalin29)

I had a very similar experience to the person that wrote the 9/4 review. I used to love this restaurant, ate here for 3 yrs. There's no order, owner refused to have a sheet where people could sign in. She claimed she could remember the order that people came in. I waited for bout 45min, standing in the cramped doorway only to have her forget that I came in before this other group. In an accusing voice, she told me there was no way I came in before this group. Luckily, the group knew I was there first & told her that. FINALLY I was seated after much humiliation. We had a party of 4, me, my parents, &my grandma. At the time, only me & my mom were there so we sat down. My dad went to get my grandma in the car. The owner snapped @ me TWICE about where the rest of my party was. Told her they were on their way, just out front, my grandma is 85 and walks slow. Owner kept insisting that she would have to give my table away if my party did not show up right this min. My grandma gets inside bout 3mins later, she & my mom went to the restroom. The owner yells AGAIN bout where my party is. She is NOT a polite, well mannered person mind you, she is screaming across the restaurant with her overly loud voice. She was very condescending the entire time. I'm not sure if it is b/c I am young or if it has to do w/ race b/c she seemed jus fine w/ letting 1 group(Caucasian) keep their table even though 1/2 of their party (total of 10) didnt get there til 20min after they were seated. She didnt question them rudely every 5mins. or threaten them. We wanted to order 2 dishes and a large soup, we weren't very hungry. She comes over to take our order and WOULD NOT LEAVE til we ordered another dish. NEVER had I been forced to order more dishes than I wanted. Food itself is good, but not fantastic enough for me to deal w/rude service &an owner that acts like she is doing ME a big favor by allowing me to eat there. DON'T GO HERE unless u want to be treated like dirt!!!! Go to Chabaa=GREAT thai

5 Stars: A touch of Angel Wings (by tiank)

I've been living in San Francisco for 6 years and I daresay Marnee Thai is one the best Thai cuisine restaurant in the Bay Area. To start off, their Angel Wings are incredibly delicious that it made my cousins come all over from L.A just to get dibs on those wings. Also, the prawn silver noodle that they serve is fabulous. The noodle is so soft and smells so good. Another memorable dish is the dessert that they have, the Roti. It's so simple yet superb and you can add ice cream on top of it. The list can go on and on but I highly recommend anyone who is craving for a Thai food, pick this one out. The place can get crowded sometimes and you might have to wait due to the small size of the restaurant. But I still think it worths the taste. They got 2 locations now so you should not have much problem with getting a seat.

1 Stars: Worst service ever!!! (by roch_g)

You may have read my same review somewhere else, but it's only because I need to get the word out there that the service is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.

So I've been coming to this place for years but after last night I will never come here again. THE SERVICE WAS AWFUL. When my boyfriend and I walked in, there were 2 groups ahead of us. After they were seated, the owner lady said we were "going to be seated next". 45 minutes later we were still not seated. AND not only were not seated next, she sat 4 groups of larger parties who walked in AFTER us before us! And no they did not have reservations. I guess to them more people=more $ and all they care about is $. Loyalty and good service means nothing to them. I DO NOT RECOMMEND coming to this place. There are tons of of other Thai places in SF that have good food AND great service. They have officially lost my businesss.

5 Stars: If I had to choose just one Thai place for the rest of my life... (by ramondasilva)

This would be it. I have been going there for years, and recently took my parents who were in the country for a visit. The decoration is very interesting in the original location, like being in a big straw hut. The tables are a little close together, but it doesn't take away from the experience of dining there. The food was all perfectly seasoned, not too spicy, but just spicy enough for the sweet Thai tea to offer a wonderful contrast during the occasional sip. Marnee was on the dining room floor, sure that we ordered well and that when the food came that it was served properly. She stopped my mother just before she took a bite of her imperial roll to be sure she included a leaf, some sauce, and noodles in the bite. Maybe someone who is way too sensitive would have been put off, but really it was funny and added to the experience of eating there. Marnee just wants to be sure you get the absolute most from the experience of eating there. And for the price, which is very, very inexpensive, you get such a great meal. This is one of my favorite away (from downtown) spots to take people, and I will keep visiting until I leave the city, which I hope never happens.

4 Stars: Great Thai food! (by baychick)

Marnee Thai is delicious! I went for a Thursday night dinner and it was a wonderful experience. Although we didn't have a reservation, we were seated and served immediately. The menu has an extensive selection and there are also a variety of daily specials. We had the corn cakes appetizer, which was scrumptious - we couldn't get enough! We also had the chicken skewers with peanut sauce (good, standard), pumpkin curry (interesting and yummy), and a sweet-and-sour chicken dish with vegetables (tasty, but a little bit more on the Chinese food side). Everything was reasonably priced as well. I would definitely go back!

5 Stars: Best Thai Restaurant in Town (by deschchan)

Have to give Marnee Thai a full 10. I remember when I went there the first time, I felt very authentic from the decor and the food. The space is a bit crowded, but the food definitely makes up for it. I have known the couple who own the restaurant for many years. They are very nice people. All in all, all stars are aligned for the excellence of this restaurant.

5 Stars: The Best Thai "Angel Wings" your taste buds will ever experience!!! (by norcalchiro)

I've been dining here for many years now and May is the sweetest and most gracious hostess. If you don't know what your palate needs, she can help to educate your taste buds. I enjoy their "Angel wings" and the "Roti" (dessert) is to die for...

5 Stars: BEST Thai in San Francisco (by james_s)

Marnee is the BEST! I have had Thai food in countless restaurants, and I return to Marnee as often as I can. The menu and specials offer a wide range of choices from common dishes (e.g. Pad Thai) to unique treasures (e.g. Seabass in Spicy Red Sauce with Mixed Vegetables). Whatever the dish, the flavors are rich and wonderful. Vegetarian friends love it for its wide selection. Yes, the line can sometimes be long, but it's always worth the wait. And, if I don't want to wait, I'll call ahead and order take-out. If I had to list "favorite dishes," I would end up copying most of the menu. My one complaint -- I got full and couldn't eat any more. Guess I'll have to go back another time.

3 Stars: good authentic (by caucasoid)

I think Marnee Thai is one of the best authentic style thai I've ever had. It is not contemporary like thai house express in the TL, it's the basics that are done really well like the sattay chicken or the lemon grass soups. I think thai foodisn't worth it if it is mediocre, there's something about thai that always has to be exotic and special. That being said, Marnee Thai holds it's own. Everything is savory and unexpected.

The only problem is the boisterous, loud, rude owner that could potentially ruin your dining experience with her lousy manners, especially if you are already annoyed by the crowd. The trick is to do a little recon and see if she's there. Walk by casually and look in the window. the place is small enough that you can see if she's there or not. be careful though, because if she sees you peering in and then you walk away, she might come out and yell at you to come back. I'm serious. She has done this before which feels kind of awkward. If the coast is clear then go right in and have a fantastic meal. Otherwise just go have pho at Lois. But don't go to So cafe that place is no so great.

5 Stars: Marnee is SF's most authentic "Thai" dining experience (by sabaidii)

This restaurant deserves its consistantly high rating. If you are looking for a truly "authentic Thai" dining experience, read on... By authentic, I mean that both the food and the atmosphere are about as close as you will get to dining on Thonon Sukhumvit in Bangkok. This place gets crowded and noisy - and that's what we love about it. You might even get relocated mid-meal in order for the owner to accommodate a last-minute large party that needs your former table. Your menu choices will probably get "yelled back" to the kitchen as you are ordering. But whether you are a Thai food novice or veteran, give the owner a chance as she twists your arm to recommend items that are truly delicious. (A friend once said of Marnee, "It was the best food I never ordered!) Break out of the boring "Pad Thai" routine and give some other items a try - if you ask nicely, and for a couple bucks more - try the "Pak Gra Praow Gai - Kai Dao" (with a fried egg to break over your rice - a neat trick to temper the spices.) This all makes for a unique ambiance that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

If you are looking for a quiet, sublime experience, SF has no shortage of other Thai restaurants that can meet the bill - but get yourself over to Marnee for the real deal. Chok-dii !!!

3 Stars: Not great for a vegetarian (by anasthesia)

I am a vegetarian, and I was impressed by looking at some of the reviews. Moreover, reading the reviews,I felt that this restaurant had a vegetarian friendly atmosphere.
We gave a call and made reservations.
It looked pretty decent for a regular occasion dining. We were made to sit near the kitchen.
Drinks: We ordered baby coconut as one of our drink. It was served pretty well. And was very sweet and tasty.. (certainly recommended)
Soup: was just horrible (some veggie soup with coconut milk). It tasted almost rotten(hope I dont get a stomach upset tomorrow!!).
Appetizer: Samosa: Was average. Although, I liked corn cake.
Main Entree: was very well decorated with fancy raddish and leaves. But to our surprise, the noodles that we had ordered, had CHIcken(Inspite of us telling then explicitly that we wanted vegetarian food)!!!!
Moreover, the restaurant was smelling fish like.... (hmm :( .. so much for being veggie friendly! )

I would certainly not recommend this restaurant if you happen to be a vegetarian, and are not fond of eating when there is a fishy smelling atmosphere...

5 Stars: The only authentic Thai food I've had outside Thailand (by nnc71)

My wife and I went to Thailand over the summer and when we returned, we craved the food we experienced in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, the Thai restaurants here in S.F. were disappointing as we could not find the flavors we craved uless we searched out hard to find Thai ingrediants and cooked for ourselves. Recently however, we re-visited Marnee Thai and were pleased at how auththentic the food tasted. While in Chiang Mai, we took a Thai cooking class and learned the importance of fusing fresh ingediants. Most Thai food we've encountered outside Thailand seems to cut corners by using manufactured mixes or pastes. Thankfully Marnee Thai lives up to our expectations for exceptional Thai food. If we are unable to cook our own authentic Thai food, we will go down the street to our new favorite Thai restaurant.

5 Stars: Local Fave-- lucky to live nearby (by marcellediane)

I love marnee thai and have eaten at both locations many times and have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly, courteous, gives excellent service, and every dish i've tried has been so flavorful. The variety of the food and willingness to personalize upon request is excellent as well. But probably my favorite part is the family-owned and operated atmosphere. Marnee herself will often be serving your food and man, she knows her stuff. Her recommendations are always right on and the friendly service is just unmatched in my book. This is a favorite spot for me and my friends to eat in a large or small group, and always a fun experience. Mostly it's this personal touch, attentive service, and delicious food that makes Marnee Thai my favorite sunset restaurant. Oh, and take-out service is quick and tasty too.

1 Stars: Terrible Thai Food (by chronozeus)

I don't know what people are smoking giving this place such a high rating. I must've tried at least a dozen other Thai restaurants in the city and they were all much better than this place. I would say most Thai restaurants are similar and range from ok to little better than average, but this place just didn't do it for me. For starters the portions were so tiny it was ridiculous. The food were not very good and should not even be considered restaurant quality. I would most definitely not go a second time.

4 Stars: Good Food but Beware the Waitress! (by darrenjchris54)

Marnee has fantastic thai food but I was repulsed when a waitress there agressively tried to push me to order more plates than my family felt like eating. My wife and I have three small children and 4 dishes with rice are more than enough, but when we politely refused to order more dishes, the waitress mentioned an $8 minimum per person. She said she'd make an exception but then ignored us the rest of the night-- we wanted extras rice and water refills and had to be adopted by another waiter. She gave a great restaurant a bad taste, and although I reccomend Marnee Thai, beware of her!

5 Stars: Best Thai Food in Town! (by pointeshoes)

I had a good experience in this restaurant. One waitress, probably the same person some people mentioned in here, may be some pushy. But when I asked some questions about menu, she is the one who knows everything. Food was great. I think the price is average.
4 Stars: Excellent cuisine/resonable price (by anepales)

I wasn't expecting much when a friend of mine took me here. Frankly, it's pretty much a hole in the wall. That said, the owners and staff or Marnee have made the most of such a small space. I've eaten in far too many places with a great atmosphere and awful food. The so-so ambiance is a small price to pay, imo. While it is cramped, you hardly notice once you taste the cuisine. Add to that the fact that the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable and you have yourself a winner. As small as it is they've never hesitated to acommodate my large family gatherings who've had a hankering suddenly for Thai. My favorite Thai restaurant in San Francisco...easily.

5 Stars: Pumpkin curry?...Who knew? (by stephenheath)

Alright, listen!! If you are an epicurian or if you just want a good face reading...see May at Marnee Thai. No joke, this is the best Thai food I have ever had and that's a lot of Thai food. Not only were the samosas "damn good!" but the whole meal, including an out of this world pumpkin curry chicken, was SUPERIOR. Well, when you think it's over and you will die happy, don't be surprised if May reads your face on the way out. I heard her do it to another customer and secretly longed for it throughout the meal. She was dead on and she works the place like a maestro works a strings section! My partner John & I are from Philadelphia and the next time we are in San Francisco we will make a point to see May and feast at the fabulous and completely unassuming Marnee Thai.

My friends and I had lunch here this last weekend and they loved it! It has been five years since the first time I came to this place and I was so amazed to see that not much has change since then. Even when is packed on the weekends the food and the service are worth the wait for a table. The place still has that beautiful inviting and cozy look and the food was even more delicious than before.
5 Stars: best thai/ one of best meals i've ever had (by shralping)

OUTSTANDING dishes, every one of the 5 entrees (yellow curry w/chicken, bbq pork, prawns w/green beans, chicken w/spinach in peanut sauce, etc.), 3 apps(corn cakes, angel wings, garden rolls), and 2 desserts (I prefered the Roti w/coconut ice cream to the fried banana w/same)we shared at our table. Each dish was a very different flavorful treat, I just couldn't believe there were no duds. It seemed reasonably priced, too. It was quite crowded and we showed up w/o a reservation but we got lucky and were seated in 10-15 minutes. Fast, friendly, attentive staff. Quite helpful with recommendations to balance out our meal.

I have been eating at Marnee Thai for 6 years now. It is the best thai food in SF. Their Angel wings, tom yum soup and papaya salad are my favorites. Also, their Roti desert with ice cream is the BEST. You can't find it anywhere. Whenever Mae is in the restaurant, it feels like you're in mom's kitchen, as she makes you feel so welcome and always recommends the best dishes of the night.
5 Stars: Simply the best Thai Food I've ever had (by delairen)

This place is phenomenal. Everything I've had has been completely delish. If I'm not careful, I will stuff myself to groaning because there's so many yummy dishes I want to try.

I highly recommend the Lamb Curry and the Imperial Rolls. The Curry is wonderful, with just a little bit of kick (not enough for my spice-loving boyfriend, but just enough for me.) The Pad Thai was okay, although not my favorite dish there.

Value wise, it's exceptional. The prices are *very* reasonable, ranging around $10-14 an entree, although one Slightly annoying thing - rice isn't included in your entree order. So make a mental note to add a dollar to the entree price when ordering.

5 Stars: Best thai food in town (by husna)

My friends and I had a chance to visit Manee Thai on 9th avenue last week. Their waitress kindly seated us at the beautiful back room where will be opened only the place is filled. It was a busy night, so many people enjoyed their time along with wonderful meals. We tried angle wings and corn cakes as our appetizers. They made us stunned when they served them !! Good texture and the taste is definetly good. The entr'ees are wordless too describe; fortunately, we didn't miss the Mango sticky rice and Fried banana with ice-cream which they call FBI. I just wonder when will they have IRS. I will personally eat the whole plate of it : )

5 Stars: The best Thai food outside of Thailand, try #7 the spicy angel wings Yummy!! (by thyme)

I have been going to Marnee Thai since they opened 13 years ago. Everything on the menu is to die for. I am moving to Las Vegas and I alreadyam planning a trip back to SF to go to Marnee Thai to eat. My family and I usually order carry out because we order so much, one time our order was $289.00. We like to bring it home and eat it for dinner, then we will have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day. What can I say I LOVE Marnee Thai, and I love the people that work there. I am a regular and they know me by name, everyone there is so nice and how can you go wrong when the foog is so good!!!! I want to let every one know that they should eat here and they should tell their friends to eat there too. I wish I could have the #7 spicy angel wings every day. I could go on and on and tell you that this is the best food in the world, but you will have to try it for your-self and then you will see, no taste what I am talking about. My motto, got Thai, no got Marnee?

5 Stars: Wonderful food, colorful service! (by porterwill)

Great, inexpensive Thai food. Chef/owner has won many international prizes. Front of the house is driven by the Mrs./ owner...NOT named Marnee, but Mai. She's a vibrant personality, making suggestions, reading your vibe, and your face, and more. If you're looking for a low-key private dining experience, this is probably not it. Mai is part of the show, and that's what the crowds are looking for. Weekends are a bit crowded. They now have a second location on 9th ave, between Irving and Lincoln. Highly recommended. If you're a grouch, I recommend IHOP.If ya wanna have a good time and some good food, try Marni Thai!

5 Stars: Viva Marnee Thai! (by mg96)

I have been going to Marnee Thai for over 15 years now with my family. They are one of the oldest Thai restaurants in San Francisco and their longevity is a testament to the quality of their food and service. Weekends can be crowded but the hostess is always helpful and makes sure that everyone that's waiting is taken care of. The recent reviews about the owner's wife are surprising because everytime we've been there she's been courteous to us and has always received compliments from the customers about her friendly demeanor. It's interesting how many customers leave praising the restaurant but very few take the time to write reviews, however as soon as something goes wrong most are quick to judge from their first experience. If you're looking for delicious Thai food in the Bay Area that's not "fusion" or some sort of generic Asian food then you should definitely give Marnee Thai a try. You'll be impressed with their service and willingness to listen to their customers as well. An example is their new addition of brown rice to their menu, many of their customers were requesting it so they've started serving it now alongside with jasmine rice. Their weekly specials are to die for and the appetizers always leave you wanting more.

5 Stars: I love it when she yells!! (by kmtorres)

Each time I've been to Marnee the food has been delicious. We've received prompt service each time I've gone. Yes, it's crowded - so make a reservation. If you have food allergies - you probably shouldn't be eating out that much anyway. If you don't like volume & energy - don't go to Marnee!! This works out great because that means more seating for those of us who love it there! Soft shell crab with Mango salad and spicy wings, Yu-um!!!

5 Stars: Excellent food. Can't wait to go back (by landshark408)

Just tried Marnee Thai-Irving St. this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. All of the dishes we ordered were delicious (spicy angel wings, soft shell crab w/ mango salad, po tak, & F.B.I.). Im looking forward to going back and trying more of the great sounding dishes on the menu. The place was noisy and crowded just as people have said. To be expected so not an issue for me. The owner was running the show, giving recommendations and chatting it up with customers - she added some fun & energy to our experience. One of my new favorite restaurants.

5 Stars: Best Thai Food and Incredible Atmosphere! (by meekerjc)

I just moved to this neighborhood and all my friends said, you're so lucky that you'll be so close to Marnee Thai. . . I wondered hmm, better try it if they all rave so much. From my first step into this delightful restaurant I felt I had exited San Francisco and landed in a new country! The decor creates such a special atmosphere! I got there while it was full, but Mei, the hostess with the mostest, was quick with a cold beer and we got a table ten minutes later. Their menu has so many delicious dishes to offer that it becomes hard to choose! Oh well, I'll just have to go back again and again until I've had them all! I'll tell you my favorite then! Thank you Marnee Thai! You're my new favorite neighbor!

5 Stars: Great Place For Authentic Thai Food (by dailsy)

I have been coming to Marnee Thai restaurant for many years. I love all the dishes over there especially the tastety Spicy Angel Wings, Fresh Egg Rolls, Prawns Salad, Po Tak(seafood) Soup, Basa Fish with Garlic Sauce, Spicy Prawns and Calamari with Basil, Chan Pad Poo Noodle(with real crab meat) and Hor Mok (red snapper in curry mousse). I always save room for their specialty dessert which is Roti with Ice Cream. The atmosphere is very unique, the service is quick and friendly. try the 2nd branch on 9th Ave if you need the private room for special occasion.

They've got awesome appetizers that are all worth trying from their well-known Angel Wings to their new Soft Shell Crab over Mango Salad. If you're looking for a restaurant with plenty of great dishes to choose from, Marnee Thai is it. They also have delicious garlic prawns and basa fillet if you're craving fish. Another special worth trying on the weekends is the Hor Mok which you'll love if you're a fan of snapper. The ever-changing specials menu keeps diners on their feet and always gives them something to look forward to. Overall, regardless of what your preferences are, you'll definitely find something you'll enjoy at Marnee Thai.

The Pad Kee Mow with duck or tofu is delicious. The curry dishes are made to perfection. For an appetizer try the corn cakes, the Tod Mun or the egg rools, always a favorite.

I have been coming to Marnee Thai for the past 10 years. Their food is consistently wonderful and the service is very quick and friendly. I strongly recommend this place for Thai food lovers. Their food is to die for and very authentic. I am from Thailand so I know what the real Thai food is. Marnee Thai offer many ancient dishes that are hardly found at any Thai restaurant in town. I love the very unique atmosphere of the dining room, like being in the tropical hut in Thailand. I am not surprised that they won competitions both in Los Angeles and in Thailand and all the long list of awards that they have received. They also have a very good selection of vegetarian choices, very tasty and awesome. This is a must try restaurant!!!!!

5 Stars: A SF Dining Must! (by joannaahtim)

You can't go wrong with Marnee Thai and will probably end up returning again and again for its mouth-watering cuisine and fun, energetic atmosphere. I fell in love with owner/hostess May and her commanding yet warm demeanor. If you dine in for a birthday, she'll make sure you get some ice cream and will have the entire restaurant singing with the lights off and a gong gong-ing away! Eating at Marnee Thai is a dinner show in itself. Though a bit cramped for space on a busy weekend night, it's always fun and the food is always 100% satisfactory. My favorites include Spicy Angel Wings, Calamari Salad, Po Tak Soup, Green Curry, and Tofu Praram. Don't forget to have some hot tea with your meal...it's one of the most delicious around! After all that, I must say that Marnee Thai is hands down one of my top five favorite restaurants!

What made this visit even more special was that despite all the requests I made, the owner/hostess was still friendly and accomodating, and in the end surprised me with an accurate face reading/fortune telling. Her personality, the bamboo hut decor, and the food - I ordered my favorite chan pad poo (egg and crab noodles like pad thai but better), fried egg rolls, roast bbq pork (her healthier and better value recommendation to another bbq pork dish on the menu), and f.b.i.c. (fried banana and ice cream) - definitely make Marnee Thai one of my favorite restaurants in the city.

5 Stars: Authentic & well priced Thai food (by jaki88)

Awesome and authentic Thai food. I highly recommend the Basa fillet. I haven't tried all of their dishes yet but I'm getting there. Their food is also very well priced for what you get. If you are in the mood for real good Thai food go here. To avoid crowds go during the week or make reservations.

5 Stars: Best Thai Food in San Francisco (by sfnative22)

I've been coming to Marnee Thai for years and it never fails to give me the best Thai food. I recently moved out of the city, but make sure every trip here involves dinner at Marnee. I crave their Spicy Angel Chicken Wings, shrimp Pad Thai, pork with sting beans and green curry with eggplant. I've never had anything in my life as delicious as those angel wings! I tried for years to keep this place a secret, but now that they've expanded to the 9th avenue location, the secret is out.

Back in high-school Marnee Thai was my favorite date restaurant because it screams San Francisco, the food is delicious, and everyone is always kind. Hands down the best thai food in the city!
Don't fret if you have reservations, but still have to wait a few minutes, because the food is definitely worth it!

5 Stars: The best Thai Restaurant in San Francisco (by deglispiriti)

Here, you have everything: a charismatic, warm, wonderful owner, brilliant food, wonderful atmosphere, and great prices. I've been eating here for 7 years and will continue to be a loyal customer. Marnee even calls you "Darling."

5 Stars: Great food, Warm atmosphere (by altis03)

I have been going to Marnee Thai for a couple of years now and I have still not gone through the entire menu yet! There are so many dishes worth trying that you're bound to find something you like everytime you go. For those that have never gone to Marnee Thai before, I would suggest asking the server for recommendations to help you get a better idea of what the menu is like. The owner in particular is very helpful and always knows how to setup an accomodating menu for large parties. You can have your choice of atmospheres as well, the 2225 Irving Street location has more of a homely Thai hut feel to it with bamboo on the walls and plants hanging from the ceiling while the 9th Avenue location gives you a more sophisticated feel with vibrant colors and a private party room in the back.

5 Stars: Amazing Food, Exciting/Fun atmosphere (by danfree)

I have made Marnee Thai a regular haunt for years. The food is excellent. The dishes with tofu have amazing texture and flavor. The sauces are rich in flavor and quite varied.
My favorite dishes are the Bananna Blosom salad, Green Mango salad, Basa(fish) filet with Mushroom herb sauce and Pad Woosen Gai.
Enhancing the mix is the Owner/Hostess whose irrepressable energy, enthusiasm for her cuisine and helpfull recommendations create a memorable dining experience.

5 Stars: My Favorite Thai Restaurant!! (by nealo)

I grew-up in L.A. and Ive eaten at many of their 100s of Thai restaurants. I always thought L.A. had the best Thai Food Bar None, until I discovered Marne Thai. The food is great, the atmosphere is unique, and Marne is an entertaining hostess. There are a number of dishes unique to this restaurant that are wonderful, and the traditional items will not disappoint. Our staples are the Green Papaya Salad, Spicy Chicken, Pad Kee Mao, and Prig Khing J. If were in the mood for lots of garlic, Basa Filet with fresh garlic and pepper sauce is one of the best Thai Fish entrees Ive ever had. Whenever we feel like Thai food, we make it a point to get over to the Sunset District.

5 Stars: Best Thai Food in the Bay Area (by daicy66)

Almost 5 years ago I stumbled across Marnee Thai almost by mistake, how lucky was I!
I have tried over half the menu and can't seem to try the rest because I already have so many favorites, the corn cakes, spicy angel wings, basa with garlic and chili sauce, tofu and string beans to name but a few.
Saturday nights are usually pretty busy but Mai (the owner) moves the tables through quickly while making sure everyone gets what they need in a timely manner.
I highly recommend trying this restaurant and if you can't decide what you want, don't worry Mai is always ready to assist, in 5 years she has never steered me wrong.

1 Stars: Never go back there again! (by apple415)

I bad a worst dining experience in my life at Marnee Thai.
A waitress (owner's wife) pushed us to order some more food even though we told her we thought we had enough. There were too many tables and they were too close to each other. We could hear the conversation right next to us, so I bet they heard our conversation. I was very uncomfortable and could not enjoy food. By the way the food was okay, nothing special.

5 Stars: Best Thai Food in San Francisco (or anywhere!) (by CCSeefer)

My husband and I have been going to Marnee Thai regularly since 1990 and have enjoyed every meal we've had there. There is no better Thai food anywhere! The Spicy Angel Wings are amazing, and everything else we've tried has been fabulous. Some reviewers have complained about the size and "bumping elbows" with people at the next table. Well, that's just part of the charm. We've met many interesting people this way! Others have complained about May, the hostess/owner. May happens to be the heart and soul of Marnee Thai. We just love her, and her personality makes her unique and is what we love most about her. It's comforting to know that each time we go, May will be there to greet us with a hug. And she often sits down with us for a few minutes, just to chat and share her wisdom with us.

5 Stars: Highly Recommended! (by citybythebay)

I have been to this restaurant many times before and I can honestly say that it is the best value for your money. You are served some of the best Thai food San Francisco has to offer and you can also get dishes that many other Thai restaurants do not have. For example, the Angel Wing appetizers are amazing and the Basa Fillet with Garlic Sauce is a must for fish lovers. On the weekends it can get crowded so to avoid the rush try and go before 630 or make a reservation to ensure that you get the quickest seating possible. If you do not like to be cramped, try going to the new location on 9th Avenue between Lincoln and Irving because it is a little bit more relaxed and quiet there.

5 Stars: A great Thai restaurant (by sunsetscenary8)

I think Marnee Thai Restaurant is one of the few good places left in the Sunset that you can go to for Thai food. The atmosphere is friendly and the hostess (some people refer to her as May or Marnee) is extremely helpful. When you go in to eat, she will always recommend the best choices for you to choose from. There is also a new location that has opened up on 9th Avenue between Lincoln & Irving right by the entrance to the park. This location is bigger and has a banquet room in the back for private parties but is decorated more modern than the original Marnee Thai. For those that complain because they do not like the size of the restaurant, they should try out the new location. Either way, you get delicious Thai food in a welcoming atmosphere that you will not regret going to!

2 Stars: Good food, horrible service (by tc72)

This rating is in regards to a recent trip to the new restaurant on 9th and Lincoln. So far I've been twice, each time the food was very good, but the service was terrible. The restaurant has an estimated 30 tables and I think there were only two waitresses. The poor service became very evident when they showed up at our table with only one of the two entrees that we ordered, and told us that they had run out of the other. Not a good time to make this known. Another annoying thing is that they do not yet have their liquor license. This is not posted in the restaurant, you won't find out until you try to order a drink.

3 Stars: It was good years ago! (by bebebluebunny)

Marnee used to have excellent foods years ago but now the foods are just ok. The only reason I still go there once in a blue moon is for the Spicy Angel Wings and Roti with Ice Cream. Other than that the restaurant is way too small and too crowded.

You can't eat peacefuly there. They rush you to finish your foods as fast as you can so they can give the table to other people. For all I know, it is my money and I deserve to eat my foods at my own pace.

If you want to have dinner there I suggest you to make an advance reservation. If you don't, you need to be there no later than 6:30 PM or you will be waiting outside in the cold. It is also hard to find parking.

5 Stars: GREAT (by sfrestaurantenthusiast)

Marnee Thai has been a favorite of mine for many years. Since I moved into the Bay Area I have only heard good reviews of this restaurant. One of my co-workers recommended for me to go and ever since I have been making regular visits every week. The hostess is very nice, great with kids and is always helpful on recommending what to order especially for new customers. When the food comes out it is always hot and everything is fresh. One entree I highly recommend is the basa fillet in garlic sauce, you won't find it at many other restaurants and you wouldn't want to anyway because Marnee Thai has perfected this dish. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone who has not tried this restaurant before, you will not be disappointed. This place is always packed during weekend nights which proves that the customers can't be wrong!

This place has really gone down hill. My husband and I started going to Marnee a couple years ago and it has slowly declined to the point that we won't go back.

I think that Marnee Thai has had its day. Close to 10 years ago it was great, but it has been on a steady decliine for the past 4 or 5 years. Did success go to their heads so that a good thing got spoiled? Who knows? The bottom line is that it is a mere shadow of its former self and no longer worth going to.

However, I can understand the frustration that other commentors have mentioned with the woman owner.

I use to eat at this restaurant frequently because the food was so good that I was able to overlook the horrible service and that loud annoying owner. But when I ate there this past weekend, the recipies have noticeably changed and the food is no longer as tasty as before.
